        Strategie de la Paix

1961 - KENNEDIE, John F. Stratégie de la Paix (The Strategy of Peace). Paris: Calmann-Lévy, (1961). Octavo, original stiff paper wrappers, uncut and unopened. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.First French edition in wrappers, of this collection of Kennedy’s powerful pre-presidency speeches, inscribed to then Prime Minister of Greece, Constantine Karamanlis, who was visiting the White House the same day the failed Bay of Pigs invasion was launched, "To President Karamanlis with esteem and best wishes, John Kennedy."The Strategy of Peace, a collection of speeches assembled when Kennedy was a senator and leading presidential candidate, showcases his approaches to defense, peace, national security and related domestic issues. With a preface by Kennedy. Text in French. Preceded by the 1960 first edition in English. Translation into French by Jean Bloch-Michel. This inscribed copy is especially significant for, on the day the failed Bay of Pigs invasion of Cuba was launched, "President Kennedy was busy throughout much of the morning of April 19 in meetings with the visiting Prime Minister of Greece, Constantine Karamanlis" (Kennedy Library). Perhaps the timing of Prime Minister Karamanlis' visit to the White House explains Kennedy's mistaken inscription in this copy to "President" Karamanlis, for the Greek statesman, then Greek's youngest prime minister, would not become President of Greece until 1980. Because of the error, this copy was not presented to Prime Minister Karamanlis; instead it was given to a Sargeant Ritz who was serving on Air Force at the time.A fine inscribed copy.         Typed letter signed

1961 - KENNEDY, John F. Typed letter signed. Washington, D.C.: June 16, 1961. Two pages, 7 by 9-3/4 inches, separate sheets. $5500.Rare June 1961 two-page typed letter on White House letterhead signed by Kennedy, his first “efficiency report” to the Secretary of the Army on the job performance of the President’s Senior Military Aide, General Chester “Ted” Clifton, who met daily with Kennedy in intelligence briefings, would be in the Dallas motorcade at Kennedy’s assassination, and escorted Jacqueline Kennedy as the President’s body was airlifted to Bethesda Naval Hospital. In this letter signed by Kennedy, typed on White House letterhead, the President writes the Secretary of the Navy with high praise for his Senior Military Aide, General Chester “Ted” Clifton, dated the same year General Clifton joined the President’s staff. Kenendy’s letter reads: “June 16, 1961. Dear Mr. Secretary: This letter covers the efficiency report period, January 20, 1961 to May 31, 1961, for Brigadier General C.V. Clifton, assigned as Military Aide to the President. You and the Army can be proud of your representative who demonstrates his integrity, his imaginative resourcefulness, and his innate intellectual courage whenever he is called upon. General Clifton attends to his assigned tasks of representing the United States Armyâ€"and youâ€"in an outstanding manner. His additional duties as Defense Liaison Officer are carried out with the most sensitive appreciation of the needs and viewpoints of the Secretary of Defense and of all the services. He performs all of these duties with courtesy, consideration for others, and most cooperatively with other members of my staff. His mature judgment, basic knowledge and professional talents are contributed on every occasion to achieve the end results that I desire. I realize that General Clifton has been in the rank of Brigadier General for more than four years, and would normally be under consideration for promotion to Major [page two] -2- General. I have previously stated that I do not want this assignment as my Military Aide to interfere in any way with his early promotion which, based on my observation, he merits, and in that higher rank, I would intend to retain him on my staff. Sincerely, [signed] John Kennedy [typescript] The Honorable Elvis J. Stahr, jr. [sic] Secretary of the Army.”General Clifton was “the officer responsible for the President’s daily morning intelligence briefings on world events. He was in the motorcade in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963, when Kennedy was assassinated” (New York Times). It was Clifton who called the National Military Command Center and White House Situational Room from Parkland Hospital “to find out if there was any intelligence about a plot to overthrow the government” (Holland, Key to the Warren Report, 54). Clifton was also with Jacqueline Kennedy as the President’s body was airlifted to Bethesda Naval Hospital and “made arrangements with the White House to deal with military and national security affairs immediately after the assassination” (New York Times). Present at Johnson’s swearing-in aboard Air Force One, Clifton continued as Johnson’s Military Aide until retiring in 1965. From the estate of Major General Clifton, who also co-authored, with Cecil Stoughton, Memories: JFK, 1961-1963 (1973) and was a key consultant in the planning of Washington D.C.’s John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.Text and signature fresh and clean, staple holes at upper edges, faint foldlines. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

, , 1961. Ottimo (Fine). Fotografia originale in bianco e nero firmata, datata e dedicata a penna dall'Artista al recto (''83, Mario Giacomelli x Spallacci, amico''). Timbro e titolo al verso (''Io non ho mani che mi accarezzino il volto'', Mario Giacomelli, Via Mastai 24, 60019 Senigallia, An). Pubblicata in Enzo Carli, ''Giacomelli.

        JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1961. Early printing. Fine/about Fine. Early printing with "BOUND BY The Book Press" not "H. Wolff" in the four line colophon. A bright, Fine copy of the book in a just about Fine dust jacket with a small scuff on the spine panel and a few stray marks on the rear panel. On the whole a superior copy of the book that is rarely seen in this condition. If this was the first issue, it would be 10 time the price. Dahl's second book for children after "Gremlins." A somewhat controversial children's book due to the cruel treatment James receives living with his aunt and uncle, much like Harry Potter and several other young heroes. After escaping from home in a giant magical peach, James travels the world with his new friends having all sorts of wonderful adventures. Fine in about Fine dust jacket.

Period of Adjustment (Original screenplay for the 1962 film, dialogue coach's copy)

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1961. Original draft script for the 1962 film, based on the 1960 play of the same name by Tennessee Williams. Copy belonging to actor Mike Steen, who worked as the dialogue coach for the film, with numerous holograph notations, corrections, and changes to the dialogue throughout in both ink and pencil. Bound in at the rear are a complete shooting schedule and staff list for the film, dated 4/4/62 and 4/9/62 respectively. Several items are laid into the script, including a call sheet and work order dated 4/10/62, which corresponds to the first day of production. Also included are two 4 x 5 inch candid photographs of Steen going over the script with actress Lois Nettleton, and a 10 x 8 inch photograph featuring a head shot and several images of Steen from various productions, with his contact information typed on the verso. Most interesting is a three page carbon typescript letter, dated January 8, 1962, from Production Code Administration head Geoffrey Shurlock to Robert Vogel, production code liaison for MGM. The letter details numerous changes to the script, based on one submitted January 4, required by the PCA. They range from word choice and dialogue to costuming and action. Several of the suggested changes can be see in either holograph notations or change pages of Mike Steen's script, while others appear to have been ignored. An interesting window into the fading power of the PCA in the 1960s. Goldenrod studio wrappers, with Mike Steen's name in holograph ink on both the recto and verso. 143 leaves, including shooting schedule and staff list, with 124 script leaves and the last leaf of text numbered "130-132." Mechanically reproduced, with blue and gray revision pages throughout, dated variously between 3/21/62 and 4/10/62. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with three gold brads. Letter: 8.5 x 11 inches (22 x 28 cm). Three leaves, carbon typescript on rectos only. Folded twice. Very Good plus. Photographs: Two photographs 4 x 5 inches (10 x 13 cm), one photograph 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine, with some light curling.

Lady and the Monster / The Day the Earth Caught Fire (Original screenplays, Forrest J. Ackerman's copy)

Los Angeles / London: Republic Pictures / Pax Films / Universal Pictures, 1961. Forrest J. Ackerman's copy of scripts from two key science fiction films, bound together (including original front wrappers) in red buckram, with Ackerman's name in gilt at the bottom right corner of the front board. "The Lady and the Monster": Shooting script for the 1944 film. The first of three adaptations of Curt Siodmak's classic 1942 novel, in which an honest, hard-working scientist preserves a dead man's brain, only to be remote-controlled by it. Shot by the legendary John Alton at the very peak of his work in the mid-1940s. Yellow front studio wrapper, noted as SHOOTING SCRIPT at the top right, dated October 13, 1943, a penciled notation of the working title, "The Lady and the Monster" just below the printed title, noted as production No. 1194, and with credits for associate producer George Sherman and Republic Studios at the bottom. Two-page cast of characters, with the actors' names added in ribbon copy type just below the character names. Title page present, with credits for director Sherman and novelist Siodmak. 94 leaves, mimeograph, with blue, yellow, green, and pink revision pages leaves dated variously between 10/18/43 and 11/8/43. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine. "The Day the Earth Caught Fire": An early and apparently abandoned draft by director Val Guest to film his screen story for Pax Films as a five-part British serial. Guest ultimately directed the story as a feature-length movie for Pax, one of the most understated and intelligent science fiction films ever made. Light green wrappers (both front and rear wrappers present). The front wrapper reads: "A Five Part Serialisation of / THE DAY THE EARTH CAUGHT FIRE / A Val Guest Production." Just below, in holograph ink (and in what we would assume is Guest's hand) is written, "Dedicated to Brian Aldiss." We think it likely that the script was gifted to the very connected Ackerman by Guest, though the provenance beyond Ackerman's ownership is unknown. 41 pages, divided into five parts, each beginning with a two-color memo on PAX stationery describing what will happen in the following section. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine. Buckram binding containing the two scripts is Very Good, with some light scuffing and soil. Martin 413.

