Dead Cert - a very good, flat signed first edition, first printing

Michael Joseph 1962 - Published by Michael Joseph (London) in 1962, this is a very good, signed first edition, first printing of the first novel by Dick Francis. The book is in very good plus condition. It is square and remains tightly bound. The boards are fresh and clean. The gilt lettering to the spine is bright and faultless. There is a tiny nick to the bottom of the front board and a small almost indiscernible amount of colour deterioration to the very bottom edge of the spine. The edge of the text block has some foxing and is age toned. The pages to the book have browned universally. Mr Francis has flat signed the front title page in his usual bold and slightly slanted style. The unclipped dust jacket is the first state and shows the correct price of 15/-. It is complete with little if any edge wear. It too has yellowed and the publishers name has faded from the spine – as is usually the case with this particular book. There are no repairs or touch ups and the dust jacket is now protected by an acid free archival sleeve. A desperately difficult book to find flat signed in first edition. Auctions and websites are littered with copies which have book-plates, tipped in signatures and dedications. This is an honest to goodness flat signed copy of one of the most difficult modern first editions to find in very good, collectible condition. The images you see are high resolution scans of the actual item. Please request further scans if you wish. We will be happy to oblige. The book will be dispatched via the Royal Mail in protective packaging. We do not charge postage to buyers within the UK. Those from outside the UK are asked to contact us before purchasing. We offer a 7 day no quibble full refund if the item is not as described and shown. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

DEATHS FOR THE LADIES: And Other Disasters

New York: Putnam Sons, (1962).. New York:: Putnam Sons. (1962). First edition, paperwraps issue, of this "run of poems, short poems, very short poems, and turns of prose." From the collection of Adeline Lubell-Naiman. INSCRIBED with an elaborate drawing "The critic pursued by a theme [large scribbled drawing spanning inside front cover and first leaf] Love / (that is to say lustility [sic] and housefection [sic] to Lucky and Adeline) / Norman." This paperwraps issue came out at the same time as the small hardback printing. Very good. Adeline Lubell-Naiman was the editor instrumental in the eventual publication of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. In 1946, while an editor at Little, Brown, Lubell-Naiman convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, which she talked up to her publisher. Unfortunately, she was also the one to suggest historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript--he recommended not publishing. But Mailer submitted it to Rinehart, who published the book in 1948. Over the years, Lubell-Naiman remained close friends with Mailer and his wives. In the summer of 1968 she even played the role of "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college in Mailer's film "Maidstone" (Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center website).

        THE POINTS OF MY COMPASS

New York Harper & Row , 1962. New York Harper & Row , 1962. First edition. Original black quarter cloth over grey boards with gilt title to the spine in (supplied) dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed to friend and fellow author, Elizabeth Taylor, on the front end paper, "Elizabeth love and a Merry Christmas Katherine and Andy / North Brooklin, Maine". A very good copy, with a faded spine which has a couple of internal repaired closed tears to the joints and a little wear to the spine ends. In a very good dustwrapper. Elizabeth Taylor, the critically regarded British novelist, described by Kingsley Amis as "One of the best English novelists born this century", whose writing career was forced into relative obscurity as a consequence of coinciding with the rise of her more famous namesake, the American actress. Her style was in the mould of Ivy Compton-Burnett, Barbara Pym and Elizabeth Bowen, and has only recently been recognised as one of the important authors of the twentieth century. She wrote twelve novels and a clutch of story collections, most of which were originally published in The New Yorker, where E.B. White's wife was her first editor. Taylor rarely travelled to American so did not often meet White but they became good friends via a long and frequent correspondence.

(Oh luz! El mundo canta. / Cae la luna. El viento.)» pp. 14 Stampato dall'Arte Grafica Bartolomé U. I don't see how these nurses can fail to win if Selwyn puts his foot down as firmly as he did with the dockers

, 1962. 1962. Sheet size: 192 × 140 mm. Pen and black ink with blue pencil crayon on wove paper. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 23 May 1962, and with pencil reproduction instructions recto. The Macmillan government's "pay pause" continued to sour labour relations. A month later Selwyn Lloyd, the Chancellor, was to lose his job in the "night of the long knives." The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

Autographed Letter Signed on "Three Stooges" stationery

, 1962. 1962. unbound. 2 pages (front and back), 8.5 x 6 inches, no place, June 8, 1962 -- a genuinely friendly letter to a fan in which Howard shares personal details (such as where each of the Stooges live), in part: "...I live Los Angeles, Larry lives in Hollywood and Curly Joe lives in No. Hollywood. Curly Joe is no relation to the original Curly but was my youngest brother. Yes I do know Redondo Beach it is about 1 hour's drive from where I live and I have done some fishing there..." Two punch-holes at the top partially obscure the writing on page 2; otherwise near fine.
