The Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents. Travels and Explorations of the Jesuit Missionaries in New France, 1610 - 1791. The original French, Latin and Italian texts, with English translations and notes, illustrated by portraits, maps and facsimiles.

New York. Pageant Book Company. 1959. - 8vo, 23cm, facsimile reprint limited to 500 sets, 73 volumes in 36., black cloth, crimson title panels and gilt titles, top edges red, a fine clean set. () Jesuit Relations (Relations des j‚suites), the voluminous annual documents sent from the Canadian mission of the French Jesuits of the Society of Jesus to its Paris office, 1632 - 1673, compiled by missionaries at their stations in New France (America) between 1632 and1673, edited by their Quebec superior, and printed in France by Sebastien Cramoisy. As a result of Cardinal Richelieu's decision to enlist the Jesuits in colonizing French North America, the early history of settlement was systematically and colourfully documented by priests attempting to convert the Indians and also to attract support at home for their project. The journals and letters of Paul Le Jeune, Jerome Lalemant, Jean De Brebeuf and Paul Ragueneau, among others, dramatize tribal warfare in Huronia and the day-to-day life of colonists in Acadia; these are supplemented by relations of Jesuit participation in colonial matters throughout the New World. Invaluable as ethnographic and documentary sources, the Jesuit Relations were avidly and widely read in the 18th century, along with the works of Cartier and Champlain, as exciting travel literature. Published originally in Paris in annual volumes, they were translated and edited by R. G. Thwaites in 73 volumes as The Jesuit Relations and Allied Documents, Travels and Explorations of the Jesuit Missionaries in New France 1610-1791 (1896-1901; limited to 750 sets), reprinted in 1959, presenting annotated parallel versions of his translations and the French, Latin and Italian original texts. See bibliography by J. C. McCoy, Jesuit Relations of Canada, 1632-1673(1937, repr. 1973). They are invaluable as historical sources for French exploration and Indian relations and also as a record of the various Indian tribes of the region before the influence of settlers and missionaries had changed them.         Goldfinger - SIGNED BY THE THREE BOND GIRLS

Jonathan Cape, London 1959 - HARDBACK - A near fine book that has clean black boards, with bright gilt coins to the front board and with bright lettering to the spine. The book is very tightly bound with no spine leaning. Internally, the pages are clean with just a touch of very light foxing to the page block, when the book is closed. There is a neat contempary Inscription to the front end paper. The book is a little special, as it has been signed by the three main Bond girls who starred in the 1964 movie Goldfinger. The actress signatures have been signed to the half title page. These are Shirley Eaton, Honor Blackman and Tania Mallett. Each of the actresses have also signed their character names underneath their signatures. The dust wrapper is in very good or better condition. Correctly priced at 15s.net to the front flap. Lightly toned to the spine, with very light chipping to the spine tip. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Seven Vintage Hong Kong Police Department Photographs Used as Illustrations in Hess's "Chasing the Dragon: A Report on Drug Addiction in Hong Kong" (1965)]

np [ca. 1959], Hong Kong - Seven glossy back and white photographs produced by the Hong Kong Police Department's Narcotics Bureau. Each photo approximately 5" x 7", mounted, captioned, and credited on a page of original manuscript (all images credited to H.K. Government Information Services, dated 1959), with instructions for placement below test. Fine condition. A copy of Hess' finished book is also provided. A group of rarely seen images documenting heroin use and manufacture during the height of Hong Kong's dominance in the 1950s world heroin trade and prepared for use in Albert Hess' 1965 book CHASING THE DRAGON (provided). Photos are titled "Woman Smoking Heroin by "Chasing the Dragon," "Heroin Divan Built of Bamboo and Matting in Dense Undergrowth on a Hillside," "Heroin Users Preparing to Smoke in a Divan," "Paraphernalia of a Hong Kong Heroin User"; "Heroin Factory in the Bathroom of a Hong Kong House"; "Another Heroin Factory in a Home"; "Roof Dwellers On Top of an Apartment Building in the Wan Chai District of Victoria." There were no fewer then 15 illustrations total in Hess' finished work, so these seven images are by no means complete. However, they do show several revisions in captioning and pagination from final published version. A compelling and frank visual documentary account of 1950s drug culture.
