        Drawings for the Bible.

Printed in Paris for Harcourt Brace & Co. New York 1960 - First American edition of this double issue of Verve, 37/38, with additional title-page in English. Folio (35.5 x 26 cm), [17] pp, 24 original colour lithographs by Chagall printed by Mourlot, 96 black and white photogravures printed by the brothers Draeger and reproducing the etchings made by Chagall for the Illustrations for the Bible, [16] pp. Text by Gaston Bachelard translated into English by Stuart Gilbert. Publisher's pictorial boards depicting David, Bathsheba and God; moderate edgewear, the spine showing some separation, remains of the original dust wrapper, corners slightly bumped. Chagall's celebrated illustrations for the Bible, with 24 additional colour lithographs specially made for this Verve edition. "Since early youth, I have been captivated by the Bible. It seemed and still seems to me the greatest source of poetry of all time. Since then, I have sought out its reflection in life and in art. The Bible as it were resonates in nature, and it is this secret I try to convey" (Marc Chagall). In this beautiful portfolio, produced in Paris under the direction of the well-known publisher Tériade, Marc Chagall (1887-1985) continued his exploration of the Bible, as a source of inspiration for his drawings. The publication capitalises on Chagall's first cycle titled Illustrations for the Bible, which had been specially commissioned by Ambroise Vollard, the great art dealer and publisher of artist books, and was published by Tériade for Verve in two volumes in 1956. In the present work, Chagall additionally included scenes of the Old Testament's 'great dramas' drawn in 1958-59 , among which one finds the story of the Garden of Eden, Cain and Abel, the flood, the golden calf, Jonah and the whale, David and Goliath etc. Sorlier 75; Cramer 42.         Don Quichotte.

PARIS EDITIONS D'ART LES HEURES CLAIRES 1960 4 IN-8Illustrations d'Henry LEMARIE.

The Firmament of Time [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Atheneum. 1960. A collection of six lectures on "man's vision of nature and himself," by the author of The Immense Journey, among others. Inscribed by Eiseley to Hiram Haydn: "To Hiram Haydn/ beloved friend and distinguished editor/ from/ Loren Eiseley." Haydn had been Eiseley's editor and champion at Random House for The Immense Journey. From Gale E. Christianson's biography of Eiseley, Fox at the Wood's Edge: "Hiram faced us all down at the sales conference [by claiming] that The Immense Journey would sell forever. And that's what it promises to do. We all dragged our feet on it and we were wrong." When Haydn broke ranks with Random House in 1959 to help start a new publishing house with Alfred Knopf, Eiseley agreed to follow: in return Haydn told Eiseley he would name the new publishing venture Atheneum, after the Athenaeum Award Eiseley had recently won (for Darwin's Century, which had been published by Doubleday). Atheneum's first Eiseley publication was The Firmament of Time, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and won the John Burroughs Medal, the highest honor given to a book of natural history in the U.S. Mild dustiness to the top edge; a very near fine copy in a very good dust jacket with modest edge wear and spine fading. One of the best possible association copies of this book, which was a landmark in both the author's writing career and in the history of a fledgling publisher that went on to become one of the premier literary publishers in America. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.

62 PSAUMES ET VERSETS DE LA BIBLE [with additional original color pencil drawing laid in]

[Châtenay-Malabry (Seine) ]; Lefort, 1960. Folding Case. Large Folio. Sixty-two illustrated plates. 44 cm. Nr 289 of a deluxe edition of 2000 copies. First edition. With additional original full-size drawing in 3 colors, with colored pencil, of doves and flowers, with inscription in Hebrew and signed. Housed in original folding-case, loose as issued, original colored pictorial stiff wrappers. Title translates as: ?62 Psalms and Verses of the Bible. ? In French. Preface by Jules Romains. ?The artist Benn was a renowned Jewish painter who drew inspiration from the Bible and expressed his spiritual connection to it in a body of self-contained and highly integrated work, which was published under the title ?62 Psaumes et versets de la Bible. ? When the Nazis entered Paris, Benn?s worst premonitions were realized. He was rounded up together with other East European Jews and interned in a holding camp, whose inmates were ultimately destined for a concentration camp in Germany. He was held in that camp for a month, and during that time he sketched the faces of his co-internees and their surroundings. He fell into a deep depression, lost weight, and would probably have died had it not been for the efforts of his wife and friends who managed to smuggle him out of the camp. Arrangements were made to hide the couple in the basement of an apartment house in Paris. Benn and his wife remained there in hiding for the duration of the war. During his twenty six months of confinement, Benn completed a series of sixty two drawings, based on selected psalms and verses of the Bible. The remarkable feature of this body of work is that it represents a radical departure in style from of his other work, and that style, while continuing to evolve after the war, remained exclusively associated with biblical themes. He continued to use biblical themes as subject matter (e. G. , Song of Songs) , and this particular style sets these works quite apart from the other figurative and representational work he did simultaneously. The drawings and the canvasses were critically acclaimed, and the artist was urged to make the works more accessible. In order to accommodate the demand for his biblically inspired work Benn agreed to have the sixty two drawings and paintings reproduced in the form of an album, which was published in 1960 under the title, ?62 Psaumes et Versets de la Bible. ? The publication was issued in a limited edition of 2, 000 copies. The album was prefaced by the French writer Jules Roman, of the Academie Française. ? (Art of Benn) Subjects: Bible. O.T. - Illustrations. Bible. O.T. Psalms - Illustrations. Bible. A.T. - Illustrations. OCLC lists 14 copies. Folding case has tear at crown of spine, otherwise Very Good. Illustrated plates are colorful, bright and clean. Very Good condition. (SPEC-36-10)

