        Naked Lunch

New York, NY : Grove Press, Inc., 1962. First American Edition, First Printing. Hardcover. Good/Near Fine/Poor. "And only after the first shock does one realize that what Burroughs is writing about is not only the destruction of depraved men by their drug lust, but the destruction of all men by their consuming addictions...Burroughs is not only serious in his intent, but he is a writer of great power and artistic integrity engaged in a profoundly meaningful search for true values."(John Ciardi quoted on front flap) Naked Lunch is one of the foundational texts of the Beat Generation, & an unclassifiable, pathbreaking work onto itself; the most well-known, notorious novel by the great William S. Burroughs. This is the first American hardcover edition, stated first printing, published during March of 1962 by Barney Rosset's fabled Grove Press in a first printing run of 3500 copies (Joe Maynard & Barry Miles, William S. Burroughs: A Bibliography,1953-1973, University Press of Virginia, 1978; A2b, pgs. 10-11). WSB has hand-signed his name just below his printed name on the title page of this copy. From the collection of Ken Mikolowski, the esteemed poet-printer-publisher-professor who with his late wife Ann founded & conducted the legendary Alternative Press in Detroit. Beginning in the 1960s, the Press issued works by many Beat Generation/San Francisco Renaissance/Black Mountain & other luminaries, including WSB's fellow founding father of the Beats, Allen Ginsberg. Among the rarest versions of the iconic WSB classic, further enriched with this signature & provenance. Book in good to near-fine condition with mild, sparse rubbing & wear to front, back covers & spine; small spots of residue forming a partial rectangle near lower left corner of front cover likely the result of a removed sticker; short bump-indentation with splitting of board to same corner; smaller bumps to other corners of covers; fading & spotting of blue-grey dye at upper text block; tiny spots at lower & esp. side text blocks. Interior very fine except for staining at edges of front & rear endpaper leaves; very slight bump-curving to corners of a few other page leaves. Dust Jacket mostly intact but in poor condition with moderate-to-significant rubbing & wear to front, back covers & spine; creases, chips & short tears at all edges & corners; tape repairs at & near spine & corner edges; small but significant loss of front cover under tape at lower right corner of front cover. Signed by William S. Burroughs.

Typed letter signed. WITH: Typed memorandum

1962. Signed. KENNEDY, John F. Typed letter signed. WITH: Typed memorandum. Washington, DC: September 21, 1962. Two items. Typed letter signed: One page, quarto, White House stationery, 7 by 9 inches, typed and signed on recto. Typed memorandum: one page, White House stationery, 7 by 9 inches, typed on recto and signed secretarially. $5500.Typed letter signed by Kennedy as President to James Webb, second administrator of NASA, expressing appreciation for his work on negotiating with the University of Pittsburgh on a Space Research Center.James E. Webb (1906-92) was a Marine Corps pilot before attending law school and entering public service. His positions included Undersecretary of State and Director of the Bureau of the Budget, before Kennedy appointed him in February, 1961 as the second administrator of NASA. ""The post was considered a nonglamorous backwater in the Kennedy Administration, and more than a dozen other persons had turned down the appointmentÂ… Webb accepted, however, after being personally requested by President John KennedyÂ… Shortly after Webb took over NASA, unexpected events caused President Kennedy to give NASA a major role in his administration. In April 1961 the Soviet Union scored a technological victory by sending the first astronaut into orbit around the earthÂ… In order to boost national morale, Kennedy made a speech to Congress on 25 May 1961, in which he announced that the United States would embark on a policy designed to send a man to the moon by the end of the decade. The administration's commitment to a manned moon shot increased NASA's annual budget from $1 billion to more than $5 billion during the mid-1960s. Webb found himself heading a project whose scope and magnitude was comparable to the wartime Manhattan Project, which developed the atomic bomb. While presiding over the expansion of the agency, Webb helped guide its major decisions: choice of the Cape Kennedy launching site; development of the two-man Gemini project to precede the three-man Apollo moon shots; and selection of technology and contractors for the booster rockets, command modules, and earth station equipment"" (ANB). Indeed, Webb oversaw the first manned launches in the Mercury through Gemini programs, coordinated all the various research centers and facilitated the creation of the Manned Spacecraft Center (later the Johnson Space Center). Such was his untiring advocacy for Congressional support of NASA that President Johnson referred to him as ""Mr. Space."" Webb stepped down in October, 1968, just before the first manned Apollo flights.Kennedy's letter, dated 21 September 1962, reads, ""Dear Jim: Governor Lawrence of Pennsylvania advised me of the progress of your negotiations with the University of Pittsburgh on the Space Research Center. I am glad to hear that you are working on it. He spoke highly of the members of your staff, with whom Chancellor Litchfield and his board have been working. Sincerely, [signed] John F. Kennedy."" Accompanying this letter is a typed memorandum, dated August 15, 1962 and signed secretarially, reads: ""Memorandum for James E. Webb. I notice an article in the Washington Post this morning that the subcommittee is considering appropriations for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration that had been put at from $50,000,000 to $60,000,000, but that the final figure may reach $123,000,000. Is this correct? Who are the architects and the builders and under whose control is Space Center building to be put up. Would appreciate your comment on this."" Fine condition.

        Dead Cert

Michael Joseph, London 1962 - This is a Good Only Copy of this Book in Publisher's maroon cloth with gilt lettered title to the spine,in a Fine Dust-Jacket that is unrestored and there are NO chips or tears to the extremities. There is just a touch of tone fading to the head and tail of spine.Price clipped with dust-jacket design by Trevor Denning. We believe that the d/j is a 3rd Issue one with the title of 'Nerve' advertised on the rear panel. The book has some faults in that there are tape remnant markings to the front and rear pastedowns and the front and rear endpapers also, with one former owner's inscription to the front pastedown. There is some heavy age toning to the fore-edge of the book and it's lightly spotted.Internally the text block is decent with some sporadic foxing spots noted to pages 141-147 and there is staining to the page margins noted on pages numbers 27-30.So there we are collectable First Edition Book in a later 3rd Impression Dust-Jacket we think.8vo 206pp [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
