[Quotations from Chairman Mao or the Little Red Book]

General Political Department of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, 1964. First edition. Portrait frontispiece. [iv], 250 pp. 12mo. Original printed wrappers, slightly soiled, but a very good copy. First edition. Portrait frontispiece. [iv], 250 pp. 12mo. THE FIRST EDITION. 720 million copies of Mao's Little Red Book were printed over a four year period beginning in 1964, only the Bible has a larger print run. The first edition was published in wrappers rather than the famous red vinyl covers and is distinguished by its size - five inches tall which was later reduced to four - and has thirty rather than the thirty-three chapters of later editions. "Its idea was originally conceived by Lin Bao (1907-71) as a book of inspirational reading... For several years Lin promoted a campaign that everyone should study Chairman Mao's thoughts, and the PLA [People's Liberation Army] newspaper printed daily extracts from his selected texts that often formed topics for evening discussion groups" (Schiller). There were several proto-type versions issued in small numbers before this edition went to press with a preface dated May, 1964. Schiller, J; Quotations of Chairman Mao, Grolier Club, 2014, p3

        Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

New York: Knopf, 1964. First edition, first issue, with the six line colophon on the last page. Octavo, original red cloth. Boldly signed by Roald Dahl on the front free endpaper. Fine in an excellent dust jacket that shows some light wear to the foot of the spine and to the extremities. One of the most enduring post war children's books and a timeless classic. "Charlie earned for its author a cult following among child readers Dahl has been called a literary genius; his books have been considered modern fairy tales" (Silvey, 186). "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is already a great classic work [and] one of the most enduring post-war children's books Dahl is undeniably special" (Connolly, 102).

What Manner of Man: A Biography Of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Chicago: Johnson Publishing Company, Inc, 1964. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To Officer Harry Soctt With best wishes and great appreciation for your support Martin Luther King Jr." Light wear to the extremities and previous owner's name, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. This is the first example we have seen signed by Dr. King. Rare. Bennett has managed to "get inside Dr. King's skin" and walk around in his mind for awhile, thinking, feeling, hurting, and trembling from the heights as he looks down to see from here the man has come. He is able to relate with eloquence, thoroughness, force and passion of Martin Luther King Jr., a modern day Moses. "Lerone Bennett has succeeded in giving his readers an intimate look into the physical, mental, and spiritual growth of Dr. King" (Boston Globe).

        Charlie And The Chocolate Factory

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1964. First edition, second issue, in full red cloth and with five lines of publishing information on last page. First-issue dust jacket, without the ISBN number on the rear panel. Octavo, original red cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "This book is for Maura Dhu who's [sic] father we love Roald Dahl." Also, signed by Dahl's wife, "Patricia Neal Dahl March 1968", in her hand. The recipient was Maura Dhu, daughter of Jack Albertson, the man who played Charlie Bucket's Grandpa Joe in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the 1971 film version of this title. A nice association. "Charlie earned for its author a cult following among child readers Dahl has been called a literary genius; his books have been considered modern fairy tales" (Silvey, 186). "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is already a great classic work [and] one of the most enduring post-war children?'s books Dahl is undeniably special" (Connolly, 102).

The Bell Jar. [Second edition (Readers Union Group)].

Heinemann,, [1964]. 8vo., Second Edition; original green cloth, backstrip lettered in silver, a very good, bright, clean copy in similar dustwrapper, the latter lightly age-soiled (rather more so on rear panel), mildly sunned at backstrip and with mark on front panel. This edition was produced under Heinemann's 'Contemporary Fiction' label for members of the Readers Union group of book clubs. It was an optional selection rather than an automatic mailing and accordingly only a limited number seems to have been issued. Other than the first edition of the previous year this is the only printing under Plath's pen-name of 'Victoria Lucas' adopted by her as protection against her mother's reaction to an unsympathetic portrayal. Rare, especially in this condition.

Nobel Lectures: Physiology or Medicine 1942-1962.

Amsterdam: Elsevier Publishing Company, 1964. First edition. Thick Octavo, original yellow cloth. Signed by Nobel Laureates Francis Crick and James D. Watson at their Nobel Lecture. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with some closed tears. An exceptional piece signed by these Nobel Prize-winning scientists. In the early 1950s, the race to discover DNA was on. At Cambridge University, graduate student Francis Crick and research fellow James Watson had become interested, impressed especially by Pauling's work. Meanwhile at King's College in London, Maurice Wilkins (b. 1916) and Rosalind Franklin were also studying DNA. The Cambridge team's approach was to make physical models to narrow down the possibilities and eventually create an accurate picture of the molecule. The King's team took an experimental approach, looking particularly at x-ray diffraction images of DNA. Watson and Crick took a crucial conceptual step, suggesting the molecule was made of two chains of nucleotides, each in a helix as Franklin had found, but one going up and the other going down. Crick had just learned of Chargaff's findings about base pairs in the summer of 1952. He added that to the model, so that matching base pairs interlocked in the middle of the double helix to keep the distance between the chains constant. Watson and Crick showed that each strand of the DNA molecule was a template for the other. During cell division the two strands separate and on each strand a new "other half" is built, just like the one before. This way DNA can reproduce itself without changing its structure -- except for occasional errors, or mutations. The structure so perfectly fit the experimental data that it was almost immediately accepted. DNA's discovery has been called the most important biological work of the last 100 years, and the field it opened may be the scientific frontier for the next 100.

