I am hoping that Mrs. Higgins' set will be finished in a very few days. Is there anything else you would like me to do as I am quite anxious to get back to where I belong - particularly in view of the unhappiness of the last weeks.         Albert Einstein, George Bernard Shaw, Josef Goebbels and Arturo Toscanini in a wooden crib.

      c. 1963 - Sheet size: 140 × 175 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Pen and ink on wove paper. An unlikely grouping – GBS in a shawl; Goebbels carrying a cosh – drawn to illustrate a portmanteau review. Biographies of Shaw, Einstein, and Toscanini, and an edition of Goebbels's diaries were all published in 1963. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Playscript]: The Passion of Josef D.

Arthur Cantor, New York 1963 - Quarto. Mimeographed sheets secured with prong fasteners in stiff wrappers with title applied on paper label. Very good. A cheery little musical play about Joseph Stalin that featured Peter Falk in the title role. This copy of the script Inscribed by Chayefsky to New York critic Leonard Lyons: "July 31/63. Dear Lennie -- The interpolation in p. 1-3-17 will be in the newly mimeographed scripts -- Paddy." On the designated page appears the printed set direction: "It is packed with revolutionaries, men and women." Chayefsky has hand written at the end of the passage a reference to Lyons' wife: "including that notorious terrorist, 'Grandma' Sylvia Lyons." Lyons was a syndicated columnist for the *New York Post*, who wrote the influential column on Broadway, "The Lyon's Den." Rare, and with a nice association.         Three Notebooks of Sketches and Plans for Installations, with Related Material

1963. Three composition books, each a small 4to., with additional photographs, drawings and ephemera. Some wear and light toning to pages, but generally near fine. & & A significant archive of unrecorded material from the artist associated with the Semina Circle. Talbert was born in LA, the son of a truck driver. After a stint in the army he enrolled in UCLA, where he soon enrolled in the art department. In 1961 his rwork appeared in the 1961 "Object Makers" show at Pomona College, his exhibition debut, and in that same year had his first one man show at the Pasadena Art Museum. However, and in 1965 he appeared in three group shows at the Dwan Gallery. Apart from these exhibitions, his work was not widely shown, however, perhaps because of the intense eroticism of his work, which remains challenging even today. While Talbert was adept at incorporating pop imagery in his work, this a whole different take on Pop than the cerebral and distant exercises which the form took in New York - his imagery and colors are lurid and feverish. By the sixties heavy drinking and drug use were taking their toll on Talbert. His career was resurrected briefly in 1969, when he met an exotic dancer named Gayle Davis who helped to catalogue his work, which resulted in a 1973 show at the Mermaid Tavern in Topanga. Talbert died the next year from an accidental overdose. This archive includes three sketchbooks, each in varying degrees of completion. The sketches, ranging from fully detailed drawings to impressionistic nudes, are executed in a variety of media: pencil, pen and ink, marker, gouache, colored pencil, watercolor, and a few in ball-point pen. There are 69 pages of reasonably fully executed drawings bound in, plus an additional 5 laid in, for a total of 74 pages of drawings. There are 21 pages of handwritten and illustrated plans for installations, plus another 2 laid in for a total of 23 pages. There are about 14 pages of drawing exercises bound in, where Talbert attempted to draw every conceivable object (often more than a dozen objects to a page). Also included are color snapshots of various works, several additional drawings, invitations to a couple of posthumous shows, and several black and white photographs made into greeting cards, which show Talbert and Gayle Davis, as well as a valentine collage inscribed by Davis to Talbert. A significant trove of work from an important artist whose work has still to be fully understood in the story of postwar art in California.

        Signed Photograph of JFK's Funeral

Washington, 1963. unbound. First generation signed black-and-white glossy photograph, 11 x 8.5 inches, a closeup of the famous image unofficially titled "The Salute," showing John F. Kennedy Jr. saluting his father's casket. This photo was taken on November 25, 1963, while Farrell was on assignment covering the president's funeral for the New York Daily News. Signed "Dan Farrell" in blue ball-point pen on the white margin at the bottom. Note: over the past 50 years, Farrell has chosen not to make a cottage industry out of signing quantities of this image, making autographed versions exceptionally rare. Fine condition. American photo-journalist best remembered for his iconic image of a young John-John Kennedy saluting his father's casket soon after the assassination of the president.

Autograph Letter Signed, on emblematic "Hotel de Castille," stationery, Paris, Nov. 4, 1963

      - Wilson writes to a member of the Society of American Magicians. "I began practicing magic in my boyhood when I came upon a copy of Hoffman's Modern Magic. Later I learned new tricks from time to time from other books on the subject & from amateur & professional magicians I still amuse myself with magic. I also have a magician in my play The Crime in the Whistler Room (Five Plays, Farrar, Straus Co." He signs, "Edmund Wilson." With holograph envelope. Wilson refers to "Modern Magic" by Professor Hoffman, the pseudonym for Angelo Lewis, an attorney, born in London in 1839. Wilson mentions the magician character in one of his three experimental dramas, "The Crime in the Whistler Room," "A Winter in Beech Street," and "Beppo and Beth," all considered satiric portraits of American life. Wilson was the managing editor of "Vanity Fair" in 1920 and 1921, later served as Associate Editor of "The New Republic," and as a book reviewer for "The New Yorker." Wilson's critical works helped foster public appreciation for novelists Ernest Hemingway, John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Vladimir Nabokov.

New York Harper and Row 1963 - First Edition. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, LARRY MCMURTRY. 8vo, publisher’s original cloth, in the original dustjacket. 298pp. A fine copy in like dustjacket, very fresh and attractive. SIGNED COPY OF LARRY MCMURTRY’S SECOND BOOK, every bit as hard to find in collectable condition as his first, HORSEMAN, PASS BY. This copy has been signed boldly on the free-fly by McMurtry in blue ink. The jacket is in what is sometimes called "Second State", which is actually the same printing as the "first" but with the price clipped off by the publisher and replaced by a small sticker (in some cases a stamp) at $4.95. This was all done prior to the book’s original release date, thus only a very small number of copies can be found with the original $4.50 price intact. "Leaving Cheyenne traces the lives of three West Texas characters as they follow that sundown trail: Gideon Fry, the serious rancher; Johnny McCloud, the free-spirited cowhand; and Molly Taylor, the sensitive woman they both love and who bears them each a son. Tragic circumstances mark the trail but McMurtry's style never turns melodramatic or sentimental." - modern editorial review. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
