[Bay of Pigs Invasion] Heroes de Giron

[no place given, likely Havana]: La Comision de Orientacion Revolucionaria de la Direccion Nacional del partido Unido de la Revolucion Socialista, undated, ca. 1963. First Edition (?). Stapled wrappers. Good. Oblong quarto, unpaginated (about 50pp). A good copy in the original pictorial stapled wrappers. Text block partly coming away from the wrappers, which are somewhat foxed and have general edgewear, but minimal chipping. Some mild internal foxing, but mostly a clean example. This scarce volume honors the fallen men who successfully fought back the Bay of Pigs invasion (a total disaster for the US and the CIA), with gallant, yet modest headshots of each comrade who perished in the fighting, including their age and occupation. It contains an opening epitaph by Fidel Castro. Text in Spanish. OCLC locates four copies - three in the United States and one in the National Library of China. A really wonderful example of a propaganda document, dating from the first few years of Castro's reign, when he was being tested by both the United States and the weight of his own revolution.

        Portfolio One. The Seasons.

San Francisco: Sierra Club, 1963 - Folio. 12 original dye-transfer prints, dry-mounted as issued. With two copies of the title and limitation page (as usual). Housed in a linen portfolio with ties, gilt titles to front panel. A fine copy. First edition, first printing, of this fine suite of colour nature photographs. "As its name implies, the dye transfer process literally involves transferring dyes (cyan, magenta, and yellow) in succession and in careful registration onto a sheet of gelatin-coated paper. Porter remained committed to the dye-transfer process, both before and after the invention of simpler and more commonly used color papers, because it delivered richly colored prints and allowed him to control the exact hues and contrast of each final print" (Eliot Porter Collection Guide, Amon Carter Museum of American Art website). Having pursued colour photography since the 1930s, Porter found his first real publishing success with the Sierra Club, who published his Thoreau-inspired photoessay, In Wildness is the Preservation of the World, in 1962. Porter served as director of the Sierra Club, an early leader in the American conservationist movement, from 1965 to 1971. [Attributes: First Edition]

Tipped in at the rear of this volume is a typed letter on University of Adelaide letterhead signed by the Registrar, awarding Mountford his MA 'when you have made some minor corrections'. These may be the corrigenda typed onto small pasted-on strips of paper scattered throughout the work (many of them relate to citations in the footnotes). In 1965, Mountford published 'Ayers Rock. Its People, Their Beliefs and Their Art'; in the acknowledgements he refers to this MA thesis 'which forms the core of this book'.

[Page proofs]: Where the Wild Things Are

New York: Harper & Row, 1963. Near Fine. Measuring 56" x 42". Some light wear at edges and a few light scattered creases, near fine. A production page proof for Maurice Sendak's classic children's book, Where the Wild Things Are. The proof is printed on both sides and retains its original bright and vibrant colors. It comes from the personal archives of a distinguished children's book author and editor who worked closely with both Sendak and the book's editor, Ursula Nordstrom. While there is no jacket present to verify the issue points, as typical for a first edition of the book, the title page is conspicuously missing its Library of Congress identification number suggesting it was printed prior to securing one as required for publication. Further, we have only been able to locate one other known copy of page proof for Where the Wild Things Are in the Maurice Sendak Collection at the Rosenbach Museum, and it too lacks the LOC number on the title page. An amazing artifact from what is one of the most popular and influential children's book of the 20th Century.copies.

        Switching Theories in Space Technology

Stanford, CA Stanford University Press 1963 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Bookplate of Ruth M. Davis. A superb, fresh copy in the jacket that is lightly rubbed at the edges with a few short closed tears and a longer closed tear along the spine panel. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy inscribed by Aiken to fellow computer pioneer Ruth Davis on the front free endpaper, "To Ruth Davis with best regards from Howard Aiken" and also signed by William Main. Trained as a physicist, Howard Aiken was a computer pioneer who designed of IBM's Harvard Mark I to solve the differential equations used in physics research. Installed in 1944, it was first used to solve mathematical problems for the Manhattan Project and was programmed in part by Grace Hopper. The Mark I became the prototype for future supercomputers, including Aiken's follow-ups, Harvard Marks II-IV. Books inscribed by Aiken are rare, and this is an excellent association, as the recipient, Ruth Davis (1928-2012), was "a pioneer in satellites and computers" (The National Academies Press biography). She earned a PhD in mathematics in 1955, the first woman to do so at the University of Maryland, College Park. She then worked for the Navy, where she wrote some of the earliest computer code for Naval nuclear reactors and was a founder of the Navy's Command and Control Technology Organization. Davis served as director of the NBS Institute for Computer Sciences and Technology the HEW National Center for Biomedical Communication. "She rose to become deputy undersecretary of defense for research and advance technology" where she "created some of the earliest computer software for defense and space applications" (National Academies Press). Davis was an early proponent of encryption for non-military uses and initiated important projects on high speed integrated circuits, lasers and particle beams, the first satellite communications system for remote healthcare applications, the first computer network for medical literature, and early automation systems. The present volume is a collection of twenty-five papers on the use of logic circuits in space technology, and would have been of particular interest to Davis.
