De la misere en milieu etudiant: consideree sous ses aspects economique, politique, psychologique, sexuel et notamment intellectuel et de quelques moyens pour y remedier.

Strasbourg, 1966.. 8°. 28 pages sous couvertures bleues. Broche (Softcover). Reliure originale. Tres bon etat. / Fine Condition. First Edition.

Tokyo: Shashindojin-sha, 1966. Fine in photo-illustrated boards and original cardboard slipcase, lightly toned at the edges and extremities. (Lacking the original acetate overlay.) Housed in a custom clamshell slipcase.. First Edition. Small quarto. Insert laid in. One of the cornerstone books of postwar Japanese photography. In this brilliantly edited volume, Tomatsu moves away from a purely representational depiction of the horrors of Japan's defining moment, focusing equally on the abstract tragedies of Hiroshima and Nagasaki rather than just human deformity. In many ways, the cover image of a watch stopped cold at 11:02 is more chilling than the profile of a scarred bride on her wedding day. (Parr / Badger, v1, 276-277; Open Book 226-227; Auer 454).

Byrne, a teacher at Elizabeth Browning Junior High School in the Bronx recommending his favorite books and authors. Expected mailing folds, else very fine condition. Rickenbacker writes, in most part: ""...Of course it must be remembered that due to the early death of my father, I was forced to leave school at the seventh grade to go to work to help support a family of seven, so I had little time for reading. However, my favorite authors were Mark Twain, Horatio Alger and Tom Swift. In addition I was always interested in anything pertaining to American history and the biographical works of great leaders, all of which was a great inspiration and portrayed what are [sic, our] forefathers had gone through to leave us the heritage of freedom and prosperity that we enjoyed at the time. It is possible that your students would be interested in having a copy of my two books - 'Fighting the Flying Circus' covering the activities of the 94th Aero Squadron during World War I, and 'Seven Came Through' giving the details of our sojourn on the broad Pacific during World War II, so I am sending these autographed to you under separate cover. I have always maintained that regardless of your age one can always learn by reading and keeping abreast of the times. In closing, may I wish for all your boys and girls every success, but may they always remember that hey must learn to have faith in the power above. If they do this they will need have no fear of the future."""

[The Master and Margarita, in] Moskva

Moscow:, 1966-67. 2 parts (1966, pt. II; 1967, pt. I) in original printed wrappers. Housed in a pale tan cloth with titles blocked to spine and front in blue. Tape staining to backstrip of the first number, some general creasing to wrappers, both issues a little cocked. Very good. The first appearance in print in any format of The Master and Margarita, serialized in two issues of the journal Moskva in November 1966 and January 1967. Although the novel had been completed in 1938, in common with most of Bulgakov's prose it was not published until long after his death from an inherited kidney disorder in 1940. During his life, Bulgakov was best known for the plays he contributed to Konstantin Stanislavsky's and Nemirovich-Danchenko's Moscow Art Theatre. He published a number of novels and stories through the early and mid 1920s, but by 1927 his career began to suffer from criticism that he was too anti-Soviet. By 1929 his career was ruined: government censorship prevented publication of any of his work and staging of any of his plays, and Stalin personally forbade him to emigrate. This first printing of his best known work is a censored version of the text, eliminating much of the anti-Soviet satire, yet it still caused an immediate sensation on publication. The first edition in book form was published by the YMCA Press in Paris in 1967, also with the censored version of the Russian text. The full text was first published in English later in 1967 (there are two different English translations, one of the censored text and one of the full text). The first appearance of the full text in Russian was published in Frankfurt in 1969.

