        Beautiful Losers.

New York: Viking Press, 1966. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Leonard Cohen on the title page. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Beautiful Losers is an expression of the 1960's. Leonard Cohen wrote it while fasting and consuming amphetamines to focus his creativity. The product is a complex novel that uses a range of literary techniques, allusions, and symbolism (Adria, 1990). It is noted for its excesses of language and sexuality, and it is filled with the mysticism and drug-use that is emblematic of the era (Goldie, 2003). In a similar manner, the plot is not a linear, coherent progression. Key scenes repeat themselves, and there is no intelligible timeline. Beautiful Loser's gained great popularity when Cohen turned from writer to popular singer-songwriter, and it is remembered for having introduced postmodernism to the Canadian literary canon.

Extension of the Algebra of Poincare Group Generators and Violation of p Invariance" in JETP Letters: A Translation of JETP Pis';ma v Redaktsiyu of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, 13, No. 8, April 20, 1971 pp. 323-326

RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the paper which pioneered the modern concept of what would later become known as supersymmetry. (A supersymmetry relating mesons and baryons was proposed by Miyazawa in 1966, but did not involve spacetime and was largely ignored). Gol'fand and Likhtman's 1971 work is "the first paper on (relativistic) spacetime supersymmetry" (Baer, Weak Scale Supersymmetry: 3.1a). In particle physics, Supersymmetry as a proposed type of spacetime symmetry  relates two basic classes of elementary particles: bosons, which have an integer-valued spin, and fermions, which have a half-integer spin (Haber, Supersymmetry, Part I, PDG, 8 July 2015). Involving Fermi-Bose symmetry transformation, at the level of quantum mechanics, suypersymmetry employs a quantum operator - or a Q - whose job is to turn bosons into fermions and vice versa. While supersymmetry is now integral to particle physics research, it is interesting to note that this was in no way the intent or subject of Folfand and Likhtman's paper. "Rather than trying to add fermions to a bosonic theory, they were exploring the mathematics of space-time with the primary motivation to do something exotic with the group theory of spacetime symmetries. "The usual group of spacetime symmetries in relativistic quantum field theory is called the Poincare' group. This group includes symmetries under spatial rotations, spacetime boosts and translations in space and time. The action of the  group can be described by the algebra of the group, which is defined by a set of commutation relations between the generators of infinitesimal group transformations. These are all bosonic symmetries, which ought to be so because momentum  conservation and Lorentz invariance are present in classical physics. "But the Poincare' group also has representations that describe fermions. Since spin 1/2 particles arise as solutions to a relativistically invariant equation -- the Dirac equation -- this is to be expected. If there are spin 1/2 particles, could there be spin 1/2 symmetry generators in a spacetime symmetry algebra? Yes! By introducing such symmetry generators Gol'fand and Likhtman have constructed the first example of supercharges mentioned above. What Gol'fand and Likhtman ended up with was the group theory of supersymmetric transformations in four spacetime dimensions, and using this new type of symmetry, they constructed the first supersymmetric quantum field theory" (JETP Letters, 12/29/2013). CONDITION & DETAILS: Individual issue in original wraps. Lancaster, Pennsylvania: American Institute of Physics. 4to (11 x 8.5; 275 x 213mm). Ex-libris with stamp on front wrap (see scan) and no other markings whatsoever. Near fine condition - clean, bright, and tightly bound.

