        Ascending and Descending.

      Baarn: , 1960. Original lithograph on Simili Japon paper with the Holland watermark. Image size: 35.6 x 28.6 cm. Sheet size: 45.2 x 38.2 cm. Old hinging tape to verso of extreme upper edge otherwise in excellent condition. Presented in the original contemporary frame with conservation mount and UV acrylic. Edition of 108 III. Signed and numbered lower right in pencil by Escher. Ascending and Descending was influenced by and is an artistic implementation of the Penrose stairs, an impossible object devised by the mathematician Lionel Penrose. The characters that climb the impossible staircase represent a group of people that follow an inescapable destiny. Two other characters can be noticed on the lower levels of the building that do not participate in the ritual. Escher calls these two characters free people that do not like conformity.

        Ernst Jüngers Typoskript "Der Weltstaat" (Variantfassung!)

      47 Blatt Halbleinen Typoskript Ernst Jünger : "Der Weltstaat", 1960 (2),46 (1) Blatt schreibmaschinenschriftlicher Durchschlag von Ernst Jünger mit Sammlungs-Stempel von Jüngers Bibliographen Hans Peter des Coudres und dessen eigenhändigem Weiterschenkvermerk an den Sammler und Bankier Otmar Lang. Mit 2seitigem eigenhändigen Begleitschreiben von des Coudres an Lang. In Halbleinen gebunden mit goldgeprägtem Rückentitel.- Anstreichungen und Notizen im Text vom damaligen Klett-Lektor Dr. Meier. Ausweislich des Briefes von Jüngers Bibliographen des Coudres ist das Typoskript von Jünger selbst hergestellt und "gegenüber den verschiedenen Versionen des Weltstaates hat dieser frühere Zustand noch manche Variante aufzuweisen". Es handelt sich also Fassungs- und editionsgeschichtlich um ein Dokument von grosser Wichtigkeit. "Der Weltstaat ist Jüngers politische Zentralvision" konstatiert Steffen Martus in seiner Jünger-Monographie (2001, S. 200), die Stichhaltigkeit seiner politischen Vision betont Jünger noch Jahrzehnte später im Gespräch mit der Zeitschrift Der Spiegel: "Ich darf ja erwähnen, daß ich ein Buch mit dem Titel "Der Weltstaat" geschrieben habe, in dem Dinge stehen, die auch die Grünen begrüßen müssen, daß nämlich im Weltstaat die nationalen Grenzen fallen, aber die alten Heimaten erhalten bleiben, sogar erst richtig sich entfalten." Umfang: gebundenes Typoskript, Beilagen: 1 handschriftlicher Brief des Coudres an Lang, 1 handschriftlicher Zettel des Coudres zur Urheberschaft der Notizen im Typoskript, sowie ein im Typoskript einliegender Prospekt des Dulk Verlages. // Kein Versand, nur persönliche Übergabe in Mitteleuropa // interner vermerk kxx m/'

        Production of commodites by means of commodities;

      Cambridge: Cambridge University Press,, 1960. Prelude to a critique of economic theory. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered gilt, with the dust jacket. An exceptionally bright copy in a jacket with very light toning to spine panel and a few minor nicks and marks. A remarkably fresh copy. First edition of Sraffa's attempt to perfect classical economics' theory of value, as originally developed by David Ricardo and others. "Production of Commodities is a peculiarly sparse book. The argument has been pared to the absolute minimum to sustain the propositions which Sraffa wishes to advance. Yet, the precision and logical elegance of the argument are 'the work of an artist working in the medium of economic theory' (P. Newman)" (John Eatwell in The New Palgrave). With the author's Times obituary laid in. A scarce title, especially so in such nice condition.

