Americans on Everest. The official account of the ascent led by Norman G. Dyhrenfurth.

Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Company, 1964.. 24 cm x 16 cm. XXI, 429 pages. Original Hardcover with dustjacket. With several black-and-white pictures. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Jacket slightly torn. In protective mylar. Signed and inscribed by 4 members of the expedition.. James Ramsey Ullman (1907 - July 5, 1971) was an American writer and mountaineer. He was born in New York. He was not a high end climber, but his writing made him an honorary member of that circle. The books he wrote were mostly about mountaineering and geography. His works include Banner in the Sky, which was a book based on the true story of the first climbing of the Matterhorn (it was filmed in Switzerland as Third Man on the Mountain), and The White Tower (which would star Glenn Ford and Lloyd Bridges). Also Americans on Everest by James Ramsay Ullman, page 195, published by J. B. Lippincott Company 1964, Library of Congress Catalogue #64-14475. He was the ghost writer for Tenzing Norgay's autobiography Man of Everest (originally published as Tiger of the Snows). High Conquest was the first of nine books for the J.B. Lippincott company coming out in 1941 followed by The White Tower, River of The Sun, Windom's Way, and Banner in the Sky which was a 1955 Newbery Honor book. All of these titles became small motion pictures. He also wrote the short story "Top Man", a story about mountaineers climbing K3, a mountain in India. The story appears in several anthologies. It was originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1940. Issue #35. Beyond his mountaineering books, he wrote "Where the Bong Tree Grows," an account of a year he spent traveling through some of the most remote islands of the South Pacific. Ullman also wrote a novel about the poet Arthur Rimbaud, The Day on Fire (1958). He joined the American Mount Everest Expedition 1963 as official historian. Because of health problems he had to stay in Kathmandu. His book Americans on Everest: The Official Account of the Ascent was published in 1964. He died in Boston from cancer on July 5, 1971.         Doktor Zhivago. Flegon Edition (in Russian)

London: Flegon Press. Very Good. 1964. Reprint. Paperback. Appears to be first Flegon edition: "B Pasternak Doktor Zhivago" in Russian lettered red to white covers 11x17cm., 634[vi]pp.. First page is half-title with Boris Pasternak in Russian. Fake Zemlia i Fabrika stamp to title page and colophon to last page with fake printing details, 4 b/w reproduced illustrations of Pasternak after title. Very bright and clean, small remains of price-sticker to upper cover, small mark just inside. ; Published by the 'irreverent and irrepressible' emigré from Romania, Flegon. Of his 4 editions of Dr Zhivago, this one came out as a Moscow imprint using the colophon and mark of the long-defunct Soviet ZiF or 'Zemlia i Fabrika'. The idea was to smuggle copies to the Soviet Union where would-be buyers could not be accused of purchasing anti-Soviet literature. See Mancosu for the very interesting history of this Flegon edition: "Inside the Zhivago Storm". Flegon also published Bulgakov and Solzhenitsyn. ; 634 pages .

        Quotations from Chairman Mao].

Central Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, Beijing 1964 - [Quotations from Chairman Mao]. Peking: Central Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, [May 1964]. 16mo (x mm). [8], 2, 2, 250 pp., including half-title printed in red, title-page printed in red and green, portrait of Chairman Mao printed in sepia, uncorrected calligraphic endorsement leaf of Lin Biao printed in black, and table of contents. Original printed paper wrappers printed in red and black. Protective vintage paper dustjacket pasted on top to the binding titled in Chinese script on front (Quotations from Chairman Mao). Provenance: Training school of Kunming (half-title annotated in Chinese). First and last blanks soiled a bit, otherwise clean and crisp. A fine copy of the rare first printing of the first edition. Created for use by the People's Liberation Army as a pocket handbook of inspirational reading, the book contains short segments taken from Mao's speeches and published writings for use in study groups as lessons for discussion amongst the soldiers. Demand for additional copies within the army required the book to get reprinted several times in 1965 (2nd edition March enlarged to 32 chapters, 3rd edition August with final 33rd chapter added). It is the second most frequently printed book in history, after the Bible, with an estimated five-billion copies produced in more than 100 languages in the past forty-five years. Early printings include a one-page facsimile of Lin's calligraphic endorsement for everyone to study Chairman Mao's writings, but following accusations of Lin's unsuccessful plot to assassinate Mao in September 1971, the government required this page to be torn out in an effort to eradicate Lin's name from modern history. Subsequent copies printed after 1971 no longer include any mention of Lin and most earlier copies that do survive have this page removed. The first printing is slightly taller than all later editions and includes an error found in the earliest form of Lin's calligraphic facsimile endorsement, where a superfluous brush stroke occurred in the 2nd vertical line from the right, 2nd character from the top. It is generally accepted that all copies comprising only thirty chapters and with text ending at page 250 are first editions. The more famous issue in red vinyl cover was simultaneously printed with those in first paper wrappers, but the vinyl took longer to produce and was thus release shortly after. Paper wrapper copies were intended for Army officers whereas those in red vinyl were produced to be shared by brigades of up to eight soldiers. (Schiller, Quotations from Chairman Mao. A short bibliographical Study, the Grolier Club, New York, 2014). Some copies contain textual errors in the final line of p.82 and the first line of p.83. As sheets for the Quotations were printed at several locations throughout China to facilitate faster distribution, no place of publication is stated; and no priority can be established for copies in which the misprints occur and those in which they do not. (Han, Sources and Early Printing History of Chairman Mao's 'Quotations,' Antiquarian Book Review, November 2003). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

