        Historia romana] [pars prima]

      - In 4to grande (cm 28); bella legatura del XVIII secolo in marocchino rosso, piatti con elaborate decorazioni floreali impresse in oro, dorso a sei nervi con fregi e titolo in oro, risguardi in carta marmorizzata, titolo manoscritto sul taglio laterale; cc. (132, di cui la 1 bianca). Carattere romano. 32-33 linee. Alla carta a2 il testo è incorniciato dalla prima bordura ornamentale su fondo nero ad apparire in un testo a stampa (cfr. A.M. Hind, An Introduction to a History of Woodcut, New York, 1963, II, p. 458 e sgg.).

        Broadside Set

(San Francisco): (Four Seasons Foundation). (1963-1964). Three broadsides: Gary Snyder's Nanao Knows, Lew Welch's Step Out Onto the Planet, and Philip Whalen's Three Mornings. [McNeil A7.] Each reproduced by photo-offset from the author's own calligraphy and printed in an edition of 300 copies on the occasion of a reading by the three poets at Longshoreman's Hall, San Francisco, June 12, 1964. Each broadside is signed by its author. Snyder, Welch and Whalen first met when they attended Reed College, a progressive school in Oregon; the friends later became three of the most influential poets of the Beat generation. Don Carpenter, a friend of Richard Brautigan and an important figure in the Bay Area literary scene, organized the Free Way Reading with the three poets; Don Allen, another key figure in the Bay Area literary scene -- his nascent publishing company, the Four Seasons Foundation, would later publish both Snyder and Brautigan -- printed the broadsides to commemorate the reading. An important occasion, linking three key poets of their time. Welch disappeared in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains in 1971; Snyder found a suicide note at his camp, but no body was ever found and his fate remains one of the mysteries of that time. Each broadside is 9-1/2" x 12-1/2", and mildly sunned as though previously framed; near fine. A nice set. First Edition. No Binding.

Large collection of correspondence from Moore consisting of twenty-four ALSs and three postcards, all written to Professor Edward Galligan of Western Michigan University

various, various. various. "The letters vary in length on several examples of Moore?s personal and professional letterhead, with the letters dating from the early-to-mid 1960s. One letter, dated March 29, 1963, just after his final bout, reads, in part: ?Being anti-this and anti-that is just as bad as being pro-this or pro-that?"unless there is a truthful reason. I enjoyed the article very much on the ?Scientific Racism? by Mr. Simmons. Perhaps Mr. Putnam is like a politician we have for a Gov.here, an opportunist named Brown who leaves a taste of the same color when he utters statements like abolishing boxing or sometimes other things in order to start controversial matters without the benefit of research. Who incidentally reminds me of a fable by my favorite philosopher (x) Aesop...With all the crap regarding genes, scientific racism, scientific religion, America is headed for the rude awakening that the infectious cancerous thing called communism is being presented as bait to the supposedly inferior people, whose chief hope and desire is to become 1st class citizens and help build America in to a place worthy to be looked up to as the land of the free and home of the brave. Few great men have not read or heard of Aesop. Could Jefferson possibly have read of him.? Also included are two photocopied poems by Moore, who has inscribed one. In overall fine condition."

