[WARHOL] Aspen : the magazine in a box. Vol. 1, No. 3, 'The Pop Art Issue'

Cover title: Now Aspen in an all new fab issue. Vol. 1 no. 3. New York : Roaring Fork Press, December 1966. Cardboard box with colour graphic based on Fab laundry detergent, 310 x 230 x 20 mm (a couple of splits to corners)), containing a flip-book of Warhol's film Kiss and Jack Smith's film Buzzards Over Bagdad; a flexidisc (creased) of the John Cale composition Loop by the Velvet Underground and Peter Walker's The White Wind, in an illustrated portfolio with essays by Lou Reed, Robert Shelton and Bob Chamberlain; the newspaper The Plastic Exploding Inevitable, with articles on LSD and marijuana; the portfolio Pop art 12 paintings op art from the Powers' collection; the booklet Season's Greetings, an illustrated essay on the Colorado wilderness house of Chuck and Lydia Rand; a survey promoting the fashion boutique Paraphernalia, titled Are you confused enough for Paraphernalia?; an advertising pamphlet for Vanguard Records; a broadsheet mimicking the New York Times, advertising Aspen; an advertising broadsheet for Guild Musical Instruments, and a ten-trip "ticket book"; original subscription forms,a complete edition, all original, and all contents in good condition. Aspen, published in ten issues between 1965 and 1971, was edited by Phyllis Johnson and featured contributions from many renowned and influential artists. The Pop Art Issue was designed by Andy Warhol and David Dalton. The cover art is reminiscent of Warhol’s Brillo Box works, imitating a brand-name detergent box design on front and back covers. Inside the front cover is a table of contents and contributors and inside the back cover is an advertisement for Verve Records. The portfolio containing The Velvet Underground flexi-disc resembles a contemporary press kit for a rock and roll band. It is highly significant in that it is the first published recording of The Velvet Underground. The portfolio includes three essays claiming to be three independent views on rock and roll: The View from the Bandstand / Life Among the Poobahs by Lou Reed, The View from the Critic’s Desk / Orpheus plugs In by Robert Shelton, and From the Dance Floor / …it’s the only radio station that’s never off the air by Bob Chamnerlain. The twelve cards reproducing paintings in the collection of John G. Powers include commentaries by the artists and collector. The artists represented are James Rosenquist, Bridget Riley, Gerald Laing, Roy Lichtenstein, Kenneth Noland, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, Larry Poons, Jasper Johns, William de Kooning, Charles Hinman and Ernest Trova. A stapled booklet profiling an owner-built home outside Aspen belonging to the Rands features several black and white and colour photographic reproductions. The cover imitates a 1960s Christmas card with a black and white image of the snow-covered house with a red border and red printed Season’s Greetings in the lower left-hand corner. The newspaper Exploding Plastic Inevitable is the first and only edition, a tabloid style printed newspaper with illustrations, advertisements, cartoons and articles. Contributors include Ron Tavel, Gerard Malanga, John Wilcock, Jonas Mekas and Patricia Oberhaus. The Underground Movie Flip Book is a small two-way flip-book featuring stills from Andy Warhol’s 1963 experimental film Kiss and a preview of Jack Smith’s forthcoming Buzzards over Bagdad. The Berkeley Conference on LSD is a small pink card booklet (stapled) resembling a book of tickets, titled Ten Trip Ticket Book. Each page (ticket) contains excerpts from fourteen papers presented at the Berkeley Conference on LSD, held in 1966. Contributors include Richard Blum, William Frosch, Rolf von Eckartsberg, Frank Barron, Joseph D. Lohman, USCO, Michael Harner, Richard Alpert, Eric Kast, Abram Hoffer, Claudio Naranjo, Paul Lee, Houston Smith and Timothy Leary. Other ephemera in the box includes advertisements in the form of loose sheets: an Aspen Magazine subscription form; a quarter-fold brochure Folk Music on Vanguard (Vanguard Records); an A3 size poster (folded) promoting Paraphernalia, and a slightly larger than A4 size sheet advertising Guild Musical Instruments. Each issue of Aspen was published as a box containing ephemeral material, and was designed by various important experimental artists. The Warhol issue, with its vivid pop cover, is the most sought after, and is scarce complete. A single complete run of Aspen is recorded in Australian collections (National Gallery of Australia Research Library).

