        The Moviegoer

New York: Alfred A. Knopf. 1961. First. First edition. Fine in a lightly rubbed near fine dustwrapper with very light edgewear. Inscribed by the author to publisher and bibliographer Stuart Wright: "for Stuart with my thanks for what he did with a magazine article. Walker. Covington February 6, 1980." Wright was the publisher of the Palaemon Press, which published fine press editions of most of the best Southern authors of the time. Presumably Percy is referring to the fine press edition of Bourbon which Wright published as a private edition in 1979, and later republished in another edition in 1981. Estimates of the size of the printing of The Moviegoer vary, with strong cases for both 1500, and 3000. The Moviegoer was awarded the National Book Award over both Catch-22 and Franny and Zoey. The author's exceptionally scarce first book and a highspot of modern Southern literature, inscribed copies have become very uncommon, and are seldom found with notable associations. .

        Young Adam

Heinemann, London 1961 - 8vo, pp. 162. Original brown boards, lettered in gilt on spine. Top edge a little dusty, light spotting to leading and lower edge, otherwise a near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, rear panel a little marked, spine ends worn with slight loss to head (not affecting text), and three small closed tears to top edge. First UK edition, INSCRIBED BY TROCCHI'S COUSIN ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER: 'With the compliments of the author's cousin. The Demon driver!!'. Scottish novelist Alexander Trocchi [1925-1984] moved to Paris in the early 1950s, where he edited the literary magazine Merlin. Merlin flew the Existentialist flag, and numbered Sartre, Genet and Camus among its contributors. The magazine proved better at making reputations than money, however, and Trocchi was one of a group of impecunious writers recruited by Maurice Girodias to write pornography for the Olympia Press, an English-language, Paris-based imprint catering for the wide variety of sexual tastes to be found among the city's Anglophone residents and visitors. But Olympia also had a more respectable face -- it published the first edition of Lolita, as well as work by Beckett, Burroughs and J.P. Donleavy -- and Trocchi was keen to join its roster of writers. He supplied Girodias with two smutty potboilers written absolutely to the Olympia recipe, Helen and Desire and The Carnal Days Of Helen Seferis (both published under the 'Frances Lengel' pseudonym), and then submitted Young Adam, an altogether more literary work. Girodias didn't like it for precisely that reason. The novel, preoccupied with sex (good) and death (less good), unfolds in an allusive, elusive writerly style which Girodias knew would be a turn-off for Frances Lengel fans. He sent Trocchi away to rewrite Young Adam in the Olympia house style. Astonishingly Trocchi did, and the true first edition of Young Adam [Atlantic Library, 1954] is a sexed-up, dumbed-down version of the book which would go on to make Trocchi's name. This UK edition was the first to publish the text as it was originally written.

        Spencer's Mountain

New York: The Dial Press. 1961. First. First edition. Fine in very near fine dustwrapper with the slightest of rubbing. Signed by the author. Full-page Harper Lee blurb on the rear panel. Basis for the 1963 film featuring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. It was also the final film for veteran actor/director Donald Crisp, who suffers an unexpectedly gruesome death as Grandpa Spencer. Hamner was not pleased that the setting of the film was changed from his native Virginia to Wyoming, but had his way a decade later when the book was adapted into the television series The Waltons. The folksy and earnest program, narrated by Hamner, was a surprise ratings hit and remained a mainstay of quality television throughout the decade. A beautiful copy, and very uncommon signed. .

[Circa 1957-1961]. Four photo albums of events in India that contain more than 100 professionally taken images, owned by Thomas W. Simons, American Counsul General in Madras. Three oblong octavos; one oblong quarto. All appear to be presentations to Simons, who appears to be the featured guest or speaker. These were presented by Caltex Oil Company at the Inauguration of the Caltex Oil Refinery at Visakhapatnam (1957); the Lions Club of Kottayam; at Simons' Inaugural Address of the General Council at Anmnamalai University (1961); and the fourth unidentified. Most seem to be professional photos and are artistically mounted. 107 pictures total (including seven loose), perhaps five or six lacking, whether these are the loose ones or not is unclear. Some are captioned. Images include Simons speaking at banquets with local dignitaries, many sari-clad dancing girls, pictures of Simons in the streets, etc.Curiously we could find relatively little about Simons, although his son Thomas W. Simons, Jr. seems to have made a name for himself as ambassador to Pakistan.

[Paris]: Les Francs-Bibliophiles, 1961.. 109,[8]pp. Large octavo (24.5 x 16cm). Loose gatherings laid into printed wrappers. Frontis and 24 illustrations in mezzotint, with supplementary plate laid in. Fine in lightly worn chemise and velvet covered slipcase. First edition in this format, illustrated with original mezzotints by Mario Avati. One of 175 numbered copies on Vélin de Rives, printed by Fequet and Baudier, with the mezzotints printed by Atelier Rigal. Laid into this copy is an additional bifolium, being a menu associated with the meeting of the Société des Francs-Bibliophiles on 26 October 1961, illustrated with another mezzotint, numbered 'xi/xx' and signed by Avati in the margin. The book is itself inscribed and signed by the artist opposite the half-title. Strachan singles this work out for distinction in his discussion of "la manière noire," noting that Avati exploits the "medium superbly...In these hors- and in- text mezzotints the eye caresses culinary objects and items of food from egg-cups to peeled apples, pomegranates to pepper-mills. He treats homely, everyday things with the same affection and skill as French artists have done from the Le Nain brothers in the Braque in our own century." MONOD 1955. ROSENWALD COLLECTION 2228. Strachan, THE ARTIST AND THE BOOK IN FRANCE, p.222.

Revolutionary Road (First Edition, review copy)

Atlantic / Little, Brown, Boston and New York 1961 - First Edition. An advance review copy, issued with a different jacket than the trade edition, featuring lavish praise from the publisher on the front and rear panels, including an excerpted blurb by Alfred Kazin. Basis for the Academy award nominated 2008 film, directed by Sam Mendes and reuniting Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet for the first time since "Titanic."Near Fine in a Very Good dust jacket. Very light foxing to the top page edges; jacket has light chipping to the extremities and a few short closed tearsl, none of which affect the jacket text. Rear flap fold shows some creasing, and the spine panel is a bit toned, with the title and author's name written neatly in ink on the spine, likely by the publisher or the publicist. A very presentable copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