On Her Majesty's Secret Service (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape. 1963., 1963. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION, only 250 copies. IAN FLEMING'S OWN COPY. Colour frontispiece of the author by Charles Amherst Villiers. Publisher's quarter vellum over black cloth. Gilt titles to spine. In original clear plastic wrapper. A fine copy, with one chip to the crown of the jacket. The only Signed Limited Edition of an Ian Fleming book. A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, being one of the author's personal copies (he received the first ten), and then presented to his close friend Amherst Villiers, the illustrator of this volume. Villiers ended up with three copies of this edition- this copy, and an out of series copy both given to him by Fleming, plus a later numbered copy which he personally ordered from the publisher. We have purchased all three copies from the family over the years. This particular example was then givel by Amherst to his son Charles Churchill Villiers (and as such does not have the Villiers bookplate the other two possess). It does however benefit from a loose autograph note from Amherst 'I gave this book to Charlie... I have another copy. Pa' Sold with a copy of the original sales invoice, signed by Villiers. Amherst Villiers had two children, the late Janie Villiers and Charles Churchill Villiers, godson of Sir Winston Churchill. Both made the acquaintance of Fleming bibliographer Jon Gilbert of Adrian Harrington Ltd., who interviewed them whilst researching the book. The Villiers family home was just a short walk from Harrington's bookshop in Kensington. Published in 1963, this is the second part of a collection of James Bond books that has become known as the 'Blofeld' trilogy, sitting between Thunderball (1961) and You Only Live Twice (1964). The title was filmed by Eon Productions in 1969, starring George Lazenby as 007, Diana Rigg as Tracy and Telly Savalas as Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Directed by Peter Hunt, with a terrific storyline and slick script from the ever-reliable screenwriter Richard Maibaum, O.H.M.S.S. features superb action, spectacular locations, a marvelous John Barry score, and, in Contessa Teresa de Vicenzo (aka Tracy, aka Mrs James Bond), probably the greatest Bond Girl of all time. The movie, unlike most in the series, was faithful to the original Ian Fleming novel and is a fine thriller; one of the grittiest movies of the series. Gilbert A11a.

        Correspondence regarding Book Collecting

1963, 1963. July-December 1963. A series of letters between Ian Fleming, Percy Muir and a Canadian reader of 'The Book Collector' journal regarding a potential rare book. 5 letters, two of which are signed by Fleming; 1) An enquiry from the reader describing her book, addressed 'Dear Mr Fleming'. 2 pages, handwritten. 2) The retained carbon reply by Fleming advising the reader her enquiry has been passed to book expert Percy Muir. Typed letter, hole-punched at margin. 3) Brief typed letter to Percy Muir, apologising for enclosing the 'daft letter' of enquiry. On Mitre Court heading (Fleet Street), signed 'Ian'. 4) The retained carbon appraisal of the book from Percy Muir to the enquirer. Typed letter, hole-punched at margin. 5) Longer typed letter to Percy Muir mentioning the Book Collector, John [Hayward] and a trip to Jamaica [he owned a property 'Goldeneye' on Jamaica's North Shore]. Mitre Court heading (Fleet Street), signed 'affectionately Ian'. A fine correspondence between the 'James Bond' creator Ian Fleming and his close friend and colleague Percy Muir -Muir was a respected bibliophile who assembled Fleming's important scientific library, and both men sat on the editorial board of The Book Collector journal which was published by Fleming's Queen Anne Press. Fleming was godfather to Muir's daughter Helen. In the James Bond novel 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' (published just before the date of this correspondence) a character is named in Percy's honour; the British Agent 'Alexander Muir', Head of Station Z (Zurich), fittingly appears with a signal room hidden behind a book-lined wall.         On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Proof and Inscribed copy

London: Jonathan Cape. 1963, 1963. 2 copies from the collection of Aubrey Forshaw; a 1963 first impression inscribed by the author, together with an annotated proof copy [issued 1962] in the proof-only dustwrapper. The hardcover volume is in very good condition; dustwrapper a little rubbed and nicekd. With a presentation inscription to the flyleaf; "To Aubrey / who wrote some of it! / From Ian". The inscription relates to the passages corrected by Forshaw, particularly regarding motoring matters, as found within his proof copy of this title. The corrected softcover proof is in very good condition; the oversized dustwrapper has a few nicks and marks, with some creasing to the unsupprted area along the top edge. Both the book and jacket differ considerably to the published version. Laid in is a typed letter from Jonathan Cape chairman Michael Howard (drafted by Valerie Kettley) to Aubrey Forshaw, dated 10th December 1962 it reads "I finally got Ian to adopt a more intelligible variant of the offending back axle passage in OHMSS and I have checked that all the literals you marked have been corrected in the press proof. I have an idea you said you wanted your proof back and therefore return it herewith..." All three items are housed in a purpose-made quarter leather clamshell box. Provenance: Aubrey Forshaw, Managing Director of Pan Books, publisher of the James Bond novels in paperback and Ian Fleming's expert for technical information concerning James Bond's cars. It was in this respect that he was asked by Fleming to read the proof of On Her Majesty's Secret Service and correct any errors. "the offending back axle passage" referred to in Michael Howard's letter appears on page 23, with Aubrey's corrections in pencil to the margins. Further corrections, suggestions and typographical errors appear in the margins elsewhere, all of which are adopted within the first edition text. An outstanding presentation with additional manuscript material relating to the tenth James Bond novel. References: Gilbert, pages 354-356, 645-6. Gilbert A11a (1.1).