        Sweet life.

Amsterdam, De Bezige Bij, 1966. Square folio (29. 3 x 29.4 cm). Frontispiece, title page, [lvii] pp. [text], 179 pp. [photographic images], Publishers full, printed, cloth with title on the spine and author's autograph as vignette on the front board. Pictorial endpapers. In original pictorial dust jacket.= "Sweet Life" is the result of a 14 month-long world journey that the Dutch photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) made in 1960-1961, covering West Africa, the Malay Peninsula, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, the United States and Mexico. It is widely regarded as Van der Elsken's magnum opus. "At the suggestion of Dutch photographer Emmy Andriesse (1914-1953) [Van der Elsken] moved in 1950 to Paris. He was employed in the darkrooms of the Magnum photography agency, printing for Henri Cartier-Bresson (who was impressed with his street photography), Robert Capa and Ernst Haas. There he met (and in 1954 married) fellow photographer Ata Kandó (b. 1913 Budapest, Hungary), twelve years his senior, living with her three children among the 'ruffians' and bohemians of Paris from 1950 to 1954" (Wikipedia). Provenance: gift from Van der Elsken to his wife, the photographer Gerda van der Veen (1934-2006) (inscribed on the endpapers). Two small tears in the margins of the dust jacket, otherwise a very good, unique copy.

        Wide Sargasso Sea.

London: Andre Deutsch, 1966. First edition this "tour de force" (New York Times Book Review). Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Jean Rhys. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. Introduction by Francis Wyndham. Jacket design by Eric Thomas. Rare and desirable signed. Wide Sargasso Sea, a masterpiece of modern fiction, was Jean Rhys's return to the literary center stage. She had a startling early career and was known for her extraordinary prose and haunting women characters. With Wide Sargasso Sea, her last and best-selling novel, she ingeniously brings into light one of fiction's most fascinating characters: the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. This mesmerizing work introduces us to Antoinette Cosway, a sensual and protected young woman who is sold into marriage to the prideful Mr. Rochester. Rhys portrays Cosway amidst a society so driven by hatred, so skewed in its sexual relations, that it can literally drive a woman out of her mind.

        I postdiluviani

Milano: Edizioni d'Ars, , 1966. Fogli sciolti in cartelletta (loose as issued in original portfolio). Molto Buono (Very Good). Poesie di Lamberto Pignotti. Contrappunto ornamentale di Luciano Lattanzi. Ogni tavola è numerata e firmata a matita dai due Autori. 4to (cm 32x23). pp. 4 + 12. Molto Buono (Very Good).

Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgang, 1691. 2 volumes bound as 1. 12mo. With the same woodcut printer's device on both title-pages, 2 folding engraved maps, 17 double-page engraved plates with printed music, Siamese alphabets, inhabitants etc., 21 full-page engraved plates, engraved headpiece and several woodcut illustrations in text. Contemporary vellum.

STCN (6 copies); Walravens 92; cf. Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 1194-1196; Wyatt, "Introduction" in: A new historical relation of the Kingdom of Siam (1966). Second edition, published in the same years as the first, of a comprehensive work on the history of the kingdom of Siam, "Universally regarded as the finest work on seventeenth-century Thailand" (Wyatt). The French diplomat Simon de La Loubère (1642-1729) was appointed as Louis XIV's envoy extraordinary to the court of Siam, and while he stayed in Siam for only three months he diligently and systemically asked questions, "probably stimulated by the Jesuit scientists who accompanied the mission to take more than a passing interest in Siamese cosmology, astronomy, and mathematics" (Lach & Van Kley). Loubère compensated his short stay with a thorough study of earlier writers, referring to twenty-three European authors from Pinto to Gervaise in the first volume and collecting French translations of native works in the second. Besides presenting information on Siam itself, Loubère also incorporates information on India and China and their influence on Siam's past. With the armorial bookplate of Anton Ernst Burckhard van Birckenstein (active 1686-1744) on paste-down. Very good copy.