DREAMTIGERS - SIGNED, WITH PROMOTIONAL EVENT PAMPHLET

Austin: University of Texas Press, 1964. First Edition. New. First Printing. About Fine in a Near Fine jacket, with the original price of $4.00 intact. The dust jacket shows some of the usual spine toning to the red on the spine, has a discreet 1" closed tear at the upper left front panel, and shows some minute rubbing along the top edge of the spine and along the front flap fold. A collection of poems, stories, sketches, and apocryphal quotations originally translated from "El Hacedor" (The Maker). This copy has been signed in blue ink by Borges on the second preliminary page. Included is a brochure from the original lecture event on February 8, 1968 at Carnegie Lecture Hall - an important ephemeral item which nicely ties the signature to a specific venue. An uncommon collection, particularly signed.

Nobel Lectures: Physiology or Medicine 1942-1962.

Elsevier Publishing Company, Amsterdam 1964 - First edition. Thick Octavo, original yellow cloth. Signed by Nobel Laureates Francis Crick and James D. Watson at their Nobel Lecture. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with some closed tears. An exceptional piece signed by these Nobel Prize-winning scientists. In the early 1950s, the race to discover DNA was on. At Cambridge University, graduate student Francis Crick and research fellow James Watson had become interested, impressed especially by Pauling's work. Meanwhile at King's College in London, Maurice Wilkins (b. 1916) and Rosalind Franklin were also studying DNA. The Cambridge team's approach was to make physical models to narrow down the possibilities and eventually create an accurate picture of the molecule. The King's team took an experimental approach, looking particularly at x-ray diffraction images of DNA. Watson and Crick took a crucial conceptual step, suggesting the molecule was made of two chains of nucleotides, each in a helix as Franklin had found, but one going up and the other going down. Crick had just learned of Chargaff's findings about base pairs in the summer of 1952. He added that to the model, so that matching base pairs interlocked in the middle of the double helix to keep the distance between the chains constant. Watson and Crick showed that each strand of the DNA molecule was a template for the other. During cell division the two strands separate and on each strand a new "other half" is built, just like the one before. This way DNA can reproduce itself without changing its structure -- except for occasional errors, or mutations. The structure so perfectly fit the experimental data that it was almost immediately accepted. DNA's discovery has been called the most important biological work of the last 100 years, and the field it opened may be the scientific frontier for the next 100.         The Hustler' Film Poster

Twentieth Century Fox 1964 - A poster advertising the film 'The Hustler' starring Paul Newman. It is dated 1964, so I think it is for the film's re-issue in that year. It carries the references 64-897 and R64-173. Presumably the '64's refer to 1964. It measures 41" x 27". It has been mounted on linen and is in excellent condition, all the colours are vibrant and the image is sharp. It has not been folded. The whole poster is slightly wavy, i.e. it doesn't lie quite flat, and the back of the linen has what look like some damp spots / marks. Some of the white and green areas are a touch browned. As to its provenance, there is a sticker on the back of the frame that it came in for the Cine Art Gallery, Fulham Road, London. The Hustler was the 1961 Twentieth Century Fox film that turned Paul Newman into an overnight superstar. He played 'Fast' Eddie Felson, a pool player, who hustled his way across America to New York where he challenged the unbeatable Minnesota Fats and fell for the alcoholic Sarah Packard. The film won the Oscar for Best Black and White Cinematography. Newman reprieved his role in 'The Color Of Money' in the 1980s which delivered him his first Oscar. An iconic poster! UK shipping will be with myHermes unframed & rolled in a stout tube. Overseas shipping will probably be more than the Abe default rate, so please contact me for a quote before ordering.

