Weitere 150 Exemplare wurden zusätzlich gedruckt und von I bis CL numeriert. Das Zerkall-Bütten wurde für dieses Buch besonders angefertigt. Beide Ausgaben hat der Künstler im Druckvermerk signiert. 25 Exemplare wurden auf Kaiserlich Japan abgezogen, wovon der Künstler jedes Blatt signiert hat. Jedes Blatt unter Passepartout und in einer Kassette. Dies ist Nummer 30 (der Ausgabe von 850 Exemplaren), der Buchblock nur am Kopf beschnitten. Frans Masereel (* 30. Juli 1889 in Blankenberge - + 3. Januar 1972 in Avignon) war ein bedeutender belgischer Graphiker, Zeichner und Maler, der vor allem für seine beeindruckenden, von starken Emotionen geprägten Holzschnitte bekannt ist.

      Pasadena, CA: np, 1964. First edition. Very Good. BRILLIANTLY WITTY LETTER BY HIGHLY CELEBRATED THEORETICAL PHYSICIST RICHARD FEYNMAN ON ONE OF HIS LECTURES ON PHYSICS. The letter, typed and signed by Nobel Prize-winning physicist Richard Feynman and dated October 27, 1964, is addressed to a Harvard student and reads in full: 27 October 1964 Mr. David ----- Harvard University Adams C-56 Cambridge 38, Massachusetts Dear Mr. ----- : Thank you for your interesting letter describing that wonderful phenomenon. I guess your "zero" is displaced outward but the inner nerve connections are as usual, so you have to "converge" to see parallel. Half way through your letter, I though, "poor guy", but on reading of the manifold advantages that your singular ability has for your [sic], I am going back to the bathroom mirror and practice harder this time, again and again, to see if I can do it too. Evidently you are a genetically advantageous mutation, and we can guess now where the evolution of the human race is headed. Sincerely, [signed] Richard P. Feynman RPF:bb In this letter, Richard Feynman responds to a letter from a Harvard student who had written the CalTech professor after reading his Lectures on Physics-- a comprehensive, lecture-based textbook on physics that is still considered one of the foremost texts on the subject--to inform him of his "relatively rare endowment": "We found that I do have a muscular imbalance which caused my eyes to spontaneously diverge unless the stimulus of identical images forces the muscular control necessary to insure superposition of those images." The student's claim, which he clearly acknowledges is a direct challenge to Feynman's argument in his lecture "Mechanisms of Seeing", in which he writes: "It is impossible consciously or unconsciously to turn both eyes out at the same time, not because there are no muscles, but because there is no way to send a signal to turn both eyes out, unless we have had an accident or there is something the matter, for instance if a nerve has been cut. Although the muscles of one eye can certainly steer that eye about, not even a Yogi is able to move both eyes out freely under voluntary control, because there does not seem to be any way to do it. We are already wired to a certain extent." Despite his refutation of the lecture, Feynman--the irreverently cool, bongo-playing scientist--seems humored and excited by his letter, as he quips: "Evidently you are a genetically advantageous mutation, and we can guess now where the evolution of the human race is headed." Not only a brilliant lecturer and unparalleled computator, the physicist was a remarkably unique personality, a man who was famously "radical in his disrespect for authority, but conservative in his science" (Freeman Dyson). Aside from his iconoclastic and entertaining nature, Feynman was inarguably gifted. Tasked with having to work on the Manhattan Project (Feynman was the youngest group leader in the theoretical division of the program), his post-war work also received serious accolades and in 1965 he was co-awarded (with Tomonaga and Schwinger) the Nobel Prize in Physics for his "fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics, with deep-ploughing consequences for the physics of elementary particles." His foray into academia was fruitful as well; his numerous lectures at CalTech evolved into many books, including Lecture on Physics , Quantum Electrodynamics, and The Theory of Fundamental Processes . Later on in his career, he conducted a televised experiment which dramatically demonstrated the predictability of the 1986 explosion of the space shuttle Challenger. This letter, in addition to being penned the same year that the monumental Lecture on Physics was published and a year before his Nobel Prize win, is significant because of its characteristically "Feynmanian" tone: funny, brash, a little dramatic, and most significantly demonstrating his famous curiosity and love of experimentation, no matter what the subject. Provenance: Acquired directly from the recipient, with a copy of the original letter included. Pasadena, California: October 27, 1964. Quarto, one page, on Feynman's California Institute of Technology letterhead. Signed in ink at the end of the letter. A bit of soiling at extreme margins, evidence of staple at top left corner, and usual folds, otherwise in fine condition.       