        BLACK MONEY

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1966 - Octavo, cloth backed boards. A Lew Archer novel. Signed presentation copy to noted Canadian author and educator Marshall McCluhan and his wife Corinne. "Santa Barbara/ Xmas 1965/ For Marshall and Corinne/ with love and admiration/ Ken." Marshall McLuhan spent time guest teaching in Santa Barbara where he and Millar met and became lifelong friends. "This is a powerful novel, set against the backdrop of a millionaires' playground in southern California and peopled with unforgettable characters. While Archer's clients in this and other books are rich and powerful, Macdonald's characterization is perhaps at its most masterful when dealing with the little people, life's victims whose pathetic dreams are the fuel for tragedy." - Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, The Aficionado's Guide to Mystery and Detective Fiction, pp. 522-23. Pederson (ed.), St. James Guide to Crime and Mystery Writers, (4th ed.), pp. 676-678. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket, touch of shelf wear to corners and spine ends.       Simon & Schuster 1966 - Poor DJ. Signed by the Author's wife. Discussed in biography (in Frederick John Kiesler (American architect)) .More sculpture than architecture, the house consisted of a group of joined, rounded, shell structures on piers that could be used as continuous space or as separately defined, closed-off rooms. Inside the Endless House (1966), written as a journal, is basically an account of Kiesler's artistic life. His last important work was the Shrine of the Book (1959-65), which houses the.For detailed description and photos of this book, please contact us.

30 x 24 127 pages 2,300 kg [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The two writers Andrew Wyeth enjoys the most are Robert Louis Stevenson, whose books his father illustrated, and Henry D. Thoreau, whose hundredth birthday was the day Wyeth was born

Rare Autograph Letter Signed ?Andrew Wyeth,? 2 pages, 7.25? x 10.5?, separate sheets. The Mill ?Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, February 9, 1966. To Miss Evelyn B. Byrne, New York. Fine condition. In full, ?Dear Miss Byrnes: Many thanks for your nice letter. Please tell your students that the two writers I enjoy most and still do are Robert L. Stevenson and Henry D. Thoreau ?" Mr Stevenson wrote about drama and Nature with great poems ?" and Mr. Thoreau wrote deep personal accounts of his looking in Nature.? It is interesting to note that in 1911, Wyeth?s father, N.C. Wyeth, painted a series of illustrations for an edition of ?Treasure Island? by Robert Louis Stevenson. The proceeds from this great success paid for his house and studio. He also illustrated editions of Stevenson?s ?Kidnapped? in 1913. Andrew Wyeth was born on July 12, 1917, the 100th birthday of Henry D. Thoreau, whose writings his father admired. It is not surprising that Andrew Wyeth enjoyed the works of Stevenson and Thoreau the most. From 1966 to 1970, Evelyn Byrne ran a program at New York City's Elizabeth Barrett Browning Junior High School where she asked major literary and artistic figures of the time to write back with their recollections of what books inspired them while they were teenagers. An assortment of their responses were published in the book Attacks of Taste, printed in 1971 by Gotham Book Mart.

Vanier (1888-1967) was a Canadian soldier and diplomat who served as Governor General of Canada in September 15, 1959 - March 5, 1967, and the 19th since Canadian Confederation. His time in the Office of the Governor General saw the creation of a number of awards that reflected the Major-General's interests. He was an avid fan of sport and, though his favourite was hockey and specifically the Montreal Canadiens, Vanier instigated in 1965 the Governor General's Fencing Award and the Vanier Cup for the university football championship in the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union. To recognise excellence in more bureaucratic endeavours, Vanier initiated in 1962 the Vanier Medal of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada and, in 1967, the Vanier Awards for Outstanding Young Canadians, awarded to deserving individuals in the Canadian Junior Chamber of Commerce. Vanier and his wife, Pauline were both nominated to be beatified in the Catholic Church because of their piety and love for humanity.Julia Verlyn "Judy" Lamarsh (1924-1980) was a Canadian politician, lawyer, author and broadcaster. As Secretary of State, she was in charge of Canada's Centennial celebrations in 1967. After leaving politics in 1968, she wrote three books, and had her own radio show on CBC Radio. She was stricken with pancreatic cancer in 1979 and was given the Order of Canada at her hospital bed. She died a few days short of the 20th anniversary of her first political election victory, in 1980.Hon. Louis Joseph Lucien Cardin (1919-1988) was a Canadian lawyer, judge, and politician. He was the Minister of Justice and Attoney General of Canada from July 1965 to 3 April 1967 succeeded by Pierre Trudeau.         Robert Bresson (Softcover, inscribed by Bresson and Esteve)