The Big Knockover Selected Stories and Short Novels Edited and with an Introduction by Lillian Hellman

New York: Random House, 1966. First Edition. Inscribed by Lillian Hellman to Norman Mailer, ?For Norman, With love, Lillian.? Just very good in dust jacket; in a custom cloth clamshell box. Of course, it would be better to have it inscribed by Hammett, but he had already been dead for five years, so set that wish aside. Given Mailer?s own weak attempt at hardboiled fiction (Tough Guys Don?t Dance, 1984), this is an especially good association. Despite his well-earned reputation as a writer, that book demonstrated that it is no easy task, even for someone as talented and skilled as Mailer, to write in the genre.

Magick Lantern Cycle (Original film program for the Spring Equinox 1966 screening, signed by Kenneth Anger)

New York: Film-makers' Cinematheque, 1966. Original film program for the 1966 screening of six Kenneth Anger films, being shown on the Spring Equinox (March 21, 1966). SIGNED by Anger on the verso of the front wrapper. Screened at Jonas Mekas's Film-maker's Cinematheque coopperative theater, then located at 125 West 41st Street in New York. Films at the screening included "Kustom Kar Kommandos," "Fireworks," "Scorpio Rising," "Eaux d'artifice," and a prelude entitled "Anger Aquarian Arcanum." Also included was the premiere screening of the "Sacred Mushroom Edition" of his film "Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome," which condensed an earlier three-screen edition of the film into a single, superimposed image. In hip late-1960s fashion, the program includes specific instructions for "psychedelic researchers" who wished to view the film as it was fully intended: "in that Holy Trance called High." Anger, one of the most significant filmmakers to come out of the American avant-garde in the mid-1960s, was born in Southern California and began making films when he was only ten years old. His work often prominently featured homosexual themes, and his career-long fascination with the mystical and magical is prominently on display in the "Magick Lantern Cycle" as well. The Film-maker's Cinemantheque, co-founded by Jonas Mekas in 1962, would offer a home, albeit with an oft-shifting location, to avant-garde New York filmmakers, and would later grow to become the Anthology Film Archives, one of the world's largest and most important repositories of avant-garde film. 8.5 x 11 inches (22 x 28 cm), nine pages, saddle-stitched with plastic spine protector as issued. Vintage bookstore label to the front wrapper. Black, white, and day-glo orange card wrappers, printed in black and white on purple, blue, red, and white stock throughout. About Near Fine, with some light soil and toning to the wrapper edges.

        BLACK MONEY

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1966. First edition. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket, touch of shelf wear to corners and spine ends. (13441). Octavo, cloth backed boards. A Lew Archer novel. Signed presentation copy to noted Canadian author and educator Marshall McCluhan and his wife Corinne. "Santa Barbara/ Xmas 1965/ For Marshall and Corinne/ with love and admiration/ Ken." Marshall McLuhan spent time guest teaching in Santa Barbara where he and Millar met and became lifelong friends. "This is a powerful novel, set against the backdrop of a millionaires' playground in southern California and peopled with unforgettable characters. While Archer's clients in this and other books are rich and powerful, Macdonald's characterization is perhaps at its most masterful when dealing with the little people, life's victims whose pathetic dreams are the fuel for tragedy." - Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, The Aficionado's Guide to Mystery and Detective Fiction, pp. 522-23.         Sweet life.

      - Amsterdam, De Bezige Bij, 1966. Square folio (29. 3 x 29.4 cm). Frontispiece, title page, [lvii] pp. [text], 179 pp [photographic images], Publishers full, printed, cloth with title on the spine and author's autograph as vignette on the front board. Pictorial endpapers. In original pictorial dust jacket.l "Sweet Life" is the result of a 14 month-long world journey that the Dutch photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) made in 1960-1961, covering West Africa, the Malay Peninsula, The Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, the United States and Mexico. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