Basel E. W. Kornfeld 1964 - First edition. Folio (41 x 29 cm). One of 100 copies on vélin d'arches. 66 lithographs, signed and dated on justification page by Ting. Loose in boards, publisher's slipcase. The book of a generation. Walasse Ting (1929 – 2010) was an American artist of Chinese origin with multiple talents. He came up with the idea for the present work with his friend Sam Francis, in Manhattan in 1961 and managed to bring together a great number of avant-garde artists to illustrate a text of his own - Raunchy Pidgin English. Ting was insistent that the book should be printed in the very best quality, and so personally supervised every stage of the publication process. Completed at the end of June 1964, the work became a manifesto for American painting. Each lithograph is signed in pencil by its creator artists, with the exception of the lithographs of Robert Indiana and Robert Rauschenberg, which are stamped instead. Twelve of them also feature technical or humourous inscriptions in their margins by Walasse Ting himself; these, of course, do not appear in the edition on white vellum. "Calder's Circus" consisted of whimsical wire figures created by American artist Alexander Calder. Co-published by Calder's New York gallerist Klaus Perls and by"Art in America" magazine at the time of a 1964 exhibition of vintage circus-related works on paper held at Perls Galleries. Consists of 16 offset lithographs in black ink on heavy paper held by three plastic clips the top one of which is missing the lip. This is the 1964 trade edition - issued unsigned and unnumbered. Laid in is his obituary with photo. Also laid in a VG copy of "Circus Drawings, Wire Sculpture and Toys by Alexander Calder published by Museum of Fine Arts and boldy signed and inscribed by Calder with his trademark initials to Georege Englesmith. Provenance George Englesmith signature. Apparently Englesmith was a member of National Gallery of Canada at that time. Light aging to page edges.       1964 - Original poster (44.5 x 28.9 cm)., one photographic portrait, titles in black, offset. N.p. [New York], N.p. [Harlem Defense League], N.d., An important poster issued during the Harlem Riots of 1964 that was created by a group of 'authentic' working-class, articulate black militants rejecting what they saw as 'white' police power. The poster, and Bill Epton's role in the surrounding events, have been overshadowed to some extent by the much more reported anti-police Watts riots and the funkier fine art graphics of west Coast Black Pantherism. As well as the presence of charismatic figures such as Malcolm X and Huey Newton in radical street literature and agitprop imagery. This inflammatory poster is a fine example of the Maoist trend in worker or summary justice, 'peoples' courts' and so on. Historically, equally as inflammatory anti-police posters have played a pivotal part in either escalating or epitomizing unrest in periods of civil disturbance. These include Robbie Conal's 1991 poster depicting Los Angeles Police Chief Darryl Gates in the crosshairs of a gun range target that was widely pasted on bus shelters and construction site hoardings across Los Angeles metropolitan areas in the wake of the Rodney King brutality case. 