SPECIMEN PAGES OF KOREAN MOVABLE TYPES: Collected and Described by Melvin McGovern

Dawson's Book Shop, Los Angeles 1966 - Foreword by Kim Chewon, Director, National Museum of Korea. Los Angeles: Dawson's Book Shop, 1966. First edition, a limited edition of 300 copies, 95 of which (copies I-XCV) are the Primary Edition, the remaining are numbered 96 through 300. This is copy #167. It contains eleven original tipped-in specimens printed from movable type, dating from 1604 to 1858, and eleven facsimile specimen pages of movable type dating between 1420 and 1858. Regarded as tour de force of cultural and printing history. It not only portrays the development of movable type in Korea before Gutenberg but also serves as a catalog of movable type technology on the Korean peninsula over a period of over 400 years. Folio. The patterned yellow paper covering the boards was made by Kim Dong-kyu, the only man in the Republic of Korea who still worked at the craft at the time of publication. The traditional blocks used to create the paper are now substantially in museums and private collections. The boards and the white cloth spine with a gilt-stamped black cloth spine label are quite vibrant, and still protected by the original plain paper dust jacket and housed in the publisher's slipcase. Near fine. Betty Hessel [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Existence of Competitive Equilibria in Markets with a Continuum of Traders'. Pp. 1-17 in: Econometrica, Vol. 34, No. 1, Jan., 1966.

1966 - Entire issue offered. Original printed wrappers. Near Fine. The Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2005 was awarded jointly to Robert J. Aumann and Thomas C. Schelling 'for having enhanced our understanding of conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis.' 'In Neo-Walrasian theory, Robert Aumann is perhaps best known for his theory of core equivalence in a 'continuum' economy. Aumann introduced measure theory into the analysis of economies with an infinite number of agents – formalizing the 'perfectly competitive' scenario. In his classical 1964 paper, Aumann proved the equivalence of the Edgeworthian core and Walrasian equilibrium allocations when there are an uncountable infinite number of agents – thereby providing the limit case for future work on core convergence. In order to prove this result was not vacuous, Aumann went on to prove the existence of equilibrium (1966) in this 'perfectly competitive' scenario. On his way, he contributed to mathematics itself by providing a definition of the 'integral' of a correspondence (1965), which was previously absent' (www [dot] newschool [dot] edu/nssr/het/profiles/aumann [dot] htm). 'In order for the economy to be in a stable situation the prices must be such that the total demand equals the total supply. That is the Walrasian competitive equilibrium. That it exists and is well defined in markets with a continuum of traders was shown by Aumann in 1966' (Sergiu Hart & Abraham Neyman, eds., Game and economic theory: selected contributions in honor of Robert J. Aumann, 1995, p. 3). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

JOHANN ADAM KLEIN (1792 - 1875).

Amanita Pestilens (Archive of press material and original photographs from the 1963 film and its production company, Crawley Films)

Crawley Films Limited, Ottawa, Canada 1966 - Archive of press material and photographs for the 1963 Canadian film, and for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the production company, Crawley Films.F.R. "Budge" Crawley was Canada's answer to Hollywood's Sam Goldwyn, and he produced hundreds of films during his 40-year career, including the Academy Award-winning 1975 documentary, "The Man Who Skied Down Everest." "Budge" and his wife Judith founded Crawley Films in 1938 and won the first Canadian film award in 1950. Crawley has been referred to as "the Godfather of Canadian cinema," and rightfully so. Included in the archive are 27 film still photographs with mimeo snipes affixed to the versos (several on-the-set images and a few with director Bonnière); a folder containing 25 letters ("to salute 25 Years") from various French, American, British and Canadian film and government associations (including former Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, and Eric Johnston, president of the Motion Picture Association of America), all dated 1963 with reproduced signatures for press purposes; a promotional brochure on the "new and improved" Crawley Films Limited; 2-page press memos (19) on Crawley parchment (nearly all flat-signed by the company vice president, Graeme Fraser); 3-page press information on the World's Fair in Montreal; French and English film credits sheets; a "how-to" booklet from Crawley discussing the proper ways to produce one's own motion picture (housed in printed company envelope); 2-page "facts" on Crawley Films' 25th anniversary; a letter from Fraser to Jean Vinant, asking her to be the production company agent; 3-page company property breakdown (camera department, script department, sound stages, etc.); several letters to-and-from studio secretary Maryse Martres, signed by persons involved with the film, including director Bonnière; a 27-page ditto-style mimeograph French version of the script; and various telegrams, receipts, and synopses relating to the film. The film itself was the first Canadian feature to be shot in both French and English using the same actors, the first Canadian film shot in color, and an early career appearance for actress Bujold. A man obsessed with his lawn in the suburbs of Montreal has a surprise awakening when mysterious mushrooms start to grow and become impossible to eradicate. He stops at nothing, including a deadly confrontation with his neighbor, to protect his lawn and his reputation. Shot on location in Quebec. Film still photographs 8 x 9.75 inches (20.25 x 24.5 cm), most mimeo snipes loose but present, and many photographs with tape stains as a result of having been stacked. Letters, press material, interoffice material, and other ephemera varying sizes, with most being 8 x 11 inches (20.25 x 27.5 cm). Full collation details available upon request.         I postdiluviani

Edizioni d'Ars, 1966. Fogli sciolti in cartelletta (loose as issued in original portfolio) Poesie di Lamberto Pignotti. Contrappunto ornamentale di Luciano Lattanzi. Ogni tavola è numerata e firmata a matita dai due Autori . 4to (cm 32x23). pp. 4 + 12. Molto Buono (Very Good).

