Autograph manuscript for an unidentified film score signed "B. Kaper"

1960. We have not been able to identify the film for which Kaper composed the present music, but the direction at the beginning, "F.I. after commercial," indicates that the music was written for television, which limits the choices mostly to the two series Arrest and Trial (1963-1964) and The F.B.I. (1965-1974). The stage directions, mentioning the characters of "Joe" and "Shepard," and the header "M 31," may help to identify the exact episode. Kaper was a Polish-born American composer. He was educated at the Warsaw Conservatory and was active as composer and pianist in Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna, London and Paris before settling in Hollywood and joining the staff of MGM in 1940... His best work dates from the 1960s: Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) and Lord Jim (1965) reveal a pronounced flair for musical depiction of the sea and tropical landscapes... Kaper's dramatic score for the science fiction film Them! (1954) is largely regarded as one of the classics of horror movie music of the period... After 28 years and more than 100 scores for MGM, Kaper, like many Hollywood composers in the mid-1960s, found film work declining as pop music became more prevalent. As a result he turned to composing for television." Christopher Palmer and Randall D. Larson in Grove Music Online.. Irregular format (352 x 305 mm). Five leaves of 12-stave onionskin paper with three pre-printed systems of four staves per page. Notated in lead pencil with timings in ink; pagination, signatures (one to head of each leaf), header "M 31," and other annotations in blue pencil; some corrections in red pencil. No date. A working manuscript, consisting of 56 continuous measures in score intended to accompany 2 minutes and 30 seconds of film. Stage directions in pencil interspersed: "F. I. after commercial - Joe starts to sneak - Joe reacts - Joe starts, gets up - Joe grabs shephard's [!Shepard's] neck - Shepard breaks loose - J. hits Shepard - finds rifle not loaded - J. finds ammunitio[n] - L. Shot highway car." Some corners of f.2-4 cut off; music not affected.

[Op. 23A]. In the Beginning Anthem for Tenor Solo, S.A.T.B. and Organ Words: St. John 1.1-14... Op. 23A. Autograph musical manuscript

1960. Unrecorded and unpublished. Not in the Grove works list. A Welsh composer, Hoddinott "graduated from University College, Cardiff, in 1949 and also studied privately in London with Arthur Benjamin... After being awarded the DMus in 1960 he consolidated his position as one of the leading British composers of his generation and in 1967 became professor of music at Cardiff... Hoddinott was particularly conscious that, he not being a pianist, his music did not derive from the Austro-Germanic sonata tradition but rather from the forms and textures of the Italian Baroque (his heritage as a violinist)... Hoddinott followed Bartók... in favouring arch-like structures in which a strongly propelled dramatic curve governs the unfolding of the movement as a whole... His approach, however, never involved the Schoenbergian abandonment of tonality, which remains a cohesive force throughout Hoddinott's output." Geraint Lewis in Grove Music Online.. Folio (350 x 260 mm). Signature of three bifolia. No watermark. Notated in black ink on 16-stave paper. 1f. (title; verso blank), 8, 1f. (blank) pp. In English. A fair copy. Systems have 4 staves throughout. Worn and somewhat soiled; occasional small stains; some offsetting; horizontal crease; lower outer corner torn off from p. 3, not affecting music.

Paris, Jacques Haumont, s.d. 1960 - Paris, Jacques Haumont, s.d. TIRAGE A 471 EXEMPLAIRES.

PARIGI, Mourlot Frères, 1960Litografia originale a colori impressa su carta vellina. Esemplare in edizione corrente perfettamente conservato. .

Autograph manuscript for an unidentified film score signed "B. Kaper"

1960 - Irregular format (352 x 305 mm). Five leaves of 12-stave onionskin paper with three pre-printed systems of four staves per page. Notated in lead pencil with timings in ink; pagination, signatures (one to head of each leaf), header "M 31," and other annotations in blue pencil; some corrections in red pencil. No date.A working manuscript, consisting of 56 continuous measures in score intended to accompany 2 minutes and 30 seconds of film. Stage directions in pencil interspersed: "F. I. after commercial - Joe starts to sneak - Joe reacts - Joe starts, gets up - Joe grabs shephard's [!Shepard's] neck - Shepard breaks loose - J. hits Shepard - finds rifle not loaded - J. finds ammunitio[n] - L. Shot highway car."Some corners of f.2-4 cut off; music not affected. We have not been able to identify the film for which Kaper composed the present music, but the direction at the beginning, "F.I. after commercial," indicates that the music was written for television, which limits the choices mostly to the two series Arrest and Trial (1963-1964) and The F.B.I. (1965-1974). The stage directions, mentioning the characters of "Joe" and "Shepard," and the header "M 31," may help to identify the exact episode.Kaper was a Polish-born American composer. He was educated at the Warsaw Conservatory and was active as composer and pianist in Warsaw, Berlin, Vienna, London and Paris before settling in Hollywood and joining the staff of MGM in 1940. His best work dates from the 1960s: Mutiny on the Bounty (1962) and Lord Jim (1965) reveal a pronounced flair for musical depiction of the sea and tropical landscapes. Kaper's dramatic score for the science fiction film Them! (1954) is largely regarded as one of the classics of horror movie music of the period. After 28 years and more than 100 scores for MGM, Kaper, like many Hollywood composers in the mid-1960s, found film work declining as pop music became more prevalent. As a result he turned to composing for television." Christopher Palmer and Randall D. Larson in Grove Music Online.

