A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper with a little loss to spine ends, and with one short closed tear to head of spine. First edition, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO TONY AND JUNE TILLINGHAST: 'for Tony and June, in friendship, Bryan 19/2/64'. Tony Tillinghast was Johnson's close friend and literary sounding board. He died of cancer the year after this book was presented, at the age of twenty-nine. Poems was Johnson's second book to be published, after his novel Travelling People, issued the previous year, and one of the very few Tillinghast survived to see in print. A wonderful and poignant association.

L'ouvrage comporte 8 miniatures à pleine page comprenant de 1 à 5 vignettes, 7 vignettes en en-tête de chapitre, 67 lettrines décorées. La couverture est entièrement recouverte d'une grande composition. Toutes les compositions, originales, ont été réalisées (dessin et mise en couleurs) par Jean Gradassi.La typographie, entièrement composée à la main en caractère Gothique corps 12, ainsi que le tirage des bois, ont été exécutés sur les presse de la société d'imprimerie Méditerranéenne, à Nice, par Roger La Noé, Maître imprimeur. La gravure sur bois des frises, cadre, titres et faux-titres sont l'oeuvre d'henri Renaud, graveur à Romainville. Les couleurs ont été appliquées à la main dans les ateliers spécialisés d'Edmond Vairel, à Monaco. Tirage à 810 exemplaires. Celui-ci est un des 750 sur pur chiffon de Lana. Quelques infimes frottements à la soie du boitier sinon parfaite condition pour l'une des réalisations les plus abouties du miniaturiste Jean Gradassi.

First edition, unique copy specially bound and with 20 additional plates, unnumbered (from a limited edition of 525 copies) and inscribed by Keynes on the limitation leaf, "This is a special copy bound in full morocco with added material showing progressive stages of the printing of the plates. Geoffrey Keynes." Keynes (1887?1982) was an academic, biographer, and the younger brother of John Maynard Keynes. He was a world authority on Blake, and was instrumental in the production of the Trianon facsimiles, writing the accompanying bibliographical texts and contributing material from his own collection.

Folding creases and a few small edge tears; overall in very good condition. 9 x 15 inches (23.2 x 38 cm).From the papers of Joan Daves, King's literary agent.King's Why We Can't Wait, based on his famous essay of the previous year and written with help from several editors, describes 1963 as the beginning of the "Negro revolution": "Just as lightning makes no sound until it strikes, the Negro Revolution generated quietly. But when it struck, the revealing flash of its power and the impact of its sincerity and fervor displayed a force of a frightening intensity. Three hundred years of humiliation, abuse, and deprivation cannot be expected to find voice in a whisper." (Why We Can't Wait, p. 16). The book was well received and shed particular light on Birmingham as "the most segregated city in America."

Measuring approx. 21 x 14 cm, signed with his name in full "Martin Luther King Jr.". Originally sent to a journalist at the Swedish newspaper "Dagens Nyheter" in 1966, at the time King spoke in Stockholm. <br><br><br />The lines here penned encapsulate some of the essence of King's extraordinary vision: "It is tragic indeed that we seldom see people in their true humaness. "President Johnson should be free to select his own running mate" Complete TranscriptThere have been a number of inquiries about the Attorney General's views on the campaign to write in his name for the Office of Vice President in the primary election in New Hampshire next week. The AG as he has said he intends to remain with the Justice Dept. thru November and he has not yet decided what he will do after the election. He has made it clear that the choice of Democratic nominee for Vice President will be made as it should be made, but the Democratic Convention in August, guided by the wishes of President Johnson and that President Johnson should be free to select his own running mate. [For these reasons, the Attorney General has not been in touch with anyone in New Hampshire or taken any action to encourage the campaign. In fact he has discouraged in the past and will continue to discourage any efforts on his behalf.]Historical BackgroundAfter John F. Kennedy's assassination, many Democrats looked to Robert Kennedy to carry his brother's legacy. Supporters thought that if RFK was not the presidential nominee, he should at least become the vice-presidential candidate on the 1964 Democratic ticket with Lyndon Johnson. Despite their public personas and supporters' desires, the two men despised each other. According to Jeff Shesol in his book, Mutual Contempt, Lyndon Johnson, Robert Kennedy, and the Feud that Defined a Decade, Johnson thundered "I'll quit it first!" at the mere suggestion of tapping Bobby Kennedy as his running mate, followed by "I don't want it that much!" For his part, Kennedy was both a political realist as well as the Johnson administration's Attorney General. He worked to discourage a write-in campaign in any of the Democratic primaries, especially the pivotal New Hampshire primary. Early talk suggested that Kennedy make a public announcement, but to avoid appearing arrogant, he decided to make the announcement though the Justice Department's press office. The statement went through multiple drafts; this is the next-to-last, and the official statement was even shorter-a mere two sentences with 65 words (as opposed to 154 words here).Kennedy's official position was that the choice of a vice-presidential candidate belonged to convention delegates and Johnson, and Kennedy reiterated that he had "not been in touch with anyone in New Hampshire or taken any action to encourage the campaign." Nonetheless, more than 25,000 New Hampshire Democrats wrote in Kennedy's name for vice president; Johnson, with name printed on the ballot, received 29,635 votes. In the end, Kennedy did not stay at Justice, instead, he left in September 1964 to run for a vacant New York Senate seat. Happy to have him out of his administration, Johnson campaigned for Kennedy that fall.As the Vietnam War grew increasingly unpopular, the animosity between the two Democrats lead to Kennedy's primary challenge to Johnson beginning in March 1968. However, Kennedy only entered the contest after seeing Johnson's vulnerability-less-well-known Eugene McCarthy had nearly defeated Johnson in the New Hampshire primary on March 12. With two serious challenges from within his own party, Johnson stunned the nation on March 31, 1968, with a televised announcement that he was dropping out of the race. Tragically, the highly-popular Kennedy, on the verge of gaining the nomination and possibly the White House, was shot and killed on live television in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968, just hours after winning the California primary.

