Typed letter signed. WITH: Typed memorandum

1962. Signed. KENNEDY, John F. Typed letter signed. WITH: Typed memorandum. Washington, DC: September 21, 1962. Two items. Typed letter signed: One page, quarto, White House stationery, 7 by 9 inches, typed and signed on recto. Typed memorandum: one page, White House stationery, 7 by 9 inches, typed on recto and signed secretarially. $5500.Typed letter signed by Kennedy as President to James Webb, second administrator of NASA, expressing appreciation for his work on negotiating with the University of Pittsburgh on a Space Research Center.James E. Webb (1906-92) was a Marine Corps pilot before attending law school and entering public service. His positions included Undersecretary of State and Director of the Bureau of the Budget, before Kennedy appointed him in February, 1961 as the second administrator of NASA. ""The post was considered a nonglamorous backwater in the Kennedy Administration, and more than a dozen other persons had turned down the appointmentÂ… Webb accepted, however, after being personally requested by President John KennedyÂ… Shortly after Webb took over NASA, unexpected events caused President Kennedy to give NASA a major role in his administration. In April 1961 the Soviet Union scored a technological victory by sending the first astronaut into orbit around the earthÂ… In order to boost national morale, Kennedy made a speech to Congress on 25 May 1961, in which he announced that the United States would embark on a policy designed to send a man to the moon by the end of the decade. The administration's commitment to a manned moon shot increased NASA's annual budget from $1 billion to more than $5 billion during the mid-1960s. Webb found himself heading a project whose scope and magnitude was comparable to the wartime Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb. While presiding over the expansion of the agency, Webb helped guide its major decisions: choice of the Cape Kennedy launching site; development of the two-man Gemini project to precede the three-man Apollo moon shots; and selection of technology and contractors for the booster rockets, command modules, and earth station equipment"" (ANB). Indeed, Webb oversaw the first manned launches in the Mercury through Gemini programs, coordinated all the various research centers and facilitated the creation of the Manned Spacecraft Center (later the Johnson Space Center). Such was his untiring advocacy for Congressional support of NASA that President Johnson referred to him as ""Mr. Space."" Webb stepped down in October, 1968, just before the first manned Apollo flights.Kennedy's letter, dated 21 September 1962, reads, ""Dear Jim: Governor Lawrence of Pennsylvania advised me of the progress of your negotiations with the University of Pittsburgh on the Space Research Center. I am glad to hear that you are working on it. He spoke highly of the members of your staff, with whom Chancellor Litchfield and his board have been working. Sincerely, [signed] John F. Kennedy."" Accompanying this letter is a typed memorandum, dated August 15, 1962 and signed secretarially, reads: ""Memorandum for James E. Webb. I notice an article in the Washington Post this morning that the subcommittee is considering appropriations for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration that had been put at from $50,000,000 to $60,000,000, but that the final figure may reach $123,000,000. Is this correct? Who are the architects and the builders and under whose control is Space Center building to be put up. Would appreciate your comment on this."" Fine condition.

        Dead Cert

Michael Joseph, London 1962 - This is a Good Only Copy of this Book in Publisher's maroon cloth with gilt lettered title to the spine,in a Fine Dust-Jacket that is unrestored and there are NO chips or tears to the extremities. There is just a touch of tone fading to the head and tail of spine.Price clipped with dust-jacket design by Trevor Denning. We believe that the d/j is a 3rd Issue one with the title of 'Nerve' advertised on the rear panel. The book has some faults in that there are tape remnant markings to the front and rear pastedowns and the front and rear endpapers also, with one former owner's inscription to the front pastedown. There is some heavy age toning to the fore-edge of the book and it's lightly spotted.Internally the text block is decent with some sporadic foxing spots noted to pages 141-147 and there is staining to the page margins noted on pages numbers 27-30.So there we are collectable First Edition Book in a later 3rd Impression Dust-Jacket we think.8vo 206pp [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Saint Francis.

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1962. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Translated from the Greek by Peter A. Bien. Signed by the translator on the front free endpaper, "To John "Who knows, perhaps God is simply the search for God." Peter Bien." Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. The protean Greek author Nikos Kazantzakis retells the story of the most beloved of saints--Francis of Assisi, who permanently changed the way people think about following God. Drawing on the traditional stories of the saint's life, Kazantzakis infuses the tale with a fervent vision that is uniquely his own, highlighting the saint's heroic single-mindedness in the face of extreme physical and spiritual suffering. He portrays the saint as a great lover and inspiring leader who embraced radical poverty in the face of many obstacles and temptations while achieving a way of life marked by epic generosity. "The novel is strong, deep, and moving. . . . a penetration into the mystery and wonder of life" (San Francisco Chronicle).

On publication in 1962, Time magazine called Cuckoo's Nest ""a roar of protest against middlebrow society's Rules and the invisible Rulers who enforce them.""         The Spy Who Loved Me.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1962. First edition of the tenth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Peter To Cheer him up! From Ian." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Dust jacket art by Richard Chopping. Housed in a full morocco clamshell box, the front panel mimicking the dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed and inscribed by Ian Fleming. In light of the novel's immense presence as a classic thriller, it's amusing to learn that it was at first poorly received. The novel was banned in several countries due to its heightened sexual writing. The reception was so bad that Fleming wrote to Michael Howard of the Jonathan Cape publishing company to explain why he wrote the book: "I had become increasingly surprised to find my thrillers, which were designed for an adult audience, being read in schools, and that young people were making a hero out of James Bond ... So it crossed my mind to write a cautionary tale about Bond, to put the record straight in the minds particularly of younger readers ... the experiment has obviously gone very much awry" (Chancellor 2005). Upon Fleming's request, no reprints were made until after his death in 1964.

