A Photographic Record of the Mount Shisha Pangma Scientific Expedition.

Peking. Science Press.1966. 29 x 23,5 cm. (42) Bl. Original Cloth with gilt back and gilt title. Blotchy. Foreword: China is a land with numerous lofty mountains and highlands. The Tibetan Plateau, reputed as \" the roof of the world \", is particularly known for its vast sierras - chains of mountains striving for mastery and splendour at dazzling altitudes. To reach these heights, to conquer the beetling peaks hitherto destitute of human traces and to carry out extensice scientific investigations of the climatic conditions and natural resources in these regions in the interest of our socialist construction, are arduous but glorious tasks to be accomplished by Chinese scientist. Mount Shisha Pangma, standing in Nyenyam County, Tibetan Autonomous Region, China, was the last of the world`s fourteen lofty peaks over 8,000 m in heigt that had remained unconquered until 1964. The Chinese mountaineering expedition, in an ambitious undertaking to conquer nature and after undergoing all hardships and surmounting difficulty after diffuculty, finally reached the 8,012 m main peak of Mt. Shisha Pangma triumphantly at 10:20 a. m. Peking standard time on May 2, 1964 and placed our fivestarred national flag and a bust of Chairman Mao on the summit. This is another glorious feat the Chines mountaineers have accomplished for our people and motherland.......The photograpic pictures carefully selected and reproduced in this collection are the true records of the Shisha Pangma Scientific Expedition. They are intended to summarize the scientific findings of the glaciological, geological, geomorphological and biological investigations in the Shisha Pangma region and to reflect the Tibetan landscapes and the wonders of nature in their luxuriant beauty. These are the \" summits commanding amazingly beautiful views \". But there are in China many more such lofty mountains and precarious peaks to be conquered and still numberless heights of scientific achievement to be reached by our scientist.         Death of a Naturalist.

Oxford University Press, New York 1966 - First American edition of the Nobel Prize-winning poet's first major collection. Octavo, original green cloth. Inscribed by the author on the title page, "For Steve with gratitude-"to set the darkness echoing"19th March 1970 Seamus Heaney." Fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows some fading to the pink portion of the spine panel. Nobel Prize-winning Seamus Heaney writes about his native Ireland in this collection of poems. "[Heaney's] awareness of a wider social world . . . reaches its culmination in North (1975), a deservedly famous volume that [Helen] Vendler regards as 'one of the crucial poetic interventions of the 20th century,' ranking with Eliot's Prufrock, Wallace Stevens' Harmonium, and Frost's North of Boston in 'its key role in the history of modern poetry" (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times).         William Hartnell Signed Photograph and Letter Framed Doctor Who Autograph

UK 1966 - William Hartnell Signed Photograph and Letter Framed Doctor Who Autograph. Mounted and framed signed letter and photograph of William Hartnell, the original Doctor Who. The letter is a written reply to a fan who requested an autograph. It is especially rare as there are very few recorded instances of Hartnell referring to or discussing his time playing Doctor Who. Dated May 23rd 1966, it was written towards the end of his run playing the Doctor but before he knew that he was leaving the series. Interestingly, some of the comments made in the letter could be interpreted as dissatisfaction with the direction of the show at the time. The photograph features Hartnell in character as the Doctor and is signed 'William Hartnell Dr Who'. A unique part of television history. The frame is 43cm x 35cm. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        SOME/THING 3 (VOL.2, NO.1 - WINTER, 1966)

New York: David Antin & Jerome Rothenberg, 1966. First Edition. Octavo; illustrated wrappers; [80]pp; illus. Tiny stain to crown, faint foxing to lower edge of textblock, with a faint smudge and 1cm separation to lower perforation on front wrapper; tight, Very Good+ or better. The issue featured contributions by Antin, Carol Berge, Charles Bukowski, Robert Duncan, Allen Ginsberg, Anselm Hollo, Denise Levertov, Jackson Mac Low, Gerard Malanga, and others. The cover for this issue was designed by Andy Warhol, printed on sheets of real glue-backed stamps, perforated and made for tearing and pasting. Though initially Warhol wanted to design the cover using a Vietcong flag, Antin encouraged him to appropriate the pro-war slogan "BOMB HANOI!" and put it on the cover as a button. An attractive copy of a fragile publication. Clay & Phillips p.118-119; Dorbin C343.

5 Typed Letters Signed ("Bill Saroyan" and "Bill") to his agent H.N. Swanson ("Swanie")

Fresno, Califronia, 1966. 5 pp in all, typed rectos only. 4to (11 x 8-1/2 inches); two sheets cropped. Faint creases; secretarial marks in red ink. Corrections, cancellations, and annotations in Saroyan's hand. 5 pp in all, typed rectos only. 4to (11 x 8-1/2 inches); two sheets cropped. Saroyan, still bitter about the treatment he received from M.G.M. during the production of his screenplay THE HUMAN COMEDY, warily discusses the possibility working in Hollywood again on new works POINTY SHOES and MAMA GIRL, I LOVE YOU: "Now, Metro phoned me and wanted to make a deal but I drove them off, because Mayer cheated me on The Human Comedy, and because the new mob there refused to release TV rights in the book to me, and so on and so forth. Drove them off by saying I wanted a percentage and a quarter of a million dollars. O.K., the hell with it: now, though, may just be the time to make a deal on this novel." Unfortunately, the project stalls. From a later letter, included here: " ... I am presuming POINTY SHOES is dead, and good enough." In other letters, Saroyan investigates the logistics of making a film documenting his native town: "I have got to make me a little 5-hour movie about Fresno before the best part of it is torn down and forgotten, and that's happening right now." He discusses current and upcoming projects, mulls over various film and TV possibilities, but is still rankled by his old troubles with M.G.M.-" ... that stupid M.G.M. somehow legally got its sticky fingers on The Human Comedy TV rights, too, and has prevented me from making all kind of excellent deals on the property." Written in an easy, chatty style, these letters reveal a writer frustrated by past injustice but nevertheless determined to maintain his prodigious output while pushing for a new break.

        Crying of Lot 49

1966. PYNCHON, Thomas. The Crying of Lot 49.Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, (1966).First edition of Pynchon?'s second novel, his ?"haunting… tryst with America?" (New York Times), an especially fine copy in scarce original dust jacket."The wealth of invention is overwhelming… Pynchon's trick of sitting the action on the edge of absurdity without letting it fall off is carefully performed" (Parker, 20th Century Novel, 428). Crying of Lot 49 achieves "a haunting sequence of imagined human situations, typical and pathetic ones, fused with the particularized power that shows Pynchon's own obsession with the encoded messages of the American landscape. What is also noticeable… is that the major character is really Pynchon himself, Pynchon's voice with its capacity to move from the elegy to the epic catalogue… But then, how else should one imagine a tryst with America? And that is what this novel is" (New York Times).Mead A2.A fine copy.
