EVERY BUILDING ON THE SUNSET STRIP

(RUSCHA, EDWARD). Ruscha, Edward. EVERY BUILDING ON THE SUNSET STRIP. Los Angeles. 1966 (1970).: Self-Published, Second Printing 1/5000. 8vo. Leporello Wrappers in Slipcase. Artist's Book. Near Fine./No Jacket - As Issued.. One continuous accordion-fold page composed of glued paper segments extending to 296 ½" in length housed in a white paper and silver Mylar-over-cardboard slipcase. "Every Building on the Sunset Strip" is Ed Ruscha's innovative 1966 photographic study that pictures sequentially each architectural facade on both the North and South sides of the fabled Sunset Strip from 8101 - the still extant Jaguar dealership - to 9156 - the late, great Schwab's Pharmacy. Pandora's Box lives! A bright, most handsome example of the 1970 second printing (entry B4 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999", and whose 1966 edition is cited on pages 142-143 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 198-199 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 182-185 of "The Book of 101 Books") limited to five thousand unnumbered copies showing some mild soiling and a slight soft crease along the spine. The slipcase's silver mylar overlay is shiny but lightly scuffed, there is some trivial soiling along the top and bottom edges, and there are separating tears to the white paper covering at each of the corners of the joints at the opening. The publisher's exceedingly fragile and uncommon unprinted white paper wraparound band issued only with the second edition is laid in. Still in all, this is a nice example of a stellar title that looks better in hand than it describes, that has been priced accordingly.         Autograph graphic musical manuscript from the composer's La Passion selon Sade, signed "Syl B" to the distinguished music administrator and author Renée Levine [Packer]

Apparently unique. The present "variation," Chioma di Berenice, is not in the edition of La Passion selon Sade published by Ricordi in 1966. Bussotti composed La passion selon Sade, "a mystère de chambre" to his own libretto after Louise Labé, in 1965-66. According to Grove Music Online, the work received its first partial performance at the Teatro Biondo in Palermo on September 5, 1965; and its first complete performance in Stockholm in 1969. However, Bussotti had already conducted excerpts from the work at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo on March 5, 1965, and in New York City shortly thereafter. Of the Buffalo performance, Levine writes: "Excerpts from Bussotti's chamber opera La Passion selon Sade (1965) provided another unsettling experience. Employing an ensemble with electronics, percussion, piano, and strings, the composer conducted this semi-staged version from a settee placed with its back to the audience. Soprano Sylvia Brigham-Dimiziani, in black cape and hood, had the principal role, using speech, noises, grunts, and melodic episodes in a spectacular fashion. Jay Humeston, cellist, and Michael Sahl, pianist, were directed to flagellate the strings of their instruments with small whips that Bussotti had brought with him from abroad. Others in the ensemble were led on and off stage in ritual-like behavoir." This Life of Sounds: Evenings for New Music in Buffalo, 43-44. Bussotti was an Italian avant-garde composer, artist, writer, and film director. He is well-known for his unusually notated music, which often creates certain interpretive challenges. "Born in France, raised in New York and Mexico City, Levine Packer worked with Lukas Foss and was co-director with Morton Feldman of the renowned contemporary music group in Buffalo, New York, and a director of the Contemporary Music Festival at the California Institute of the Arts. She was Director of the Inter-Arts program at the National Endowment for the Arts, the producer of Steve Reich and Beryl Korot's multimedia opera The Cave, and a dean at the Maryland Institute College of Art." Oxford University Press online.. 1 page, ca. 202 x 250 mm. Dated Buffalo 1965. In colored pencils and black ink, with elements of graphic notation. Inscribed "da 'La Passion selon Sade' variation, 'chioma di Berenice' for Renée Levine (a colori)..." to lower margin. Slightly worn; occasional show-through to blank verso.

