Hachicho, "Travel books about the Arab Near East in the eighteenth century", in: Die Welt des Islams, vol. 9 (1964), no. 1/4, pp. 69-70; not in Atabey; Blackmer; Tiele. Very rare first and only Dutch edition of Samuel Evers's A journal, kept on a journey from Bassora to Bagdad (1784). Evers was a lieutenant in the East India Company, serving in India. In 1779 he decided to leave the Company and to return to England. Rather than sailing directly to England, he sailed through the Persian Gulf to Basra and continued by boat to Baghdad, then crossed the desert to Aleppo, continuing to Cyprus, Rhodes and through Italy to England. On his return he anonymously published a narrative of the journey. It includes noteworthy descriptions of Baghdad and Aleppo with accounts of their government, inhabitants, caravanserais, etc.The present Dutch translation is augmented with numerous annotations by the translator and a 2-page letter by Vaslin, Dutch consul in Alexandria, on the French admiral and diplomat Laurent Truguet. It further includes the text of two treaties between France and Egypt, both negotiated by Truguet, concerning the free passage of French ships through the Red Sea to Suez and the safeguard of French merchants in Suez.Bookplate on back of half-title and two library stamps on title-page (one embossed). In very good condition and only slightly trimmed. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Arted, Editions d'Art, Paris, 1964 OFFERING: Example no. 38 of 100 from the deluxe issue of the first edition, complete with the commissioned drypoint etching printed on Arches paper, "Combat Antique" [Czwiklitzer 47]. The etching is numbered and boldly signed in pen & ink by Zadkine and the book is stamped 38 on the justification leaf. The deluxe issue was the sole limited edition issue of this important work on the great Belarusian sculptor and was published only in English. Texts include three essays on the life and work, the first extensively researched catalogue raisonné of the sculptures, and the first comprehensive bibliography. This example is exceptional, for it also has an additional, large and superb Zadkine autograph and a signed presentation in English by Ionel Jianou. The b/w etching with its unusual, large gatefold format, with a die-cut 'clerestory window' has two viewing states and stands out, for its multi-perspective design and aversion theme. Unfolded and open, it extends 10.5 x 32.4 inches (266 x 824 mm) without margins and shows ten nude antagonists, eight men attacking or protecting two women. Folded twice and closed, the 'clerestory window' shows a view of the head of the tenth figure, the youngest and smallest man, with an antagonist's hand pressed over his mouth. CONDITION DETAIL: Etching: some bottom edge wear near corners, top edge with trace soiling, fold lines with light wear. / Tissue Leaves: Fine. / Pages: clean and fresh. / Boards: clean; some fading to spine edges at crown and foot, outer tips slightly bumped, crown with slight push-in. / Binding: excellent, spine with light slant. / Book Jacket (now in a protective transparent wrapper): Upper side bright, two edge peels from tight case (one-top, one-bottom); Lower side with yellowing at top and bottom edges; Spine yellowed, crown and foot with light push-in and a minute tear. / Slipcase: light edge wear, bottom corner with two small stains. PAGINATION: Complete; 208 pages illustrated with 98 fine b/w reproductions, most full-page, (one double-page), chiefly an exemplary suite of photograph reproductions of his sculptures, cited in the Grove Dictionary of Art. Two works are accompanied by additional commentary, "Destroyed City" (in the artist's studio), a memorial to the horrors of war and the WWII bombing of Rotterdam by Germany and "Portrait of Van Gogh", from his series of Van Gogh portraits. FORMAT: Publisher's sewn viridian cloth stamped with gilt letters and b/w pictorial book jacket, the upper side reproducing Zadkine's celebrated 1951 sculpture, "Destroyed City" in its public installation. The book is sleeved in an unlettered gray linen and cotton board slipcase with decorative netting pattern. SIZE: 279 x 213 mm. ADDITIONAL IMAGES: by request.

Insgesamt betrug die Auflage 160 Exemplare, die übrigen 100 Exemplare erschienen jedoch lediglich numeriert und ohne die Radierungen Schumachers.
