        Ficciones.

Buenos Aires: Emecé Editores,, 1966. Octavo. Original grey wrappers, spine and front wrapper lettered in black and red. Spine creased and faded, extremities rubbed, text block toned. A very good copy. Second edition, seventh impression, signed by the author on the half-title. This copy is from the library of Jorge Luis Borges's controversial English-language translator, Norman Thomas di Giovanni (1933–2017), though unmarked as such. Produced in collaboration with Borges, di Giovanni's translations were the first concentrated efforts to translate the majority of Borges's works into English. The working relationship between di Giovanni and Borges was so close that di Giovanni was given a creative credit and a share of the royalties. Borges published his second collection of fiction El Jardin de senderos que se bifurcan in 1941. The eight stories contained in this collection were combined with six new stories under the collective title of Ficciones in 1944. The second edition of Ficciones, first published in 1956, saw the first publication of three short stories by Borges: "The End", "The Sect of the Phoenix", and "The South".

        Theory of Self-Reproducing Automata

Urbana, IL: University of Illinois Press [1966], 1966. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good+/Very Good. 388 pp. Price of $10.00 on front flap of dust jacket, and the British price of 75 s. on the bottom of the front flap of the dust jacket. Edited and completed by Arthur W. Burks. Von Neuman made important contributions to set theory, game theory, and to many other branches of mathematics. In this book, he describes the logical design of a universal constructor, a machine capable of self-replication. A profound consequence of this result is that the complex evolution observed in living organisms could, in principle, be replicated by machines. A presentable copy of a landmark book that is uncommon and quite difficult to find in collectible condition. A Very Good+ book with foxing to the textblock and a moderate lean in a Very Good dust jacket with a few hints of rubbing and fading to the spine panel and foxing to the reverse of the jacket.

        The Egyptian Stroboscope.

Cleveland, OH: Chickenfat & Seven Flowers Press, for The Asphodel Book Shop,, 1966. Small folio. Original wrappers, stapled, silkscreen scarab illustration laid down to front. Black and white illustrations in the text, silkscreen scarab illustration laid down within, colour-stamped index plate. Somewhat creased and chipped around the edges, a few small stains, but very good condition. First edition, limited issue, one of 105 copies of this extraordinary mimeographic extravaganza, an occult poem, with several deliberately illegible concrete sections, inspired (so claims the facetious Bibliography) on the one hand by Wallis Budge's Egyptology books and Fraser's Golden Bough, and on the other by DC Comics' Prince Ra-Man and Marvel's Dr. Strange. The 1967 second printing notes that "this was one of the publications confiscated by the Cleveland Police in the December 1966 Blitz-Bomb", when Levy was indicted for distributing obscene poetry to minors. The Egyptian Stroboscope is, as such, a considerable rarity of the Cleveland mimeo revolution, with only five copies recorded by OCLC in libraries worldwide, all in US institutions.
