Prynne and printed by the Borough Press Limited. The design and layout is by Ross Hill.<p>This RARE Prynne issue, includes the first publication of his poems "Salt Water, Fresh Water", "At the Dark Centre", "Lie of the Other Land", and his translation of Guido Cavalcanti's "Chi E", as well as the first publication of his essay "Tomorrow is Fade Out Night" which was his review of Douglas Woolf's "Fade Out".<p>"The last page of Prospect 5 closed on the note to subscribers that ‘The Editor for the next and future issues will be J.H. Prynne' and that contributions should be sent to him in Cambridge....The serious nature of this re-established magazine is immediately felt when one looks at the line-up of contributors to Prospect 6: Edward Dorn's long poem ‘The Land Below' and his ‘On the Debt My Mother Owed to Sears Roebuck', Charles Olson's ‘Going Right Out Of The Century', a poem from 1961 which would be included in Maximus IV, V. VI, Robert Creeley's story ‘The Grace', work by Andrew Hoyem, Andrew Crozier, Donald Davie, the former editor Tony Ward and four of Prynne's own poems, that were to remain uncollected, including ‘Salt Water, Fresh Water': There is a detailed account of some aspects of this poem in Birgitta Johansson's book, The Engineering of Being (Umea University 1997) in which she sees the poem as an address to ‘the world from the position of the condition of being, represented by the mind, which perceives the ‘wash/and seething life' of the sea'. Johansson relates this poem to Matthew Arnold's ‘Dover Beach' in that ‘its rhythms reflect the endless repetition of the waves in its stress pattern' but also recognises that whereas Arnold discusses how the milieu reflects the mood of the speaker's soul ‘Prynne addresses the dynamic structure of mind and of the landscape.' ... Prospect 6 appeared in the second half of 1964 and, as it turned out, it was the last issue." [Excerpted from Ian Brinton's "Prynne in Prospect"].

Contributions to the Theory of Games. Volumes I-IV; [offered together with:] Advances in Game Theory, edited by M. Dresher, L. S. Shapley and A. W. Tucker.

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1950-53-57-59 & 1964 - Together 5 volumes, large octavo and octavo. Original orange paper wrappers printed in black. Some light creasing to sunned spines, spine ends very gently rubbed, overall an excellent set. Ownership inscription of R. S. Weinberg to front wrappers. First editions of the complete run of this important Game Theory journal, together with the follow up study, Advances in Game Theory, issued as volumes 24, 28, 39, 40 and 52 of the periodical Annals of Marthematics Studies. Contributors include Melvin Dresher, David Gale, John Nash, and John von Neumann, among others, Volume II includes Lloyd Shapley's groundbreaking 1953 paper, "A Value for n-person Games", which gave rise to the solution concept dubbed the "Shapley value". While Contributions aimed to provide an initial response to von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern's pioneering work, Theory of Games and Economic Behavior (1944), Advances in Game Theory "has a different reason for existence. The field of game theory is now well established and widely diffused through the mathematical world, thanks in part to the success of the earlier volumes; papers on game theory regularly appear in many scientific journals. But with no single, specialised journal as focal point, there remains a serious problem of communication within the field . Accordingly, this Study was conceived as a one-volume cross section of current activity in the theory of games" (Preface).         Programme de la premiere manifestation de Libre Expression.

J.-J. Lebel., Paris. 1964 - Unpublished poster for the Festival de Libre Expression (Festival for Free Expression), the first of such festivals organised by Jean-Jacques Lebel between 1964 and 1967. Lebel quickly became infamous for his festivals of erotic happenings advocating free sexuality as a means to liberate experience - a philosophical position he had learned, in part, from Dada and surrealist mentors and friends like Breton and Picabia. LebelÕs festivals epitomised the alternative perspective that characterised the 1960s, and they were a key source of that decadeÕs radical identity. They acted as an international forum for artists, poets, musicians, and filmmakers, combining the art of Carolee Schneemann, Ben Vautier, Bazon Brock, Tetsumi Kudo and George Brecht, with jazz musicians such as Johnny Griffin and Art Taylor. The first of these festivals ran from the 25th to the 30 May 1964. This is the original printed maquette for the proposed festival poster, designed by Ben Vautier. The poster was never actually realised. Inscribed by Lebel in pen along the lower edge if the sheet: ÒAffiche imprim&#142;e a Nice par Ben en 1964 et jamais utilis&#142;e parce que incomplete, pour Marcel, J.J. LebelÓ. Poster printed in black on green stock.

