In the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit Timothy F. Leary Appellant, United States Appelle Brief for the Appellant

Joel Jay Finer - 1966, 1st printing. (Wrappers) Very good. 129pp. Original printed blue grey wrappers. Somewhat browned on the edges. Spine faded to tan. Minor pen corrections throughout the text. A very presentable copy of a very scarce item especially so signed. No 23570. This is a printed version of the appeal Leary's council made for his famous conviction on March 11, 1966 for transporting and illegally importing marihuana. The famous case known as Leary vs. United States was eventually overturned on the grounds that the Marihuana Tax Act was declared unconstitutional. His conviction was thus quashed. This wonderful document detailing the whole grounds for appeal has been signed by Leary on the front wrapper when he was making a public reading in Toronto in 1992. The prospectus for the Multimedia convention is also loosely laid in. A wonderful rare Leary item. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Wrong Venus (First Edition, inscribed to John D. MacDonald)

New American Library (NAL), New York 1966 - First Edition. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper to fellow mystery writer John D. MacDonald: "To John D. / With admiration / Charlie." A brief but eloquent inscription, linking two of the best hard-boiled mystery writers of a generation. Williams also wrote the screenplay for the 1968 film adaptation, "Don't Just Stand There!" starring Robert Wagner and Mary Tyler Moore. Williams is best known for his books "Dead Calm," "Aground," and "The Sailcloth Shroud." Like other hard-boiled authors, much of his output came in the form of paperback originals, and his books are seldom found inscribed, this being only the second such copy we have seen. On top of that, a stellar association. Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. A lovely copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Boyhood Photos of J.H. Lartigue -- The Family Album of a Gilded Age

Ami Guichard, Lausanne, Switzerland 1966 - First edition, first printing. From the library of, and inscribed with the name of Joyce Neimanas. Hardcover. Burgundy laminated cloth-covered boards with tipped-in sepia plate, gilded title and foliate design on cover and spine; no dust jacket as issued. Photographs and text by Jacques-Henri Lartigue. Essay and captions by Jean Fondin from interviews with Lartigue. 128 pp., with 62 tipped-in black and white and sepia-toned reproductions on lightweight matt gray cover stock paper, printed in Switzerland by Imprimerie Centrale Lausanne. 9-1/4 x 12 inches. CONDITION: Near Fine (a few stray marks on the cover (visible only in raking light), very minor shelf wear and a 1/4-inch closed tear at the heel of the spine, faint stain on upper text block, else a near mint copy). Designed to mimic Lartigue's own photo scrapbook, this book contains snapshot-sized reproductions of Lartigue's most beloved photographs, and many lesser-known gems. From the introduction: "Lartigue's pictures, along with his accompanying comments and recollections, represent a kind of family album which summons up not merely the fanciful life of the lavish and successful Lartigue family, but in some sense, the childhood of a century as well. He chronicles how he and his brother and cousins amused themselves on vacations at their country estate, in Paris, among the fashionable ladies and fantastic new devices (horseless carriages, flying machines) of the 1900s. Gradually, through his photographs and memories, a sense of the age begins to take shape, in all its unabashed frivolity, its excitement, its blessed feeling that peace is the natural condition of man and that prosperity (for those who have it, at least) must be enjoyed to the full."         Typed letter signed to Renee Longy Miquelle. The Joy of Music [and] The Infinite Variety of Music.

New York, [Simon & Schuster,] 1945 [1959, 1966] - Single leaf folded for mailing with the envelope. Octavos. Original cloth, with the dust jackets. Housed in a dark blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Letter very lightly marked, books very good in torn and creased dust jackets. First editions, first printings. Each book bearing the composer's signed presentation inscription, "To Renee who taught me much about the Joy of teaching Love Lenny", "For Renee with love & every good warm wish for '67 - Lenny B". The recipient was Bernstein's former teacher at the Curtis Institute where Longy taught ear training. Bernstein studied score reading under her tutelage. The letter was written just 5 days after the opening of his first Broadway musical, On The Town. "Well the show has opened and is a phenomenal hit, in spite of it all. The reviews are fantastic raves, especially the Times and PM, and the Hollywood Reporter which called it the greatest musical ever produced! It's thrilling, and I would be a rich man, except that whatever money I get goes back to Uncle Samovitch for taxes." He concludes that he is "struggling to get back into my beard (long-hair) and study Brahms First for Pittsburgh next week" signing off with "Love and thanks again Lenny Spookietchka". A touching and resonant group and a key association in Bernstein's musical life. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
