        Rome

1959 - KLEIN, William. Rome: The City and Its People. Paris: Editions du Seuil, (1959). Tall quarto, original black cloth, photographic endpapers, original photographic dust jacket. $7000.First edition, French issue, the second volume in Klein's acclaimed series of four "city" books, a distinctive association copy inscribed on the page before the title page to longtime friend, fellow photographer Peter Turnley, "To Peter, ROME SWEET ROME, en toute amitié, William [line drawn] William Klein Paris 2005," with over 130 vivid, high-contrast heliogravures (many double-page), scarce in original dust jacket.According to Fellini, "this is the best Rome there is and Klein is the best photographer there is. He knows Rome like a book and this is it." "Cheesy, delirious, pure Pop art," William Klein's Rome continues the "raw, kinetic and utterly original" innovations of Life is Good (1956) (Roth, 140-41). His genius resides in an unerring ability to remind "us that much great, serious art is often about play, achieved simply by experimenting with the possibilities of the material. Forget trance and witness-the revels are the thing" (Parr & Badger I:243). Rome is the second volume in Klein's "city" series, "four books of photography which shook the very roots of this medium's young tradition". filled with raw, grainy, swirling yet abrupt images, which visually describe these cities in a manner never previously seen before" (Christian Sciene Monitor). First edition, French issue; London, New York and Rome editions published same year. Text in French. Open Book, 178. See Icons of Photography, 120. This rare association copy is from the collection of Peter Turnley, renowned photographer for Newsweek and contributing editor for Harper's Magazine who has covered "almost every important international news event of the last 15 years" (New York Times). Warmly inscribed by Klein in Paris, where both photographers are based.Images clean and fresh, front inner paper hinge starting but sound; some chipping with loss to edges of bright, unrestored dust jacket. An exceptional association copy in extremely good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Shuttered Room and Other Pieces (First Edition, review copy and publisher's file copy)

Arkham House, Sauk City, WI 1959 - First Edition. REVIEW COPY, with tipped-in publisher's slip at the front endpaper. A few notations on the jacket indicate that this copy was a publisher's file copy: a sticker on the spine with the number "44887" in pencil, the same number in pencil on the jacket front panel, and stamped in blue ink on the front pastedown. Several notations and corrections in holograph pencil appear throughout, the word "omit," among others, found on several leaves at the heading. Many numerical notations in pencil appear at the table of contents, suggesting rearrangement for subsequent printings. Very Good plus in a Very Good dust jacket. Extremities lightly rubbed and bumped, slight fraying at a couple of corners, and a few leaves with tiny corner creases. Jacket moderately toned (mostly at the rear panel and at the verso), lightly rubbed, with a few tiny closed tears and brief chipping at the extremities, and a small bruise to the rear panel at the spine fold. Overall, an interesting and perhaps unique copy of the fifth Arkham House collection of Lovecraft's work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Goldfinger (a James Bond novel).

London: Jonathan Cape, 1959.. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's black cloth with gilt-stamped 'skull'. Pictorial dust-wrapper by Richard Chopping. A lightly used copy which shows extremely well, with a little dustiness/spotting to top edge, no inscriptions or price-clipping, jacket with a few chips and tears now expertly restored. The seventh of author Ian Fleming's fourteen original Bond books which was was adapted as the third film (1964) in the EON Productions' 007 series and was the third to star Sean Connery as British Secret Service agent, Commander James Bond. To say it was successful is a little wide of the mark; it changed popular culture, being the first film to really capitalise on merchandising, and distracting a whole generation with glamourous espionage and international mystery as opposed to the bleak reality of the Cold War. Thunderbirds, The Avengers, U.N.C.L.E., Mission Impossible, Danger Man, Jason King, The Prisoner, The Persuaders et al, all begin here. Goldfinger was also the blueprint for the Bond movie franchise the next two decades; the plot, the sets, the villains and henchmen, the cars, the girls and the gadgets were all over the top, as was the budget- but nothing compared to the collosal box office returns!

        Lyrics on several occasions.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf,, 1959. A selection of stage & screen lyrics written for sundry situations; and now arranged in arbitrary categories. To which have been added many informative annotations & disquisitions on their why & wherefore, their whom-for, their how; and matters associative. Octavo. Original brown cloth backed boards, green cloth sides, titles and decoration gilt to spine and front, top edge dyed red. With the dust jacket. A really excellent copy with the dust jacket a little spine-tanned and a trifle rubbed at the corners. First edition, first printing, presentation copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "For Louis Aborn - with all best - From Ira Gershwin". Louis H. Aborn (1912-2005) was the President from 1956 of Tams-Whitmark Music Library, the largest collection of printed and manuscript music then in existence. During Aborn's presidency Tams-Whitmark acquired rights in many of the most popular American musical stage plays and made those musicals available for presentation by schools, community theatres, and professional theatres throughout the world. He was also instrumental in developing a number of works for the musical stage including The Wizard of Oz, Meet me in St Louis, and Calamity Jane. He had close relationships to many of the great Broadway composers and writers of the 20th century, and his own presentation copy of Gershwin's lyrical anthology makes for a great association.

        Arabian Sands

London: Longmans, Green and Co, 1959. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Wilfred Thesiger on the title page, with a contemporary signature. An excellent example in a near fine dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities. Map unopened in the inside pocket of the rear pastedown. Though educated at Eton and Oxford, Wilfred Thesiger was repulsed by the softness and rigidity of Western life-"the machines, the calling cards, the meticulously aligned streets." In the spirit of T. E. Lawrence, he set out to explore the deserts of Arabia, traveling among peoples who had never seen a European and considered it their duty to kill Christian infidels. His now-classic account is invaluable to understanding the modern Middle East. "Following worthily in the tradition of Burton, Lawrence, Philby and Thomas, [Arabian Sands] is, very likely, the book about Arabia to end all books about Arabia" (The Daily Telegraph, London).

        Milano, Italia

Lerici, 1959. Prima e unica edizione. Direzione grafica di Giulio Confalonieri e Ilio Negri, schema di impaginazione di Giuseppe Trevisani. "At the time he made Milano Carrieri was associated with the italian neo-realist photographers, such as Cesare Columbo and Mario di Biasi, before he went on to become a distinguished photographer of sculpture. He made books of other cities, but none this extreme. Its concentration on the seamier side of life makes Milano one of the most important works of the neorealist tendency of the 1950s" (Parr / Badger). "Volevo produrre una città non riprodurla. Niente "battute fotografiche". Niente formalismo. Niente inchieste. Solo scelta di un linguaggio e di un racconto che stiano al di là della realtà oggettiva: e vengano proposte da una particolare regia, in immagini meno lente possibili. All'origine una sorta di rabbia nei confronti di ciò che è scontato. Il mito della metropoli. Rabbia di fronte alle parvenze e rabbia anche per ciò che già sapevo sulle "tecniche di ripresa" (dal risvolto di sovraccoperta). Parr / Badger, The Photobook: A History, I, p. 214. Italiano