        Original MUNDUNCULUM drawing.

1964 - Widely regarded as one of Dieter RothÕs most important projects, MUNDUNCULUM was a complex visual compendium of drawings. Central to the project was a verbal-visual system based on 23 images Roth designed and had made into a set of rubber stamps. Each image corresponds to a letter (or two) of the alphabet. With this stamp alphabet Roth produced several drawings and poems in visual code. The direct correspondence between stamp images and letters of the alphabet is complicated by the additional meaning Roth gives to some of the images according to the direction they face on the page, as well as by his assignment of gender to individual letters. the resultant multidirectional drawings combine visual and syntactic communication systems to ultimately produce a non-semantic poetry. In other wordss, it is poetry to be seen rather than read. Like other drawings related to the MUNDUNCULUM project, this one is executed on an irregular piece of folded transparent tracing paper. The drawing consists of four slightly different motifs, each made from the same two stamps, with variations gained from the degress of rotation of the stamps. One of the stamps used in the drawing is something akin to a manÕs profile as seen from an overhead perspective. According to Roth, this particular image is connected to forty-eight different words including ego, god, sack, cloud, embryo, ball, and spy. So, to say the least, decoding the meaning of this drawing may prove elusive. The drawing is signed with the artistÕs monogram and dated: D.R. 64. [For other examples, see: Dirk Dobke - Dieter Roth Unique Pieces, pp. 118-121, & 226-228]. Rubber stamp in on an irregular piece of transparent tracing paper.

        A Cellarful of Noise

Inscribed by Brian Epstein to the front endpaper to his Grandmother ("Gangan"), with a letter of provenance from Brian's nephew. The book is firmly bound in slightly rubbed, bumped and marked blue cloth. The text block is toned, with minor marking and a distinct aroma of old tobacco smoke. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is slightly toned, grubby and nicked, with a number of closed tears. Epstein's account, albeit with the aid of a ghost-writer in the form of his assistant Derek Taylor, of his rise to the top of the British music industry, chiefly via his discovery and management of the Beatles, though with a nod to the other major artists of the period who benefitted from his talents as a manager and promoter. It is quite uncommon as a first edition and copies with personal inscriptions and such excellent provenance as this are rare.

Yankee Doodles under $300. Original mailed invitation.

1964 - A pivotal event in 1964 was the exhibit ÔThe American SupermarketÕ, a show held in Paul Bianchini's Upper East Side gallery in New York. The show was presented as a typical U.S. small supermarket environment, except that everything in it from the produce, canned goods, meat, posters on the wall, etc. were created by six prominent pop artists of the time including Billy Apple, Robert Watts and Andy Warhol. The exhibition was one of the first mass events that directly confronted the general public with Pop art. The next Bianchini show was an exhibition of drawings by the same artists, running from December 1 to December 31, 1964. Bianchini adopted the name ÔYankee Doodles under $300Õ for the show. Artists included Warhol, Billy Apple, Richard Artschwager, Bob Watts, Mel Ramos, Roy Lichtenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Tom Wesselman and Jerry Foyster. This is the original mailed invitation to the show, folded for posting, and printed with red stripes (reminiscent of the American flag), with the artistÕs names printed in blue between the stripes. Sheet torn along edges due to opening of the mailing. Ephemera relating to this second of BianchiniÕs Pop shows of 1964 remain scarce. Only one other copy of this invitation can be found at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Gerd Richter. Bilder des Kapitalistischen Realismus.

Galerie Ren&#142; Block., Berlin. 1964 - Coinciding with the first major European exhibition of New Realism and Pop Art travelling from Amsterdam to the Akademie der K&#159;nste in Berlin, Ren&#142; Block opened his first one-man solo show by Richter, which he called ÔBilder des kapitalistischen RealismusÕ. Of note, at this early time of his career, Richter still named himself ÔGerdÕ rather than Gerhard. This is the original invitation card for the exhibitionÕs opening night. The exhibition was to be held from the 18 November 1964 until the 5 January 1965, and indeed the planned opening night of the 17th November is printed on this invite. In fact the date of the opening was delayed until the 21 November. A rare piece of ephemera, especially in such fine condition. Single sheet of orange card, printed in black on single side.
