The Archive of a Champion Drag Racer

N.p.: Various locations, `, c. 1961-1975. Photographs uniformly near fine to fine; working notes and other ephemeral material very good to near fine.. Extensive archive of photographs and drag racing ephemera, all of which belonged to and documents the work of Jan Riedel. Contents include 252 loose photographs (143 color, 109 black and white: 232 snapshots, 20 enlargements), 30 film negatives, 20 pencil and ink drawings of various sizes, approximately 200 racing time slips and certificates, 150 advertising and event stickers, approximately 80 invoices, 40 ticket stubs and participant passes, and 8 NHRA Rule Booklets. The material foremost documents several design iterations of "Frustration", Riedel's drag race car, as well as the actual races, most notably at the 1964 NHRA Nationals held at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The archive demonstrates the unique process of engineering, graphic artistry, and personal self-invention that created the many iterations of Jan Riedel's "Frustration" drag race car. In the endless modifications, tweaks, and improvements, drag racing epitomizes the ingenious, and competitive individuality that fueled drag racing, especially in the postwar era. The drawings and photographs especially document a personal view of this distinctly American subculture.

Rare legendary Moshe Dayan handwritten article regarding the 5th Israeli Parliament elections of 1961. Dayan expresses his views regarding the upcoming elections and analyzes the future odds and various scenarios concerning the parties that will participate in the future government. "I won't be mistaking if I said that the intention is to make a minority become a majority and the majority to become a minority . . ."

1961. "In part, the letter reads, ""The elections coming on august 15th were designed for the election of a Knesset and formation of a Government, which will run the state in the next 4 years . . . The corner stone for these declarations was placed before the announcement of the dissolving of the Knesset. When ""Mapam"" and . . . and following them the Progressives announced that they will not seat in a government headed by David Ben Gurion they did not say whether it was a temporary sanction or a lifetime ban, but it was obviously refreshing moment in our democratic way of life, not the electors are the ones who determine the elected representatives, the . . . do. Meaning, those who elected Bentov Ben-Aharon and Rozen, those who did not see Ben Gurion as their representative, they are the ones who have right to decide who stands at the head of ""MAPAY"" (Labor party) and who praise the current election system . . . This coalition gave us three constructive achievements, a boycott on Ben Gurion as prime minister, premature elections and calling the Knesset for emergency gatherings to make it a stage for campaign speeches but this new-born coalition is still at its prime and its future is ahead of it . . . The labor party's candidate list and candidate order for the 5th Knesset hasn't changed, except for Lavon and Rothenstien, since the last elections . . . Then came the next stage, its subjects are the key people in this coalition . . . declare that they wont sit in a government in which the Labor party is the majority, while the labor party is a minority in the Knesset . . . what is the true meaning of this statement? Does the Labor party, having majority in the government, deprive the representatives of the other parties and by that transforming from minority to majority? In this Knesset the Labor party has 54 representatives (including the Arab parties) . . . by which system will the next government be elected? Will the parties in the coalition no see themselves as representatives of the public, which are privileged and obligated to serve in the government in accordance to the number of MPs the have? I'm afraid . . . I wont be mistaking if I said that the intention is to make a minority become a majority and the majority to become a minority. Meaning for example, if in the next Knesset will be comprised of the same people and also the same coalition will be formed."" In 1961 a letter was published with 36 more Rabbis adding their signatures to the previous list. They stated: ""May nobody be a part of Israel, Kenesset, or elections."" Various Rabbis, including many Sephardic leaders (not only Ashkenas, but all united Jews) have restated the sin that one should stay far from Israel, Kenesset and elections. This declaration, to step back as much as possible from Kenesset and their elections, was accepted by hundreds of thousands of Ultra-Orthodox Jews in Israel. They have received support from hundreds of thousands of Jews from all over the world that feel the same pain that the Zionists have caused Hashem-God, the Torah, and the Jews."

She disclosed that of the eight white students still going to integrated schools, several are in need of money. She said the father of one family has lost his job, but is continuing to send his child to Frantz.         The Concept of Law. (FIRST EDITION.)

Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1961. - FIRST EDITION. Original cloth. Very Good+, in dust jacket. 'The Concept of Law is the most important and original work of legal philosophy written this century. First published in 1961, it is considered the masterpiece of H.L.A. Hart's enormous contribution to the study of jurisprudence and legal philosophy. Its elegant language and balanced arguments have sparked wide debate and unprecedented growth in the quantity and quality of scholarship in this area--much of it devoted to attacking or defending Hart's theories. Principal among Hart's critics is renowned lawyer and political philosopher Ronald Dworkin who in the 1970s and 80s mounted a series of challenges to Hart's Concept of Law. It seemed that Hart let these challenges go unanswered until, after his death in 1992, his answer to Dworkin's criticism was discovered among his papers' (Clarendon Press Web site). 'With the publication of The Concept of Law in 1961, Hart's reputation was assured. Although some of the book built on themes from his debates with Lon Fuller and on his earlier writings about legal language, the book represented Hart's first comprehensive effort to understand the phenomenon of law from a philosophical perspective. This effort yielded numerous insights about the nature of rules, the structure and foundations of a legal system, the sources of law, and the character of legal obligation. It was Hart's lasting achievement, and although he also did pathbreaking work on the legal enforcement of morality, on causation, on Bentham, on the nature of authority, on punishment, and on various other topics, it is The Concept of Law that is his signal work. Indeed, it is The Concept of Law that explains why Hart can be the subject of a lengthy biography and why that lengthy biography can be the topic for an essay in the Harvard Law Review' (Frederick Schauer, '(Re)taking Hart', review of Nicola Lacey, A Life of H. L. A. Hart: The Nightmare and the Noble Dream, Oxford, 2004, Harvard Law Review, Vol. 119, 2006, pp. 852-883). Dworkin wrote a response to Schauer, 'Hart and the Concepts of Law' (Harvard Law Review, Issue 119, Jan. 2006, Forum 267). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Worm And The Ring

The First UK printing published by Heinemann in 1961. The BOOK is in near FINE condition. The binding is tight and the book is free from inscriptions and erasures. Mild bumping to the lower corners. The text block is lightly toned but the pages are clean with just some light finger marking to a very few pages. The gilt titling on the spine remains bright. Mild creasing to the lower corner tips of some pages. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition. It has mild rubbing to the corners. The pink lettering is only lightly faded to the spine. The spine is only mildly toned with just a little light soiling to the lower spine edge. Small closed tear to the lower front spine fold .There is a mild toning to the edges of the flaps. The condition of the wrapper is far better than usually encountered. An exceptional copy. The John Rowland designed wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival protector. A very SCARCE early key BURGESS title with an interesting history:The novel was withdrawn from circulation following a libel action by Gwendoline Bustin, the secretary of Banbury Grammar School where Burgess taught in the early fifties. Several characters were recognisable as figures from the school, but only Miss Burstin, later Lady Mayoress of Banbury, objected. Heinemann agreed to 'amend all unsold copies of the book' (The Times, October 25, 1962) but actually pulped them. An extremely scarce title to find with such attributes.

El papel de la ayuda exterior en el desarrollo de Cuba Charlas sobre problemas economicos en el Cine-Teatro MinFAR, marzo 9 de 1961

12mo, photographic and pictorial stapled wraps featuring a large Cuban flag and Che Guevara seated at a desk on a stage. pp 28, illus, charts. Part one (and apparently the last) of a series entitled Ciclo de Problemas Economicos - issued by MinFAR (Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces). Written by Guevara in his role as Minister of Industry, this paper lauds the increased revenue pouring in to Cuba via its Socialist and/or communist allies, namely USSR, China, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Poland, Dominican Republic, and Bulgaria (from $1m in 1958 to $500m in 1961). He stands this against the economic loss sustained by the recent severance of economic ties with the United States, concluding of course that Cuba is in a far greater position for economic development as a result. Wraps separated from stapled block, front wrap foxed, with chipping at extremities, rear wrap soiled, text clean and solid. Official stamp on last page. Rare, only one copy in libraries worldwide, according to OCLC; none in the U.S.
