        CATCH-22

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1961 - Heller on the origin of the title "Catch-22". FIRST EDITION. Inscribed and signed by Heller: “To Jim Pepper: Who might be interested to know that if not for a novel by Leon Uris called Mila 18, this copy of Catch-22 would be Catch-18. Best wishes Joseph Heller 9/20/78.” Heller planned to call the novel Catch-18, but his editor, Robert Gottlieb, warned that best-selling novelist Leon Uris was about to publish Mila 18. As an alternative, Gottlieb suggested Catch-22, and the term became part of our everyday language. For Heller and Uris, both of whom were Jewish, the number 18 had special meaning. The Hebrew number 18, yud-het, uses the same letters as the word for life, het-yud. For this reason, donations to Jewish charities and gifts for special occasions are commonly made in multiples of 18, and the number is traditionally associated with good fortune and vitality. A wonderful inscribed copy of this modern classic. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Folklore Center presents Bob Dylan in his first New York concert

New York: Sat. Nov. 4. 1961. "Bifolium, 8½ x 11"" (folded); some soiling; very good. With a page and a half biographical sketch of Dylan on the inside (some of it apocraphal), and a notice of Folklore Center events and folk music chatter on the back (mentioning, among others, Odetta, Alan Lomax, and Pete Seeger). This seminal leaflet is from the papers of Israel ""Izzy"" Young, founder and owner of the Folklore Center in Greenwich Village, New York where he ""arranged concerts with folk musicians and songwriters, who often made contacts with other musicians at the Folklore Center. Dylan relates in his memoirs, Chronicles, how he spent time at the Center, where Young allowed him to sit in the backroom of the store, listening to folk music records and reading books. Dylan met Dave Van Ronk in the store, and Izzy Young produced Dylan's first concert at Carnegie Chapter Hall in 1961 for which this is the announcement. Dylan wrote a song about the store and Young, 'Talking Folklore Center'"" (Wikipedia). This leaflet has often been illegally reproduced and marketed. This example comes with impeccable provenance."

To Kill a Mockingbird / The Pulitzer Prize Novel 1961 (SIGNED)

J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia & New York 1961 - "Thirteenth Impression" stated to copyright page, and DJ front panel agrees "Thirteenth Printing." NOT price-clipped; original $3.95 price showing. Someone has used a "magic marker" to black our four words in blue ballpoint to top of FFE; we believe these words were/are "Belonged to Harper Lee." Bottom edges considerably shelf-worn but interior text block clean & very nice. Signed "Harper Lee" to title page. This book belonged to Edna L. Bowling, who ran for public office in Alabama four times in the 1970s and '80s on the minority "Prohibition" party ticket, capturing from 1.1 to 1.6 percent of the vote in her races for Congressional District 6 in 1972 and for Lt. Governor in 1974 and 1978. She fared best in her final race, for Secretary of State, in 1982, when she captured 5 percent of the vote, presumably a protest against Democrat Don Siegelman, who won the seat with 81 percent. Jim Bowling of Dallas, Texas, who sold us this copy, writes: "I was the executor of my grandmother, Edna L Bowling's estate. Most of her books passed to me. She lived in West End, Alabama and was an independent woman who successfully competed in a man's world. She was not famous but well known, since she ran for Governor (sic) several times. She sold encyclopedia's for 30 years. As a former school teacher, she wood go into small towns in Alabama, get to know the educators, city leaders and ask about students in need. She would usually stay in a small town several weeks at a time. She met Mrs. Lee in Monroeville, Alabama and she signed book on a later visit." 296 pp. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Juste Present - HAND-CORRECTED PROOF COPY, TOGETHER WITH A SIGNED PRESENTATION OF "LE FRUIT PERMIS"

      - An interesting set of proofs for the final poetry collection by the Romanian and French avant-garde poet, essayist and performance artist known for being a founding member of the Dada movement. Proof pages in advance of the 1961 publication, page numbers in pencil lower right, corresponding to the published pagination, the manuscript identified in another hand at the head "corrections de l'auteur 13 Juillet 1961," and bearing Tzara's corrections in blue ink on six pages. The included poems are as follows: I des profondeurs - page 11-12; II des profondeurs - page 15; III des profondeurs - page 16;  épigramme - page 19; une longue absence - page 20; la voix - page 23; fin d'un été - page 24; saison - page 27; aujourd'hui - page 28; à une morte - page 31-32; juste présent - page 35-36; 39-42.  Toned, a few stains, overall in fine condition. From the collection of the French writer and poet and artist Alain Jouffroy (1928 - 2015).Sold together with a signed but largely incomplete copy of the first edition of Le Fruit Permis, Tzara's 1956 collection of poems. Signed and inscribed on the half title page in French in black ink to Jouffroy, "a Alain Jouffroy en toute amitié poetique et.[adding a little sketch of a pointing hand] Tristan Tzara, le 8 mai 1957."  Printed on Marais, one of only sixty copies issued, however this copy sadly lacking the official signed limitation page as well as the 4 pochoirs by Sonia Delaunay, as well as many of the poem texts -  included here, in other words, only for the signature and association and supporting provenance of the manuscript above.   9 x 11.25 inches. Softcover, loose as issued, mild wear to spine. Paris: L'Imprimerie Caracteres (1956). Bénézit 4-390 ; Monod 10799.Tzara moved to Paris from Zurich in 1919 and it was apparently one of his manifestos that made Sonia and Robert Delaunay, who had lived in Spain and then Portugal since 1914, aware of the renewed artistic vitality of Paris after the end of the war and determined their return to France. After World War II there were two collaborations with Sonia: for Le Fruit permis (1956), her first book since La Prose du Transsibérien, Sonia contributed four pochoir compositions, and for Juste présent (1961), the present collection of 11 poems written between 1947 and 1950, she made eight full-page colour etchings  and an additional colour etching for the slipcase.

