Selected Writings I: Phonological Studies--INSCRIBED with collection of letters

Mouton & Co. 1962 - Edges quite soiled, otherwise a vg copy in edge worn jacket. Inscribed thusly: "To Ellen Weise, Friend and Collaborator, with Roman Jakobson's eternal gratitude". This collection includes eight signed, handwritten letters to the same recipient, sent from the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Sciences at Stamford. Some are brief directives; others cover several sprawling pages. Mostly the letters concern professional matters--Weise was evidently holding down the Jakobson fort at Harvard while the master was on leave in California-- but often contain endearments as well. Weise was charged with preparing/editing/writing(?) several papers, and in addition to the letters, this lot contains a mimeograph of additions to Jakobson's bibliography, which he has inscribed, "To Eppy/who helped me to write most of these studies/Roman". Lastly, there is a photocopied essay, to which Jakobson has added Weise's name in front of his, as though she was the principal author. An illuminating little archive from a major figure in twentieth century thought. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Octavo, original staple-bound blue printed paper wrappers; pp. 84. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $2750.First edition of this groundbreaking early paper by the co-winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Economics, Lloyd Shapley.“This year's prize-winning work encompasses a theoretical framework for analyzing resource allocation, as well as empirical studies and actual redesign of real-world institutions such as labor-market clearinghouses and school admissions procedures. The foundations for the theoretical framework were laid in 1962, when David Gale and Lloyd Shapley published a mathematical inquiry into a certain class of allocation problems [the present paper]… The person chiefly responsible for the development of cooperative game theory is Lloyd Shapley… In collaboration with D. Gale, H. Scarf and M. Shubik, Shapley created the theory of matching markets. Launching the theory, Gale and Shapley (1962) expressed the hope that one day it would have practical applications. This hope has been fulfilled by the emerging literature on market design” (Scientific Background on the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel [commonly known as the Nobel Prize in Economics] 2012). Had Gale lived, it is virtually certain he would have shared the Nobel with Shapley and Alvin E. Roth. Owner inkstamp to front wrapper.Spine and front wrapper lightly tanned. Near-fine condition.

While Gene Sarazen and Byron Nelson are filming one of "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf" matches at the Hague in the Netherlands, Sarazen pens a letter to golf promoter, Fred Corcoran.

The Netherlands, June 10, 1962. 6.25" X 8.25". "Autograph Letter Signed, "Gene", three conjoined pages , 6.25" X 8.25", on Hotel Wittebrug [the Netherlands] stationery, June 10, 1962. Addressed to Fred [Corcoran]. In full, "Hear [sic] we are at the Hague. Today is our thirty eight [sic] Anniversary, we are telling any one hear [sic] / [Byron] Nelson arrived he is playing the Course. This is the toughest course Ive seen in Europe, if they get any kind of wind, it will mean very high scores. / Nelson is going off to Paris for an exhobition [sic] and then to Geneva, Switzerland where he has friends. He loves this place, who wouldn [sic], Fred this would be a great place for Canada Cup Matches, But I don't know where you would get a crowd. The course would be very fitting. / We read Red Smith everyday in the New York Trib, European copy. Snead led your Tour for the first two rounds. / Mary is fine. She is taking me to church again, I am batting a thousand over hear [sic]. / I wrote to Biggar about having a Press Party at Glen Eagle, and that you should come over to handle it. I haven't heard. / I am getting Restless. I hate playing golf on week ends, to [sic] many golfers. Well that's all for now. My best to Nancy / Cherrio / Gene." Staple holes at upper blank margin and center fold, else very fine condition. Gene Sarazen hosted the landmark golf series, "Shell's Wonderful World of Golf", a televised series of golf "challenge matches" between pairs of professional golfers. It started as a pre-recorded one hour program on Sunday afternoons and it included travelogue-style information about the host's country and conversations with the players between shots. Byron Nelson played Gerry DeWit at the Haagsche Golf Club in the Netherlands, referred to as "the Hague", a match that was televised for the first time in March 1963. It is most likely during the filming of this match between Nelson and DeWit that Sarazen penned this letter to Fred Corcoran, golf promoter extraordinaire. Byron Nelson said of the "Shell" series, "The show gave the game of golf a very attractive exposure - the travelogues alone were worth the price of admission - that went a long way toward promoting, and changing the image of the game into what is now a major sport in this country, and the world." Not only was Gene Sarazen a great golfer, he was an inventor as well; He invented the modern sand wedge. According to the World Golf Hall of Fame, the idea for its design was the result of noticing how an airplane's tail adjusted during flight while Sarazen was taking a flying lesson from Howard Hughes in 1931. Sarazen was the first golfer to win the career grand slam and was among the first to be inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. His "Shot Heard 'Round the World" at the 1935 Masters (a final-round hole-out from 225 yards with a 4-wood for a double-eagle on No.15) is one of the most famous shots in golf history."

