Catalogo de propagana taurina 1961. Imprenta-Litografia Ortega Valencia-Espana. Catalogo Muestrario. Carteles, Cartelitos, Cabeceras, Prospectos, Billetes.

Valencia 1960 - 4to. 29.5 by 23 cm. Unpaginated, 48 leaves in colorful wrappers. Setting this catalogue apart from earlier Ortega catalogues, all of which are scarce, is besides the shape, the facing pages from the specimen samples feature action line illustrations of various facets of the bullfight. Splashily colorful trade catalogue from lithographic printer specializing in cards, tickets, programs and posters dedicated to bullfights and local fairs and fiestas. Much of the content is brilliantly illustrated promotions of bullfights, with flyers, posters and the like tipped in, generally two or three pasted onto the same base leaf. Samples which in practice might have been printed in varying sizes, often much larger than in the catalogue, they capture the thrill, ritual and spirit of the sport. The pages with tickets and some other items are less eye candy but no less useful documents of the material paraphernalia of the sport, and reminders too of the manifold commercial aspects of an entertainment business. Quite scarce, with the only several copies surfacing on OCLC from other years. Light wear. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

PLASTIC SURGERY BOARD CASES 1960 [Spine title]

Salt Lake City, 1960. 1st printing. Custom bound in blue buckram cloth. Binding & contents, Nr Fine.. 100+ b/w photographs documenting the original condition of Dr. Woolf's patients,  showing them before,  after,  and sometimes during  the process of treatment.  . Here offered is a bound volume of Dr Woolf's photo-illustrated application for certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery,  December 22,  1959. Volume contains detailed descriptions of 35 successful examples of Dr. Woolf's surgical technique, from his time at Duke University, various VA Hospitals,  and at the L.D. S. Hospital in Salt Lake City.  Each case description is 1 - 3pp in length,  and is accompanied by 2 - 5 mounted b&w photos (various sizes 3.5" x 4.5" and up). From this volume, we cannot help but infer that Dr. McCarthy was a quite skilled surgeon... some of the conditions which he repaired look quite hopeless at first examination,  not to mention quite gruesome in many of the cases, wherein he had to deal with gaping wounds,  caved-in skulls, cancerous gangrene,  etc., not to mention deformed babies with cleft lips and palates.   In almost every case,  the results are astonishing and one can only imagine how grateful were the patients and their families for Dr. McCarthy's fine work. McCarthy was a long-time resident of Salt Lake City, practicing there for ~ 30 years.   An arresting visual documentation of the work plastic surgeons were performing over half a century ago.

My wife and I spend the month of March in Arizona and I will sign and send your book as soon as we get back on April 5th* Yours, John Updike *:It is undoubtedly among my unforwarded mail." The second is typed on a 5x7.75 inch white sheet dated "May 3, 08." "Dear Mr. Lucas: thank you for your letter, and I'm glad you received your Rabbit, Run at last. I'll be happy to sign the others if you send me a way to get them back to you. As to first editions: Knopf is very good about printing that information on the colophon page; not all publishers do. Almost any copy of Redux that you find is apt to be a first edition, since it was a large printing that turned out to be optimistic. In general, an author dislikes the first edition, which is apt to have typos and errors in it; he values more highly the latest edition, which corrects some of them. Your kind words about the texts are much appreciated. Yours truly" and signed in ink "John Updike." Below his signature Updike has used his blue return address stamp. Folded in half. Four volumes, the complete Harry Angstrom narrative which has won the Pulitzer Prize (Rabbit IS RICH and RABBIT AT REST) and the National Book Award (RABBIT IS RICH).. Inscribed By Author with Note.         Exceptional Typed Letter Signed on personal letterhead

Merioneth, England, 1960. unbound. 1 page, 10 x 8 inches, Merioneth, England, May 23, 1960. In this letter, Russell provides a scathing review of a book sent to him by a colleague, in part: "...I have now read it, but I am somewhat puzzled as to what to think of it...There is, however, a point in your discussion of causation which does not seem to me valid. You suggest that the effect can be inferred from the cause rather than vice versa...I am not sure that I get the drift of your general position and, if I do, I find that I cannot agree with it. The whole conception of context, which seems fundamental in your system, is, to my mind, vague; but I feel that perhaps you intended it to be so and are suspicious of attempts at precision...Your Man-Thing puzzles me completely, as it seems to have purposes and to be much the same as what is usually called "God..." Near fine condition. British philosopher and mathematician who was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1950. "You say that mathematical logic should only be employed where number or quantity is concerned. The main point of mathematical logic is to extend mathematical methods beyond this narrow region.

A Very Good copy of the first UK edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, light rubs to board corners and spine ends, three corners bumped, slight indentations to the outer and inner lower corners of the leaves), in a Very Good, lightly-toned, dust jacket (slight soiling, spine ends pushed, slight tide mark to the spine tail, light corner wear, small indent to the front panel and a tiny tear to the front panel's upper edge), SIGNED BY EZRA POUND on the title page AND WITH POUND'S HAND-DRAWN GADFLY FIGURE on page 231 above his controversial definition of Religion which states as follows: "RELIGION: another of the numerous failures resulting from an attempt to popularize art." [A gadfly is a person who persistently annoys or provokes others with criticism, schemes, ideas, demands, requests, etc...] The book includes a selection of Ezra Pound's Prose and Poetry, including his possibly-autobiographical "Indiscretions", a group of facetious verses, Pound's translations from the dialogues of Fontenelle, and more. With only 1,000 copies of the first UK edition having been issued [4,000 copies of the first American edition were issued (New Directions in 1958)], copies of the UK first edition are rather uncommon. Signed copies of either first edition are quite uncommon as well and signed copies of the first UK edition with an original illustration hand-drawn by Pound are quite scarce indeed. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY EZRA POUND AND WITH AN ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATION HAND-DRAWN BY POUND. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Rosenbach A Biography [Extra-Annotated Association Copy]

Cleveland: World. 1960. By many accounts, the best biography of a bookseller and one of the best books on the antiquarian book trade ever written. John Fleming was for a generation the dean of American antiquarian booksellers, as A.S.W. Rosenbach had been before him. Fleming began working for Rosenbach as a clerk, and eventually worked his way up to being vice-president of the firm; Rosenbach was both his patron and mentor. This copy is inscribed by Fleming to Rosenbach's longtime assistant: "To Jerome E. Brooks. My first friend in the Book World. John Fleming." Brooks has 14 citings in the index, to which he has added, in pencil, a 15th; however, in this copy, Brooks has an even greater presence, having marked or enthusiastically annotated the text more than 100 times, providing either wordless comment by his emphasis, or emphatically correcting the facts (or the myth) about Rosenbach. Rosenbach's clients had been the most avid, and richest, book collectors of their day, and they built many of what are now the most famous institutional collections of rare books and manuscripts. Fleming continued the tradition after Rosenbach died, and became a mentor to another generation of booksellers. Obviously a well-read copy, but still very good, in a good dust jacket chipped at the crown, with splitting to the folds and evidence of aged tape-strengthening on verso. A unique copy, historically interesting, and in many places an addition to the historical record. First Edition. Hardcover.