        Thunderball

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1961. Octavo. Original dark brown boards, titles to spine gilt, skeletal hand design on front board in blind. With the pictorial dust jacket. A little spotting to edges of text block, an excellent copy in the jacket with some nicks and rubbing to extremities. First edition, first impression. Ian Fleming's novel Thunderball incorporated material from an unproduced screenplay he had worked on in 1958 in collaboration with Kevin McClory, Jack Whittingham, and Ivar Bryce, with the result that Fleming found himself in a well-publicised case in the High Court defending himself against McClory's accusations of plagiarism, though Fleming and McClory eventually settled out of court.

        Some Arachnids

Apiary Press, (Northampton, MA) 1961 - Oblong quarto. (10)ff., + single letterpress sheet laid in. One of twenty-five copies signed by the illustrator, Joyce Sills. This copy bears a presentation inscription from Sills to social-realist artist Ben Shahn and his wife, Bernarda. The colophon notes that the Shahns' son, Ezra, had a part in the production of this book. Completed under the Apiary Press imprint, the name given to works produced by Leonard Baskin's students when he taught at Smith College, this work contains ten etchings of spiders, including one printed in green. Sills went on to enjoy a reputation as an award-winning printmaker. In a handsome designer binding by Sonya Sheats of full green Oasis morocco with enamel onlays. The binding features an abstract relief pattern formed by pressing the design into the leather using engraved plastic panels. Across both panels are a series of circular onlays of enamel-colored calf. The overall design is a series of concentric circles surrounded by perpendicular lines, which one can see as either a spider's web, or reminiscent of the shape of the spider's abdomen. The design for the covers is taken directly from the decorative endsheets, which show a web pattern made with India ink and thread. Housed in a slipcase of walnut veneer over plastic, which made the artist "think of a box in which one might store specimens," with a plastic sliding tab engraved with the book's title. An uncommon book with a great association in an elegant modern binding. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Typed Letter Signed by Viril "Gus" Grissom.

NASA, Langley Field 1961 - This typed letter to a collector of space material is written on NASA letterhead and dated August 18, 1961. The text reads: "Dear___, Thank you for your congratulations and thoughtfulness. Your reaction as a fellow American has been most heart-warming to me. I am very proud to have been a part of this step in our space program. I am happy to send a photograph as you have requested. Very Truly Yours, Signed Virgil I Grissom." Virgil "Gus" Grissom was the second American astronaut in space, aboard Mercury-Redstone 4 named Liberty Bell 7. It was a 15 minute and 37 second suborbital flight on July 21, 1961. The flight was successful, but the spacecraft sank shortly after splashdown. Grissom wrote this letter 4 weeks later. Grissom returned to space aboard Gemini 3 on March 23, 1965, which became the first manned Gemini flight. The flight, with fellow astronaut John Young, orbited the Earth three times. Grissom was chosen, with astronauts Edward H. White II and Roger B. Chaffee, for the first manned Apollo mission in 1967. On January 27, 1967, during a routine training exercise on the launching pad, a fire in the command module of Apollo 1 killed all three astronauts. Signed "Virgil I. Grissom." Authentic Grissom signatures are rare in any form. A Near Fine copy. Together with a card Signed by Betty Grissom and two small color photographs, one of a flatbed jalopy with Liberty Bell 7 painted on it that was part of parade in Grissom's hometown the day he went into space and a snapshot of Grissom's home where he grew up in Mitchell, Indiana.

        YOUR TEENS AND MINE

Doubleday & Company, Inc. (1961), Garden City - SIGNED by the former First Lady on the front endpaper. Roosevelt advises how a teen-age girl can grow to be a gracious lady by recounting her own experiences of overcoming shyness and facing her fears. A few pages in the penultimate chapter have pencil and pen markings with some words crossed out and a few added, apparently in preparation for reading from the chapter. The handwriting does not appear to be Roosevelt's but possibly may be Ferris's. In any case, it's an interesting alteration to an already uncommon book, especially when autographed. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