The Night Before Christmas with two original watercolors.

Worcester, MA: St. Onge, Achille J. (1962). 28ff. First issue. Illustrated in full color by Tasha Tudor. Fine in gilt-titled red leather, with a pictorial dust jacket, which shows a bit of faint creasing and edgewear. A.e.g. Together with The Night Before Christmas. One of 1,200 copies in the rare gilt-stamped, brick-colored cloth binding. Some bleeding from cloth onto endpapers and loss of gilt on edges, otherwise fine. Also together with two original watercolors by Tasha Tudor: the illustration showing the children "snug in their beds," and the frontispiece and title-page spread with the holly borders. The title page shows the title as "A Visit from St. Nicholas" printed by the "Jenny Wren Press" instead of Achille J. St. Onge, as published. "Jenny Wren" was a well-loved character created by Tudor for stories she told to her children. "Jenny Wren" acted as the Editress of a series of magazines called The Bouquet, which were created by Tudor and shared within her family, until the Christmas 1962 issue was published by Tudor's newly established Jenny Wren Press in 1989. All housed together in a buckram and leather slipcase. (Massmann VIII; Tudor bibliography N27 & N28). (3 5/8 by 2 5/8; 93x67mm).

        The Snowy Day.

The Viking Press, New York 1962 - First edition of The Snowy Day, which is considered "one of the most important American books of the 20th century" (Diefendorf, ed. The New York Public Library's Books of the Century). Oblong quarto, original pictorial cloth as issued. Fine in a near fine first-issue dust jacket, with the prerequisite $3.00 price on the dust jacket and no mention of this title winning the Caldecott Medal (the second and subsequent printings mention this on the front flap of the jacket) and without patterned interior front and rear flaps that mimicked the snowflake patterns of the endpapers in later printings. Although the Caldecott Medal is affixed to the dust jacket cover, this was due to the common practice of book sellers who adhered the sticker for marketing purposes after the Caldecott was awarded. First printings in the original dust jacket are of the utmost rarity. After serving in World War II, Ezra Jack Keats returned to New York and started a career in illustration, working first in the comic industry, and then working for such publications as Reader's Digest, The New York Times Book Review, and Collier's. In the 1950s Keats started illustrating dust jackets, and when one book cover caught the eye of an editor of youth literature, Keats was soon commissioned to illustrate children's books. Keats started solely as an illustrator for the work of other authors. But he soon observed that few children's books showcased an African-American or other minority child as the main character. Published in 1962, The Snowy Day was the first book Keats both authored and illustrated, and was a milestone for featuring the first African-American protagonist in a full-color picture book. "None of the manuscripts I'd been illustrating featured any black kids--except for token blacks in the background. My book would have him there simply because he should have been there all along." It went on to win the 1963 Caldecott Medal, and has remained a deeply loved and profoundly influential book. Based on a 2007 online poll, the National Education Association named the book one of its Teachers Top 100 Books for Children. In 2012 it was ranked number five among the Top 100 Picture Books in a survey published by School Library Journal. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Lives and Times of Archy & Mehitabel

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Company, Inc, 1962. As. Hardcover. Very Good/good. Herriman, George. White wrote a 7-page introduction to this edition [HallB8], xxvii-xxiv, that is missing. Small typed note, laid in, signed by White "EBW," indicates that "My introduction has been clipped from this book. I probably used it as copy when I was putting together 'The Second Tree from the Corner.'" This would make sense in that "Second Tree was published in 1954, but in 1952 White also published "Charlotte's Web." From the Estate of Joel (1930-1997) & Allene White. xv, 477 pp. 8vo. Dust jacket has light chips and tears, spine is faded from sunning, beginning to split at lower left hinge along spine, price clipped, now in mylar cover. Black cloth boards with gray printed title block on spine. Clean, crisp copy.

Bilbo. En Hobbits Äventyr [The Hobbit.] I Översättning av Britt G. Hallqvist och med Illustrationer av Tove Jansson.

Rabén & Sjögren 1962 - FIRST JANSSON EDITION, 10 full-page drawings with numerous smaller drawings throughout text, pp. 308, 8vo, original quarter green cloth with colour-printed Jansson illustration to upper board, a touch of fading almost exclusively to lower board and none affecting Jansson image, backstrip lettered in gilt and a touch faded with gentle rubbing at ends, very good. An attractive edition - this is an excellent copy of a book whose scarcity can be attributed to both author and illustrator being immensely collectable separately. Given the importance of the Nordic influence on Tolkien's work, there is something reciprocal about the foremost illustrator of the region turning her hand to one of his most enduring works - and the results are delightful.