Illustrated with 8 colour plates and many line drawings by Lucy Kemp-Welch. London: J.M. Dent & Sons Ltd., [1966]. Later edition. Octavo (8 1/16 x 5 1/4 inches; 204 x 134 mm.). xii, 226 pp. Eight full-page color plates and numerous black and white line drawings throughout the text.Bound ca. 1966 by [Bayntun Riviére] for Brentano's in full blue polished calf, covers with double gilt borders, spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled in compartments, two red morocco gilt lettering labels, gilt board edges, gilt-turn-ins, all edges gilt, marbled end-papers. Small neat book-plate on front paste-down. A fine copy.A superlative copy of the classic - and quite novel - story of a horse, told in his own words, wherein he recounts his life as a well bred steed from early childhood in a pleasant meadow, through numerous owners - some kind and some cruel - until fate returns him to the meadow in which he was born. Though animal autobiographies had been published before for children, Black Beauty stands apart from those in that it offered social criticism of his various owners. Because of that, the book was read, appreciated and loved by adults as well as juveniles. It has never been out of print since its original publication, has been adapted to the screen on fourteen different occasions, and has forever fostered and cemented the special bond between young girls and horses. Ultimately, Black Beauty's continual and lasting value is as one of the first - and certainly most influential - arguments for the humane treatment of animals."Beauty's color is no accident (Sewell's book is clearly modeled on Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin, 1852), and the most poignant moments in the narrative occur when Beauty, while recognizing the inevitability of servitude, nevertheless longs wistfully for freedom" (Robert Dingley, in Nineteenth-Century British Women Writers, p. 354)."Anna Sewell (1820?-1878), author, was born on 30 March 1820... her ?'life of constant frustration?' (Mrs Bayly, 71) began when, aged about fourteen, she slipped and fell... injuring both her ankles [that led to] a lameness which, although varying in its severity, was permanent and meant that at times she could not walk outside or stand for very long. She also suffered from a debilitating invalidism which varied in its intensity but remained with her for life characterized at times by pains in her chest, loss of strength in her back, and a ?'weakness?' in her head leading to periods of ?'enforced idleness?' (Mrs Bayly, 245)...

354)."Anna Sewell (1820–1878), author, was born on 30 March 1820. her ‘life of constant frustration’ (Mrs Bayly, 71) began when, aged about fourteen, she slipped and fell. injuring both her ankles [that led to] a lameness which, although varying in its severity, was permanent and meant that at times she could not walk outside or stand for very long. She also suffered from a debilitating invalidism which varied in its intensity but remained with her for life characterized at times by pains in her chest, loss of strength in her back, and a ‘weakness’ in her head leading to periods of ‘enforced idleness’ (Mrs Bayly, 245).

        GRIST 7

Lawrence, KS: Abington Book Shop, 1966. First Edition. Quarto; white illustrated wraps printed in black and purple, stapled; 39pp; illus. Hint of toning along spine fold, else Fine. Issue 7 of John Fowler's literary magazine, notable for featuring the first commercially published pieces of S. Clay Wilson's artwork. Wilson, along with Robert Crumb and Manuel "Spain" Rodriguez, was an influential pioneer in the underground comix movement beginning in the 1960's. Three pieces of artwork appear in this issue, and while they don't depict the full-throttle violence and ugly sex which usually permeates his work, the beginnings are there. The first piece is a full-page pen drawing titled 'Captain Marble and his pirate crew dine after a hard day of pillage, rape, murder, and looting. And plunder and evil.' The second piece is an untitled centerfold depicting a variety of bikers and miscreants at a burger joint. Wilson has also illustrated the rear cover of the magazine. While other artists from that era have moderated their extreme style of artwork in order to assimilate into the mainstream, even into his 70's, Wilson seems resolutely defiant. An important and extremely uncommon debut, predating any work he did for Zap! Comix by a considerable margin of time.

CARTAS DE PIEL Xilografias de Sally Weintraub

Buenos Aires, Argentina: Francisco A. Colombo. 1966. 1st printing. Folio, The text is in English and Spanish. The English translation of the poem is by Celia Pschero. . Weintraub was born in 1931 in La Pampa, Argentina, but now lives and works in Spain. She had a major showing of her work at The Agora Gallery in November, 2014, in New York City. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. A list of her exhibitions and collections, from 1955 to 1966, is reproduced in this portfolio. Further information about the artist may be found at her website: sallyweintraub(dot)com. "Letters of Skin" is the name the artist gives to her five xilographies [sic] (i.e., xylography or woodblock print). "Her five xilographies represent the fundamental human reality in its lyric, symbolic and erotic meaning; reality which can be obtained in art much more perfectly than in the world" (from the Prologue). The five woodblock prints in this portfolio are numbered, and the limitation number (44/300) and year of production (1966) are individually designated by hand in pencil. In addition, Weintruab has signed her name in ink below the colophon. Each print measures approximately 41 x 28.5 cm on stiff Dutch paper. The very bottom edge of the prints show slight soiling and a little creasing; otherwise each is in excellent condition. The stiff card folder is quite worn and soiled and the folds of it have been reinforced with clear tape. The other inserted material shows slight wear but, with the exception of the photo page (showing a young Weintraub and the poet Tomat-Guido), which has a stain across the bottom edge, everything else is unmarked. .