'Wanted For Murder' was probably designed almost entirely by the black worker-activist Bill Epton or at least in collaboration with his comrades in the Harlem chapter of the Progressive Labor Movement (PLM), formed of CPUSA splittists and anti-Stalinists. Epton was a Vice-Chairman of PLM up until 1970 when he left, after the group stopped supporting 'ethnic nationalism' amongst black youth. Lieutenant Thomas Gilligan was off-duty when he shot James Powell, a teenaged student allegedly carrying a knife. He was later cleared of any wrongdoing by a Grand Jury. The poster depicts Gilligan in what is presumably his dress uniform with decorations.The police officer later cited this poster as a core element in a defamation suit against Martin Luther King, Contemporary newspaper accounts describe black people in Harlem and Bedford-Stuyvesant rioting, throwing Molotovs at the police, smashing cars and white shopkeepers' windows. At least one person died, over a hundred were injured and thousands arrested. The unrest spread throughout the USA and a state of emergency was declared in New York City. After the state of emergency was declared, Epton made at least one public speech, protest-marched and distributed insurrectionist literature that, as is implied with the poster, called for a reckoning with the NYPD. The posters were apparently pasted-up on walls and handed out widely across New York. A contemporary photograph for the New York World shows a group of African-American men striding down 125th Street near Seventh Avenue holding the posters before them like a premonition of Mao's Cultural Revolution a year later. Epton's First Amendments rights were essentially waived, using precedent, and he was later charged with conspiring to riot, advocating criminal anarchy and conspiring to engage in such advocacy and sentenced to three concurrent one year terms. At the time, the New York Court of Appeals quoted Epton as saying: ??They [the police] declared war on us and we should declare war on them and every time they kill one of us damn it, we'll kill one of them and we should start thinking that way right now. . . .?? (Paul Harris -Black Power Advocacy: Criminal Anarchy or Free Speech, p-710 California Law Review, 1968). His writ of certiorari was denied and the legal judgement that he was conspiring to overthrow the US Government was upheld. The evidence that Epton's speeches and opinions constituted a ?clear and present danger? to the function of government was obtained by use of an undercover agent who was ?.planted in the Harlem Progressive Labor Group The agent, wired with a 'minifon', taped a conversation in which Epton said the demonstration to protest police brutality would lead to violence? (ibid p214). He

In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Calder's Circus" was the miniature installation of whimsical wire figures created by American artist Alexander Calder during the twenties and thirties. Co-published by Calder's longtime New York gallerist Klaus Perls and "Art in America" magazine in conjunction with a 1964 exhibition of vintage circus-related works on paper held at Perls Galleries, "16 Circus Drawings" reproduces sixteen drawings from 1931 and 1932 as offset lithographs in black ink on heavy cream-colored paper housed in a decorative cloth portfolio. An internally handsome, well-preserved example of the exceedingly uncommon 1964 trade edition - issued unsigned and unnumbered - into which a lovely copy of the Perls Galleries announcement additionally BOLDLY SIGNED AND DATED "CA / dato 13 Oct 64" in blue ink by the artist for a member of the Perls staff at the opening has been laid in. The yellow portfolio interior is still bright with the three plastic clips designed to hold the plates in place complete and present, while the exterior cloth shows some wear, abrading, soiling, and traces of moisture. FeynmanRPF:bbIn this letter, Richard Feynman responds to a letter from a Harvard student who had written the CalTech professor after reading his Lectures on Physics-- a comprehensive, lecture-based textbook on physics that is still considered one of the foremost texts on the subject--to inform him of his "relatively rare endowment":"We found that I do have a muscular imbalance which caused my eyes to spontaneously diverge unless the stimulus of identical images forces the muscular control necessary to insure superposition of those images."The student's claim, which he clearly acknowledges is a direct challenge to Feynman's argument in his lecture "Mechanisms of Seeing", in which he writes:"It is impossible consciously or unconsciously to turn both eyes out at the same time, not because there are no muscles, but because there is no way to send a signal to turn both eyes out, unless we have had an accident or there is something the matter, for instance if a nerve has been cut. Although the muscles of one eye can certainly steer that eye about, not even a Yogi is able to move both eyes out freely under voluntary control, because there does not seem to be any