        Tratados [Treatises]

México, D.F.: Fondo de Cultura Economica, 1966. This is a scarce limited edition of the facsimile printing of the work, 'Treatises," commemorating the 400th anniversary of the author´s death. From the series, Cronistas de Indias. No. 131 of 300 numbered copies. Copyright page states first edition 1965 but colophon page states 3 January 1966. Complete in two volumes. NOT ex-library. In Spanish, not in English, save for several pages of forewords in English and one treatise mostly in Latin. Printed and bound in Mexico. Cherry red polished calf, with crisp gilt-stamped lettering and decorative rulings to the hubbed spines. Generally unbumped spine heads and tails, and with sharp corners. Bindings unsoiled and quite attractive. A hint of shelf pull to the lower edges of the boards. 8.75 x 5.75 inches. [22 x 15 cm.] Text blocks firmly bound in. All page edges deckled to a handsome effect. The pastedowns and FEPs in marbled paper of reds, greens and grays. With lxxxvii, 641 and 643-1377 numbered pages. With appendixes and general index. Pages unopened, as issued; i.e., the folding edges of the component sections are still intact at the top and fore-edges, not having been cut. As noted, a facsímile edition, with the facsímile pages on the versos and the transliterations on the opposite rectos. Also with handsomely decorated title pages and embellished capitals throughout, all in B&W. Each volume with a silk satin ribbon page marker. Slipped in is a signed presentation card from sponsor and writer of the foreword, G. Bruno Pagliai. No inscriptions, signatures, labels, bookplate, underlining, highlighting, or other marks observed. Slightest age toning to margins of all pages of both volumes, quite minor. A remarkably clean set of two volumes and a handsome addition to any library shelf on New Spain or the Indians of the Americas. A Very Good Plus copy. These nine inflammatory treatises first appeared, unauthorized, in printed form in Seville, Spain in 1552. All except one appeared in the popular Spanish language and not in the more universal and scholarly Latin. Much has been written on the life and works of the highly controversial Fray Bartolomé de las Casas [1484-1566]. He was a 16th-century Spanish historian, social reformer and Dominican friar. He became the first resident Bishop of Chiapa, and the first officially appointed "Protector of the Indians." As noted in Wikipedia and elsewhere, his extensive writings, the most famous being "A Short Account of the Destruction of the Indies" and "Historia de Las Indias," chronicle the first decades of colonization of the West Indies and elsewhere in the Americas, and focus particularly on the atrocities committed by the colonizers against the indigenous peoples.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Limited Edition.

Easter liturgy in Old Church Slavonic, with title-page and about 20 other pages printed in red and black, the title in a woodcut border and with a woodcut Paschal lamb, a full-page engraving of Jesus's Resurrection on the back of the title-page, and all pages after the title-page with borders made up of 4 woodcut strips.       - For the Kiev bindery: S. A. Klepikov, "Historical notes on Ukrainian bookbinding", in: The book collector, 15 (1966), pp. 135-142. A Russian Orthodox service book for Easter and the week following it, in the Old Church Slavonic language, printed, published and bound at the Pechersk Lavra (Monastery of the Caves) in Kiev. The monastery was established in the 11th century. After the fall of Constantinople in 1453 the Orthodox Churches in Russia and Ukraine developed independently. The power of the Czars allowed the Russian Orthodox Church to dominate, so that the Ukrainian Church came under the Moscow Patriarchate in 1686. The Monastery of the Caves is therefore now Ukrainian Orthodox, but fell under the authority of the Russian Orthodox Church when the present service book was published. It nevertheless had its own traditions and rites, so that the present book should be regarded as part of the Ukrainian heritage. The only other copy we have located is at Amsterdam University Library, one of three Easter service books by the Kiev Pechersk Lavra recorded on WorldCat, all octavos. With a lengthy cyrillic inscription on an endleaf. The sewing is somewhat loose and as a result a few leaves are tattered at the edges. There are occasional minor smudges and drops of candle wax. Much of the gold-tooling has rubbed off the binding and the spine is slightly damaged. In spite of these minor defects, the book is in good condition, especially for a book of this nature.

Un apres-midi avec Picasso 85 ans. (An Afternoon with Picasso at 85).

[Cannes, , 1966]. Quarto (285 × 233). 20 typed sheets in French (rectos only), legibly hand-corrected throughout by Brassai in black ink. Housed in a black cloth album, with each sheet in a separate clear plastic file. In excellent condition, the final page a little creased and with minor loss to right-hand side, affecting one letter. Overall fresh and clean. A superb unpublished and heavily corrected manuscript in French, in which Brassai recounts his visit to Picasso, a long-standing friend, at his home near Cannes. Brassaï, who photographed much of Picasso's work in the 1940s, had published Conversations with Picasso in 1964, in which he created an intimate portrait of Picasso, covering their friendship and artistic collaboration, and recording each of their meetings with minute detail. Picasso said of the volume, "Read this book if you want to understand me." This account is written in a similar style, and during the course of the afternoon, Picasso speaks about his nostalgia for his old studios, his health, his enthusiasm for the recently invented felt-tip pen, his opinion of his own writings, his relationship with his wife Jacqueline, and his views on feminism. Though unmarked as such, it is from the collection of Brassai's close friend and colleague, photographer Stefan Lorant, who founded Picture Post, the pioneering pictorial magazine.