An apparently identical print resides at the Smithsonian, but bears the title "Dedans II."

Americans on Everest. The official account of the ascent led by Norman G. Dyhrenfurth.

J.B. Lippincott Company,, Philadelphia, 1964 - Philadelphia, J.B. Lippincott Company, 1964. 24 cm x 16 cm. XXI, 429 pages. Original Hardcover with dustjacket. With several black-and-white pictures. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Jacket slightly torn. In protective mylar. Signed and inscribed by 4 members of the expedition. James Ramsey Ullman (1907 – July 5, 1971) was an American writer and mountaineer. He was born in New York. He was not a high end climber, but his writing made him an honorary member of that circle. The books he wrote were mostly about mountaineering and geography. His works include Banner in the Sky, which was a book based on the true story of the first climbing of the Matterhorn (it was filmed in Switzerland as Third Man on the Mountain), and The White Tower (which would star Glenn Ford and Lloyd Bridges). Also Americans on Everest by James Ramsay Ullman, page 195, published by J. B. Lippincott Company 1964, Library of Congress Catalogue #64-14475. He was the ghost writer for Tenzing Norgay's autobiography Man of Everest (originally published as Tiger of the Snows). High Conquest was the first of nine books for the J.B. Lippincott company coming out in 1941 followed by The White Tower, River of The Sun, Windom's Way, and Banner in the Sky which was a 1955 Newbery Honor book. All of these titles became small motion pictures. He also wrote the short story "Top Man", a story about mountaineers climbing K3, a mountain in India. The story appears in several anthologies. It was originally published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1940. Issue #35. Beyond his mountaineering books, he wrote "Where the Bong Tree Grows," an account of a year he spent traveling through some of the most remote islands of the South Pacific. Ullman also wrote a novel about the poet Arthur Rimbaud, The Day on Fire (1958). He joined the American Mount Everest Expedition 1963 as official historian. Because of health problems he had to stay in Kathmandu. His book Americans on Everest: The Official Account of the Ascent was published in 1964. He died in Boston from cancer on July 5, 1971.         Autograph Letter Signed on "Gigot" stationery showing Kelly as director and Jackie Gleason as star, 4to, n.p., May 18, 1961

To Jay Kanter, Hollywood agent, Vice-President of MCA Artists, Inc.   Gene Kelly was on location in Paris, filming "Gigot," a film based on an original story of Jackie Gleason who starred in it and which was produced by Kenneth Hyman.   He writes to his agent, "Just a short note from all us Parisians to all you Californians, mainly to say 'hello' and tell you you ]sic] that everything is going very well so far and the project looks most interesting. Gleason has been wonderful to work with, and Stark and Hyman have given me nothing but the finest treatment." He asks for news from Beverly Hills, if there is "anything further on Mrs. Midas," and "what was that little hint you dropped me about some kind of acting job...." The Gene Kelly filmography suggests that if Kanter did have a job lined up for him, it could have been the 1964 film, "What a Way to Go!" or the 1966 "Les Demoiselle de Rochefort," both of which starred Kelly.   Ray Stark mentioned above, was a Hollywood agent who, with Eliot Hyman founded Seven Arts Productions in 1957. Seven Arts is the production company associated with "Gigot." They produced "Lolita," "Two for the Seesaw," and many other films.   Kelly closes with "Jeanne and I send our love..." and signs, "Gene." He refers to his wife, Jeanne. "On August 6, 1960, Gene Kelly's personal life took a decided upswing, as he married for the second time. His new wife was an old friend, his long-time dance assistant, Jeanne Coyne.

        Barefoot in the Park.

Random House, New York 1964 - First edition of the playwright's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket. Signed by Neil Simon on the title page. Paul and Corie Bratter are newlyweds in every sense of the word. He's a straight-as-an-arrow lawyer and she's a free spirit always looking for the latest kick. Their new apartment is her most recent find-too expensive with bad plumbing and in need of a paint job. After a six day honeymoon, they get a surprise visit from Corie's loopy mother and decide to play matchmaker during a dinner with their neighbor-in-the-attic Velasco, where everything that can go wrong, does. Paul just doesn't understand Corie, as she sees it. He's too staid, too boring and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous, running "barefoot in the park" would be a start. "A bubbling, rib-tickling comedy." (The New York Times) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