Association Copies: Jerome Rothenberg to Clayton Eshleman

1960-2006. Approximately 40 Rothenberg items from Eshleman's library spanning the years 1960 -- Rothenberg's first book -- to 2006. Most of the items are signed or inscribed by Rothenberg to the poet Clayton Eshleman. The group includes Rothenberg's first book inscribed to Eshleman in the year of publication, and documents their ongoing relationship from a time prior to the publication of Eshleman's own first books (Mexico and North and Pablo Neruda, Residence on Earth, each 1962) and forward over the course of nearly five decades. The two poets shared not only a friendship but a strong interest in ethnopoetics, something that sets both apart from many of the other poets of their generation and links these two quite closely. Rothenberg's books were part of what Eshleman called his "core library," and the poetic and personal connections represented by these copies provide an important piece of the poetic history of their era. As follows: * White Sun/Black Sun. (NY): Hawk's Well Press (1960). Rothenberg's first book, a collection of poems, published by a press that he founded to issue work by avant garde poets. Inscribed by Rothenberg in October, 1960 to Clayton Eshleman, "with warm best wishes." A nice association copy, linking the two poets from an early date, two years prior to Eshleman's own first book being published. In wrappers. * Sightings/Lunes. (NY): (Hawk's Well Press)(1964). Inscribed by Rothenberg in 1965 to Clay[ton Eshleman] and Barbara: "these poems for light and all." The glue has failed on the tipped-in drawings by Amy Mendelson; the drawings are now laid in; otherwise near fine in wrappers. Also laid in is a small broadside printing "Sightings" by Rothenberg, with "Lunes" by Robert Kelly on the verso. In addition there is an announcement of the 1965 birth of Rothenberg's son. * Ritual: A Book of Primitive Rites and Events. NY: A Great Bear Pamphlet, 1966. Inscribed by Rothenberg to Clayton [Eshleman] & Caryl, "the pleasure of your company. Love/Jerry. Postdated: 8/11/79." Stapled wrappers. * The Gorky Poems. Mexico: Corno Emplumado, 1966. A bilingual (English/Spanish) edition. Inscribed by Rothenberg to Clay[ton Eshleman] & Caryl in 1979, "con fuertes abrazos." With Eshleman's ownership signature, dated 1966. In wrappers. * Between 1960-1963. London: Fulcrum Press (1967). Inscribed by Rothenberg to Clayton [Eshleman] & Caryl in 1979, "after between & with love." With Eshleman's ownership signature, dated in the year of publication. In wrappers. * The Flight of Quetzalcoatl. Brighton: Unicorn, 1967. Translation of an Aztec myth/song, rendered into Spanish verse in the 16th century and then adapted into Spanish prose, from which this translation was done. Of a total edition of 426 copies, this is one of 26 lettered copies signed by Rothenberg and by Tony Bennett, who designed the cover. Stapled wrappers. * The Book of Hours and Constellations. NY: Something Else Press, 1968. The poems of Eugen Comringer, "presented by" Rothenberg. Wrappers. * Poland/1931. (n.p.): Unicorn Press (1970). The limited trade edition. One of 500 numbered copies, this copy inscribed by Rothenberg to Clayton [Eshleman] & Caryl. Unbound sheets and photographs, fine, inserted into pockets of hardbound portfolio. * Poland/1931. The Wedding. (n.p.):(n.p.)(n.d.). Undated broadside printing only one poem. Inscribed by Rothenberg to Clayton [Eshleman]: "Year's Joys! Jerry/Diane/Matthew." Rothenberg has also corrected one misprint in the broadside. Folded in thirds and addressed as a letter to Eshleman by Rothenberg. * Poems for the Game of Silence, 1960-1970. NY: Dial Press, 1971. Uncommon hardcover edition. Fine in a very good dust jacket with chipping to the edges and folds, internally tape-mended. * A Book of Testimony. (Bolinas): Tree Books, 1971. Inscribed by Rothenberg to Clayton [Eshleman] & Caryl, "in the warm aura of Italian/Latino music - Los Angeles Saturday - love." Wrappers. * Poland 1931. (NY): New Directions (1974). The New Directions softcover issue of this title. Inscribed by Rothenberg to Clayton [Eshleman] & Caryl with "happy welcome home" and "abrazos." * Esther K. Comes to America. (1931). A journal in a small, matchbox style box. Including a vertical accordion-folded book, several cards with illustrations, a folding map of the Five Nations, two seeds, some fur and a stalk/ribbon. A book as a box of small cards, with text on one side and illustrations on the other, and two sheets of paper that give the history of the term "Gematria" and an example of the way the cards can be positioned as a whole. In a folding cardstock box that has been inscribed by Rothenberg to Clayton [Eshleman] & Caryl, "with love" in the year of publication. * A Seneca Journal. (NY): New Directions (1978). The softcover trade edition of this book that arose out of Rothenberg's time living on a Seneca reservation.         Production of commodites by means of commodities; Prelude to a critique of economic theory.

Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1960 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered gilt, with the dust jacket. A little fading to board edges; an excellent copy in the slightly faded jacket with some nicks and chips to extremities. First edition of Sraffa's attempt to perfect classical economics' theory of value, as originally developed by David Ricardo and others. "Production of Commodities is a peculiarly sparse book. The argument has been pared to the absolute minimum to sustain the propositions which Sraffa wishes to advance. Yet, the precision and logical elegance of the argument are 'the work of an artist working in the medium of economic theory' (P. Newman)" (John Eatwell in The New Palgrave).         Personal Badges for the 1960 Democratic National Convention; with Typed Letter Signed

Los Angeles: np. FIRST EDITION. Fine. ELEANOR ROOSEVELT'S OFFICIAL CONVENTION BADGES FOR THE 1960 DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL CONVENTION. With a signed letter from Roosevelt to her good friend Mayris Chaney concerning her arrival at the convention. TWO BADGES: Decorative medals held with red-white-and-blue ribbon, the first reading "Mrs. F.D. Roosevelt / Former First Lady" on two metal bars, between beautiful engraved patriotic designs at the top and bottom surrounding the text "United States of America" and "1960 Democratic National Convention Los Angeles"; the second badge, again with the beautiful patriotic emblems, reads "Honored Guest". The medals include the original box.On July 10, 1960, the day before the Democratic National Convention in Los Angeles, Eleanor Roosevelt refused to ride in a limousine to a reception, preferring to walk half a mile with reporters. The absence of former President Harry Truman underscored the Democrats' break with the past and cast a warm light on former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, who attended the convention to support the faltering and ultimately doomed Presidential Campaign of Adlai Stevenson. In speaking for Stevenson, Roosevelt questioned whether Kennedy's Catholic faith might cost him votes and said he didn't have the support of African Americans. Instead, she backed a Stevenson-Kennedy political ticket. This trip in 1960 proved to be the final Political Convention which she attended. After the election, Roosevelt chaired the John F. Kennedy administration's ground-breaking Committee which helped start Second-wave Feminism, the "Presidential Commission on the Status of Women." In 1999, she was ranked in the top ten of Gallup's List of Most Widely Admired People of the 20th Century. Her letter to Mayris Chaney (included in this collection) is typed on Roosevelt's personal New York City letterhead and reads in full:June 24, 1960 Dearest Tiny:I have had another change in plans and will arrive the night of July 10th getting in at 7:30 p.m. but you need not meet me as Frankie is having a car and driver at my disposal.Let's hope this is the last change! Anyhow, it means I will be able to come to you sooner than I expected and this is a joy. With much love, Devotedly, [signed] E.R.[handwritten] Frankie is meeting me & - if avail we can come for you later after dinner.Mayris Chaney (Mrs. Hershey Martin), was a renowned dancer who worked with Roosevelt in the Office of Civilian Defense, and one of her closet friends for almost twenty years. Their friendship began in the early thirties after Roosevelt's bodyguard Earl Miller introduced his charge to Chaney and her dance partner Eddie Fox. Roosevelt felt so at ease with Martin that she quickly nicknamed her "Tiny," included her in the close circle of friends with whom she could relax in private (at Val-Kill and the White House, in their homes, and on vacation) and served as Godmother to Martin's daughter Anna Eleanor (named after Eleanor Roosevelt). The letter includes the original mailing envelope.
