        The Watchman

Scribners & Sons, New York 1961 - 275 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's quarter blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine over black boards with gilt lettering to cover in original pictorial jacket. Inscribed by the author. First edition. This is an extraordinary novel-tender, grotesquely comic and frightening. Under the shadow of the state prison lies an old West Virginia river town called Adena, its peace and security sedulously watched over by Sheriff Luther Alt. Hearing his boots ring slowly down the ancient brick sidewalks, folks could feel quite safe in their beds at night. The unexpected did not happen in Adena, until the death of you Cole Blake. The son of one of the town's leading families, he is found murdered. To discover why a young man in love has been shot to death, Davis Grubb enters a dark tangle of events and human emotions. Writing with brooding power, he composes an unforgettable gallery of Adena men and women. Each of them stands distinct, and they are the sheriff's two daughters, Jill and Cris, as different from each other as the light from the dark. And the Sheriff himself, the Watchman, a man of stoic nobility. The Watchman is a poetic melodrama. Condition: Inscribed on front endpaper "For Peter Johnson - with profoundest admiration for his dedication to a noble calling and with thanks for his friendship. Always, Davis Grubb 1961" with Grubb's drawn design. Corners gently bumped. Jacket edge wear with some small chips, some loss to spine head, corners lightly chipped else a very good copy in like jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Set in the Hindu community in postcolonial Trinidad - where Naipaul was born - A House for Mr. Biswas is the life story of a man who wanted only a home, but who was a magnet for misfortune, oppression and humiliation, 'a wanderer with no place he could call his own, with no family except that which he was to attempt to create out of the engulfing world of the Tulsis.' Mohun's survival is a triumph of resilience and persistence and humor, an epic of dignity and self-respect doggedly clung to." (Time 100) N. B. Limited to 4 copies. In this exquisite book the artist explores the textural qualities of something as simple as fibre ropes remembered from her childhood, demonstrating an adept artistic talent in creating fine detail and organic movement in the series of 14 etchings which explores her subject. Marina Charapanovskaia was born in Krasnoyarsk in Eastern Siberia in 1961, and grew up in Vorkuta in the Komi Republic, far northern Russia. She studied art at the People's University, Moscow 1982 - 1984 and spent the rest of the decade working in design for government departments, including designing powerful Soviet propoganda posters. Upon the breakup of the Soviet Union, Charapanovskaia emigrated to Melbourne where her grandmother had been living since the 1960s. She returned to study and completed her Bachelor of Fine Arts (Printmaking) at the Victorian College of the Arts (Melbourne University).         UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER

Chapman & Hall 1961 - First edition. Original blue cloth in dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the front endpaper to Bill Deakin, "For Bill Souvenir of Bari from Evelyn October 1961". A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper. Bill Deakin was parachuted in to Yugoslavia in 1943 to make contact with Tito and his Partisans. The mission was soon taken over by Fitzroy MacLean, who set up a military air base on the Italian coastal town of Bari. It was in Bari that Waugh, along with Randolph Churchill, was stationed and where Waugh first met Deakin. Waugh seems to have taken an instant liking to Deakin, in the same way that he took an instant dislike to MacLean, and regarded Deakin as one of the unsung heroes of the Yugoslavian operation for which MacLean took much of the credit. Their friendship continued in peace time when Deakin became the first warden of St Antony's College, Oxford and was knighted in 1975. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Jones had served in France and Flanders with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. This edition includes an Introduction by T. S. Eliot (Jones's advocate at Faber), and this is the deluxe issue, limited to seventy numbered copies (fifty for sale), specially bound and Signed by both Jones and Eliot to the limitation page. This copy is No. 61. The original glassine cover is present. The author's first book and most celebrated work, which takes the form of an epic prose poem set in the first world war, based on the author's own experiences. It was ten years in the making and was eventually helped to publication by T.S. Eliot, who hailed the book as 'a work of genius'. It won the 1938 Hawthornden prize. Stephen Spender in a review for the NY Times said: 'This work of a poet-painter has its every word chiselled out of experience, and it is probably the World War I monument most likely to survive.'         The Winter of Our Discontent [Pristine]

New York: Viking Press, 1961. First Printing. Hardcover. As New/Fine. First Printing. 8vo: [8],311,[1]pp. Publisher's turquoise cloth, spine titled in silver in black title block, upper cover stamped in blind, top edge stained turquoise, blue pictorial dust jacket priced $4.50. As New, very fine and unread, in a Fine jacket, vibrant and bright. All in all, virtually pristine. Goldstone & Payne A38b. Steinbeck's final novel, set in New England, the title a reference to the first two lines of Shakespeare's Richard III: "Now is the winter of our discontent / Made glorious summer by this sun [or son] of York." For the most part, Winter received a harsh critical reception (although the Atlantic Monthly called it a classic). Largely negative critics offered little appreciation of the risks Steinbeck had taken or the enormous technical innovations he had attempted in the text. But the following year the Swedish Academy awarded him the Nobel Prize for Literature, remarking specifically on five books from 1935 to 1939, then continued: "it is not possible to dwell at any length on individual works which Steinbeck later produced. If at times the critics have seemed to note certain signs of flagging powers, of repetitions that might point to a decrease in vitality, Steinbeck belied their fears most emphatically with The Winter of Our Discontent. Here he attained the same standard which he set in The Grapes of Wrath. Again he holds his position as an independent expounder of the truth with an unbiased instinct for what is genuinely American, be it good or bad." Now, fifty years later, "recent Steinbeck criticism seems to assert that The Winter of Our Discontent’s structural complexity went unappreciated by early readers who failed to see it as a successful portrait and call to action against an ever-increasing decadence which had invaded the very soul of the times."       The Bodley Head 1961 - First edition. Quarter bound in red cloth with grey papered boards in a decorative dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the title page, "For Moura with love from Graham" A fine copy in a near fine dustwrapper.         THUNDERBALL

London: Jonathan Cape, 1961. First edition. 8vo, publisher's original black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, in the pictorial dustjacket. 254 pp. A very handsome and clean copy in a complete and only very lightly mellowed dustjacket. FIRST EDITION. Fleming's books have had a staying power that few thriller-writers can match, perhaps because Bond is such an intriguing and morally ambiguous hero. Some admire him as a suave, supremely competent man of action who always gets the girl; others decry him a superficial playboy with a streak of sadism. According to Fleming, "Bond is not a hero, nor is he depicted as being very likeable or admirable. He is a Secret Service agent. He's not a bad man, but he is ruthless and self-indulgent. He enjoys the fight--he also enjoys the prizes. In fiction, people used to have blood in their veins. Nowadays they have pond water." The ninth James Bond thriller finds the high-living superspy guzzling carrot juice in a recovery clinic until the shadowy SPECTRE forces him back into action. But who is SPECTRE, and what are its nefarious plans?
