OK, fine. So we get the manuscript around 1984.

c1961 1961 - Sheet size: 172 × 190 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Pen and ink on wove paper. A cigar-smoking publisher watches as an elder lady signs a publishing contract. The caption has been erased. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

[Photograph Album]: Wheelus Air Base, Libya and Istanbul, Turkey (1961)

[Tripoli; Istanbul]. (1961). Photo album. Oblong quarto. Approximately 14" x 10". Full cloth boards with a copper plate replica of the Selimiye Mosque (Edirne, Turkey) in relief on the front cover. Very good. Contains 86 black and white photographs neatly held in place on thick paper leaves with corner mounts, interleaved with embossed tissue guards. Laid-in at the rear are five 12" x 8" pencil sketches, three travel documents, and two additional photographs. The album was put together in 1961 by Charles Simpkins of the 848th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron. It is divided into one section with 36 photographs (measuring 4.5" x 3.5") of the Wheelus U.S. Air Force Base in Libya (now Tripoli's Mitiga International Airport), and a second section with 50 photographs (measuring 5" x 3.5") of various street scenes taken in Istanbul, Turkey. Laid-in is Simpkins's Signed travel voucher from 1961.The Libyan set of 36 prints are identified with manuscript captions written in white ink on the paper sheet directly underneath each print. This historic base, known as the "Hell Hole" for its scorching heat, was built by the Italians in 1923 and was used by the Germans during the North African Campaign. Captured by the British in 1943, it was taken over by the Americans in 1945 and became home to 4,500 Americans at the height of the Cold War. The photographs document the base when it was being used for a covert airlift campaign during the Congo Crisis of the early 1960s. They include shots of USAF 124s and other planes on the flight line during the Airlift, and various street scenes taken throughout the base: Arab laborers, the Mirage restaurant, the NCO club, a Jewish Chapel, and much more. Also included are shots of Americans and Libyans at leisure on the beach. The second set of 50 prints is a fascinating series of informal street scenes taken in Istanbul while Simpkins was most likely on vacation in September 1961. As none are identified, one can easily get lost among these shots of Turkish vendors, peddlers, musicians, and horse drawn carts, as they make their way through street markets and carnivals, with the occasional view of a mosque's minarets in the background. Various candid portraits include children at play, boys playing foosball, and all manner of outdoor vendors selling their wares. The five laid in pencil sketches are reasonably accomplished drawings of a B-718 USAF jet in flight, a Brayer tank truck, a Mercedes 300 SL, an old Roadster, and a World War I British fighter plane. .

Chinese Painting with the Original Paintings & Discourses on Chinese Art

Hong Kong:: Kao Ling-Mei,. 1961.. First edition. Very good condition. A folio volume with full page color plates of one of the best known and most prolific Chinese artists of the twentieth century, known as Zhang Daqian, 1899 - 1983 (original name Zhang Yuan). Zhang Daqian's lotus paintings and landscapes are especially noteworthy. Zhang and his brother studied painting as children, and traveled to Japan to study textile dyeing techniques. Zhang studied traditional painting in Shanghai, and began to meticulously copy ancient masters' works. He later studied ancient Buddhist wall paintings, enriching his own understanding of religious imagery. Contents of this folio include: on the art of painting; on painting plum blossoms, orchids, chrysanthemums, bamboo, flowers & plants; flowers and plants in the Mo Ku style, peonies in the elaborate style; on landscapes; on copying old masters; snow scenes; on nature, feeling and attitude; paper and ink; brush and water; birds, fish, animals, humans, classical ladies; painting eyes; of inscriptions, seals and mounting. Over time, Zhang became a highly skilled forger; one of his forgeries was acquired by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in 1957. In a recent Museum exhibition, titled "Zhang Daqian Painter, Collector, Forger" (Dec. 2007 - Sept. 2008), Zhang is described as follows, "As a painter, he was known for his singular ability to mix traditional techniques and styles with contemporary ideas and currents. As a collector, he accumulated important examples from all genres of Chinese painting and left behind copious seals and inscriptions. As a forger, Zhang so mastered the art of deception that his fakes were purchased unwittingly by nearly every major art museum in the United States.... Of particular interest is a master forgery acquired by the Museum in 1957 as an authentic work of the tenth century. The painting, which was allegedly a landscape by the Five Dynasties period master Guan Tong, is one of Zhang’s most ambitious forgeries and serves to illustrate both his skill and his audacity."Folio, 114pp, 74 plates. Blue cloth covers in pristine condition, traditional binding with title in Chinese on cream silk at front cover, gilt illustration of two figures at lower right, and red stamp. Housed in a gold and black patterned silk (slightly faded) fabric covered slipcase with title label laid down at front cover in English and at rear cover in Chinese; with loop and peg fasteners. The margin of the Chinese label at rear cover slightly torn at right side, not affecting text; some damp marks at margins only of inside flap of slipcase. OCLC: 20269190.

        Spencer's Mountain

New York: The Dial Press. 1961. First. First edition. Fine in very near fine dustwrapper with the slightest of rubbing. Signed by the author. Full-page Harper Lee blurb on the rear panel. Basis for the 1963 film featuring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. It was also the final film for veteran actor/director Donald Crisp, who suffers an unexpectedly gruesome death as Grandpa Spencer. Hamner was not pleased that the setting of the film was changed from his native Virginia to Wyoming, but had his way a decade later when the book was adapted into the television series The Waltons. The folksy and earnest program, narrated by Hamner, was a surprise ratings hit and remained a mainstay of quality television throughout the decade. A beautiful copy, and very uncommon signed. .

Physical Models and Living Organisms. Typewritten manuscript.

      - Four manuscript pages with a couple of corrections with pen on the last page. The initials 'NB' with pen on the upper right corner of the first page. * The text was published in 'Light and Life' edited by W.D. McElroy and B. Glass, The Johns Hopkins Press, Baltimore 1961, pp. 1-3. More copies of the manuscript have probably existed, but this copy is from the private collection of Niels and Aage Bohr.** In later life, Niels Bohr participated in several more philophical debates, such as the problem addressed here. Originally investigated by Max Delbrück the question is: what does nuclear physics imply for biology and the study of living beings - that is 'immensely complicated material systems' (present text, p. 3) as opposed to the relatively simple phenomena studied by Bohr and his collegues.

NY: Grove Press, (1961) - First American Edition of this long-banned masterpiece first published in Paris in 1939, the companion to Miller's earlier Tropic of Cancer. An unsparing account of what it means to grow to manhood in America, the magic leaps from the page in uninhibited, subversive, often hilarious -- never less than brilliant -- prose, proving yet again why the author remains one of the most iconic writers of the twentieth century. A fine copy in like dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Moviegoer

New York: Alfred A. Knopf 1961. First edition. Fine in a lightly rubbed near fine dustwrapper with very light edgewear. Inscribed by the author to publisher and bibliographer Stuart Wright: "for Stuart with my thanks for what he did with a magazine article. Walker. Covington February 6, 1980." Wright was the publisher of the Palaemon Press, which published fine press editions of most of the best Southern authors of the time. Presumably Percy is referring to the fine press edition of Bourbon which Wright published as a private edition in 1979, and later republished in another edition in 1981. Estimates of the size of the printing of The Moviegoer vary, with strong cases for both 1500, and 3000. The Moviegoer was awarded the National Book Award over both Catch-22 and Franny and Zoey. The author's exceptionally scarce first book and a highspot of modern Southern literature, inscribed copies have become very uncommon, and are seldom found with notable associations.
