Bringing to the Presidency his prestige as commanding general of the victorious forces in Europe during World War II, "Ike" obtained a truce in Korea and worked incessantly during his two terms to ease the tensions of the Cold War. Includes numerous textual illustrations and maps. Octavo. Original tan cloth bindings, with green and gilt stamping. Both volumes are nearly fine in the original acetate dust wrappers. The slipcase of the first volume is starting to split along an upper seam, with the shadow of a small label to one panel and some minor shelfwear overall. One leaf, measuring 227 × 149 mm, folded twice (to be tucked inside the paperback). The letter is in fine condition, book is near fine with a couple of minor rubs to joints. Housed in an elegant gilt-titled cloth covered case. A rare piece of Bondiana.

November angekündigte 'Beatband-Stück' von Ende November bis Ende Dezember 1965 und sandte das Typoskript der letzten Fassung, die sich im Siegfried Unseld Archiv (Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach) erhalten hat, noch Anfang Januar an den Verlag. - Selten lässt sich der Entstehungsprozess eines literarischen Werkes so vielfältig nachleben wie hier.

      Peter Pongratz war Peter Handke seit dessen Studium in Graz und im Umfeld des Forum Stadtpark und der Zeitschrift manuskripte freundschaftlich verbunden. Von Otto Breicha empfohlen, hat er im Mai 1965 an der Jugendkulturwoche in Innsbruck teilgenommen, wo ihn der nichteingeladene Peter Handke besuchte und in einem Dialog mit Gertrud Fussenegger Äusserungen zum Schreiben verlautbart hat, die jenen im Rahmen der Gruppe 47 Tagung in Princeton, genau ein Jahr später, um nichts nachstehen. Als Handke mit seiner Tochter 1973 nach Paris übersiedelt ist, hat Pongratz und seine Frau eine zeitlang mit ihm zusammengewohnt. Bereits 1967 hatte er sich in den 'protokollen' über Pongratz geäussert. 1972 war eine Gouache von Pongratz als Deckelbild für 'Der kurze Brief zum langen Abschied' verwendet worden. Den Kriminalroman 'Der lange Abschied' von Raymond Chandler als Ullstein-Krimi hatte Handke während seines Innsbruckaufenthalts 1965 stets griffbereit.- Vergröbert vom Hausgrafiker der Zeitschrift 'profil'. Das unabhängige Magazin Österreichs. Nr. 9, 27. April 1973, 4. Jahrgang, als Titelbild verwendet. Passepartout, gerahmt.