        Kyokarakami

[JAPANESE PAPER] KYOKARAKAMI. Kara nagatezuri mokuhan monyo [Kara-cho Designs for Hand-Printed Woodcut Pattern Paper.] Edited by Ansou Hisao. Preface by Osaragi Jiro. Two volumes. Contents includes: 2 ff. prefaces, 102 sheets of decorated papers, printed in colors from the original woodblocks on Kurotani paper, sheet size 390 x 510 mm. Text fascicles loosely inserted in each volume (each 16 pp., with collotype illustrations; small 4to., self-wraps., secured with cord, as issued). Large folio, loose in original publisher's purple silk-covered wooden cases. Tokyo: [Bijutsu Shuppan-sha], 1966-1967. |~||~||~||~||~||~| One of 120 copies. A special publication reproducing kyokarakami (hand-printed woodcut pattern paper) from actual woodblock specimens from the firm Karacho, the oldest surviving studio producing these papers by hand. Founded in Kyoto in the early seventeenth century, Karacho filled the tremendous demand during the beginning of the Edo period to decorate paper doors (fusama), walls, ceilings and folding screens, in temples, imperial villas (as at Katsura) and grand private residences. By the 1830s, thirteen studios were in operation in Kyoto; today, all of them, except Karacho, have disappeared. Karacho preserves more than 600 original woodblocks in its inventory. Of these, some 250 were made in the Edo period after 1789, following a disastrous fire in Kyoto; 200 others date from the Meiji period after 1867, and 150 from the Taisho period, after 1912. This substantial collection presents a selection of the best designs. The sheets are printed on Kuratani (luxurious imported paper) manufactured especially for this publication, and the designs are realized using rare natural materials, such as powdered oyster shell and mica, gold, lacquer, and gouaches derived from natural plants. On account of the fragile nature of the original blocks, many of which have since been withdrawn from use, this publication will never be reprinted. This set of papers, made by Karacho, represent one of the most important source books of Japanese classical design in Kyoto. Some wear to the cases, the papers remain in fine fresh condition. A complete list describing each paper design is available upon request.

        The Fixer [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: FSG. (1966). His fourth novel, which deals with anti-Semitism in Tsarist Russia, and which won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. Inscribed by Malamud: "For Katharine and Mike/ old good friends/ Bern." The authors Michael Seide and Katharine Shattuck were long-time friends of Malamud's, with Malamud having gone so far as to call Seide an "influence" on him. It was Seide who indirectly found Malamud his agent: Seide was Henry Volkening's (of Russell and Volkening) first client, but when Seide recommended Volkening to Malamud and Malamud called the agency, Diarmuid Russell answered the phone, and Russell would remain Malamud's agent throughout his career. Seide wrote The Common Thread in 1944, and then didn't publish another book for nearly forty years. When his book The Common Wilderness was finally released, Malamud was there to blurb it, as "an original, energetic, language wrought, imaginative work by a daring writer." A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with mild fading to the spine lettering and a bit of wear to the crown. An excellent association copy of a multiple award-winning novel. First Edition. Hardcover.

        The Music School

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1966 - First edition, first issue. One corner a tiny bit bumped else fine in slight spine-toned, very near fine dustwrapper with two tiny tears. Inscribed by the author: "for Herb Yellin, John Updike." Herb Yellin was the founder and publisher of Lord John Press and the most frequent of Updike's fine press collaborators. He named his press after noting that the list of authors he wanted to publish all shared the same first name, chief among them John Updike, his favorite. *Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu* became the press's first book in 1977 with 10 more to follow over the next 23 years. Yellin's friendship with Updike grew with each new limited edition benefitting his already enormous Updike collection, with Updike himself contributing copies of new editions of his books - often inscribed. In a 2010 interview with Yellin he noted that Updike ".liked that if anything ever happened to his own collection, he had my collection on the opposite side of the country." A notable association. A scarce book in this issue. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A spectacularly bright white, most handsome example of the 1970 second printing (entry B4 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999", and whose 1966 edition is cited on pages 142-143 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume I", pages 198-199 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and pages 182-185 of "The Book of 101 Books") limited to five thousand unnumbered copies additionally BOLDLY SIGNED "Ed Ruscha" in blue ink across the top of the publisher's still shiny, uncompromised slipcase showing none of the creasing, soiling, or adhesive transfer to the spine that is typical of this title. The publisher's exceedingly fragile and uncommon unprinted white paper wraparound band issued only with the second edition is laid in.
