1959 - AVEDON, Richard. Observations. Photographs by Richard Avedon. Comments by Truman Capote. New York: Simon and Schuster, (1959). Folio, original white paper-covered boards, original acetate dust wrapper, original slipcase. $5200.First edition of Avedon’s stellar book of portraiture, a distinctive association copy warmly inscribed to film producer Arthur Hornblow, Jr. and his wife Leonora (Bubbles), “For Bubbles & Arthur with admiration, Dick,” featuring commentary by Truman Capote and over 100 photogravures.“Richard Avedon set the standard for portraiture and fashion photography in the second half of the 20th century… His photographs… virtually jump off the page with a signature brand of visual impact” (New York Times). “Observations is the culmination of a creative collaboration between Avedon and Alexey Brodovitch that began in 1945, when the imperial art director hired the 22-year-old photographer… as the youngest member of his team at Harper’s Bazaar” (Roth, 148). Avedon’s “later adoption of a seamless white studio background for most of his fashion and portrait photography was at least partly inspired by Mr. Brodovitch’s characteristic use of ‘white space,’ a means of making the subject seem suspended and weightless on the page” (Times). Not long after Capote and Avedon finished their work on Observations, they again collaborated in documenting the story of a brutal murder in Kansas, In Cold Blood (1965). This rare presentation/association copy warmly inscribed by Avedon to Arthur Hornblow, Jr., “one of Hollywood’s preeminent movie makers” (New York Times), and his wife Leonora Schinasi Hornblow (“Bubbles”). A lawyer and innovative Broadway producer, Hornblow earned four Oscar-nominations as a film producer, including Gaslight (1944) and Witness for the Prosecution (1957). Open Book, 174.Images clean and bright, light soiling, edge-wear to near-fine book; some chipping to edges of acetate, moderate rubbing to original slipcase. A near-fine association copy, scarce complete with original acetate wrapper and slipcase. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Serving as head of the Commission for the Relief in Belgium,as President Woodrow Wilson's U.S. Food Administrator(1917-1919) in charge of voluntary rationing, and director general of the American Relief Administration in Europe (1919-1920) made him such a popular figure that both parties courted him as a presidential nominee in 1920. Harding and Calvin Coolidge, transforming that department between 1921 and 1928 into one of the most important and well-publicized federal departments.         Anni Albers, »Runner«.

(Annals of Mathematical Studies, Volume 40). Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1959. Large octavo, original orange printed paper wrappers. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $2800.First edition of this important paper by the Nobel Prize-winning economist, in the journal in which it originally appearedâ€"his own copy of the journal, with his ownership signature on the front wrapper.John C. Harsanyi won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics along with John F. Nash Jr. and Reinhard Selten “for their pioneering analysis of equilibria in the theory of non-cooperative games.” “The arbitration schemes of Nash and Shapley were generalized by J.C. Harsanyi” (Hazewinkel, Encyclopedia of Mathematics, 237-38). “In 1956, Harsanyi showed that Nash’s bargaining solution could be derived from an earlier theory of bargaining by the Danish economist Frederik Zeuthen (1930). Then in 1959 [the present paper] and 1963 John Harsanyi published papers to show how the Nash bargaining solution and the Shapley value could be unified into one general solution concept that could be applied to any cooperative game with complete information” (Roger Myerson, “Learning Game Theory from John Harsanyi,” August 31, 2000). Other contributors to this volume include Aumann, Kalisch, von Neumann (“On the Theory of Games of Strategy,” 13-42), Shapley, Shubik, et al. Just a bit of mild rubbing and toning to paper wrappers.       London: Jonathan Cape, 1959. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Small name plate to the front gutter, fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing to the extremities. A very nice example. Goldfinger originally bore the title The Richest Man in the World. Based upon American gold tycoon Charles W. Englehard, Fleming named his villain after British architect Erno Goldfinger. When the actual Goldfinger found out his name was being used, he threatened to sue Fleming, and the matter was ultimately settled out of court. A best-seller upon its release, it became the third James Bond film in 1964 starring Sean Connery.

        The Naked Lunch

Paris: The Olympia Press, 1959. First edition. About Fine/About Fine. An about Fine copy in like dust jacket. There is a small toned area at the lower, inner margin that runs through the first 25 pages, mostly visible from the lower edge of the closed page-block. Otherwise, a Fine copy. In a dust jacket with very minor wear at the spine ends, otherwise Fine. First printing with the green border on the title page and the original publisher's price of 1500 Francs on both the rear cover of the book and the rear flap. No price defacement, stickers or stamps as is usually found on later states of the book and jacket. Quite scarce in this condition and in the first state. William S. Burroughs' infamous novel meanders through the absurd and perverse in an improbable, non-linear narrative. While the adventure jumps from fictional dictatorships, to Mexico, to space, much of the book remains inspired by Burroughs' own drug addiction and his friendships with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, core Beat Generation members. Upon its publication in 1959, "The Naked Lunch" was banned from numerous cities though its literary significance was later recognized by Time magazine and the book was included in their Top 100 English speaking novels from 1923 to 2005.         1959 Conceptual Drawing of a Sports Car

Mixed media on paper. Initialled, "G. L." 1959 concept design that embodies many features of the 1960's Chevrolets George Lawson was a long time Detroit designer, who contributed to the Tucker, particularly the Torpedo, as well as to many General Motors' designs. His imaginative renderings reflect the optimism of the American automotive industry as we entered the "Space Age". The drawing is signed "G. L." and the attribution is based on similar drawings. The car is depicted front and back, so that all its charms can be observed, including the angled back fins, dual headlights and domed, glass top. The angled fins famously appeared in the same year on the Chevy Impala.

        Doctor Zhivago

Milan: Feltrinelli,, [1959]. Octavo. Original pale green boards, titles to spine and front board in black. With the dust jacket. Gift inscription to front free endpaper. Minor fading to spine ends, endpapers and top edge lightly spotted; a very good copy in the toned jacket with minor loss to spine ends, small chip to head and foot of rear panel and short closed tear to head of rear flap. Third edition, first printing, in Russian of one of the most controversial literary works of the Soviet period. It was published in late April or early May 1959, and is preceded by the Dutch and US editions of September 1958 and January 1959 respectively. Doctor Zhivago was first published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957 after Pasternak signed a contract with him on 30 June 1956, granting the Italian publisher the copyright for translation. The history of the book's publication in Russian is somewhat tangled: the first edition in Russian was printed by the Dutch publisher Mouton without Feltrinelli's permission, as part of a covert CIA publishing and propaganda program, and the US edition was to be likewise published without acknowledgement of Feltrinelli's copyright. However, after the legal furore surrounding the publication of the Dutch edition, that decision was reversed, and the US edition was subsequently published with Feltrinelli's full consent and collaboration. Feltrinelli intended to publish this edition concurrently with the US publication, but due to printing delays his book was not published in Italy until four months after it appeared in the US.
