Presentation Photo Album to American Ambassador H. Freeman Matthews from the American International School in Vienna

Vienna: American International School. [1959?]. Oblong quarto. Brown morocco with the gilt name of the American Ambassador to Austria, H. Freeman Matthews. Some rubbing and spotting on the boards, else near fine; internally fine. 27 large silver gelatin images tipped in, with printed captions facing each image. First leaf is a printed presentation leaf signed by the President, Superintendent, and President of the Student Body stating that Matthews: "... through foresight, wisdom and courage made this school possible." The images are mixed between candid shots in the classroom and pictures of Matthews breaking ground and the ceremonies surrounding that event. The school was founded to accommodate the children of American and Canadian diplomats in Vienna, and exists to this day. Matthews had previously served as Ambassador to the Netherlands, and served as Acting Secretary of State for a grand total of one day under Eisenhower upon the departure of Dean Acheson. Excellent quality photographs and an interesting insight into Americans in Europe during the Cold War. .

US: Macmillan, 1959 First US edition, Near Fine book with very slight spine roll, bumps all corners with most significant being a moderate bump/crease at bottom corner of back panel; in a Very Good to Near Fine jacket that has slight edge and corner wear, with the bump/crease at back corner, the spine is lightly sun toned, thewhite back panel has mild soiling. The jacket is an unusual, early state with prices at both corners of the unclipped front flap, $2.95 at top and $3.00 at bottom. The Macmillan US edition was printed in the UK, in a small print run that was far less than the Jonathan Cape first UK printing, and most jackets either had the $2.95 clipped or later showed just the $3.00 price at lower corner. The 1964 film based on the book was the third James Bond movie (following Dr. No and From Russia with Love) and was the first to win an Academy Award (Sound Effects). The film starred Sean Connery, Honor Blackman, Gert Frobe and Shirley Eaton and was a critical success.

The French writer Andre Chamson wrote, "Sylvia carried pollen like a bee. She cross-fertilized these writers…She did more to link England, the United States, Ireland, and France than four great ambassadors combined. It was not merely for the pleasure of friendship that Joyce, Hemingway, Bryher, and so many others often took the path to Shakespeare and Company in the heart of Paris.

1959 Conceptual Drawing of a Sports Car

Mixed media on paper. Initialled, "G. L." 1959 concept design that embodies many features of the 1960's Chevrolets George Lawson was a long time Detroit designer, who contributed to the Tucker, particularly the Torpedo, as well as to many General Motors' designs. His imaginative renderings reflect the optimism of the American automotive industry as we entered the "Space Age". The drawing is signed "G. L." and the attribution is based on similar drawings. The car is depicted front and back, so that all its charms can be observed, including the angled back fins, dual headlights and domed, glass top. The angled fins famously appeared in the same year on the Chevy Impala.

        Doctor Zhivago

Milan: Feltrinelli,, [1959]. Octavo. Original pale green boards, titles to spine and front board in black. With the dust jacket. Gift inscription to front free endpaper. Minor fading to spine ends, endpapers and top edge lightly spotted; a very good copy in the toned jacket with minor loss to spine ends, small chip to head and foot of rear panel and short closed tear to head of rear flap. Third edition, first printing, in Russian of one of the most controversial literary works of the Soviet period. It was published in late April or early May 1959, and is preceded by the Dutch and US editions of September 1958 and January 1959 respectively. Doctor Zhivago was first published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957 after Pasternak signed a contract with him on 30 June 1956, granting the Italian publisher the copyright for translation. The history of the book's publication in Russian is somewhat tangled: the first edition in Russian was printed by the Dutch publisher Mouton without Feltrinelli's permission, as part of a covert CIA publishing and propaganda program, and the US edition was to be likewise published without acknowledgement of Feltrinelli's copyright. However, after the legal furore surrounding the publication of the Dutch edition, that decision was reversed, and the US edition was subsequently published with Feltrinelli's full consent and collaboration. Feltrinelli intended to publish this edition concurrently with the US publication, but due to printing delays his book was not published in Italy until four months after it appeared in the US.

        The Beast Master

Harcourt Brace and Company, New York 1959 - First edition. Foxing confined to the endpapers (and jacket flaps), else fine in very near fine dustwrapper. Signed by the author on the title page. Probably the most popular book by the "Grand Dame of Science-Fiction" (the Cleveland-born author assumed a male name to better sell her works), a sword and sorcery epic that was the uncredited source for the less than classic but mildly amusing 1982 film *The Beastmaster* with Marc Singer, Tanya Roberts, and Rip Torn, and the television series it spawned. Scarce in nice condition, uncommon signed, and very seldom found with both. See this book in 3D on our site. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Engraved Christmas card titled "Moor," made by Kurt Seligmann, inscribed to Amos Vogel in 1959

N.p.: N.p., 1959. Hand tinted woodcut engraving by Kurt Seligmann in 1959 as a Christmas card, titled "Moor," SIGNED and dated in pencil by Seligmann just below the image, and further INSCRIBED to Amos Vogel: "We loved your card - with Jean Durand! / Season's greetings / Arlette and Kurt." Kurt Leopold Seligmann (1900-1962) was a Swiss-American surrealist painter and engraver. He was known for his fantastic imagery of medieval troubadors and knights engaged in macabre rituals and inspired partially by the carnival held annually in his native Basel, Switzerland. Amos Vogel (1921-2012) was one of the most influential cineastes in New York City. He is best known for his bestselling book "Film as a Subversive Art" (1974) and as the founder of the New York City avantgarde ciné-club Cinema 16 (1947-1963), where he was the first programmer to present films by Roman Polanski, John Cassavetes, Nagisa Oshima, Jacques Rivette and Alain Resnais as well as early and important screenings by American avant-gardists of the time like Stan Brakhage, Maya Deren, James Broughton, Kenneth Anger, Sidney Peterson, Bruce Conner, Carmen D'Avino and many others. In 1963, together with Richard Roud, he founded the New York Film Festival, and served as its program director until 1968. In 1973, Vogel started the Annenberg Cinematheque at the University of Pennsylvania and was eventually given a Chair for film studies at the Annenberg School for Communication, where he taught and lectured for two decades. 8 x 7.25 inches. Several tiny pinholes in the top half of the woodcut, from the years when the card hung in Vogel's home, else Near Fine.
