Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 3, The Coming of War 1936 - 1939

The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, initiated by Randolph Churchill but completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life, comprising eight mammoth main text volumes and - so far - sixteen accompanying document or "Companion" volumes. The eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. Publication of the Companion volumes continues today. This is the rarest, most keenly sought, and most prohibitive to acquire of the Official Biography Companion volumes.  There was just a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without.  The third is the rarest of the three Volume V Companions. Here is the British first edition, only printing, an excellent, near-fine plus example in a near-fine plus dust jacket.  The red cloth binding is square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and bright gilt.  Flaws are trivial - a bit of wrinkling at the spine ends and a hint of scuffing to the fore edge of the front cover.  The contents are immaculately bright and clean.  No spotting.  No previous ownership names or bookplates.  No soiling.  The red-stained top edge retains perfect, deep, uniform and entirely unfaded color.  The dust jacket is bright, clean, and unclipped, still bearing the original front flap price.  We note no tears or losses.  The only trivial flaw detected is a hint of wrinkling, primarily at the extreme spine ends, which virtually disappears beneath the removable, archival quality clear dust jacket protector.  Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage.  Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e3

        The Dream

The Dream is Churchill's revealing essay about an imaginary reunion with his father, Lord Randolph Churchill, in which Winston recounts the great world events that have happened since his father's death - without revealing his own role in them. First printed in The Daily Telegraph in 1966, The Dream was not published in individual book form until 1987. The International Churchill Society produced this leatherbound limited edition of 500 individually numbered copies. This was an elaborate production, printed on acid-free archival paper and bound in padded red leather with gilt decoration and the Churchill arms blind stamped on the front cover. All edges are gilt and there are head and footbands, as well as a satin page marker and silk endpapers. This is copy 196 of 500, a near-fine+ copy for collectors. The binding is clean and square, with only an insignificant hint of wear at the spine ends and two light, tiny marks on the covers. The contents are pristine with no markings. Accompanying the book is a letter to the original ower from The International Churchill Society providing background and details about the limited edition. The third is the rarest of the three Volume V Companions. Here is the British first edition, only printing, a superlative, truly fine example in a fine dust jacket that appears unread. This is as good as they come. The red cloth binding is immaculate - clean and tight retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and virtually no wear. The contents are pristine. There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume. No spotting. No previous ownership marks. The red topstain retains deep, entirely unfaded color. The fore and bottom edges are as clean and bright as the contents. The dust jacket is crisp, bright, and complete. The front flap price remains intact. We note absolutely no losses or tears. We detect no sunning whatsoever to the spine lettering. Searching for flaws, we note only a trivial hint of wrinkling to a tiny portion of the top edge of the rear face. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302e3.

Winston S. Churchill: The Official Biography, full set of 8 volumes in uniform, solid color dust jackets

The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, begun by Randolph Churchill and completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. All eight main text volumes are now out of print, having been published between 1966 and 1988. Offered here is a premium, collector-grade set of all eight volumes. All eight volumes are first editions in fine condition in near-fine+ or better solid color dust jackets. The red cloth bindings of all eight volumes are excellent, with bright gilt and virtually no wear. All volumes have square corners except for one small bump to the upper front corner of volume VII. The contents of all eight volumes are clean and tight. The only trivial hint of spotting we find in the set is confined to the text block fore edge of Volume I. The sole previous ownership mark is a decorative bookplate on the Volume I ffep. The red topstain retains strong color with only light signs of sunning on seven of the volumes; appreciable sunning to the topstain occurs only on Volume V. The dust jackets are all crisp, clean, and bright. All eight dust jackets are unclipped, still retaining original prices on the front flaps. None of the jackets are faded. Even the notoriously-fade-prone III, IV, V, and VII dust jacket spines retain bright, original color. Moreover, the dust jackets show no losses or tears. Trivial hints of wear are confined to the extreme spine ends of Volume I-III. All dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this is a large and heavy set that will likely require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301a-h.

Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume V, Part 1, The Exchequer Years 1922 - 1929

The Companion volumes for Volume V of the Official Biography are the most keenly sought and most prohibitive to acquire of all Official Biography volumes. There was only a single printing in England and the Volume V Companions were published in smaller quantities than other Companion volumes - meaning that many Official Biography sets will forever do without.  Here is a truly fine copy of the first of the three Volume V Companions, the British first edition, only printing.  The white dust jacket is immaculate with absolutely no flaws to report - crisp, bright, clean, and complete with no discernible wear.  There were two prices on the dust jacket flap - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after 1 February 1981. Both prices are intact on this unclipped dust jacket.  The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.  The book beneath is likewise truly fine and appears unread.  The red cloth binding is clean, tight, and square, showing virtually no wear and retaining a nicely rounded spine, sharp corners, and bright spine gilt.  The contents are pristine.  There is no sign of the looseness or gutter breaks that so often occur with this massive volume.  There is no spotting and no previous ownership marks.  The fore and bottom edges are as clean and bright as the contents.  The sole trivial flaw noted is that the first half inch of topstain immediately adjacent to the spine is very slightly sunned.  The balance of the red topstain retains deep unfaded color.  Please note that this large, heavy book may require additional postage.

Together they claim 19 inches of shelf space, weigh more than 28 pounds, and fill nearly 8,700 pages.  Offered here is a complete, jacketed set of all eight volumes. All eight volumes are British first editions in their original, uniform, solid color dust jackets.  All eight volumes are in near-fine plus or better condition, appearing unread.  All eight bindings are tight, clean, and square with virtually no wear.  The contents of all eight volumes are clean and bright.  We find no spotting or previous ownership marks of any kind in the set.  The unstained fore and bottom edges are likewise clean and bright.  The red-stained top edges all retain strong color, with only very slight sunning to a few.  The uniform, solid color dust jackets are all unclipped, varying from very good plus to fine condition.  Shelf presentation is quite good.  All eight dust jackets are complete with only slight wear at the head of the Volume II jacket spine and some abrasion along the lower Volume VII rear hinge.  Many of these solid color dust jackets proved highly susceptible to sunning of the spines.  Here minor sunning affects the jacket spines of only Volumes II & IV.  All eight dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this is a large and heavy set that will likely require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301a-h.

        Death of a Naturalist

Oxford University Press NY: Oxford University Press, 1966. Octavo. First American edition. One of 1,000 copies comprised of sheets from the first edition with a new title page. This is Heaney's first commercially produced verse collection, preceded by Eleven Poems, a pamphlet published by Queen's University in Belfast. The future Nobel Laureate's richly cadenced lyricism is firmly established in this auspicious debut, from the famous opening lines of "Digging" onward. This is a fine copy in green gilt-stamped cloth, in a dust wrapper that shows very little of the customary fading to the photo-sensitive colors on the spine and just a couple of tiny nicks to extremities.