Arthur Penn, Warren Beatty, and Faye Dunaway on the set of "Bonnie and Clyde"

N.p.: N.p., 1966. Original oversize, double weight, borderless photograph of director Arthur Penn and actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway on location in rural Texas during the shooting of "Bonnie and Clyde" during the fall of 1966. Faye Dunaway is brandishing a pistol while Penn describes a scene and Beatty looks on. Photographed by Lee Johnson for the Gamma agency, with Thompson's rubber stamp on the verso, along with a later stamp for the French press agency V.I.P. The beginning of the New Hollywood Cinema. Screenwriters Robert Benton and David Newman shopped their script about the notorious 1920s gangsters to every major American studio, then to Francois Truffaut, and then to Jean-Luc Godard, all to absolutely no avail. A young and reckless Warren Beatty, already an established Hollywood bad boy, took an interest and brought on director Arthur Penn and, for a rewrite, screenwriter Robert Towne. According to legend, Beatty begged Jack Warner on bended knee to green light the production, after which the film barely got an initial release. Eventually, due more to studio politics than interest in the film, it received a general release, due mostly to huge political upheavals at Warner Brothers, whereupon it became a box office smash. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 9.5 x 14 inches. Some faint, shallow creasing at a couple of corners, else bright and quite striking.

Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata. Edited and Completed by Arthur W. Burks.

Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 1966. - First Edition. xix, 388 pp.; 56 figs. Original cloth. Top and bottom of spine rubbed, else Very Good, without dust jacket. 'In the last years of his life, von Neumann broadened his views to the general theory of automata, in a kind of synthesis of his early interest in logic and his later work on computers. With his characteristic boldness and scope of vision, he did not hesitate to attack two of the most complex questions in the field: how to design reliable machines using unreliable components, and the construction of self-reproducing machines. As usual he brought remarkably new ideas in the approach to solutions of these problems and must be considered one of the founders of a flourishing new mathematical discipline' (D.S.B. 14: 92).         DO I HEAR A WALTZ (Inscribed By Stephen Sondheim AND Arthur Laurents)

Random House, New York 1966 - Sondheim, Stephen & Arthur Laurents [Richard Rodgers] DO I HEAR A WALTZ. NY: Random House, (1966). First Edition, first printing. Music by Richard Rodgers, Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Book by Arthur Laurents. A Fine copy in a Very Good priced ($3.95) original dust jacket. The DJ is infamous among collectors, initially printed as orange in color as a New York autumn but with a spine that almost always fades to white over time (reminiscent of a New York winter). This is one of the few examples we've seen where the DJ has retained its orange spine. That said, the DJ has some overall wear, a few chips to the spine tips and corners, some light abrasion. REMARKABLY INSCRIBED BY BOTH STEPHEN SONDHEIM & ARTHUR LAURENTS, a wonderful double presentation with Sondheim providing a charming context for his signature. All in all, a very special copy and a great addition to any collection of American Musical Theater. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Spontaneous Breakdown of Strong Interaction Symmetry and Absence of Massless Particles" in Soviet Physics JETP 24 No. 1 pp. 91-98, January 1967 (A Translation of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; Russian Original Vol. 51, No. 1, July 1966)

      - RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS AND IN ENGLISH OF THE SOVIET HIGGS MECHANISM PROPOSAL. Unlike the Higgs mechanism proposals by Higgs, Brout and Englert, and Guralnik and Hagen, the mechanism proposed by Soviet Physicists AlexanderPolyakov and Alexander Migdal is often overlooked because the publication of their paper was delayed by the bureaucratic process in the Soviet Union -- the 'referee' of the journal initially refused to publish the paper "having received negative and incorrect criticisms from some skeptical senior scientists" (Close, Frank. The Infinity Puzzle: The Personalities, Politics, and Extraordinary Science Behind the Higgs Boson, 146). Although likely unknowable as no date was given for the original submission, many in the scientific community believe that the work of Polyakov and Migdal - two 19-year-old undergraduates working entirely independent of Western scientific development - not only actuallyprecededthat of Brout and Englert - but that in fact their work was very likely first (Close, Frank). In 1964 or 1965 and "in the Soviet Union, the leading solid-state theorist, Anatoly Larkin, posed a challenge to two outstanding undergraduate teenage theorists, Sacha Polyakov and Sacha Migdal: 'In field theory the vacuum is like a substance; what happens there?' [Polyakov and Migdal] took up Larkin's challenge, and answered it, demonstrating that the quantum of radiation - the gauge boson, which starts out massless in the fundamental equations -canbecome massive. Senior colleagues immediately derided them as naïve. Migdal recalls: 'We were stomped to the ground at every seminar [where] we tried to present this work. The most disturbing thing was that nobody would even argue on the subject - the mere mention of 'spontaneous symmetry breaking' caused healthy laughter, which ended the conversation. "Migdal's memoires are that they were victims of Soviet political philosophy polluting scientific thought. 'For the first time since Galileo, the quest for the structure of matter was stopped on political grounds. There is nothing inside [the proton; there has to be] total nuclear democracy - everything consists of everything else. Do not ask whether there was the rabbit inside the hat: you are only allowed to compute how far it will jump and in what direction'" (ibid). Describing Polyakov and Migdal's isolation and methodology, in 2013 the Royal Academy of Swedish Sciences noted: "It is clear though that this paper was completely independent of the development in the West. They set up a field-theoretic framework for a non-abelian gauge theory with a scalar bound state and computed in a spontaneously broken version of the model to all orders in perturbation theory using a Bethe-Salpeter equation to find that the Nambu-Goldstone mode only interacts with virtual particles and is therefore unobservable"(The Beh-Mechanism, Interactions with Short Range Forces and Scalar Particles, Royal Academy of Swedish Sciences, 8 October 2013). "Spontaneous Breakdown of Strong Interaction Symmetry and Absence of Massless Particles" is an English translation appearing in Soviet Physics JETP 24 No. 1 pp. 91-98, January 1967. Soviet Physics JETP is: A Translation of the Journal of Experimental and Theoretical Physics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. The Russian original appeared in July of 1966, Vol. 51, No. 1.         The Collected Works of Jane Bowles

New York: The Noonday Press, 1966. First edition, trade paperback issue, of the collected works of Jane Bowles, with an introduction by Truman Capote. Although Bowles published comparatively little, she was a true writer's writer, a sly prose stylist of great originality, easier to admire than to imitate. This collection contains her stories, her play In The Summer House, and her defining novel Two Serious Ladies: "'Since you live so far out of town,' said Arnold, 'why don't you spend the night at my house? We have an extra bedroom.' 'I probably shall,' said Miss Goering, 'although it is against my entire code, but then, I have never even begun to use my code, although I judge everything by it.' Miss Goering looked a little morose after having said this and they drove on in silence until they reached their destination." Affectionately inscribed by Bowles to Arab-American poet Sam Hazo: "We all wonder what makes Sammy rhyme. Fondly, Jane." The founder of the International Poetry Forum, Hazo did much to promote Arab and African writers in the United States; as longtime residents of Tangier, both Jane and Paul Bowles took an interest in the translation and publication of modern North African writing. Books inscribed by Bowles are notably scarce. A near-fine copy, with an excellent literary association. Octavo, original printed wraps designed by Ronald Clyne. Lightest edgewear, small crease to spine.

Every Building on the Sunset Strip.

Los Angeles: Edward Ruscha, 1966. First edition, second issue. Small octavo, original stiff self-wrappers, original slipcase. Inscribed by Ed Ruscha to his aunt, "For Aunt Carol Ed Ruscha." One continuous accordion-fold page composed of glued paper segments with black-and-white photographs of every building on the sunset strip. Near fine in a very good slipcase. In the 1960s, Ed Ruscha more or less reinvented the artist’s book. By turning away from the craftsmanship and luxury status that typified the livre d’artiste in favor of the artistic idea or concept, expressed simply through photographs and text, Ruscha opened the genre to the possibilities of mass-production and distribution. The 27-foot length of the accordion-folded Every Building on the Sunset Strip affords the viewer two continuous photographic views of the mile and a half section of this landmark stretch of Sunset, one for each side of one of the city’s landmark thoroughfare" (The Getty Research Institute).
