        The Luce-Donovan Dinner, May 25, 1964

[New York: Time, Inc.], 1964 [New York: Time, Inc.], 1964. (TIME, INC) 8vo. Hedley Donovan's own copy of Time's compilation of the remarks made by various individuals on the celebration of his appointment as editor-in-chief of all Time Inc. Publications. Illustrated with photographs and photo-montage endpapers. Original red glazed calf, gilt rule on upper cover, "Hedley Donovan" stamped in gilt at lower right corner; fine. Provenance: Estate oif Hedley Donovan . On April 16, 1964, the Time, Inc. Board of Directors, "acting on the suggestion of Henry R. Luce" named Hedley Donovan to its top position, editor-in-chief. Luce, Time co-founder and for 20 years editor-in-chief, was appointed editorial chairman, and at the New York Hilton on May 25 a dinner was held to honor the two men at which Luce, Donvan, and other Time Inc. executives spoke. This is a beautifully produced record of their remarks, including these by Donovan: "This [piece] appeared in the newspaper of Jefferson High School in Minneapolis, a publication that I'm afraid some of you don't follow as closely as you might: 'Hedley Donovan was selected home room reporter by his class for the Jeffersonian the first year that Mr. McRae sponsored it. Because of his fine contribution the first semester he was selected as assistant editor the second semester. Just recently Mr. Donovan was named Editor-in-Chief of Time-Life corporation'. End of item". (The headline of the article was "Reporter Steps Up"). The most desirable copy of a splendid icon of American journalism

        The Dance Sequences

Fort Worth, TX: Grouper Press, 1964. Fort Worth, TX: Grouper Press, 1964. Douthit, Peter; DiJulio, Charles. The Dance Sequences. Poetry: Peter Douthit [aka Peter Rabbit], Serigraphs Charles DiJulio. Fort Worth, TX: Grouper Press, 1964. Large Folio (18 2 x 24 1/2"). 8 loose sheets as issued with colored prints and original poetry, each signed by author and artist. Original wrappers (soiled). An edition of 50 copies (this is no. 34). OCLC: No locations. These very early prints by DiJulio but show an interest in bold colors schemes that he continues to use, although he has come to prefer patterns over known objects. Charles DiJulio (1941-2013) was born in Philadelphia and raised in Upper Darby before moving to Fort Worth Texas. He attended Texas Christian University and received a BFA and then transferred to the University of Colorado Boulder in 1964 where he tried his hand at experimental filmmaking. He eventually received a Masters in Fine Art in 1976. In 1966, DiJulio travelled to "Drop City," an artist commune located in Trinidad, Colorado, and was heavily influenced by the avant-garde work of its residents. He moved back to Boulder after just a few months and with the original creators of Drop City, co-founded a new collective known as "Criss-Cross." These artists emphasized abstract "patternized painting" in a modernized style. The group began exhibiting their work in 1974 and continues to hold periodic showings to this day. DiJulio taught art and film at several schools, produced a host of experimental 16mm films, and acted as the co-editor of Criss-Cross Art Communications. Peter Douthit (1936-2012), also known as Peter Rabbit, was a poet and early resident of Drop City. Born in Bradford, Pennsylvania and raised for a time in Owensboro, Kentucky, he traveled to New York City at the age of 17. He later studied under Charles Olson and futurist Buckminster Fuller at Black Mountain College in North Carolina before moving to Taos, New Mexico where he met authors and poets like Richard Duerden and Robert Creeley. He wandered the Southern United States working odd jobs until the 1960s when he moved to Colorado and became one of Drop City's earliest members. Here, he was dubbed "Peter Rabbit" based on his ability to hunt and provide meat for the small community. When the commune dissolved in the late 1960s, Douthit and two other artists founded another commune, called "Libre" in Farisita, Colorado. In 1971, he wrote a history of the original experimental commune titled simply Drop City. In the early 1980s, Douthit and his partner Anne MacNaughton founded the Poetry Circus, based in Taos, and began its annual tradition of the World Heavyweight Championship Poetry Bout, a "mock prizefight" between two opposing poets, complete with "a referee, judges and ring girls." The circus attracted many well-known poets, such as Ed Sanders, Jim Carroll, Allen Ginsberg, and Anne Waldman. The success of the organization and its annual competitions allowed Douthit to be remembered as the "Don King of poetry," just as he wished.         The Bell Jar

Heinemann - B0000EEV3X 2nd edition from William Heinemann, London, 1964. Hardcover with Good Dust Jacket under mylar. Minor blemishes on DJ, as well as minor rubbing and bumping to corners and edges of book and DJ. General wear is not out of the ordinary, and this specimen is a solid copy of a book which proves to be increasingly hard to find. ~Good. Light to moderate shelf wear to covers/corners; satisfaction guaranteed. The Bell Jar is American writer and poet Sylvia Plath's only novel, originally published under the pseudonym "Victoria Lucas" in 1963. The novel is semi-autobiographical, with the names of places and people changed. The book is often regarded as a roman à clef since the protagonist's descent into mental illness parallels Plath's own experiences with what may have been clinical depression. Plath committed suicide a month after its first UK publication. The novel was published under Plath's name for the first time in 1967 and was not published in the United States until 1971, pursuant to the wishes of Plath's mother and her husband Ted Hughes. The novel has been translated into nearly a dozen languages. This edition was produced under Heinemann's 'Contemporary Fiction' label for members of the Readers Union group of book clubs. It was an optional selection rather than an automatic mailing and accordingly only a limited number seems to have been issued. Other than the first edition of the previous year this is the only printing under Plath's pen-name of 'Victoria Lucas' adopted by her as protection against her mother's reaction to an unsympathetic portrayal.       Wien. 1964.. Originalradierung. 38 x 50 cm. Blattgröße.. Wotruba, Fritz, * 23. 4. 1907 Wien, 28. 8. 1975 ebenda, einer der bedeutendsten Bildhauer des 20. Jahrhunderts.

        Eugene Onegin

New York: Bollingen Series, Pantheon Books, 1964. New York: Bollingen Series, Pantheon Books,, 1964. A Novel in Verse Translated from the Russian, with a Commentary, by Vladimir Nabakov. 4 volumes, octavo. Original light blue cloth, titles to spines gilt on red ground. With the dust jackets. Housed in publisher's card slipcase. Spines a little faded, very light browning to endpapers. A fine set in price-clipped jackets with mildly tanned spines; small nick to rear panel of Volume II jacket. First edition, first printing of what Nabokov considered to be one of the greatest novels of all time. 'Arising out of the needs of his Russian literature students and serving also as a means of establishing his academic credentials', Nabokov spent most of the 1950s translating and annotating his English version (Boyd, in Nabokov's Butterflies, p.13). The source text used was the 1837 edition, which was the last one to be published in Pushkin's lifetime. A magnificent piece of scholarship and a terrific homage to Pushkin. With photograph of Nabokov, cut from a newspaper, and a partial magazine article on butterflies loosely inserted in Volume I.