        Fiftieth Anniversary Report of the Harvard Class of 1910

      The Cosmos Press, Cambridge, MA 1960 - 8vo. 561pp. Original red cloth. With the stamps of the Harvard Club of New York, including their discarded stamp. A scarce T.S. Eliot item, his lengthy autobiographical entry occupying pages 133-136. Members of the class were asked to send in their current contact information, along with autobiographies summarizing the half century that had passed since their graduation. Eliot gives his address at Faber & Faber, his occupation as "Author and Publisher", lists his honorary degrees and awards and opens his text: "What the Secretary appears to be bent upon extracting from his wretched classmates is a full-length autobiography. If he really wants everything he says he wants he should have provided a good deal more paper, but I am glad he didn't. I don't see why I should again review my life 'since graduation': I did my best to oblige him in this respect 25 years ago, and that statement can stand, with two important qualifications-- I now prefer claret to burgundy, and I prefer Inspector Maigret to Arsène Lupin. So I shall begin with 1933: that is a good date for me, as that is the year in which I broke into Show Business." Despite his playful/combative opening tone, Eliot goes on at length to list his many publications and accomplishments, and ends by saying that without his marriage to Valerie Fletcher "no achievement or honour could give me satisfaction at all." Another lengthy entry is provided by his classmate Walter Lippmann. Accompanied by the printed pamphlet of the speeches given by Lippmann and Clarence Little and a copy of the chairman's report. Gallup C642. Spine a bit faded and with a few soilmarks, a few bumps to board edges [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Signed Photograph

      Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Original 8 x 10 photograph of the great conductor, inscribed to the impresario and Columbia Artists manager André Mertens "in friendship," signed, and dated New York, April 1960. Walter is shown studying a score with his baton in his hands, in a dramatically-lit image. In very fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.7 x 25.4 cm).<br>The important musical manager André Mertens began his career as the directory of the State Ministry of Fine Arts in Germany, before fleeing to the USA in 1933. There he became the founder of Columbia Artists Management and played an important role in developing the careers of artists such as Leontyne Price and Renata Tebaldi. In the post-war years, he also served as a link between the musical worlds of the USA and Europe, facilitating American tours for European orchestras under Karajan, Walter, Bernstein, and others, and recommending young American artists for European opera houses. After his death in 1963, his work was continued by his wife Clara, who also made several generous institutional bequests in his name, including the André Mertens Galleries for Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

      Bernard Geis (1960), (New York) - Illustrated with photographs. Truman's account of his experiences after leaving the White House. Copy #881 of 1000 SIGNED by the author on the limitation page. It is likely that less than the stated 1000 were published as we have personally seen close to 200 examples of the unbound limitation sheet that were signed. In any case an increasingly scarce issue of this book, especially in this condition. Fine, without glassine, in a Near Fine slipcase [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Inscribed Photograph Signed.

      Known as "Gentleman Jim," this influential Country Western singer of the '50s and '60s achieved great popularity with such hits as "He'll Have to Go" (1960); he died at age 40 in a plane crash in Tennessee. Color IPS (verso), heavy stock 3½" X 5½", n.p., n.d. Near fine. Handsome color picture postcard issued by RCA Victor Records, the recto featuring a nice half-length portrait of Reeves in tie and red sweater. Verso features message and address portions, and across this, in bold large script as red as his sweater, Reeves writes, "To / Donald / Best of luck always, / Gratefully, / Jim Reeves." The signature itself, which runs from the lower left corner to the upper right corner, measures a full 5½"! A superb example of this rarity.

        Call It Sleep

      Paterson, NJ: Pageant Books, Inc, 1960. - Second edition. INSCRIBED by the author to a prominent New York literary editor (name on request), "For the efforts you made on behalf of this book, which Peter Mayer continued." Mayer has had a very distinguished career in publishing, but before moving on to head Pocket Books and Penguin worldwide he worked at Avon in the 1960s, so we presume he had some responsibility in their producing the first mass market paperback of this novel so for the first time it could beeasily read by a wide audience, and thus became more generally known and acclaimed. Near Fine clean copy, no bookplates, no owner signature or marks, no soiling, but with slight rubbing, wear at spine ends; in a VG Minus dust jacket that is clean, and now held with rest of jacket within an acid-free mylar protective sleeve; jacket with edge chips, especially at and near spine top, where the deepest chip descends to a maximum of 0.5 inch. First published in the Depression this work was praised by New York authors and critics and remembered by them and their friends over the next quarter of a century, but this edition was the first chance most post-war readers across America had to read the book for themselves.