Program for the Second Piatigorsky Cup: International Grandmaster Chess Tournament July 17 to August 15, 1966

Piatigorsky Cup Committee, Santa Monica 1966 - 16 unpaginated pages with facsimiles, photographs. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's spiral spine with red wrappers and cup in silver and black to cover. Signed by all participants next to their photograph in the program along with a short biography of each contestant. (Not listed in Betts) First edition. After the success of the First Piatigorsky Cup (1963), the second was organized by Gregor and Jacqueline Piatigorsky in Santa Monica, California at the Miramar Hotel from July 17-August 15, 1966, with Isaac Kashdan directing. The stellar field included the current and next two World Champions plus a slew of Candidates-level grandmasters in a double-round robin event: Jan Hein Donner, Robert James Fischer, Borislav Ivkov, Bent Larsen, Miguel Najdorf, Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Boris Spassky, Wolfgang Unzicker. The Piatigorskys invited both Reshevsky and Fischer in spite of the Fischer - Reshevsky (1961) match fiasco. The 1966 Piatigorsky Cup tournament ranks as on of the strongest chess competitions ever held on American soil. It is on a short list that includes New York 1924, New York 1927, and the Sinquefield Cups. Held during the Cold War, when tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were high, the Piatigorsky Cup represented a triumph of diplomacy. The tournament was a double-robin competition in which all participants played each other twice. The Piatigorskys produced an elegant trophy for the event that featured a "love cup" designed by Tiffany & Company as it centerpiece. With Bobby Fischer participating in the event, ensured that the top American talent of the period was represented in the competition. It also meant that the field of ten players contained one World Champion (Petrosian) as well as two future ones (Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky). After a strong start followed by a disastrous performance mid-tournament Fischer mounted an amazing comeback to tie with the tournament leader Spassky, in the standings. Their game in the penultimate round attracted a record 900 spectators and served as a preview of the excitement the two would generate six years later in their epic 1972 World Chess Championship match in Reykjavik, Iceland. The two played a hard fought draw. Spassky then won his lat game against Jan Hein Donner, who was at the bottom of the standings, while Fisher's game against Petrosian ended in a draw. Spassky achieved a narrow victory over Fischer, winning $5000. Condition: Some of the combs in the spiral binder chipped off else a near fine copy.         The Sound of Thunder (SIGNED 1st PRINTING of the 1st BRITISH EDITION)

William Heinemann 1966 - Superb, unrivaled signed copy of this rare book. Look at the photos to see what I mean. This book is in fabulous condition for its age, and the fragility of these dust jackets. Some wear to DJ but the red of the spine is barely faded, and the original price of 30s is intact. Many DJs for this book have no red on their spine due to major sun-fading. The DJs for this 1966 book are almost always found in bad condition with large tears, bad fading, and large pieces missing (chips). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

'You Only Live Twice' (released through United Artists). Six original photographs for 'Cinema 66' magazine.

n.d. [25th August 1966]. Six original black and white photographs of Sean Connery as James Bond, taken on location in Japan during the filming of Ian Fleming's You Only Live Twice. Three photos capture a relaxed Connery in full Japanese costume, in between takes. The other three photos were taken on the actor's 36th birthday, which took place on set; one shows Connery in the daytime wearing a simple fisherman's costume whilst cutting a cake, and the remaing two show him at an evening party, with 'Happy Birthday' banners, dancing in a Kimono. Director Lewis Gilbert appears in two of the images, as does the Assistant Director Bill Cartlidge. Many thanks to John Gilbert, son of Lewis Gilbert, for assisting this cataloguer (Jon Gilbert) in person on 12th June 2012. Approx. dimensions 30 x 24cm. Fine condition. These are FILE images, taken for a French film magazine 'Cinema 66', and bear the Italian photographer's credit 'Copyright Pierluigi' to the verso. Each print also bears the distributor's stamp 'APIS - PARIS' and has an extensive text on the rear, typed in French. These were obtained when the archives of the publication were dispersed; it is most likely these are the only such prints, the negatives for which are likely no longer in existence. Quite possibly a unique set of images, from the vintage, Golden-era of the cinematic James Bond. Sold without copyright.

Program for the Second Piatigorsky Cup: International Grandmaster Chess Tournament July 17 to August 15, 1966

16 unpaginated pages with facsimiles, photographs. Spassky achieved a narrow victory over Fischer, winning $5000.Condition:Some of the combs in the spiral binder chipped off else a near fine copy.

[La marche des Hébreux sous la nuée divine] For the cloude of the Lorde was upon the Tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel thorowout all their journeys.

(Pierre Cabanne, in Cinquante années de lithographie).
