A Sense of Where You Are: A Profile of Princeton's Bill Bradley.

Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York 1965 - First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original black cloth. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "For Hazel and Louis Landa I can hear you saying to one another: "Has he some quelque chose of his own upon the anvil?" "I expect it from him since poor Bradley helped to make him rich." With much affection, John McPhee December 25, 1965." Louis Landa was a close colleague of McPhee's at Princeton, where he taught English and was also an authority on Jonathan Swift. Some sunning to the spine cloth, near fine in a bright near fien price-clipped dust jacket without the usual fading to the spine. First published in 1965, A Sense of Where You Are is the literary equivalent of a harmonic convergence, a remarkable confluence of two talents--John McPhee and Bill Bradley--at the beginning of what would prove to be long and distinguished careers. "Immensely well-written, inspiring without being preachy, and contains as well the clearest analyses of Bradley's moves, fakes, and shots that have appeared in print" (The New York Times Book Review). "In 1964, when ARPA [Advanced Research Projects Agency] put out a request for a computer modent that simulated 'major aspects of internal revolutionary conflict', ... Clark Apt responded. ... Apt's researchers determined that the most important elements in defeating counterinsurgency were 'information,' 'loyalty,' and 'effective miliary force.' Apt used the struggle for these elements ... as the basis for a game at first called Agile-coin..." See Allen, WAR GAMES, p. 180 - 181. This then the report of Apt's computer gaming efforts, which "presents the feasibility of a computer model based on game findings that simulate some of the major aspects of the terror-phase of internal revolutionary conflict." This war game is often cited as one of the earliest computer games to be developed. Appendix C (some 55 pages, including folding tables) reproduces flow charts for computer decision-making during the game. A significant, and rather uncommon, document in the trade. .         FLINTSTONES ORIGINAL ART: FRED AND BARNEY

      - FLINTSTONES [HANNA-BARBERA]. FLINTSTONES ORIGINAL ART: FRED AND BARNEY. Offered here is a fabulous watercolor circa 1965 used for a Spanish Language book about the Flintstones. Although there is no indication that this is from a Spanish book, it was purchased with other art from a Spanish edition. In Spanish, the Flintsones are known as "Los Picapiedras". When the Flintstones premiered in 1960, it became the first prime time cartoon series made specifically for TV and it is still popular today. It was also very successful in Spanish speaking countries (especially Mexico and Venzuela). The colors in this artwork are vibrant and the image makes you smile. The image measures 9 3/4 x 12" done on art board 13 x 16. Sl. finger soil on edges, near fine. This is a great image of Fred and Barney dancing in front of their house with Dino scowling in the background.

        The Orchard Keeper.

Random House, New York 1965 - First edition of the author's rare first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by the author on the title page. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Books signed by McCarthy are uncommon, especially his earlier novels. The novels of Cormac McCarthy owe much to William Faulkner, especially in their "use of dialect and concrete sense of the world— a debt McCarthy does not dispute. 'The ugly fact is books are made out of books,' he says. 'The novel depends for its life on the novels that have been written.' "Cormac McCarthy is expert in generating an emotional climate, in suggesting instead of in stating, in creating a long succession of brief, dramatic scenes described with flashing visual impact" (The New York Times).         THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN

Cape , 1965. Cape , 1965. First edition, first state binding with the publisher's golden gun embossed on the front panel. A fine copy, with a little foxing to the page edges and a biro mark to the front pastedown, but with the susceptible large area of gilt bright and untarnished, in a fine (price-clipped) dustwrapper. All Fleming's previous novels have a decorated front board, and it was the publisher's intention to do the same with this book. A decision was made, very early in the process, that to block the whole print run with such a large expanse of foil, would be financially prohibitive. "According to the publisher's book production files... the original estimate allowed for just four and a half square inches of foil-stamping [the executed design measured nearly nineteen square inches]... The decision to cease stamping a golden gun was purely economical..." - Gilbert (Ian Fleming The Bibliography). Also according to publisher's records, 940 copies were thus blocked, a larger number than had previously been thought (though still a tiny proportion of the 82,000 copies of the first edition printed). The reason for its apparent extreme scarcity was that being the earliest copies, they were all sent to the colonies, principally Australia and South Africa. Nevertheless it remains by far the scarcest recognised discreet state of any James Bond book. Gilbert A31a1.1

        Null Harold Miller 1916-1996