        Beautiful Losers.

Viking Press, New York 1966 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Leonard Cohen on the title page. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Beautiful Losers is an expression of the 1960's. Leonard Cohen wrote it while fasting and consuming amphetamines to focus his creativity. The product is a complex novel that uses a range of literary techniques, allusions, and symbolism (Adria, 1990). It is noted for its excesses of language and sexuality, and it is filled with the mysticism and drug-use that is emblematic of the era (Goldie, 2003). In a similar manner, the plot is not a linear, coherent progression. Key scenes repeat themselves, and there is no intelligible timeline. Beautiful Loser's gained great popularity when Cohen turned from writer to popular singer-songwriter, and it is remembered for having introduced postmodernism to the Canadian literary canon.         Original Painting for the Artists Tower of Protest (also known as: "The Peace Tower")

Original painting for the 1966 "Artists Tower of Protest" (also known as "The Peace Tower"). Approximately 24" x 24". Signed on the rear "Angela Kosta" on an affixed label with her Chicago address. Modest corner wear, but near fine. The painting in white, orange, and red, depicts a figure hugging its knees, confined in a triangle which is itself within a circle. The Peace Tower was a 58-foot steel tetrahedron erected in 1966 on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles to protest the Vietnam War. This two-foot by two-foot work on plywood, painted by artist Angela Driessen-Kosta, was one of 418 panels that were attached to the structure designed by the sculptor Mark di Suvero. Artists from around the world contributed to the tower, including Elaine de Kooning, Roy Lichtenstein, and Robert Rauschenberg (who provided the bulk of the funding to complete the work).According to Driessen-Kosta: "My intention was to create an 'anti-war' poster. The central figure is expressing grief and is in a confined or 'hopeless' space. The bright colors were used to attract attention but also resemble a 'stop sign' as in stop wars." She received a degree in art education from Western Michigan University and did postgraduate work at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She was a photographic set and window display designer in Chicago for 16 years, then moved to San Diego in 1979, where she mounted numerous exhibitions and received a variety of awards. Her artwork is primarily mixed media and sculptural assemblages. The Peace Tower was dedicated on February 26, 1966 with speeches by Susan Sontag, Irving Petlin, and former Green Beret Donald Duncan. During the three months it stood, the tower and artists were continually under attack. Volunteers from Watts, the recent scene of race riots, assisted in defending it. Efforts were made to relocate the work to another permanent location, but none were successful. Ultimately, the tower itself was dismantled and cut up, the artworks were wrapped in brown paper and anonymously auctioned off by The Los Angeles Peace Center, raising $12,000, according to Art, Politics and Dissent: Aspects of the Art Left in Sixties America (2000) by Francis Frascina. The Peace Tower was controversial for more than just its unpopular position against the Vietnam War. It represented the first instance of American artists coming together to create a collective work of art in political protest. "In order to fully contextualize the Peace Tower as well as other efforts artists would make to combine art and politics in their work from 1966 onward, one must understand how such efforts would have been undesirable and unwelcome in the American fine arts system of the 1960s," wrote Matthew Israel in his book Kill for Peace: American Artist Against the Vietnam War (2013). The Tower is also now a model for organizing collective artistic endeavors. In 2006, the Whitney Museum staged a recreation of the tower in protest of the War in Iraq, and Driessen-Kosta was among the few original Peace Tower artists invited to contribute to this work. A bright and vivid depiction of Vietnam Anti-War art. .
