Bath - Cedric Chivers Ltd, 1966. Bath - Cedric Chivers Ltd, 1966 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Avery smartset of Camilla by English author Fanny Burney. A facsimile re-print of the original 1796 edition. Complete in five volumes. Frances Burney (13 June 1752 6 January 1840), also known as Fanny Burney was an English novelist, diarist and playwright. She wrote in total four novels, eight plays, one biography and twenty volumes of journals and letters. She gains critical respect in her own right, but also foreshadows such novelists of manners with a satirical bent as Jane Austen and Thackeray. She published her first novel, Evelina, anonymously in 1778. When the book's authorship was revealed, it brought her almost immediate fame due to its unique narrative and comic strengths. She followed with Cecilia in 1782, Camilla in 1796 and The Wanderer in 1814. All of Burneys novels explore the lives of English aristocrats, and satirise their social pretensions and personal foibles, with an eye to larger questions such as the politics of female identity. Throughout her career as a writer, her wit and talent for satirical caricatures were widely acknowledged: literary figures such as Dr Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke, Hester Thrale and David Garrick were among her admirers. Her early novels were read and enjoyed by Jane Austen, whose own title Pride and Prejudice derives from the final pages of Cecilia. William Makepeace Thackeray is reported to have drawn on the first-person account of the Battle of Waterloo, recorded in her diaries, while writing Vanity Fair. Camilla, or a Picture of Youth, is a story of frustrated love and impoverishment. The first edition sold out;Burney made 1000 on the novel and sold the copyright for another 1000. Condition: In red cloth bindings with contrasting label to the spines, in unclipped dustwrappers. Externally, very smart, with just some minor shelfwear only. Dustwrappers are smart with just some minor edgewear and handling marks. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Overall: NEAR FINE inNEAR FINEdustwrappers..

Big As Life (signed 1st printing)

Simon & Schuster, New York 1966 - Simon & Schuster, 1966. New York. 218 pages. Stated First Printing. SIGNED by EL Doctorow directly to the title page. No inscription, signature only. Signed in person. Original 1st issue DJ with $4.95 price intact on the DJ flap. Red colored cloth and red topstain. By far Doctorow's most rare book. Doctorow fell out of favor with this book and has never allowed it to be published again. If you go to EL Doctorow's website, he does not even list this as one of the books he has written. Additionally, upon presenting this for signing, Mr. Doctorow commented on how this is his rarest book and overall quite rare. He noted that he would never grant rights to republish it. As for this copy, the book is nearly fine as it is tight, bright and unread. The only flaws holding this book back from grading fine is light wrinkling to the cloth on the upper front panel and a slightly discolored patch of cloth on upper front right. The DJ is in lesser condition despite maintaining the original bright hues. $4.95 price is intact on the DJ flap. This DJ has a 1 inch open chip to upper right front as seen in the photo. There are a couple of scuffs and rubbing along the edges. DJ verso shows some tape reinforcements. As a result, dropping DJ condition to Good Plus. A most rare book, even more rare Signed. Plenty of upside for the holder of a beautiful DJ to upgrade this already attractive SIGNED copy. Nearly N. Fine in a Good plus DJ. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Typed Letter Signed

Two pages; dated July 24, 1966 on his Remsenburg letterhead. To ?Gene,? with much friendly chat, ?I shall be eighty-five (of all absurd ages) in October, and I don?t feel a bit like it...I...feel fine. Still, there?s no getting away from it, eighty-five is the figure...Ethel and I live very quietly and peacefully here with our two dogs and cats...Rather funny, Guy Bolton lives down here and about eighteen years ago we were spending the week end with him, and Ethel went for a stroll before lunch and came back and told us she had a bought a house!...I am about two-thirds of the way through a new novel, which seems to be coming out all right. I have also done a lot of short stories for Playboy, so I suppose I rank as sort of a male Bunny.? Signed ?Plum? and with a three line holograph postscript.

        Death of a Naturalist

London: Faber and Faber, 1966. London: Faber and Faber, 1966 First edition. Publisher's green cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original dust jacket. A fine copy, with light wear to the extremities, bright and fresh interior; price-clipped dust jacket, with some light wear to the spine ends, toning to the lower half of the spine, partially affecting the front panel, a few hints of light soiling to the rear panel, otherwise clean. Overall, a bright and attractive copy of the author's first work published in book form. Brandes & Durkan A2a. Death of a Naturalist is a collection of thirty-four poems, including "Digging," "Death of a Naturalist," "Blackberry-Picking," and "Mid-Term Break," among others. Preceded only by the privately printed pamphlet Eleven Poems in 1965, Death of Naturalist, the author's first commercially published work, was received with critical acclaim. Hailed as the greatest Irish poet since Yeats, Heaney's poetry evokes imagery of the Irish countryside, where the poet grew up. The dust jacket affirms, "It is in particular the acute observation of the countryside and its people that gives his poetry its distinctive strength." Death of a Naturalist is concerned with the author's memories from his childhood, ranging from experiences with nature to the death of his four-year-old brother. Although Heaney would not win the Nobel Prize in Literature until 1995, Death of a Naturalist won the young poet notable awards, including the Somerset Maugham Award, the Cholmondeley Award, the Eric Gregory Award, and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        The Magus

London: Jonathan Cape, 1966.. London: Jonathan Cape, 1966. First edition of the author's most well-known work. Octavo. Signed by the author on the title page. Light rubbing, fine in a near fine dust jacket with only the lightest of rubbing. A very sharp copy. The Magus was published by in the United Kingdom in 1966 and in the United States by Little, Brown and Company the same year. An instant success, the Sunday Telegraph called it a major work of mounting tensions in which the human mind is the guinea-pig... Mr Fowles has taken a big swing at a difficult subject and his hits...are on the bull's eye'." The Magus was quickly adapted into film starring Michael Cain, a "…deliciously toothsome celebration of wanton story-telling... Before one quite realises what is happenings, one finds oneself no less avid for meanings and no less starving amid a plethora of clues than is Nicholas himself" (Sunday Times). The Magus was awarded inclusion in the Modern Library 100 Best Novels in 1999, and in 2003, the novel was listed at number 67 on the BBC's survey The Big Read.