Palermo, 1966. Second Edition. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Luigi Sanfilippo's catalog of Ellington's works, inscribed by the author to Ellington on the half-title: "Friendly a little gift to the great E. K. Ellington." As he writes in the preface, there was a very positive response to his work: "The surprising success of the 1 edition of this book, and above all, the warm encouragement by collectors troughout [sic] the world, have made me decide, after barely one year, to publish a second edition of my modest work." 112 pp. Burgundy leather, stamped in gold; moire endpapers. Area of scuffing to the back cover; light traces of paper to the front cover; edges slightly rubbed; intact and overall in very good condition. 6.5 x 9.75 inches (16.5 x 25 cm).         AS I OPENED FIRE POSTER TRIPTYCH (CORLETT APP. 5)

      - Three offset lithographs in colours, each 24.75 x 20.75 in. (63 x 52.5 cm) each , framed in three separate frames, each 25 x 21 1/2. In very good condition, with nearly impercitable light rippling. This work was conceived in 1966 and published by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. This piece is from one of several editions of over 3,000 printed after 1966, published by the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. Depicting a short few seconds during an aircraft battle, the painting is based on three panels of the original narrative which Lichtenstein has altered to improve its formal coherence. Along with Whaam! (the other of his monumental war paintings), this is regarded as the culmination of the dramatic war-comic works of Lichtenstein. Lichtenstein commented on his war imagery: "A minor purpose of my war paintings is to put military aggressiveness in an absurd light. My personal opinion is that much of our foreign policy has been unbelievably terrifying, but this is not what my work is about and I don't want to capitalize on this popular position. My work is more about our American definition of images and visual communication."

Amanita Pestilens (Archive of press material and original photographs from the 1963 film and its production company, Crawley Films)

Ottawa, Canada: Crawley Films Limited, 1966. Archive of press material and photographs for the 1963 Canadian film, and for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of the production company, Crawley Films. F.R.

        South Viet-Nam.

No Place of Publication.: Mike Roberts Color Productions.. 1966.. Color pictorial map poster, sheet 38 x 25 inches, published folded now archivally linen backed, very good condition. The image of an American aircraft carrier, bombers and helicopters just off the coast of South Vietnam and figures of GIs at strategic locations inland are at odds with the otherwise bucolic picture of the country depicted in the pictographs and the selection of color photo illustrations to the left. Text in the decorative cartouche at lower right describes the country as American involvement in the ongoing war there increases: "Here are village governments, each composed of numberous tiny hamlets, for many years almost untouched by any central government and inclined to be opposed to central authority of any kind - government or Viet Cong. Here is a country with its railroads inoperative because of guerilla action, its highways useable only by armed convoys, depending upon airlifts (and oxen) for vital transport. Here is South Viet Nam, a land of gentle, peaceful people - but the battleground where the destiny of hundreds of millions will be determined in the war of Communism against the Free World." An uncommon map. .

in Russian] We Shall Meet in Orbit.

1966 - photographic portrait frontispiece, several photographic illustrations, first three chapters with numerous pencil annotations, pp. 228, 8vo, pale green boards, cover lettered in silver, with ascending red star motif, spine lettered in silver and red, dustjacket, clipped, worn at folds, frayed at edges, with short tears at upper edge of front and back covers, very good. The author's own copy, with his lengthy annotations and text corrections in pencil in the margins of 21 pages of the first three chapters. [WITH]: [in Russian] Cosmos: Road Without End. Moscow, 1974, photographic portrait frontispiece, numerous photographic plates, pp. 266, (vi), 8vo, dark blue boards, cover lettered in silver with ascending rocket motif, endpapers illustrated with spangled stars, very good. Both books are signed by Nikolaev on the title-pages [in Russian] 'With Best Wishes, 15.9.97' and include an autograph signed note by the author, briefly describing the book's contents, mounted on the final endpaper of each volume. The first book describes the training, flight and aftermath of the Vostok 3 mission of 1962, in which Nikolaev circled the Earth 64 times in 96 hours and appeared on the first television broadcast from space. Besides the traditional images of free fall training and portraits in various types of space suit, Nikolaev is also pictured on a pedalo and with his wife, Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, on their wedding day. The second was written after the 1970 Soyuz 9 mission in which, though he was suffering from a pike bite from a fishing expedition two days before lift-off, Nikolaev set a new endurance record, 18 days in space. Known by Gargarin as 'the most unflappable man in a crisis I know' and by Titov as 'a man of iron endurance and courageous determination', Nikolaev was inundated with Soviet honours and had a conspicuous lunar crater named after him.
