        Okinawa Photo Album

[N.p.: n.p., 1964-65]. Photographs in uniformly nice condition, internally near fine, album is edgeworn with splits at the plastic covering the spiral binding, else very good in illustrated boards.. Unique photo album from the Vietnam War era, dating between 1964 and 1965, housed in an illustrated Okinawa album. Includes 105 mostly black-and-white prints, measuring approximately 5 1/2 X 2 1/2 inches. Images depict a group of young recruits stationed at a field camp in Okinawa, Japan, with a combination of both staged and candid shots. An intimate portrait of American soldier life, the album features photos of GI's engaging in horseplay, posing with firearms, and training in the surrounding region of Okinawa. Photographs are adhered to the pages and protected by clear mylar sheets. Arresting document of solider camaraderie, at times bordering on the homoerotic; images with soldiers pointing guns at each other are particularly chilling and evocative.

Typed Letter, Signed, on Ansel Adams Stationery

Ansel Adams, typed letter signed on Ansel Adams stationery (Carmel California). Dated May 6, 1964. This letter is addressed "Dear Dr. Davenport, " and continues to explain that he has just returned from a trip, hence "tardiness in replying to your letter of the 27th and commenting upon the prints." After other comments on the presentation, he offers critiques on 13 individually numbered images from a 2-Volume portfolio of images submitted by Davenport. Also present with the letter is a portion of one volume of the portfolio, with 5 images remaining in it. Cursory examination suggests that this is Vol 1 of the two. The letter signs off, "Keep it up - send more stuff whenever you can! all best" (signed in pen) Ansel Adams. All in very good conditoin. This letter has remarkable content and illustrates Adams's "teaching" mode. Charles K. Davenport was a medical doctor in California, working his way through medical school by selling his photos. He was a student of Ansel Adams and they subsequently became close friends. County. During his school years, Davenport sold photographs at banks, business offices, and other venues to help support his studies. He was a student of Ansel Adams in the 1960s, and they remained lifetime friends. Davenport's landscapes and still lifes were exhibited in the former medical society in Colton, and in San Bernardino County Museum, UC Riverside, and many other venues in California and later, in Oregon. His images appeared on magazine covers, calendars, and in books and an encyclopedia. Davenport passed away in Springfield, Oregon in 2007.         [Original Black and White Photograph of Andy Warhol, Ted Berrigan's Copy]

[New York]: Lorenz Gude, [ca. 1964]. First Edition. Original silver gelatin print. 8" x 10". Near fine. Inscribed in two different inks to verso in poet Ted Berrigan's hand: "Andy Warhol in The Factory, working on Brillo Boxes - Photo by Lorenz Gude." And further below, also in Berrigan's hand: "to Be [sic] returned [arrow pointing down] From the Collection of Ted Berrigan." An unknown hand has added a few other penned annotations, seemingly for publication ("top," "pic 3 / 4sc bleed," and "R.91%"), though we find no evidence this photo ever appeared in print. A disarmingly intimate and delicate portrait of Andy Warhol by Lorenz Gude, capturing the artist in close-up, wearing glasses and a tattered sweatshirt, and gazing to one side out-of-frame. As noted, Ted Berrigan's copy. Berrigan and Gude co-published the landmark mimeo "C," which featured a Warhol-designed cover for their 1963 fourth issue, one of the earliest Warhol silkscreened portraits. As described in Reva Wolf's book ANDY WARHOL: Poetry, and Gossip in the 1960's, Warhol courted Berrigan (as well as others in the literary scene) and the poet circled the edges of the Factory scene throughout the early to mid sixties. Indeed, Warhol conducted a screen test with Berrigan (ST22) in 1965. Warhol exhibited his Brillo boxes at the Stable Gallery in 1964 and they were immediately controversial and, like his soup cans, iconic. A significant association, capturing the artist at a key moment in his early career and in a particularly vulnerable moment.

Cleveland Public Library, John G White Department: Catalog of the Chess Collection (Including Checkers)