Paris: Cinema d'Aujourd'hui no. 8 / Editions Seghers, 1966. Later printing, trade softcover. INSCRIBED by director Robert Bresson on the half title page: "Pour Pierre Goulliard / amicalement / Robert Bresson." Additionally INSCRIBED on the half title by the author: "Pour Pierre Goulliard / le toute [unknown] / Michael Esteve [underlined.]" An early critical look at the renowned auteur, who, despite his relatively brief filmography placed seven films in the recent 2012 "Sight and Sound" poll of the 250 best films of all time, more than any other director. Bresson was a notorious recluse during his lifetime, and autograph material of any kind is rare, this being only the third piece we have encountered or offered for sale. From the collection of noted cinephile and collector Pierre Goulliard, who spent decades in the latter half of the twentieth century obtaining inscriptions from the giants of European cinema. Very Good plus in wrappers. Lightly soiled, with light rubbing to the edges, but square and tight overall. Text in French, illustrated with numerous photos throughout.         11:02 Nagasaki

Tokyo: Shashindojin-sha, 1966. Spine toned, else near fine in photo-illustrated boards and original cardboard slipcase, toned at the edges and extremities. (Lacking the original acetate overlay.). First Edition. Small quarto. SIGNED by Tomatsu. One of the cornerstone books of postwar Japanese photography. In this brilliantly edited volume, Tomatsu moves away from a purely representational depiction of the horrors of Japan's defining moment, focusing equally on the abstract tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki rather than just human deformity. In many ways, the cover image of a watch stopped cold at 11:02 is more chilling than the profile of a scarred bride on her wedding day. (Parr / Badger, v1, 276-277; Open Book 226-227; Auer 454).

Winston S Churchill, The Official Biography, full set of 8 main text volumes

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1966. First edition. Hardcover. Near fine/Very good plus. Here is a full set of 8 U.S. editions of the main text volumes of Winston Churchill's Official Biography. The Official Biography of Winston Churchill, begun by Randolph Churchill and completed by Martin Gilbert, is an epic piece of scholarship about a singularly epic life. The eight, massive main text volumes were originally published between 1966 and 1988. The British and U.S. first editions of the eight main text volumes were published between 1966 and 1988. The British first editions were bound in solid red cloth. These U.S. editions were more elaborately bound, with tan linen spines over blue buckram boards with blue spine title blocks printed in red and gilt. The bindings also feature head and foot bands and red ruled transitions at the border between the tan linen and blue buckram. The final three volumes were issued in illustrated dust jackets, while the dust jackets of the first five volumes were issued in un-illustrated solid colors, similar to their British first edition counterparts. Here is a full set of U.S. first editions in dust jackets. This set claims nearly 18 inches of shelf space, weighs more than 26 pounds, and fills nearly 8,700 pages. Volumes III-VII are first edition, first printing, while Volume I is a first edition, third printing and Volume II is a first edition, second printing. All eight volumes are in near fine or better condition in dust jackets ranging from very good plus to fine. All eight bindings are square, clean, and tight. We note only a few small corner bumps. All contents are bright and clean with no spotting and no previous ownership marks. All dust jackets are unclipped, retaining original front flap prices and showing no losses. We note light wear to extremities on a few dust jackets and some sunning of the Volume IV jacket spine. The balance of the jacket spines - including the particularly fade-prone Volume V jacket - remain unfaded. All eight dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Please note that this is a large and heavy set that will likely require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A301a-h.

        THE LAST GENTLEMAN

New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, [ca. 1966].. Narrow quarto. Plastic comb bound printed wrappers, with authorship ascription on upper wrapper in ink. Some occasional creasing and nicks at corners, but a very good copy. Uncorrected proofs of the first edition of the author's second book. An excellent association copy of this uncommon proof, with Paul Horgan's bookplate, as well as his scattered annotations in the text and occasional marginal commentary. Given that Percy and Horgan were the most widely read American Catholic novelists of their generation, this is an important association copy.

Archive of posters and ephemera documenting the gay and lesbian-themed films of Rainer Maria Fassbinder