        Horse Under Water.

Jonathan Cape 1963 - UNCORRECTED PROOF COPY, light creasing at top corner of a handful of leaves, pp. 255, foolscap 8vo, original green printed wrappers, a little rubbed to edges with some very light soiling, light foxing to textblock edges and at head of rear free endpaper, ink numeral at head of flyleaf, original proof dustjacket with a little cracking and discolouration to laminate edges, head of backstrip panel a touch frayed, very good The author’s second book. The scarce proof dustjacket differs to that of the published version in a few notable respects: the various ephemeral items beneath the skull were felt to be too many and the image on the first edition is duly less cluttered, the publisher’s blurb on the rear cover was changed, whilst the front flap of the proof dustjacket carries an amusing image of Deighton observing the ‘high-speed dressing’ of two Royal Navy frogmen.         The Feminine Mystique.

      W. W. Norton, New York 1963 - First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original half cloth. Fine in a very good dust jacket with some light fading to the spine. Signed by Betty Friedan on the title page. First editions are rare, especially signed. The Feminine Mystique begins with an introduction describing what Friedan called "the problem that has no name"—the widespread unhappiness of women in the 1950s and early 1960s. It discusses the lives of several housewives from around the United States who were unhappy despite living in material comfort and being happily married with fine children. "[The Feminine Mystique] now feels both revolutionary and utterly contemporary. Four decades later, millions of individual transformations later, there is still so much to learn from this book. Those who think of it as solely a feminist manifesto ought to revisit its pages to get a sense of the magnitude of the research and reporting Friedan undertook" (Anna Quindlen).       London: Robert Hale, 1963. Original artwork study for the dust jacket front panel and spine panel of the UK edition of James M. Cain's "Mignon," published by Robert Hale in 1963. Some notes in holograph pencil on the verso of the former indicate that pale red, deep yellow, and medium deep blue are needed to flesh out the design, and a notation of "script pen no. 3-1/2" has been made just below that. Artwork and overlay both Near Fine. Included with the artwork is a copy of the first edition that resulted from it, Near Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket.

Fifteen letters and drawings by CharlotteÕs Web illustrator Garth Williams to his daughters Jessica and Estyn, 1962-1968; 5 TLS, 2 ALS and 4 birthday cards with drawings to Jessica, 1 TLS to Estyn, and 3 TLS to both; together with 4 ink drawings: ÒYoo HooÉTarzan!Ó, ÒEstynÕs Shadow,Ó ÒJessicat,Ó and ÒMy favourite Bottles.Ó