way to do it. We are already wired to a certain extent."Despite his refutation of the lecture, Feynman--the irreverently cool, bongo-playing scientist--seems humored and excited by his letter, as he quips: "Evidently you are a genetically advantageous mutation, and we can guess now where the evolution of the human race is headed." Not only a brilliant lecturer and unparalleled computator, the physicist was a remarkably unique personality, a man who was famously "radical in his disrespect for authority, but conservative in his science" (Freeman Dyson).Aside from his iconoclastic and entertaining nature, Feynman was inarguably gifted. Tasked with having to work on the Manhattan Project (Feynman was the youngest group leader in the theoretical division of the program), his post-war work also received serious accolades. In 1965, he was co-awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his groundbreaking experiment on the varied phenomena at work in light, electricity, and radio. His foray into academia was fruitful as well; his numerous lectures at CalTech evolved into many books, including Lecture on Physics , Quantum Electrodynamics, and The Theory of Fundamental Processes . Bruno Cassinari (Piacenza 1912 - Milano 1992) è stato uno dei massimi esponenti della pittura italiana del Novecento. Dal 1926 al 1929 studia prima presso la scuola d'arte Gazzola di Piacenza, quindi a Milano, all'Umanitaria e alle scuole serali d'arte di Brera e del Castello. Nel 1934  è ammesso all'Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, dove si diploma sotto la guida di Aldo Carpi, maestro anche di Ennio Morlotti, artista con il quale Cassinari rimarrà legato da lunga e duratura amicizia. Nel 1940 aderisce al gruppo di Corrente assieme a Treccani, Morlotti, Guttuso, Birolli, Chighine, Ajmone, De Grada. Si reca a Parigi con i compagni Birolli, Morlotti, Morosini e lì conosce e apprezza le opere di Picasso. Nel 1948 espone alla XXIV  Biennale di Venezia, dopodiché alla Mostra Nazionale d'Arte "Premio città di Alessandria", dove vince il primo premio con "Nudo nella Cattedrale". Nel 1949 apre uno studio ad Antibes nei pressi del Museo Grimaldi. Qui fa la conoscenza di Braque, Chagall, Eluard e Cocteau. Da alora espone in numerosissime rassegne, collettive e personali, in Italia e nel mondo, fino alla grande antologica, organizzata nelle sale di Palazzo Farnese a Piacenza, nel 1983.

Adventure no. 2: A near fine book (one small nick to the bottom of the spine) in near fine clipped wrapper with some wear to the tail of the spine and some wear to extremities. - Adventure no. 3: A very good book without inscriptions, with some light handling marks to the copyright page. A little staining to the top of the front board and some light spotting in a very good unclipped wrapper with some wear to the spine tips (and some loss to the head of the spine) and to corners. Some staining and spotting to the front and internally. A very pleasing set and now housed in a custom-made slipcase.

        GROPE - Vol One No One, Jan 1964

      New York: Tibor de Nagy Editions, 1964. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. 4to. Stapled pictorial wraps. Some faint soil to front wrapper. Mild toning overall. Very good. One of 500 unnumbered copies. A scarce and important publication which apparently ran just one issue. Forakis, Yampolsky, and Fleming (all artist's better known for other mediums) each contribute one work or "story" utilizing the conventions of the comic (panels, word balloons, etc.), but all non-narrative and veering towards the completely abstract, psychedelic and/or nonsensical. The motifs and styles clearly prefigure the work of later underground comic artists, and this is easily among the earliest we've seen to exhibit a non-commercial, "underground" aesthetic (albeit mixed with a fine art influence). Indeed, this publication predates by at least several months what is generally considered the first underground comic: Jack Jackson's GOD NOSE (which though printed the same year was clearly published sometime after January). And though the three pieces in GROPE don't quite demonstrate the over-the-top subversive quality one typically associates with the underground, all three clearly exhibit a prescient style that would soon come to fuller fruition in R. Crumb and others. Curiously, published by Tibor de Nagy, who had previously done nothing quite like this. OCLC shows just 12 holdings.