Various cities: Various Publishers. A collection of 26 posters and other ephemera documenting four key gay and lesbian-themed films by director Rainer Maria Fassbinder. During Fassbinder's short but extremely prolific career, he took on an extraordinary variety of subjects, with post-War West Germany as his principal palette. He was a rebel whose life and art was marked by gross contradictions: though openly homosexual, he married twice; one of his wives acted in his films and the other served as his editor. Accused variously by detractors of being anti-communist, a male chauvinist, anti-Semitic, and even anti-gay, he completed 44 projects between 1966 and 1982, the majority of which can be characterized as highly intelligent social melodramas. Fassbinder's prodigious output was matched by a wild, self-destructive libertinage that earned him a reputation as the enfant terrible of the New German Cinema (as well as its central figure.) Known for his trademark leather jacket and grungy appearance, Fassbinder cruised the bar scene by night, looking for sex and drugs, yet maintained a flawless work ethic by day. Actors and actresses recount disturbing stories of his brutality toward them, yet his pictures demonstrate his deep sensitivity to social misfits and his hatred of institutionalized violence. Some find Fassbinder's cinema needlessly controversial and avant-garde, while others accuse him of surrendering to the Hollywood ethos. Mainly it is clear that he drew forth strong emotional reactions from all he encountered, both in his personal and professional lives, and left behind a provocative and lasting artistic legacy. Success was not immediate for Fassbinder. His first feature length film, a gangster movie called "Love is Colder Than Death" (1969) was greeted by catcalls at the Berlin Film Festival. His next piece, "Katzelmacher" (1969), was a minor critical success, garnering five prizes after its debut at Mannheim. It featured Jorgos, an emigrant from Greece, who encounters violent xenophobic slackers in moving into an all-German neighborhood. This kind of social criticism, featuring alienated characters unable to escape the forces of oppression, is a constant throughout Fassbinder's diverse oeuvre. In subsequent years, he made controversial films about human savagery such as the television film "Pioneers in Ingolstadt "(1971) and "Whity" (1971) before scoring his first domestic commercial success with "The Merchant of Four Seasons" (1971). This moving portrait of a street vendor crushed by betrayal and his own futility is considered a masterpiece, as is his first international success, "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul" (1974). With a wider audience for his efforts, however, some critics contend that Fassbinder began to sell out with big budget projects such as "Despair "(1978), "Lili Marleen" (1981) and "Lola" (1981). In retrospect, however, it seems that the added fame simply enabled Fassbinder to explore more diverse kinds of filmmaking, including such "private" works as "In a Year with 13 Moons "(1978) and "The Third Generation" (1979), two films about individual experience and feelings. The director's greatest success came with "The Marriage of Maria Braun" (1979), chronicling the rise and fall of a German woman in the wake of World War II. Other notable movies include "The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant" (1972), "Fox and His Friends" (1975), "Satan's Brew" (1976) and "Querelle" (1982), all focused on gay and lesbian themes and frequently with a strongly pornographic edge. The following films by and about Fassbinder are specifically of LGBT interest: DIE BITTEREN TRANEN DER PETRA VON KANT [THE BITTER TEARS OF PETRA VON KANT] (1972) "Petra von Kant is a successful fashion designer -- arrogant, caustic, and self-satisfied. She mistreats Marlene (her secretary, maid and co-designer). Enter Karin, a 23-year-old beauty who wants to be a model. Petra falls in love with Karin and invites her to move in. The rest of the film deals with the emotions of this affair and its aftermath. Fassbinder tells his story in a series of 5 or 6 long scenes with extended uses of a single camera shot and deep focus." (imdb.com) German poster, 34 x 23" inches. Fine. FAUSTRECHT DER FREIHEIT [FOX AND HIS FRIENDS] (1975) "Franz 'Fox' Biberkopf is a working-class guy, at loose ends when his lover is arrested and the police shutter their carnival booth. In need of cash for his weekly lottery purchase, Fox lets himself be picked up by an elegant older man named Max. At Max's, he meets two younger gay men who have expensive tastes and images to uphold. The next day, Fox wins 500,000 marks in the lottery, and Max's friends suddenly become Fox's friends, especially Eugen, the heir to a bookbinding firm that's short of cash. Eugen's polish beguiles Fox, and the fleecing begins." (imdb.com) Two German posters, one in color with an image of three cast members, including Fassbinder. One in black-and-white with a portrait of Fassbinder in a black leather jacket. Both 33 x 24 inches. Fine. Eight German lobby cards. 9 x 12 inches. German program, Film Neuer-Kurier #144, Vienna, 1975. Pictorial wrappers, 8 pp., fine. IN EINEM JAHR MIT 13 MONDEN [IN A YEAR WITH 13 MOONS] (1978). A drama that follows the last few days in the life of Elvira (formerly Erwin) Weisshaupt. Years before, Erwin told a co-worker, Anton, that he loved him, and Anton replied, "Too bad, you aren't a woman." Trying to salvage something from the wreckage love has made of his life, he now hopes that Anton will not reject him again. German poster, 33 x 24 inches, folded as issued. Fine. French poster, 63 x 47 inches, folded as issued. About Fine. Eight German lobby cards. 9 x 12 inches. Fine. Two German promotional photos with text on the verso. 5 x 7 inches (13 x 18 cm). Near Fine. German program, Film Neues-Programm #7366. 4 pages. Fine. EIN MANN WIE EVA [A MAN LIKE EVA] (1984) A film basically about Fassbinder, made shortly after his death. "A bearded director named EVA, a fictive Rainer Werner Fassbinder, lives in a large house with his cast and crew as he films Dumas' Lady of the Camellias. His accountant informs him he has many unpaid bills and little cash on hand. EVA throws a fit and fires him. He then proceeds to play one person off against another, dismiss with cruelty his recent lover Ali, sleep openly with his leading lady Gudrun, and make a direct and public play for his leading man, Walter. He's mercurial, dictatorial, and manic. Will he finish the film, having drawn great performances from his actors through his manipulations, or will his antics set events in motion that spin out of his control?" German poster. 33 x 24 inches. Fine.
