Deutscher Maler und Grafiker, bedeutender Vertreter der Dresdner Malerei in den 1950er und 60er Jahren. Nach einer Elektrikerlehre 1930-33 Studium an der Kunstakademie Dresden bei Richard Müller und Hermann Dittrich, später bei Ferdinand Dorsch und Max Feldbauer. 1933 verließ er die Akademie aus Protest gegen die Entlassung von Otto Dix. Danach Arbeit als freier Künstler und Reisen nach Italien (Venedig, Florenz, Rom, Neapel, Mailand & Gardasee), die Schweiz und schließlich 1937 Paris. 1940 Kriegsdienst an der Russlandfront, 1945 Amputation des rechten Unterschenkels infolge einer Verwundung. August 1945 Rückkehr aus russischer Kriegsgefangenschaft nach Dresden. 1953 erste Versuche mit Aquatintaradierung, die er forthin besonders pflegte (insgesamt über 1000 Radierungen). Organisierte mangels offizieller Ausstellungsmöglichkeiten die berühmten 'Dachboden-Ausstellungen' in seinem Atelier im Dresdner Wallgässchen. Wegen dem Bild 'Straße der Befreiung' 1958 Ausschluß aus dem Verband Bildender Künstler. Weilte während dem Mauerbau 1961 mit seiner Familie in Holland und blieb im Westen, das Werk wurde in Dresden beschlagnahmt und blieb bis 1990 unzugänglich. Arbeitete dann in Niederbayern, wo er sich, vereinsamt, verarmt und erblindet, das Leben nahm..

Fair. - sc - An original 17 inch high by 12 inch wide black & white flyer designed and illustrated by Red Grooms for the series of Happenings which took place at Reuben Gallery from January 8 through the 11th, 1960 and the overlapping exhibition of Red Grooms' works displayed at the gallery from January 9 through the 28th of that year. One half of the flyer lists the 3 performance art events scheduled for the evenings of January 8th through the 11th, boldly titled in facsimile of the artist's handwriting within a heavy black frame. Illustrated with what appears to be an arm reaching out for a ball at the left of the frame. "Happenings at the Reuben Gallery: Art in a New Medium produced before a seated audience" is additionally printed in type within the frame, and the dates and relevant information is printed along the bottom: "4 evenings January 8.9.10, 11 at 8:30 p.m. Admission by Advance Reservation Only / Write: Reuben Gallery 61 Fourth Avenue N.Y.C. 3 N.Y. Phone OR-41136 min. contrib. $1.50". Depicted upside down on the other half of the sheet is a bold black & white illustration of one of Red Groom's paintings of a man in a wide brimmed hat reaching out with his hand, the whole heavily scribbled out with bold black lines in Grooms inimitable style with the words "Red Grooms Jan 9 - Jan 28" boldly written at left of the image. The sheet is folded twice horizontally and once vertically for mailing. It is addressed in ink to "Brata" on the verso with Reuben Gallery's return address and a 1959 postmarked US postage stamp. The flyer is soiled with creases to the edges, several pinholes to two of the corners, a short tear along the edge of one fold and some damage and rough short tears to the left edge not affecting the text. A bold powerful event flyer. The event flyer advertised performances of Red Grooms' "Fireman's Dream" (later titled "The Magic Train Ride"), Allan Kaprow's "The Big Laugh", and Robert Whitman's "Small Cannon" in addition to an exhibition of Red Grooms' art work.A rare event flyer for an early "happening", a term coined by Allan Kaprow to describe these early performance art events.The art exhibit held in conjunction with the performances was Red Grooms first solo show.The flyer is addressed to the Brata gallery, located at 89 E. 10th street, which was itself significant as one of the 10th Street galleries that operated co-operatively in Manhattan's East Village. These artist run galleries operated on low budgets were the avant-garde alternative to the conservative 57th Street galleries.In its short life (October 1959 to April 1961), the Reuben Gallery, founded by Anita Reuben as "an outpost for human image in a sea of Abstract Expressionism", helped launch the careers of many of the important artists of the period. George Brecht, Jim Dine, Claes Oldenburg, and George Segal were among the many modern artists whose works were exhibited by the Reuben.In a 2012 article published by The New York Times about the Pace Gallery's exhibition entitled "Happenings: New York, 1958-1963" Red Grooms states that "All of us were painters or makers of something. I guess we all had a knack for doing something theatrical, and there was a certain sort of movement in painting at that time. Pollock was a prime influence...." and further describes his work "I was enamored with all sorts of theater-- circuses, carnivals, ice shows, things on television. In high school assemblies I would do skits; I'd come out in a tutu and do a pratfall. So my Happenings were physical as well. Also present is a pristine fold-out illustrated table, with line drawings of various styles of archaic bronzes and placing them as to geography and era. The book with no remainder marks.       London: Jonathan Cape. 1959. Sixth printing of the 1954 first edition. Signed by Ian Fleming. Original cloth in dustwrapper. A superb near fine, clean, bright and tight copy, the lightest of bumping to the spine tips, the contents complete and without foxing. With the ?"Four Oaks Farm?" bookplate of film producer Stan Meyer to the front free endpaper. Complete with the very good rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper which has a small chip to the bottom of the spine where it meets the back panel, which is a little dusty. Not price-clipped; 10s 6d net. Unusually for this printing, the dustwrapper is identical to that of the first edition, third state (rear flap blank, back panel with advert for Casino Royale, the front flap with the artist credit directly underneath the publisher?'s blurb). Signed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper. Provenance: From the library of Stanley and Dodo Meyer. Stanley Meyer, a producer at Warner Brothers, had in 1956 expressed an interest in buying an option on Live and Let Die and Moonraker. At the time of presentation he was producer and co-owner of the legendary Dragnet, the most successful police series on US television.

