The Gospel According to St. Matthew [Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo] (Original photograph of Pasolini on the set of the 1964 film)

Arco Films / Lux Compagnie Cinématographique de France, Italy 1964 - Vintage photograph of director Pier Paolo Pasolini and crew on the set of his 1964 film, "The Gospel According to St. Matthew," by photographer Angelo Novi. A magnificent shot, capturing the immediacy of the crew (and a philosophically distracted Pasolini) as well as the panorama of the Fosso Castello Waterfalls in Soriano nel Cimino, Italy. In the valley below, near the waterfall, the cast can be seen performing the baptism of Christ. With Angelo Novi's stamp and a press agency stamp on the verso, along with other notations.Typically offbeat Pasolini touches included having Satan disguise himself as a Catholic priest, along with the casting of the director's own mother as the Virgin Mary. The music is selected from a variety of sources, from Bach to American spirituals. Il Vangelo Secondo Matteo" was released in the US as "The Gospel According to St. Matthew," much to the discomfort of Pasolini, who didn't want Matthew designated as a saint.8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine.

Grapefruit (First Edition, inscribed at the Judson Church Gallery opening, 1966)

Wuntemaum Press, Tokyo 1964 - First Edition. One of 500 copies printed, preceding the UK edition by four years. INSCRIBED by Yoko Ono on the first blank: "To Helen, / 1966, opening / Judson Church Gallery / NYC, NY / Yoko Ono." The author, poet, and conceptual artist's first book. The inscription almost certainly refers to opening night of "The Stone" on March 10th, 1966, a collaborative environment conducted by Ono's then-husband, Anthony Cox. Michael Mason supplied sound forms, Jon Hendricks supplied "air", and Jeff Perkins a film message. For her part, Ono contributed "Eye Bags": black bags which participants crawled inside of and could see through, although they could not be seen within by spectators--in effect the inverse of a one-way mirror. Ono's first book, a groundbreaking conceptual piece made up of "event scores," series of actions, ideas, or instructions that take the place of physical works of art and can be performed by another individual (an example being the piece titled, "Painting to Exist Only When It's Copied or Photographed: Let people copy or photograph your paintings. Destroy the originals.")While a handful of signed copies have have shown up in commerce in the last couple of decades, most have generic inscriptions referencing a season, e.g. 1965, Autumn. This is the only copy we have encountered with a contemporary inscription that can be pinpointed to a time and place-and most importantly, one of Ono's own installations.Very Good or better in original white perfect bound wrappers. Wrappers lightly soiled and foxed, with some of the usual production wrinkle at the spine. Still, a tight, square copy. In a lovely black cloth clamshell box with a leather spine label titled in gilt.Munroe and Hendricks, Yes Yoko Ono, pages 82-83, 313. Hendricks, Fluxus Codex, pages 418-419.         Etudes Cinematographiques: Akira Kurosawa (First Edition, signed by Kurosawa)

Etudes Cinematographiques no. 30 - 31, Paris 1964 - First Edition. SIGNED by Akira Kurosawa in both Japanese and Roman letters. Founded in 1960 by professor and literary critic Georges-Albert Astre and literature and film critic Henri Agel, "Etudes Cinematographiques" distinguished itself from the other foundational French film journals "Cahiers du Cinema" and "Positif" by taking a broader, more traditionally academic focus on issues. The journal published less frequently than its competitors, with each issue focusing on a single filmmaker or topic, allowing for more considered pieces and a broader range of opinions, rather than being associated with a singular point of view, as "Cahiers du Cinema" was with the French New Wave. This is particularly interesting in light of this issue's focus on Kurosawa, then still at the height of his international fame, but largely dismissed by New Wave critics in favor of the work of Kenji Mizoguchi. Kurosawa's signature is rare, this being the first example we have ever offered for sale. From the collection of noted cinephile and collector Pierre Goulliard, who spent decades in the latter half of the twentieth century obtaining inscriptions from the giants of European cinema.Near Fine in wrapper. Lightly soiled, with couple of spots of foxing to the spine and a tap to the crown. Text in French, with photo illustrations accompanying some of the articles.       Berlin: Der Beauftrage d. Ev. Kirche f. Mission. [1964]. Poster. Measuring 16.5" x 11.5". Printed in black and red on glazed paper stock. Fine. Poster for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s visit to Cold War Berlin in 1964.In 1964 West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt invited Dr. King to open the 14th annual cultural festival of the city, which had prepared a triumphant welcome for President John F. Kennedy only one year before. Dr. King used the opportunity to deliver a sermon on universal brotherhood: saying that although the city "stands as a symbol of the division of men on the face of the earth," it was clear that "on either side of the wall are God's children, and no man-made barrier can obliterate that fact."In his only one-and-a-half days in the city, Dr. King visited the Berlin Wall (where only the day before an East German had escaped to the West, provoking a gun battle between U.S. soldiers and East German border guards), opened the city's cultural festival that also included a memorial service for John F. Kennedy, delivered a sermon to more than 20,000 West Berliners at an outdoor arena, and was awarded an honorary degree by the Theological School of the Protestant Church. Most spectacularly, and without a passport, King managed to cross the border at Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin, where he preached to an enthusiastic crowd in the overflowing St. Mary's Church at Alexander Square about the struggle for civil rights in his own country, bringing greetings from "Christian brothers and sisters" both from the United States and West Berlin. Since so many (especially young) people came to see Dr. King, he had to hold another service in the nearby Sophia Church for almost 2,000 people. Afterwards, he met with students from Humboldt University and church officials before returning to the sector of the city controlled by the Western Allies.Only three months later, he returned to Europe to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. An exceptionally uncommon poster for Dr. King's important, if often overlooked, appearance in Germany. .