Autograph Letter Signed to Richard Elman

December 16 [1966]. Six pages of text, handwritten on both sides of three pages, a tirade against Random House/Pantheon's "rotten & inexcusable" failure to promote Elman's book (The Poorhouse State) blended with parallel fears over Random House's coming launch of his own book (Hell's Angels). Thompson covers four possible fronts (Aspen, Denver, San Francisco, L.A.) where he might be able to get press for Elman, pausing occasionally to take swipes at Random House, to note that he himself hasn't yet read Elman's book ("maybe it's rotten & inexcusable too - eh?"), and to suggest that he and Elman team up and join the Oklahoma City Police Department. He promises to make efforts on Elman's behalf but warns that all he can do is mail the books off and "hope for the best. I can't be too hard-nosed with them because I don't want to be black-listed before they have a go at mine" (Hell's Angels, which was officially published the following month). He concludes by asking Elman to do what he can to get Hell's Angels reviewed: "My entire financial future hangs in the balance." Signed, "HST." A noteworthy letter for a number of reasons, but most importantly because Elman was the person who was most directly responsible for getting Hell's Angels published. In his memoir, Namedropping, Elman writes about meeting Thompson, who had called him on the basis of their having a mutual friend. After taking Elman on a scary motorcycle ride around Central Park and New York City, Thompson showed him the manuscript of Hell's Angels, told him their mutual friend had said that he, Elman, had connections in publishing and asked if he could find someone who would be interested in publishing this. Elman had written for The Nation so he showed the piece to Carey McWilliams, the editor of the magazine, and McWilliams printed an excerpt from it in The Nation soon after, the first publication of any portion of the book. Then Elman took the manuscript to his own editor at Pantheon, Sara Blackburn, who loved the book and decided to offer Thompson a contract. At the sales meeting to discuss it, however, Jason Epstein, the editor at Random House, got so excited by the project that he took it from Blackburn and Pantheon and made it a Random House book, offering Thompson a larger contract than Pantheon had (Pantheon was at the time part of the Random House group of publishers, which also included Alfred A. Knopf). A historic letter, at a critical point in Thompson's career, which sheds light on Thompson's and Elman's earlier relationship, when Elman helped Thompson get his work noticed: here the tables are turned, and Elman is seeking Thompson's help, although Thompson, who still has not yet had a book published, can do little to reciprocate. 500 words; writ large in red pen, on gray paper, folded in thirds for mailing, with a crimped, short tear at the middle of the right margin; near fine. .

        [Playscript]: The Birthday Party

New York: Haila Stoddard [and] Mark Wright [circa 1966]. Playscript for the American Broadway production. 139 photo-mechanically duplicated leaves, printed rectos only, bradbound into black, die-cut Russell Reproduction Studio wrappers. A faint tidemark at the bottom of the first few leaves and a stain (and paper remnants) on the rear wrap, else very good or better. Hand-numbered "#57" on the title page. After bombing in London in 1958 and almost derailing Pinter's career as a playwright, the American version, produced by Stoddard, Wright, and Leonard S. Field, debuted nearly a decade later to critical acclaim. It ran for 126 performances in 1967-68 and won a Tony Award for Best Actor for James Patterson.

Fluxclinic Record of Features and Feats

NY: Fluxus, 1966. Very good. Single sheet printed on one side with accompanying folder [offset lithograph on white card stock, folded once, printed on both sides] both in fine condition. Playing doctor is a favorite children’s game. It permits the exploration of each other’s body, and acts as a kind of surrogate catharsis against real doctors who hurt. In performance, Fluxus frequently took simple everyday activities , especially children’s games, and manipulated them as metaphors for larger social and political views. The folder for Fluxclinic Record of Features and Feats was produced by Fluxus for use in Fluxclinic events starting in 1966. Fluxus Codex Page 268.

        THE WINTER BEACH. Signed

New York: William Morrow & Company Inc., 1966 Ogburn, Charlton Jr. THE WINTER BEACH. Signed. New York: William Morrow & Company, Inc., 1966. 8vo., 321pp with index. Publisher's 1/4 white-lettered brown cloth over baby blue paper covered boards. A near fine or better example illustrated with maps & over forty superb line drawings by Marcia & Edward Norman, in a near fine price intact pictorial dustwrapper. Neatly signed in full in black ink on the title page. A very handsome book production, winner of the 1967 prize for natural history writing: The John Burroughs Medal.. "In late October, 1964, in a small bus equpped for camping [Ogburn] set out alone for upper Maine. From Mount Desert Island, he traveled southward with the season, pausing for intensive explorations of Cape Cod and Nantucket, of the Long Island beaches, and of Chincoteague and Assateague Islands off the Virginia shore, until he reached the outer banks of North Carolina. The result is a book of eloquence and vitality, of depth and beauty, and one to which the reader will return again and again." [from the jacket]. This is Ogburn's Classic & an important book in the Natural History genre. Here, he explores and ruminates upon the various Atlantic seacoasts always noting the austere beauty of the sea in winter. An extraordinary vibrant & well informed work, a mixture of scientific fact & sweeping epiphany. Not as well known as Henry Beton's 1928 clasic, The Outermost House but certainly on a par. Very uncommon signed. Custom embossed dark blue cloth slipcase in very fine condition.. Signed by Author. First Edition.