        ORIGINAL HAPPENINGS EVENT FLYER ILLUSTRATED BY RED GROOMS FOR THE JANUARY 1960 "HAPPENINGS AT THE REUBEN GALLERY", featuring "Fireman's Dream" by Red Grooms, "The Big Laugh" by Allan Kaprow, and "Small Cannon" by Robert Whitman.

      New York: Reuben Gallery, (1959). (1959) - - sc - An original 17 inch high by 12 inch wide black & white flyer designed and illustrated by Red Grooms for the series of Happenings which took place at Reuben Gallery from January 8 through the 11th, 1960 and the overlapping exhibition of Red Grooms' works displayed at the gallery from January 9 through the 28th of that year. One half of the flyer lists the 3 performance art events scheduled for the evenings of January 8th through the 11th, boldly titled in facsimile of the artist's handwriting within a heavy black frame. Illustrated with what appears to be an arm reaching out for a ball at the left of the frame. "Happenings at the Reuben Gallery: Art in a New Medium produced before a seated audience" is additionally printed in type within the frame, and the dates and relevant information is printed along the bottom: "4 evenings January 8.9.10, 11 at 8:30 p.m. Admission by Advance Reservation Only / Write: Reuben Gallery 61 Fourth Avenue N.Y.C. 3 N.Y. Phone OR-41136 min. contrib. $1.50". Depicted upside down on the other half of the sheet is a bold black & white illustration of one of Red Groom's paintings of a man in a wide brimmed hat reaching out with his hand, the whole heavily scribbled out with bold black lines in Grooms inimitable style with the words "Red Grooms Jan 9 - Jan 28" boldly written at left of the image. The sheet is folded twice horizontally and once vertically for mailing. It is addressed in ink to "Brata" on the verso with Reuben Gallery's return address and a 1959 postmarked US postage stamp. The flyer is soiled with creases to the edges, several pinholes to two of the corners, a short tear along the edge of one fold and some damage and rough short tears to the left edge not affecting the text. A bold powerful event flyer. The event flyer advertised performances of Red Grooms' "Fireman's Dream" (later titled "The Magic Train Ride"), Allan Kaprow's "The Big Laugh", and Robert Whitman's "Small Cannon" in addition to an exhibition of Red Grooms' art work.A rare event flyer for an early "happening", a term coined by Allan Kaprow to describe these early performance art events.The art exhibit held in conjunction with the performances was Red Grooms first solo show.The flyer is addressed to the Brata gallery, located at 89 E. 10th street, which was itself significant as one of the 10th Street galleries that operated co-operatively in Manhattan's East Village. These artist run galleries operated on low budgets were the avant-garde alternative to the conservative 57th Street galleries.In its short life (October 1959 to April 1961), the Reuben Gallery, founded by Anita Reuben as "an outpost for human image in a sea of Abstract Expressionism", helped launch the careers of many of the important artists of the period. George Brecht, Jim Dine, Claes Oldenburg, and George Segal were among the many modern artists whose works were exhibited by the Reuben.In a 2012 article published by The New York Times about the Pace Gallery's exhibition entitled "Happenings: New York, 1958-1963" Red Grooms states that "All of us were painters or makers of something. I guess we all had a knack for doing something theatrical, and there was a certain sort of movement in painting at that time. Pollock was a prime influence." and further describes his work "I was enamored with all sorts of theater-- circuses, carnivals, ice shows, things on television. In high school assemblies I would do skits; I'd come out in a tutu and do a pratfall. So my Happenings were physical as well.         KRAPP’S LAST TAPE and EMBERS

      London: Faber & Faber. 1959. First edition, first printing. Original card covers. INSCRIBED by the author, ?"For Pat Magee / In friendship / Sam. Beckett / Paris Xmas / 1959?". Very much his working copy with underlining and various inscriptions / diagrams in Magee?'s hand. From the condition, one could assume that he carried it around in his back pocket for the 20 years following presentation, the covers are loose, chipped and worn but the pages are generally clean and without tears. Housed in purpose-made quarter black morocco solander box by The Chelsea Bindery. Patrick Magee, an Irish actor renowned for his stage work in plays by Pinter and Beckett and films including A Clockwork Orange had not yet met Samuel Beckett in early 1958, when Beckett began a short piece (running to little more than ten minutes in performance) with the working title ?'The Magee Monologue?'. Beckett had heard a recording of a radio performance of All That Fall and embarked on a piece written specifically for Magee. The piece would be re-titled Krapp?'s Last Tape and Beckett and Magee would become lifelong collaborators, friends and drinking companions; the dedication of this copy, from the author to the actor for whom the part, and piece, was written, marks the beginning of that professional and personal relationship. A landmark copy of one of the most significant plays of the twentieth century.

Light fading to top edge of boards. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper by Cecil Beaton to his friend Mark Boxer (1931?-1988), "To Mark - with infinite gratitude for your great contribution. Blessings, Cecil, London 1959". Mark Boxer designed the layout of the present title and of The Face of the World (1957), a scrapbook of Beaton's work from the 1940s and 50s . Boxer had a long and varied career in the publishing industry and at the time of his death was the editor-in-chief of Tatler. Boxer was also a political cartoonist who co-authored with George Melly the Simon and Joanna Stringalong series, a satire of the NW1 intelligentsia, which appeared first in The Times and then in The Guardian. Beaton and Boxer sat for each other's portraits on several occasions, the most striking example being Beaton's undated monochrome watercolour of the young Boxer.