G K Hall & Co, Boston 1964 - 2 volumes: [iv]+613 pages; [iv]+578 pages. Folio (14 1/4" x10 1/4") bound in original red gilt lettering to spine. Introduction by George J Maciuszko. (Betts: 1-58) First edition. This catalog consists of some 15,000 items from the chess and checker section of the John G White Collection housed in the Cleveland Public Library. The catalog entries from the card catalog have been photographically reproduced (size reduced) with 21 entries to each page in three columns of seven. In the author portion, titles are further arranged chronologically by date of publication. The titles in the subject part are classified by a local extension of the Decimal Classification. Cataloging practice appears to conform largely to the Dewey Decimal code, with some divergence of practice over the years. Some annotation of the bibliographical nature is given where relevant. The collection originated as the personal library of John Griswold White, a noted Cleveland attorney, who served many years as President and member of the Cleveland Public Library's Board of Trustees. White was an outstanding benefactor of the Library. His gifts to the Collection that was to bear his name began in the 1880's and continued to his death in 1928. "The largest chess library in the world," wrote the famous chess historian Harold J R Murray about this collection in his work in 1914. Hundreds of titles have been added since that time, including many of the choicest volumes from the library of J W Rimington Wilson, a British collector whose fine chess library was broken up after his death in 1927. Condition: Some light rubbing to the extremities else a very good set. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Gloucester, MA. Undated [but post November 1964].. Six pages. In ink, on rectos only, of six sheets of octavo letterhead of "The Tavern." Folded for mailing, paperclip rust mark in upper margin (chiefly first and last leaves), very good. To friend and fellow writer, Paul Metcalf. A remarkable letter of condolence to Metcalf upon the death of his father, Harry: "I just, because a man asked me, was reading Letter to Melville, 1951 - and stopped with the name Harry, proud that I had put your father's name there, beside your Mother's, and decided to write you immediately to console you and Nancy because Harry has died. Henry K. Metcalf. Isn't it really a nice thing he was, and I hope the fact that he did live so that we all felt he was clearly himself...that your own feelings, both of you, may be that he simply did live out his term of life (as those words really do say it, though I never myself - and I imagine others of us (?) - didn't know these words do cover the meanness, that our lives do have to end), and that this will lessen for you that you don't have a father in the world any more." Olson continues on, at length, in the same vein, with vivid recollection and from the heart, of the impression Harry Metcalf left upon him. Then, either in a moment of forgetfulness, or because he had not heard, Olson asks that Paul extend his sympathies to his Mother, who had predeceased Harry by over six months: "...please extend them to your Mother for me (feeling as [I] do, that ever since that poem I was just reading, she hasn't wanted any more to feel my nature. Or amount of it. Or the way, in such an instance, it did - I think - enrage [?] her. (I certainly was hoping that the other way about might have been the way she would have taken it. In any case I was happy when I published it in book form, that I had the sense to remove her name, from the address. I should have done that in the first place...[)]." He continues on with concerns for Paul, his wife and family: "...[I] hope all aspects of your to all your liking, so much as anything can be, for any of us - and alas when the flowering aloes (to use your great grandfather's rhyme!) fall upon us." Olson met Eleanor Metcalf (1882- April 1964), Herman Melville's granddaughter and literary executor/editor, and her husband Harry, during the 1930s, when he was actively engaged in his "Melville Project" -- the tracking down and transcription of Melville's marginalia. As custodian of much of the Melville family heritage, Eleanor was foremost among his important contacts for that undertaking, and Olson earned what Tom Clark describes in his biography of Olson as "unqualified acceptance into this good woman's...household, where he was welcomed as a sort of surrogate family member...given a standing dinner invitation, a bed to sleep in whenever he was in Cambridge, and, most usefully of all, a direct pipeline to the Melville family papers" (p.24). In turn, Olson's significance for Paul Metcalf and his own writing was considerable. Olson closes the letter: "Love & life to you both, and to your daughter (and, by your permission and means, to your Mother), Charles." Ca. 6- 700 words.

Atlas Narodov Mira (Atlas of the Peoples of the World)

Moscow. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1964. First Edition. Hardcover. Very nice clean tight copy apart from neat inscription to f.e.p.. Brown 'Soviet' cloth, title in gilt to upper board. 112 pages of coloured maps, 184pp.. ; "This first comprehensive atlas of the world’s languages and peoples has 60 excellently drafted, multi-colored ethnic maps, and 11 showing population density. The text discusses construction of population maps, and specific questions arising from mapping racial, language, religious, and nationality groups. It is not an “ethnographic atlas” in the sense of showing only premodern tribal distributions, to the exclusion of populations of recent colonial or immigrant origin. Even so the atlas locates 1,600 ethnic groups as of 1961, which when corrected for groups present in more than one country, are reduced to 910. Soviet scholars have been much concerned with ethnogenesis, and this atlas poses many such questions sharply. The compilers were fully aware of inconsistencies and ambiguities likely to be encountered in attempting to classify and then map the world’s peoples". Gordon W. Hughes. "The Atlas Narodov Mira has been used extensively to investigate the effects of ethnic divisions, but little is known about how it defines ethnicity. Most theories of ethnicity emphasize the tendency of group members to marry within the group (endogamy). This note surveys studies of ethnic intermarriage to evaluate whether the groups in the Atlas: (1) are endogamous and (2) have no endogamous subgroups. I find that the groups are generally endogamous but there are a number of cases of groups with endogamous subgroups. Therefore, the data tend to underestimate ethnic divisions".
