The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1961 UK Thirteenth Impression with Dustjacket and Custom Leather Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1961. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen and Unwin in 1961. A beautiful copy of a very collectable book. This is a 2nd Edition, Thirteenth impression overall, published in 1961, in its original and correct non price clipped Thirteenth impression dustjacket. The book is in Near Fine condition, virtually without fault. The only fault is a bit of browning along the top, but mostly along the bottom edges. The spine of the dustjacket shows almost no staining, no chips or loss to the lovely brightly colored dustjacket. No foxing to be found in the textblock or on the edges. No previous owner's name, but has "125" and "F4" marked in ink on the front free endpaper (map). The books cover is clean, bright, with a line of browning around the lower edge of the covers. No bumps or bruises to the corners, no wear or fraying whatsoever. An early collectable copy that shows beautifully with the very nice dustjacket. Now housed in a custom leather slipcase with The Mountain and Dragon design to one side, and the JRRT monogram to the other. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Near Fine.

Lady and the Monster / The Day the Earth Caught Fire (Original screenplays, Forrest J. Ackerman's copy)

Republic Pictures / Pax Films / Universal Pictures, Los Angeles / London 1961 - Forrest J. Ackerman's copy of scripts from two key science fiction films, bound together (including original front wrappers) in red buckram, with Ackerman's name in gilt at the bottom right corner of the front board. "The Lady and the Monster": Shooting script for the 1944 film. The first of three adaptations of Curt Siodmak's classic 1942 novel, in which an honest, hard-working scientist preserves a dead man's brain, only to be remote-controlled by it. Shot by the legendary John Alton at the very peak of his work in the mid-1940s. Yellow front studio wrapper, noted as SHOOTING SCRIPT at the top right, dated October 13, 1943, a penciled notation of the working title, "The Lady and the Monster" just below the printed title, noted as production No. 1194, and with credits for associate producer George Sherman and Republic Studios at the bottom. Two-page cast of characters, with the actors' names added in ribbon copy type just below the character names. Title page present, with credits for director Sherman and novelist Siodmak. 94 leaves, mimeograph, with blue, yellow, green, and pink revision pages leaves dated variously between 10/18/43 and 11/8/43. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine."The Day the Earth Caught Fire": An early and apparently abandoned draft by director Val Guest to film his screen story for Pax Films as a five-part British serial. Guest ultimately directed the story as a feature-length movie for Pax, one of the most understated and intelligent science fiction films ever made. Light green wrappers (both front and rear wrappers present). The front wrapper reads: "A Five Part Serialisation of / THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE / A Val Guest Production." Just below, in holograph ink (and in what we would assume is Guest's hand) is written, "Dedicated to Brian Aldiss." We think it likely that the script was gifted to the very connected Ackerman by Guest, though the provenance beyond Ackerman's ownership is unknown. 41 pages, divided into five parts, each beginning with a two-color memo on PAX stationery describing what will happen in the following section. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine.Buckram binding containing the two scripts is Very Good, with some light scuffing and soil.Martin 413. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Pharmacopoea Leodiensis in qua describuntur medicamenta ... in tres partes distributa. In prima simplicia omnia. In altera composita Galenica. In tertia chimica remedia.Liège, Everard Kints, 1741. 4to. With title-page in red and black with the woodcut bearing from the coat of arms of the city of Liege, the engraved arms of the dedicatee (the Bishop of Liège) facing the dedication. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, rebacked (gold-tooled spine).

Daems & Vandewiele, pp. 169-170 (7 copies); A. Guislain, “A propos de la pharmacopée Liégeoise”, Bulletin Cercle Benelux d'Histoire de la Pharmacie XXVII (October 1961), pp. 1-5; UniCat (6 copies); WorldCat (5 copies). Rare first and only early edition of the only pharmacopoeia for the city of Liège in the Austrian Southern Low Countries (now Belgium), largely independent of its predecessors in other cities whether in the Low Countries or elsewhere. Some of the medicinal recipes appear to be local in origin. It may occasionally borrow from the 1727 Dispensatorium pharmaceuticum Austriaco-Viennense, which was officially made mandatory for use in the Austrian Low Countries in 1737, but it copies neither the structure nor the recipes. The text (in Latin, though some of the preliminaries are in French) is divided into three parts: the first provides a classified list of nearly a thousand simples; the second provides recipes for hundreds of compound medicines; and the third provides recipes for about a hundred chemical medicines. Some of the compound medicines are unusually complex. Also unusual are the appendix giving prices of medicines and the list of 87 doctors, pharmacologists and surgeons enrolled in the Liège Collegium Medicinae. With an owner's inscription of the Liège pharmacist H.N. Fraigneux and 4 full pages of 18th and 19th-century manuscript notes in the endpapers. Slight browning and occasional foxing, but otherwise in good condition and with generous margins. The binding is structurally sound with the new parts in good condition and with the old endpapers preserved, except for the front paste-down, which has been replaced. The only Liège pharmacopoeia: an essential source for the medical history of Liège, Maastricht and their surroundings.

