        [Portfolio]: Poems [Eight Northwest Poets]

Portland: Portland Art Museum. 1959. First. Portfolio. Eight gatefold pamphlets, each made from folio sheets folded twice to form eight pages. All housed in an envelope hand labeled "Eight Northwest Poets" along with each poet's name. Near fine with very light toning and a chip to the corner of one pamphlet (Stafford) in a very good envelope toned and chipped at the corners.A series of eight matched portfolios published by the Portland Art Museum for the Northwest Poetry Meeting on July 9-12, 1959 and held in connection with an art exhibit the following week. Also included are the first separately published works of Richard Hugo and Carolyn Kizer with art from Louise Bunce and Hilda Morris respectively. Additional contributors include poets John Haislip, Carol Hall, Kenneth O. Hanson, Robert Huff, and David Wagoner; and artists Margaret Tompkins, James McGarrell, Milton Wilson, Tony Mellara, and William Ivey. While individual issues from this important portfolio appear on the market, complete sets are rare with only four sets listed on OCLC. .

        The Naked Lunch

Paris: The Olympia Press, 1959. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. A small black ink spot on the lower edge of the page block, otherwise in excellent condition. In a dust jacket that is slighly toned along the spine. First printing with the green border on the title page and the original publisher's price of 1500 Francs on both the rear cover of the book and the rear flap. No price defacement, stickers or stamps as is usually found on later states of the book and jacket. Quite scarce in this condition and in the first state. William S. Burroughs' infamous novel meanders through the absurd and perverse in an improbable, non-linear narrative. While the adventure jumps from fictional dictatorships, to Mexico, to space, much of the book remains inspired by Burroughs' own drug addiction and his friendships with Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg, core Beat Generation members. Upon its publication in 1959, "The Naked Lunch" was banned from numerous cities though its literary significance was later recognized by Time magazine and the book was included in their Top 100 English speaking novels from 1923 to 2005. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

Notebook containing film strips, technical notes and tests results for film and camera settings, including "Multiple SIDosis" (1970)

N.p.: N.p., 1959. Notebook belonging to legendary amateur filmmaker Sid Laverents containing 73 pages of holograph notes on various film and camera tests, lighting, settings, and other technical aspects of filmmaking made between circa 1959 and 1982. Included are 21 film strips laid or tipped into the notebook, with accompanying notations, and each generally between three to four inches in length. A single page contains what appear to be notes on timing for Laverents' landmark 1970 short film "Multiple SIDosis." A machinist and engineer by trade, Sid Lavarents began making amateur films at age 50, experimenting with various techniques. A self taught musician, he recorded himself playing a song on multiple instruments, re-exposing the film multiple times, to produce his most iconic work, "Multiple SIDosis," which was selected for inclusion by National Film Registry in 2000, where it remains one of only a small number of amateur films to be given that honor. Housed in a 4.5 x 7 inch (11 x 18 cm) faux leather notebook, with an internal metal ring binding clip. Pages generally Near Fine.

Each pamphlet paired a poet with a painter or sculptor (many of whom were important Northwest artists) who provided a cover image for each pamphlet. The most notable pamphlet comes from William Stafford and is one of his earliest separately published items, a collection of seven poems with accompanying art by Sally Haley, that predates his first professionally published book by a year. While individual issues from this important portfolio appear on the market, complete sets are rare with only four sets listed on OCLC. .

1959 - BEACH, Sylvia. Shakespeare and Company. New York: Hourcourt, Brace, 1959. Octavo, original ivory cloth, original dust jacket. $12,000.First edition of Sylvia Beach's memoir, "particularly valuable for the many insights into Joyce's work and the authentic personal views it provides of the man himself" (New York Times), a scarce presentation copy inscribed by Beach above and below the half title, "For Julian, with Sylvia's very affectionate [Shakespeare and Company] regards," in original dust jacket. It was in Sylvia Beach's legendary Paris bookshop, Shakespeare and Company, that "James Joyce's Ulysses was born." In her memoir, Shakespeare and Company, Beach tells her story "with simplicity, freshness and modesty. And in doing so she succeeds in bringing back that whole small""but intensely creative""world around her bookshop and that of her friend, Adrienne Monnier". which was the center of so much French literary activity." Her book "is particularly valuable for the many critical insights into Joyce's work and the authentic personal views it provides of the man himself." After her publication of Ulysses "on Joyce's birthday, Feb. 2, 1922, Shakespeare and Company was known to writers the world over. No one failed to call". but it is finally Joyce whose portrait remains""a shy, quiet, infinitely curious, kindly, generous man". She shows us the artist whose complex existence was given to his work". As Beach says, 'He treated people invariably as his equals" (New York Times). An excerpt, Ulysses in Paris, was printed in 1956 for private distribution to friends of the author and publisher. Ink shelf markings on spine and front free endpaper.Book near-fine, short closed tear to rear panel of dust jacket, also near-fine. A desirable inscribed copy.         Rome

1959 - KLEIN, William. Rome: The City and Its People. Paris: Editions du Seuil, (1959). Tall quarto, original black cloth, photographic endpapers, original photographic dust jacket. $7000.First edition, French issue, the second volume in Klein's acclaimed series of four "city" books, a distinctive association copy inscribed on the page before the title page to longtime friend, fellow photographer Peter Turnley, "To Peter, ROME SWEET ROME, en toute amitié, William [line drawn] William Klein Paris 2005," with over 130 vivid, high-contrast heliogravures (many double-page), scarce in original dust jacket.According to Fellini, "this is the best Rome there is and Klein is the best photographer there is. He knows Rome like a book and this is it." "Cheesy, delirious, pure Pop art," William Klein's Rome continues the "raw, kinetic and utterly original" innovations of Life is Good (1956) (Roth, 140-41). His genius resides in an unerring ability to remind "us that much great, serious art is often about play, achieved simply by experimenting with the possibilities of the material. Forget trance and witness-the revels are the thing" (Parr & Badger I:243). Rome is the second volume in Klein's "city" series, "four books of photography which shook the very roots of this medium's young tradition". filled with raw, grainy, swirling yet abrupt images, which visually describe these cities in a manner never previously seen before" (Christian Sciene Monitor). First edition, French issue; London, New York and Rome editions published same year. Text in French. Open Book, 178. See Icons of Photography, 120. This rare association copy is from the collection of Peter Turnley, renowned photographer for Newsweek and contributing editor for Harper's Magazine who has covered "almost every important international news event of the last 15 years" (New York Times). Warmly inscribed by Klein in Paris, where both photographers are based.Images clean and fresh, front inner paper hinge starting but sound; some chipping with loss to edges of bright, unrestored dust jacket. An exceptional association copy in extremely good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