Blue Hawaii (Original screenplay for the 1961 film)

Los Angeles: Wallis-Paramount-Hazen / Paramount Pictures, 1961. Revised Final White script for the 1961 film. Notation (name) in holograph pencil on the front wrapper, though the association is unknown. One of Elvis Presley's most successful post-Army efforts. Presley plays Chad Gates, fresh out of the Army, and heir to a Hawaiian pineapple fortune. His mother Sarah (Lansbury) wants him to take over the management of the family business, but he'd rather surf the waves and dig the dames. He lands a job at a tourist agency, and meets Maile Duval (Blackman) and Abigail Prentice (Walters), but he also manages to anger a young dude and they engage in fisticuffs. Some of the songs featured in the film are the title number (originally written in 1937 for Bing Crosby), "I Can't Help Falling in Love," "Rock-a-Hula Baby," "Beach Boy Blues," and "Wedding Song." The soundtrack album is not only Elvis Presley's most successfully charting album, but it is also spent twenty consecutive weeks at number one on Billboard's Top LPs chart, a record to be broken only in 1977 by Fleetwood Mac's "Rumors" album, and it stayed on the charts for 79 weeks. Set in Hawaii, shot there on location. Self wrappers, noted as REVISED FINAL WHITE on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 160 and production No. 10224, dated March 17, 1961. Title page integral with front wrapper. 123 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 121. Mimeograph on eye-rest green stock, dated 3/17/61 throughout. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two silver brads.

Collection of 17 pieces issued by or relating to the Committee of 100

1961-1962, London 1961 - The Committee of 100, a British non-violent anti-war group, the brain child of Ralph Schoenman, personal secretary to Bertrand Russell, was formed in 1960 with 100 signatories, among them Russell himself, who had resigned from the Campaign of Nuclear Disarmament in order to co-found the Committee. The first demonstration took place on February 18, 1961, at the Ministry of Defence in protest of the arrival of the USS Proteus and its cargo of Polaris missiles (see nos. 2 & 7). Between 1,000 and 6,000 protestors were present, though no arrests were made. The next protest took place at Parliament Square on April 29th, this time with 826 arrests (see nos. 4 & 14). The Committee's watershed, however, arrived on September 17th. A week prior to this demonstration, all members of the Committee had been called to court without charge where they were bound to promise 12 months of good behavior. 36 members, among them 89-year-old Bertrand Russell, refused, choosing to spend six days in prison instead. A week later, on September 17th, 12-15,000 protestors arrived at Trafalgar Square, where 1,314 arrests were made (see nos. 5, 13, & 16). The success of this protest led to the movement growing to other locations, including Middlesex, Oxford, Bristol, Yorkshire, Manchester, and Wales (see nos. 10, 11, & 17). By this time authorities had arrested six Committee officers (the "Wethersfield Six") who would each spend 12-18 months in prison. By 1962, 50% of the founding 100 had been replaced and the Committee was in debt. The central committee eventually dissolved, leaving 13 local committees, each made up of 100 members, to organize their own protests. Possibly the last important sit-down to be held was in March, 1962, where Bertrand Russell spoke out against the treatment of the Wethersfield Six. All 1,172 participants were arrested (see nos. 12 & 15). 1. [.] Silent Vigil, Russian Embassy, Sat. Oct. 21st. London: Goodwin Press Ltd., n.d. [1961].         THE WYCHERLY WOMAN.

New York: Knopf, 1961., 1961. First edition. Presentation inscription dated May 1961, the month and year of publication, "For the Marshall McLuhans who have been so kind to these Archer books, and to their author, with love and a transcontinental hail! Ken." McLuhan and MacDonald were long-time friends by virtue of their common Canadian heritage, and their mutual respect for each other's intellect. Fine in dust jacket lightly soiled on the rear panel and with some very minor restoration to the spine ends and corners. Archer is hired to find a young girl who has been missing for two months. Before he's able to find the girl, Archer must deal with her mother, an eerily unmaternal woman who keeps too many residences, has too many secrets, and leaves too many corpses in her wake.

Salonger i fil. Interiör från Länsresidenset i Östersund.

[ENGLISH: An original watercolour by Swedish artist Hedvig Tegnér (1866-1961), showing an interior of the Governor's Residence in Östersund, Jämtland, Sweden (where the artist's brother Mortimer Munck af Rosenschöld served as Governor 1931-1938).]

1961 Hans Haacke Signed Inkless Intaglio Print

1961 - We offer a signed inkless intaglio print by Hans Haacke. The plate size is 3 7/8" x 3 3/8" on white wove paper. The sheet size is 12 3/4" x 9 3/4". Signed "HA 61" in graphite at the lower right and inscribed "Artist's Proof" at the lower left. Likely part of a body of work published by Haacke for his first show: "Hans Haacke Lithographs, Relief Paintings 9/6/62 - 9/30/62" at One-Wall Gallery in Manhattan (Four prints from this show are in permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art.). The organic, aggregate pattern in this piece shows the minimalist roots of an artist largely known for political work that probes at the nerve center of the Establishment. In 2015 Haacke installed his piece "Gift Horse" for the Fourth Plinth commission in Trafalgar Square; a skeletal, riderless bronze horse with an electronic ribbon tied to its front leg that displays the live ticker prices of the London Stock Exchange. Hans Haacke (1936) is a German-born artist who currently lives and works in New York. Condition: Adhered to matboard at top corners but otherwise very good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