      - GARTH WILLIAMS: LETTERS TO HIS DAUGHTERS Together with: 3 black and white snapshots of new wife Alicia and son Juan Miguel; 1Ó x 2Ó each. During this period, Williams was living in Guanajuato, Mexico with Alicia and their Juan Miguel. He signed his letters ÒPap?,Ó ÒGarth,Ó or in one instance, ÒSam Crabgrass.Ó Williams sends updates about his health, work and travel schedule, shares anecdotes about his childhood, and, most frequently, expels fatherly advice (especially to the younger Jessica). He often writes rhyming or nonsensical sentences, and in one letter, writes phonetically in a Cockney accent (ÒOwÕs me ole chum?Ó July 1, 1963). Jessica and Estyn were both teenagers during this time. In his first letter, Williams sends a brief description of his new wife Ð thirty years his junior Ð and son, ÒShe was born in Guanajuato in 1942 on Oct. 24th. Alicia. Alice in english. She is 5 foot 3 inches tall. weight 100 lbs. Dark brown eyes, black hair. Her son is Juan Miguel. He is 6 months old nowÓ (June 5, 1962). Williams sends letters filled with fatherly advice, and sometimes shares stories about his boyhood. In one letter to Jessica, Williams informs her about boys: I see from recent letters you have written that perhaps you will be like everyone else, and get mixed up with other people; not just girls, but even with those horrible creatures Ð boys. When you get mixed up with boys, you often get mixed with girls, and mixed up altogether; because it is like measles-of-the-brain, or, mumps-of-the-thumper (heart). (February 20, 1963) He goes on to share a long anecdote about when he has his first clash of the sexes Ð at age 10 Ð with two neighborhood girls named Betty and Pat, who were sisters, and concludes with the realization that ÒWhen you feel love (which you may not be) Ð no advice is any good, even when you know it is good advice), and suggests that Estyn maybe able to help her too. A couple months later, Williams writes a similar letter to Estyn, though this time, his advice is about morals: ÒYou have to work out a code to live by, when you are living by your rules you can say you are being moral. When not Ð immoral or unmoralÓ (April 29, 1963). He also tells Estyn that morals change, and that ÒWhat USED to be bad is now OK,Ó and gives the following example: My mother did all the wrong things. She smoked a pipe, rode a bicycle, wore bloomers, and ended up being chained to the railings in Hyde Park with a Mrs Pankhurst when they wanted to get the right to vote for women etc etc. Most people considered her unmoral in her behaviour. She was an art student in Paris for five years; Ð pretty dreadfulÉ. (ibid.) In a long undated letter to Jessica, Williams responds to her questions about God, admitting, ÒI donÕt know any more than you doÓ (n.d.). The explains that the topic is vast and unknowable, but suggests studying about religion and recommends that she read Santayana. It is clear that sometimes Williams masks his concern with humor, or downplays serious discussions. When he found out that Jessica had started smoking, he wrote her explaining how her genes make the habit especially dangerous for her: My reason for warning you is Ð you inherit from your mother the same tendencies. See a doctor about it. Have him check you for bad circulation. People with bad circulation cant smoke. They feel colder than everyone else. Their fat does not help. They are lousy bed fellows with far too many covers and icy feetÓ (May 4, 1967). He suggests that Jessica ÒTake peppermint, Brighton Rock, Kandy Kisses, Humbugs Lollypops Ð anything. Create a new craze Ð eating candy instead of smoking. Create a distinctive image Ð the girl who chews lemon rind. UniqueÓ (ibid.). WilliamsÕs drawings usually illustrate something about Jessica or Estyn, or something that Williams had seen. His card to Jessica for her October 1964 birthday shows her sleeping in bed, with a full stomach and a candle stuck in her belly-button, a pair of elaborate red boots discarde [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Universal Unified Field Law and The Law of Universal Creation of Mass-Energy *SIGNED BY AUTHOR*

Universal Science Foundation, Phoenix, AZ, 1963, Hard Cover, Book Condition: Good+, First Edition, SignedSize: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall, 281 pages. Author signed and inscribed this copy to John Dumont upon front free endpaper. "In this presentation, it will be shown that all components within every system, including all primary measurable forms of mass-energy and all complex components derived therefrom, function perpetually in accordance with the laws of motion in absolute freely-moving-body environments. It will also be shown that the bonding forces of any structural frame of any particle are nothing more and nothing less than the stability that results from pure vector mechanics in equilibria, functioning as freely-moving, composite frames, and that the stability is conserved through the instant mutual exchange of kinetic-energy-momenta... Therefore, all events should be considered purely as mechanical phenomena, and should never be considered as general or abstract phenomena." - from Introduction. Includes over a dozen black and white figures. Unmarked. Moderate wear. Binding intact. Gilt lettering upon navy backstrip and front board moderately rubbed but remains legible. A sound copy.