Original Unbound Sheets 1923-1935. [Ashendene Press]

Dawson's Book Shop, (Los Angeles 1961 - Small folio portfolio. One of seventeen portfolios distributed by Dawson's Book Shop. Contains Dawson's contents sheet, plus 20 leaves of proof, trial, and discarded sheets, which were purchased from the daughter of C. H. St. John Hornby. These are: an eight-page signature from The Faerie Queen (1923); eight pages from The Golden Asse of Apuleius (1924); two sheets of eight pages each from The Wisdom of Jesus, Son of Sirach (1932); eight pages from Daphnis and Chloe, with a single woodcut by Gwen Raverat; twelve pages from Spenser's Minor Poems (1925) partly printed in red and blue; and four pages from the Ashendene bibliography (1935) showing specimen pages from Un Mazzetto Scelto di Certi Fioretti . di San Francesco (with a woodcut in red), the Purgatorio of Dante, the Horace, and A Treatyse of Fysshinge with an Angle. In addition, this copy, which is from the library of Muir Dawson, contains two extra leaves not called for in the contents sheet: a single leaf of the opening text page of Le Morte D'Arthur, printed on glossy paper on the recto only. There is a penciled note on the upper right margin indicating that this is a proof. Also included is a two-page ALs from Hornby to Graily Hewitt on a single sheet of Shelley House stationery. The letter, which is undated, discusses pages that were ready for lettering, specifically, pages 28 and 29 of the Horace, and page 7 of the Virgil. The content of the letter and selection of the pages indicate that Hornby was working on the Bibliography at this time. Some wear to spine foot of portfolio, slight rubbing to corners, minor dampstain to corners of several leaves. A near fine example of a scarce collection of leaves. Housed in a red cloth folio-size portfolio with leather label. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Stability in Voting" in Econometrica, Vol. 29, No. 1, January 1961, pp. 33-43

New Haven: Yale University, 1961 FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF AN INFLUENTIAL PAPER ON THE THEORY OF VOTING, THE DUMMETT-FARQUHARSON THEORY. This paper "worked on the theoretical aspects of aggregation of individual preferences and on the strategic aspects of voting theory", provided an extended version of Duncan Black's single-peakedness theories, and argued "that deterministic voting rules with more than three issues faced endemic strategic voting" (Salles, Michael Dummett on Social Choice and Voting, Research Gate, February 2006; Wikipedia). Specifically, Dummett and Farquharson conjectured that "Voting is presented as an n-person majority game, in which preferences are ordinal. A condition on the preferences, substantially weaker than one postulated by D. Black, is shown to be sufficient for 'stability' in such games" (Dummett & Farquharson, p. 33). "In this paper, Dummett and Farquharson conjecture Gibbard's theorem. Furthermore, they prove the existence of maximal elements (tops of the social domination relation) for majority games (different from a majority rule essentially in the treatment of individual indifference) when individual preferences satisfy a condition analogous to single-peakedness but weaker than single-peakedness. "Precisely, one can read 'We cannot assume that each voter's actual strategy will be determined uniquely by his preference scale. This would be to assume that every voter votes "sincerely," whereas it seems unlikely that there is any voting procedure in which it can never be advantageous for any voter to vote'" strategically," i.e., non-sincerely. A general proof of this conjecture was given by Gibbard only in 1973 and by Satterthwaite in 1975" ( Salles, The Best Voting Method, Social Choice and Welfare, 337). "Nakamura proved Dummett and Farquharson's result for all proper simple games and Salles and Wendell used the similarity between Dummett and Farquharson's condition on preferences and quasi-concavity of utility functions in dimension 1 to extend some of Nakamura's theorems" ( Salles, The Best Voting Method, Social Choice and Welfare, 337). Sir Michael Anthony Eardley Dummett (1925-2011) was a British philosopher, logician, and mathematician who did important work on voting theory and systems. His obituary described him as "among the most significant British philosophers of the last century and a leading campaigner for racial tolerance and equality" (Obituary, Sir Michael Dummett, 28 December 2011). Reginald Robin Farquharson (1930-1973) "was an academic whose interest in mathematics and politics led him to work on game theory. He wrote an influential analysis of voting systems" (Wikipedia). CONDITION & DETAILS: New Haven: Yale University. 4to (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). First edition in original printed wraps. Complete. [1], 109, [7]. Very slight toning at the edges. Near fine.

        The Waste Land [signed]

London: Faber and Faber, 1961. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Number 278 of 300, quarto size, [52] pp., signed by the author. The Waste Land is widely considered to be one of T. S. Eliot's (1888-1965) finest works, and one of the most influential texts of its time. Contemporary Ezra Pound was immediately drawn to Eliot's work, drawing him into his circle and assisting him in publishing his work. Eliot's poems are marked by a strong influence from seventeenth century metaphysical poets and nineteenth century Symbolists. There is no finer way to read Eliot than in the fine letterpress editions printed by Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977) at Officina Bodoni, known for the highest quality craftsmanship. The present volume is printed in Dante type, one of the innovative types designed by Mardersteig after earlier Humanist typefaces. ***DESCRIPTION: Marbled paper boards heightened in gilt, quarter white parchment, backstrip lettered in gilt, top edge gilt, fore- and bottom edges uncut, white endpapers, colophon with Officina Bodoni device printed in red, Dante type, handmade paper by Fratelli Magnani, Pescia, 12" x 8", [2 blank leaves], [1]-51, [52], [1 colophon], [1 blank leaf], limited edition (Mardersteig edition), number 278 of 300, signed by T. S. Eliot. Enclosed in publisher's original matching marbled paper slipcase. ***CONDITION: Near fine copy, with clean binding, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, straight corners, internally bright with no marks or foxing, and entirely free of prior owner markings; only the faintest hint of rubbing at the edges where the book has come in and out of the slipcase and minor bumping at head and tail of backstrip, otherwise without flaw, a stunning copy. The matching slipcase is very good, strong and sturdy with the seams just beginning to gently part at the opening and minor overall rubbing. ***CITATION: Gallup, A6d. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell.
