Houghton Mifflin Company (1964), Boston - Fourth Printing. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the subject on the front endpaper: "To all my friends/the Lawrence Kleins/from their friend/Lyndon B Johnson." Books genuinely signed by LBJ are quite scarce, this one most especially. I have personally examined more than 50 "signed" copies of this title, and ALL were secretarially signed "with best wishes." The book seems to have been given to various donors and VIPs with this secretarial signature. This particular copy has a more personal inscription. At first thought, one would expect Klein to be the Nobel Prize economist who was one of Jimmy Carter's chief economic advisers; however, he is much more likely the foreman who was in charge of the complete renovation of the Johnson Texas ranch and who attended the same Junction School as LBJ. Slightly cocked. Very Good or better in a price-clipped, Very Good dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

      - An undated early holograph version of Saul Bellow's only full-length play contained in a ledger-type notebook (8-1/4" x 11-3/8") with marbled paper boards and a black cloth spine. Bellow has subtitled this as "A Work in Progress." Acts I and II of this version are complete in 71 pages with 4 pages of preliminary material for an Act III, all handwritten by Bellow. The 1964 staged version was reduced to two acts. Bellow appears to have written out Acts I & II as a fair copy from previous versions and notes in preparation for completing the play with a new Act III. There are relatively few insertions and corrections in his text of the first two acts which take up about 75% of the notebook. The third act consists mostly of blank pages with 3 pages of rough notes and key speeches including what seem to be the climactic lines of his main character, the comedian Bummidge, who has been undergoing an obsessive self-analysis in the previous acts: "The world was never real for me. But now I see it's more real than I was. I never admitted that it existed. It always knew I was here (he goes around picking up objects & kissing them because they're real). Now what is the theory. Not Momma's womb but my own empty heart?" Laid in to the notebook is a SIGNED typed 12-page fragment of an earlier version of the play, with Bellow's original title, THE CRASH PROGRAM, crossed out in ink and his new title, THE LAST ANALYSIS, written over it. Bellow manuscripts of this size and importance are seldom offered with most already housed in institutional collections. Near Fine and quite exceptional [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

In 1935 she won the Academy Award for her powerful portrayal of the aging alcoholic star in Dangerous (1935). Other notable films of the 1930s were The Petrified Forest (1936), Jezebel (1938), for which she won her second Academy Award, Dark Victory (1939), and The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex (1939). Throughout this period, Davis waged bitter court battles to break her contract with Warner Brothers Studio, which had refused to relinquish control over her screen material and to consistently give her the excellent roles that she coveted. From the library of Professor George M Foster. 1st editions. This is an attempt at a definitive encyclopaedia of the environment, archaeology, ethnology, social anthropology, ethnohistory, linguistics and physical anthropology of the native peoples of Mexico and Central America. The Handbook was assembled at the Middle American Research Institute of Tulane University with the aid of grants from the National Science Foundation. George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in. Condition: All volumes have Foster's stamp on front end paper, except the supplements 2 through 6 which are as new. An occasional word underlined by Foster in the texts. Jacket spines sunned.         "FARNHAM'S FREEHOLD" [novel]. TYPED MANUSCRIPT, SIGNED (TMsS), the first third of the novel , first carbon copy

Pages soiled by compositor's dirty fingers, some offset and smearing. of carbon but perfectly legible, some edge nicks and faint creases,. old stab marks in upper edges of some leaves, but overall in very. good condition. (#103460). The setting copy, extensively copy-edited and marked up for the printer. 205 leaves, doubled-spaced, typed on rectos only, plus ribbon-copy cover sheet with story blurb. The novel was published as a three-part serial by IF magazine in the July, August and October 1964 issues before its book publication later that year by G. P. Putnam's Sons. This is the magazine setting copy for the first installment. It is signed in blue ball point ink on the first page by Heinlein and the magazine's cover sheet is marked "July IF" in blue ink, presumably in Heinlein's hand. The manuscript has numerous handwritten editorial changes in pencil and red ink (most likely by Frederik Pohl), mostly excisions and, less frequently, brief insertions of text, as well as instructions for the printer. The editor has cut over 60 separate passages, ranging from a line to a page; about 5-10% of the text. The present manuscript thus preserves a significantly different version of Heinlein's text. The novel was written during the fall of 1962, with the Cuban Missile Crisis in the background, and was originally called GRAND SLAM. Heinlein biographer William Patterson writes, "GRAND SLAM was a very uncharacteristically pessimistic book, with the protagonist tossed from situation to situation and having no control over his own destiny. It was written at astonishing speed -- 25 days for a 500 page typescript (about 150,000 words, or nearly 6,000 words per day) -- probably the only way Heinlein could have sustained the dark mood". This work has been described as a "long and opinionated novel of ideas, invokes rather unpleasantly a Black despotism in the USA of the far future - and begins to fully articulate a theme that obsessed the late RAH: the notion of the family as utterly central" (Clute and Nicholls [eds], The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction [1993], p. 556).

        Conversations avec Picasso

NRF Gallimard, Paris 1964 - Octavo. 334pp. Original printed wrappers with red and black lettering on front cover. Book in a 2/3 red leather modern custom made clamshell over tan cloth with raised bands and gold lettering on spine. First trade edition of Brassaï’s intimate account of his experiences with Picasso. Brassaï (the pseudonym for Gyula Halasz) originally trained to be an artist, but after arriving in Paris in 1923, he instead turned to journalism. His artistic yet hauntingly candid works of photojournalism of Paris nightlife won him international acclaim in the 1930s. During the German occupation, Brassaï worked in Picasso’s studio, and used Picasso as the subject of numerous post-War photographs, many of which are presented in this book. Picasso said of "Conversations," "Read this book if you want to understand me." According to Brassaï, who has been described by Henry Miller as "a living eye," the ideal photographer is "an implacable spectator, an impartial witness and a faithful chronicler," but also someone with a "sense of the magic beneath the surface of reality" (Roth, 76). Brassaï brings these observational skills to bear in his account of his interactions with Picasso. Brassaï's lifelong friendship with Picasso resulted in several photographic books, notably "Les Sculptures de Picasso" (1948) and this "Conversations avec Picasso" (1964). Age-toning and slight foxing on covers. Text in French. Clamshell in overall near to fine, wrappers in good+, interior in near fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