Second New York Film Festival (Original Poster, inscribed to Amos Vogel)

Lincoln Center / List Art Poster and Print Program, New York 1964 - Original lithograph designed by Saul Bass for the Second New York Film Festival, held at Lincoln Center on September 14-26, 1964. INSCRIBED at the bottom right by Bass to Film Festival founder Amos Vogel: "to Amos Vogel : from Saul Bass."The New York Film Festival was founded in 1963 by Amos Vogel and Richard Roud, and to this day serves as a major taste-maker for American cinephiles, bringing the best films from around the world by directors established, new, and forgotten. The 1964 festival began with Grigori Kozintsev's "Hamlet," concluded with Satyajit Ray's "The Big City," and featured Bunuel's "L'Age d'or" as it's retrospective feature. As influential and forward-thinking as the festival is, it is matched by its iconic poster designs. Developed by Vera List, a New York City art collector and philanthropist, the poster program commissioned some the most famous artist of the day to design posters that would function as much as art as advertisement. In addition to Saul Bass, artists who have designed posters for the festival include Larry Rivers, Bruce Conner, Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Richard Avedon, Robert Rauschenberg, and Cindy Sherman.Amos Vogel (1921-2012) was one of the most influential cineastes in New York City. He is best known for his bestselling book "Film as a Subversive Art" (1974) and as the founder of the New York City avantgarde ciné-club Cinema 16 (1947-1963), where he was the first programmer to present films by Roman Polanski, John Cassavetes, Nagisa Oshima, Jacques Rivette and Alain Resnais as well as early and important screenings by American avant-gardists of the time like Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, James Broughton, Kenneth Anger, Sidney Peterson, Bruce Conner, Carmen D'Avino and many others. In 1963, together with Richard Roud, he founded the New York Film Festival, and served as its program director until 1968. In 1973, Vogel started the Annenberg Cinematheque at the University of Pennsylvania and was eventually given a Chair for film studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, where he taught and lectured for two decades.Near Fine condition. White background lightly soiled, with a touch of professional restoration to the edges. 29.75 X 45.75 inches, linen backed and rolled. AUTOMATIC PILOT

Fuck You Press, New York 1964 - 4to. Side-stapled pictorial wraps. pp. [ii], [1], 2-37, plus covers. Cover printed offset, the remainder mimeographed rectos only (except rear cover printed verso). Very good plus. Mild wear and soil. Faint crease to last quarter or so of leaves. Else clean and sound. PROVENANCE: Izzy Young's copy, with his contemporary ownership inscription to last page: "Israel G. Young, December 2, 1964, from Ed Sanders, printed on my mimeograph." Young was a central figure throughout the 1960s NYC music and literary scenes. He founded the Folklore Center, produced Dylan's first concert in 1961 (Dylan even wrote a song for/about him, "Talking Folklore Center"), and was close to Sanders, helping to print several titles from from his Fuck You Press on the mimeo machine at the Center, this title included. An excellent association and a superior example of this uncommon Fuck You Press title, published in association with City Light Books. Hard to imagine a better copy. [FUG YOU pp. 12-13].         Tokyo. Preface by Maurice Pinguet

Crown Publishers, 1964. In - 4° (355x260mm), pp. 184 interamente illustrate con fotografie in b.n. di William Klein. Legatura editoriale t. tela con sovraccoperta nera con ideogramma in rosso. Perfetto stato. Prima edizione. "Here is Tokyo. Not Tokyo for the tourist or Tokyo or travel posters, but everyday Tokyo in all its contradictions, discords, beauty, and appeal" (dal risvolto di sovraccoperta). "Like Hokusai, William Klein has created a Manga--a sudden throng of images, faces, streets, crowds, and attitudes, intense and confused, where the past merges with the future in an uproar of appearances. All are instantaneously caught, still moving, alive, and gesturing" (Maurice Pinguet). "William Klein's lasting legacy to photography will be his four city books: New York (1956), Rome (1959), Tokyo and Moscow (both 1964)....Tokyo is my favourite, not least because it sees Klein returning to the city whose photographic culture he helped to revolutionize. In 1964 Tokyo was the most populous city on earth and the world's media were about to descend to cover the Olympic Games. Three years later James Bond arrived in You Only Live Twice, sealing a popular iconography for Tokyo that barely seems to have changed. Klein's assessment of the city incorporates every Tokyo cliché but in pushing them to breaking point it soars above them too.......After New York and Rome Klein increased his page size so that when you open up the full - bleed double spreads of Tokyo they are more than half a metre wide. With those dense, complex compositions in your lap you feel like you're up close to a huge mural, not a page...this is where Klein is at his best, achieving the most powerful effects with the most unlikely material. I've no idea why he was in attendance at a meeting of an agricultural committee or how he got so close to the ceiling but his shot through a chandelier of bored bureaucrats in session is such a photographic joy. It is difficult to look at it and not imagine Klein muttering to himself: 'Jeeeesus this is boring! What can I do here? Ah, a chandelier! '.......Of all his books it is Tokyo I take down from the shelf most often. It's so rich, so relentlessly inventive that I can never remember it all and find myself constantly surprised. It was published in New York and Tokyo. I've no idea how Tokyo received it. No doubt it was measured against the experience of those who lived there. For the rest who saw it in 1964 I imagine it was seductive, bewildering, breathless, cacophonous, grotesque, gorgeous, informative and very intelligent. It is still."