        Expositions and Developments

1962. First Edition . Signed. STRAVINSKY, Igor. CRAFT, Robert. Expositions and Developments. Garden City, New York: Doubleday, 1962. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $2500.First edition, warmly inscribed on the half title to neighbor and longtime friend Miranda Levy, ""To my dear Miranda, with love and kisses from I Stravinsky, Nov /63.""""Few 20th-century composers enjoyed international influence and importance equal to that of Stravinsky. This influence exists in the materials of his music and in his rigorous search for an individual soundÂ… For many years he was, with Schoenberg, one of the two unofficial poles of Western music"" (ANB). In these conversations with his protégé, conductor Robert Craft (who coauthored seven books with him), Stravinsky discusses his childhood in St. Petersburg, Russia; recalls such musical luminaries as Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov; reflects on the intersection of music and modern recording technology; and discusses scores including The Firebird, The Rite of Spring and his then-new work, The Flood. Illustrated with eight pages of black-and-white photographs. Inscribed to Miranda Levy, a founding member of the Santa Fe Opera and wife of pioneering television director Ralph Levy (whose credits include directing the original I Love Lucy pilot episode). Miranda ""met Stravinsky at the Aspen, Colorado Music Festival in 1950, then hosted him on a New Mexico visitÂ… [When] the composer let it be known he was interested in D.H. LawrenceÂ… [Miranda] introduced Stravinsky to LawrenceÂ’s widowÂ… [Miranda and Ralph Levy] moved to Los Angeles and bought a house less than a block from Stravinsky'sÂ… Just as she had once kept Santa Feans up to date on the latest news and gossip, she now regaled Igor and Vera Stravinsky with daily updates on movie studio gossip"" (Albquerque Journal).Dust jacket with light rubbing to spine ends and edges. A very nearly fine inscribed presentation/association copy.

Four typed and signed notes and letters.

      N. p., July-September 1962. - Four letters with their envelopes. 4to and oblong 8vo. Altogether 6 pp. on 6 ff. All addressed to the Russian journalist and poet Igor Mikhailusenko (b. 1932) concerning Russia and the cold war: "[.] I believe that the two German States are equally dangerous. Western Germany is fanatically obsessed with the cold war and Eastern Germany is a cruel, vicious tyranny, capable of keeping its population within its borders only with barbed wire and machine guns. I think that the Government of the Soviet Union and the Government of the United States have a responsibility to come to an agreement which reflects the interests of peace and not the interests of either German State. I think that the problem of West Berlin could be solved in several ways. One would be for a united Berlin to become the seat of the United Nations, another would be for West and East Berlin to become a neutral city under the jurisdiction of the United Nations, and another would be for Berlin to become autonomous, protected through agreement by both East and West [.]" (from the letter of September 5, 1962). - Together with a flyer for Russell's Committee of 100 mass sit-down, originally scheduled for September 9, 1962, but canceled for lack of support. - Generally good, sizes vary.

        Requiem

1962. First Edition . COCTEAU, Jean. Le Requiem. (Paris): Gallimard, (1962). Small quarto, original printed paper wrappers, glassine, uncut and unopened. $3000.First trade edition of this collection of poems, CocteauÂ’s final book, published just a year before his death. This copy warmly inscribed at length by Cocteau and signed by him with his characteristic star flourish to his good friend Maurice Goudeket, who was married to CocteauÂ’s dear friend Colette until her death in 1954.Above the half title, Cocteau has penned the name “Maurice Goudeket.” Below he writes, “Mes amis très cheres, jÂ’ai à peine envoyer ce fleuve des morts dans lÂ’autre bonheur. Avec tendresse, Jean.” In 1920, following publication of her succès de scandale, the novel Chéri, Colette entered the world of modern poetry and painting revolving around Jean Cocteau, who was later her neighbor in Jardins du Palais-Royal. They became great friends, and over the years, both often referred to each other, directly and indirectly, in their books. In 1935, Colette married Maurice Goudeket, whom she described as a “saint,” and who cared for her during her later years. She died in 1954.Goudeket remarried after ColetteÂ’s death. His second wife, the actress (and widow of couturier Lucien Lelong) Sanda Dancovici, bore Goudeket a child when he was 71 years old, about two years before the publication of Le Requiem. Perhaps this is the “bonheur” referenced by Cocteau in his inscription. Cocteau wrote the poems contained in Le Requiem while convalescing from a severe hemorrhage. “Cette perte de sang,” he writes in the Preface, “mÂ’en lassait juste assez pour vivre et pour faire la planche sur le fleuve des morts.” The entire book deals with his hallucinatory near-death experience and his drawn-out recovery, which perhaps also contributes to the somewhat apologetic tone of his inscription. Issued at the same time as 125 numbered copies printed on hand-made paper. Text in French. Small perforated stamp “SP” to margin of final signature and rear free endpaper.Very nearly fine condition, entirely uncut and unopened, warmly inscribed by Cocteau to his close friend.
