        Thomas Hardy

      c. 1965. Sheet size: 191 × 140 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper, unusually signed by Bentley's initials only. Pencil title on verso. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

I Love You, I Hate You, Drop Dead!: Variations on a Theme

Fleet Publishing Corporation, New York 1965 - First edition. A couple of stains on the boards, a good or better copy in supplied, near fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by the musician to Carol Southern, wife of Shaw's very close friend, Terry Southern: "To Carol - Since we've already got Terry-Baby on the back, here you are, right in front - With love - Artie Shaw 4/16/65." The first of five blurbs that appear on the rear panel of the jacket is from Terry Southern. Shaw was particularly drawn to literary circles and, according to his biographer Tom Nolan, he "savored most of all his acquaintanceship with authors," including Southern. The two had became close friends when Southern returned to the U.S. in 1959. They were both looking for homes in East Canaan, Connecticut and Southern actually talked Shaw into letting him buy the house that Shaw had already put a deposit on. When Shaw retired from music, which he did several times during his long career, it was primarily to write. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Kandy-Kolored Tangerine-Flake Streamline Baby

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1965. First edition of the author's first book that launched New Journalism. Octavo, original white cloth. An excellent near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of shelfwear. Signed by Tom Wolfe with his characteristic signature. A The now famous "Kandy" memorandum enabled Wolfe to recognize that feature journalism--in particular, magazine writing--could achieve added depth and realism by fusing the stylistic features of fiction and the reportorial obligations of journalism to form a "novelistic-sounding"--but still factually constrained--literature. This discovery would impel a receptive Wolfe to further cross traditional journalistic boundaries once the strike was settled at the New York Herald Tribune and he returned to work as a feature writer. "An excellent work by a genius." (Kurt Vonnegut)
