        CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1964 - Octavo, 161 pages, with profuse black and white drawings by Joseph Schindelman. This is the true first edition (the English edition was not published until 1967), and is the first issue, with six lines of printing information on the last page, a price of $3.95 on the dustjacket, mustard endpapers, and no ISBN on the rear dustjacket panel. As called for in the first issue, the Oompa-Loompas are black, not orange or white. This copy is internally fine, without names, inscriptions or marks of any kind. It is bound in burgundy cloth with a title medallion stamped in blind on the front panel and a spine title in gilt. The top edge is stained pale plum. There is possibly a hint of fingerprints on the rear panel near the outside margin. Two dustjackets are included, the original and a facsimile. The original dustjacket is complete and without tears or nicks, though there is a crease at the top of one flap and light wear to spine ends. However, the jacket shows considerable soil and foxing on both front and back. The facsimile dustjacket is new and perfect. An extremely good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Muhammad Ali

[1960s]. <p>Autograph Manuscript Signed <i><b>"Muhammad</b></i>" in text, 1 page, 8" x 5", [n.p., n.d., but c. 1964-early 1970s, being a page from a lecture he delivered on behalf of the Nation of Islam. The page bears two minor contemporary ink smudges, else fine condition.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The page reads in full: <i><b>"with them, But the South is the blame for mistreating us the So Called Negroes, The Hon Elijah Muhammad is between life and death. And he have to say these things."</b></i> </p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Ali attended his first Nation of Islam meeting in 1961 and soon became an intimate of Malcom X. In 1964 he formally joined the Nation, and its leader Elijah Muhammad anointed him Muhammad (one who is worthy of praise) Ali (fourth rightly guided caliph). Only a few weeks after he joined the Nation, Malcolm X broke to convert to mainstream Sunni, but Ali remained with the Nation (a move he cited as a major regret later in life). Citing his religious beliefs, he resisted the draft landing him in court. </p> <p>The subsequent legal cases and appeals kept him out of boxing for some time, and he toured the country lecturing on Islam. In 1975 Ali left the Nation himself, turning, like Malcolm X, to Sunni Islam (he became an adherent of Sufism in 2005).</p>

        Farewell the Floating Cunt.

Cleveland: Renegade Press,, 1964. Square octavo (180 x 150 mm), pp. [15]. Original white wire-stitched card wrappers, titles to front cover in blue, vignette in blue and green. Printed in blue, green and brown, 3 full page block prints. Browning to edges, light soiling to covers, creasing to top edge of 2 leaves which extend above the book block; a very good copy. First edition, first printing, one of 105 copies of this rare collection of concrete poetry constructed from obscenities, excusing itself with an epigraph from Mark Twain: "When angry count four... if still angry swear". The Renegade Press was Levy's own publishing house, with which he published his own and others' works on his hand press, or in mimeographed editions. In 1966 Levy was indicted for distributing obscene poetry to minors. He was arrested again in 1967 and his pressing materials were confiscated. In 1968 the prosecutor agreed to drop the obscenity charges against Levy on the condition that he paid a $200 fine and no longer associated with juveniles or gave them his poetry. Of the 105 copies printed, 19 are housed in American institutions. This, taking into account a presumably high attrition rate for such a production, must leave precious few available to collectors.

        THE PAPER SNAKE

(Something Else Press) (1964), (New York) - Oblong 4to. In original illustrated dust jacket. INSCRIBED by Johnson to friend and art critic Suzi Gablik with a small drawing of an arrow piercing a heart that has the word "Love" written inside. Jacket tanned with a small chip to the top of the front panel. Boards a bit bowed. Else near fine. Gablik, a friend of Johnson's since their days together at Black Mountain College, was largely responsible for first exposing Johnson's work to a wider audience. In the autumn of 1955, she brought Elisabeth Novick to photograph the installation of dozens of Johnson's moticos, photographs that appeared in the inaugural issue of THE VILLAGE VOICE that October. In Gablik's seminal book POP ART REDEFINED (1969), she recalled that event: "The random arrangement [.] on a dilapidated cellar door in Lower Manhattan may even have been the first informal Happening." Gablik continued to champion Johnson's work throughout her career and they remained close until the artist's untimely death in 1995. The only inscribed Johnson we&#146;ve ever seen and a major association. [Frank p. 8]. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