In Brief 2 (1967) äußert er sich explizit über zeitgenössische Schriftsteller, hier besonders Günter Grass, den er als pervertiert bezeichnet. Auch in diesem Brief gibt es Hinweise und Titelangaben auf Werke, die als Manuskript vorlägen, aber noch nicht in den Druck gegangen sind. Beide Briefe sind wohlerhalten, sie befinden sich in den original Briefumschlägen im Format C6, die Umschläge mit handschriftlichen Notizen des Empfängers.

"You can hear the perfumes of my metaphorical grandparents," Thomas states. "There is a wonderful tradition that I adore, I understand, and care about, but I have my two feet facing forward." Thomas's vision toward the future, her understanding of the present, and her respect for the past is evident in her art. Most striking in her music, however, is its exquisite humanity and poetry of the soul. The notion that music takes over where words cease is hardly more true than in her musical voice." "Born in Glen Cove, New York, Thomas was appointed University Professor of Composition at the University of Chicago in 2011. University Professors are selected for internationally recognized eminence in their fields as well as for their potential for high impact across the University. Thomas will become the 16th person ever to hold a University Professorship, and the fifth currently at the University. Additionally, she was the Mead Composer-in-Residence with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) from May 1997 through June 2006, a residency that culminated in the premiere of Astral Canticle ? one of two finalists for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize in Music. During her residency with the CSO, under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, Thomas not only premiered nine commissioned works, but also founded, along with Cliff Colnot, and curated the MusicNOW series. Her music has been commissioned by leading ensembles and organizations around the world including: Love Songs (Chanticleer); Chanting to Paradise (NDR [German Radio] Orchestra); Song in Sorrow (The Cleveland Orchestra); Orbital Beacons, Aurora, In My Sky at Twilight, Ceremonial, Carillon Sky, Words of the Sea, Trainwork, Tangle, and Astral Canticle (Chicago Symphony Orchestra); Prayer Bells (Pittsburgh Symphony); Bells Ring Summer (La Jolla Chamber Music Society); Galaxy Dances, and Cello Concerto (National Symphony); Violin Concerto (Radio France and the BBC Orchestra); Helios Choros I (Dallas Symphony); Helios Choros II (London and Boston Symphony Orchestras); Helios Choros III (Orchestre de Paris); Pulsar (BBC); Terpsichore's Dream (Utah Symphony); Canticle Weaving (Los Angeles Philharmonic); and Cantos for Slava (ASCAP Foundation)." "From 1993 to 2001, Thomas was an assistant professor, then associate professor of composition at the Eastman School of Music, and from 2001 until 2006 she was the Wyatt Professor of Music at Northwestern University. Frequently, Thomas undertakes short-term residencies in colleges, universities, and festivals across the United States and in Europe." The central element of the map consists of an illustrated timeline of the composition in 18 minutes accompanied by annotations in brightly-coloured inks relating to various elements of the work including instrumentation, dynamics, tempi, and harmonic concepts ("outlining harmonies are Interlocking Chasing lines"). These ideas are further developed with additional text expanding performance indications, including such idiosyncratic directives as "Playful & Optimistic," "Capricious & Energized Like a chase," "Dancing on tip-toes," etc. With bright bands of colour extending along the timeline parallelling specific tempo markings and performance directives and additional graphic elements woven along the timeline including wavy lines, dots, dashes, etc. and a text block including the autograph notation "Formal Concerns: Braiding, twing, twisting... encircling interplaiting...," incorporating interlocking lines of colour. The pictorial elements include an image of Selene in her chariot being drawn by a waxing crescent moon in the lower right corner, with accompanying text reading: "In Greek mythology, Selene, goddess of the moon, drives her moon chariot across the sky and the heavens. She is the sister of Sun-god Helios and of Eos, goddess of the dawn" and an image of the Earth surrounded by stars in the upper left corner. With the composer's calligraphic autograph notes on the commissioning and premiere of the work by Third Coast Percussion & Jack Quartet on March 5, 2015 at the Miller Theatre at Columbia University in New York and at the Tanglewood Music Center on June 25, 2015 at head. Interestingly, the composer notes "To be performed with dancers when feasible," an intriguing additional dimension of the work.