AMERICAN WOOD TYPE / AMERICAN WOOD TYPES 1828-1900. VOLUME ONE. COLLECTED, CATALOGUED AND PRINTED BY ROB ROY KELLY

Kansas City, Missouri: Rob Roy Kelly, 1964. Text by Rob Roy Kelly and editing by Georgia O'Connor. Part of the text was previously published in Design Quarterly 56, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, Minnesota. Oversized: approx 58 cm x 44.5 cm. Consists of one (detached) leaf of orange paper (imprinted with large pointing hands and an arrow), seven leaves of buff paper, including a blank leaf, and three leaves of heavy white paper printed recto only with wood type alphabets, these sheets bearing the numbers 56, 29 and 46. The buff pages consist of an introduction, which refers to a limited signed edition of 45 copies that contained many more plates, plus six pages of alphabets and an illustration of 19th century printing presses. The only copy I was able to locate is at the University of Kentucky at Lexington, whose catalogue listing considers this "an overage of the introductory matter which accompanied the portfolio of this title". Their copy has plates numbered 38,30 and 33. With the exception of the detached orange leaf, about fine in a black plastic comb binding that is missing a link at the center. Oversized: extra postage and insurance will be required.

Her first novel, published in 1936, We The Living, sold poorly in America, but the Russian-born Rand achieved success with the publication of her 1943 novel, The Fountainhead. Anthem was written during a break from the writing of The Fountainhead, presenting a vision of a dystopian future world in which totalitarian collectivism has triumphed to such an extent that even the word 'I' has been forgotten and replaced with 'we.' It was published in England in 1938, but Rand initially could not find an American publisher. As with We the Living, Rand's later success allowed her to get a revised version published in 1946, which has sold more than 3.5 million copies. In 1957, she published her best-known work, the novel Atlas Shrugged. Afterward, she turned to non-fiction to promote her philosophy, publishing her own magazines and releasing several collections of essays until her death in 1982. Rand advocated reason as the only means of acquiring knowledge and rejected faith and religion. She supported rational and ethical egoism, and rejected altruism.         You Only Live Twice (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1964, 1964. FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE, BINDING A. Pp.256. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards with silver titles to spine and Japanese characters in gilt to upper, bamboo patterned endpapers, in original pictorial dustwrapper by Richard Chopping. With 'First Published 1964' on the copyright page. Some wear, edges toned, spine leaning, jacket with a few short tears and some abrasion; very good. This copy features one of the earliest jackets, entirely untrimmed and with extra wide jacket flaps, printed on the heavier stock. Such jackets are considered FINAL PROOF STATE, used to check the look and spacing of text etc. before printing began in earnest. The subsequent jackets had slimmer flaps with an angled corner cut, and were printed on regular dust-jacket stock. A rare variant, housed in an attractive quarter leather box. A12a (1.1).

        CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. First edition. Joseph Schindelman. Octavo, 161pp., with profuse b/w drawings by Joseph Schindelman. The true first edition (the English edition was not published until 1967), first issue, with six lines of printing information on the last page, a price of $3.95 on the dustjacket, mustard yellow endpapers, and no ISBN on the rear dustjacket panel. As called for in the first edition, the Oompa-Loompas are black and African, not orange or white. Just about fine, with no names, inscriptions, soil, etc., bound in burgundy cloth with the title medallion stamped in blind on the front panel and the spine title in gilt, with a possible faint hint of fingermarks on the rear panel near the outer margin. The dustjacket is complete and without tears or nicks, though there is a small triangular crease at the top of the front dustjacket flap. However, the jacket shows soil and foxing on both front and back, and its present "as-found" condition could -- and should -- be upgraded by a specialist in dustjacket restoration.