For Your Eyes Only: Five Secret Occasions in the Life of James Bond

London: Jonathan Cape, 1960 First edition, first printing of the eighth book in the James Bond series. Publisher's black cloth (Gilbert's A binding), with an illustration of an eye to the front board in white, spine lettered in gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping, with an illustration of an eye peering through a peephole in a wooden door, lettered in red and black. Near fine, with former owner's name to the front pastedown and title page, a few faint spots, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket with bright spine, small nick to the spine head, some wear and rubbing to extremities, some faint soiling and light creasing to the otherwise fresh panels. Overall, a very good and pleasing copy, hard to find with the red spine lettering unfaded. Gilbert A8a 1.1. For Your Eyes Only is a collection of five short stories that marks a departure from Fleming's previous novel-length Bond tales. Specifically, this volume includes "From a View to a Kill," "For Your Eyes Only," "Quantum of Solace," "Risico," and "The Hildebrand Rarity." Interestingly, each of the stories has lent itself to one of the modern Bond films, whether in plot elements or title.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Jerry Lewis and Frank Tashlin on the set of "The Bellboy" (Oversize, double weight photograph)

N.p.: N.p., 1960. Borderless vintage double weight exclusive photograph of Jerry Lewis with his mentor, director Frank Tashlin. With photographer's rubber stamp on the verso reading: "Exclusive Photo By BUD FRAKER." Fraker's credits as a still photographer include Howard Hawks' "Twentieth Century" (1934), William Dieterle's film noir "Rope of Sand" (1944), and King Vidor's "War and Peace" (1956). But most importantly in this case, Fraker was the credit still photographer on Jerry Lewis' directorial debut, "The Bellboy," where this photo was almost certainly taken. Tashlin directed six notable comedies starring Lewis just prior to "The Bellboy," and had an enormous influence on Lewis' desire to be a director, as well as his directorial style. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine.

Op. 23A]. In the Beginning Anthem for Tenor Solo, S.A.T.B. and Organ Words: St. John 1.1-14. Op. 23A. Autograph musical manuscript.

[ca 1960] - Unrecorded and unpublished. Not in the Grove works list. A Welsh composer, Hoddinott "graduated from University College, Cardiff, in 1949 and also studied privately in London with Arthur Benjamin. After being awarded the DMus in 1960 he consolidated his position as one of the leading British composers of his generation and in 1967 became professor of music at Cardiff. Hoddinott was particularly conscious that, he not being a pianist, his music did not derive from the Austro-Germanic sonata tradition but rather from the forms and textures of the Italian Baroque (his heritage as a violinist). Hoddinott followed Bartók. in favouring arch-like structures in which a strongly propelled dramatic curve governs the unfolding of the movement as a whole. His approach, however, never involved the Schoenbergian abandonment of tonality, which remains a cohesive force throughout Hoddinott's output." Geraint Lewis in Grove Music Online. Folio (350 x 260 mm). Signature of three bifolia. No watermark. Notated in black ink on 16-stave paper. 1f. (title; verso blank), 8, 1f. (blank) pp. In English. A fair copy. Systems have 4 staves throughout.Worn and somewhat soiled; occasional small stains; some offsetting; horizontal crease; lower outer corner torn off from p. 3, not affecting music.

        The Conscience of a Conservative

Shepherdsville, Kentucky: Victor Publishing Company, 1960. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket with light rubbing. The Conscience of a Conservative is Barry Goldwater's classic which re-ignited the American conservative movement and made him a political star. The term "Goldwater conservative" became a household word. It influenced countless conservatives in the United States, helping to lay the foundation for the Reagan Revolution. "The book lays out, clearly and succinctly, [Goldwater's] uncompromising views. Goldwater held freedom as the highest value in American society: freedom from law, freedom from government, freedom from anybody else's vision but your own. You can argue with him on the particulars, but there's something compelling about his quintessentially American notion of self-reliance" (David Ulin, Los Angeles Times).
