Memoirs of an Infantry Officer: original illustration, Chapter Ending, used on page 229, here drawn in colour but in the book it appears in monochrome. Originally exhibited in the Memorial exhibition after Barnett Freedman's death in 1958, and not sold on that occasion, framed attractively at that time and not examined out of the mount or frrame but apparently very good; not signed.

This item comes from the material belonging to the Estate of Barnett Freedman, which is now offered for sale; the Estate consists of proofs of images of all kinds, Christmas cards, original book designs and proofs of dust wrappers, posters, original artwork and much more. Where appropriate, items will bear the studio stamp 'Barnett Freedman Estate', a blind-stamped legend in a circle.

        Mirror for Magistrates

Anthony Blond London: Anthony Blond. (1958). First. First edition. Octavo. 172 pp. Very good with some age-toning and scattered light stains to the endpapers, else near fine, in a near fine dustwrapper with some light soiling to the top edge, and light age-toning to the inside panel. Inscribed and Signed by Gibson in a very neat hand on the title page: "For Peter Taylor, with best wishes and many thanks, Richard Gibson, Paris September 1958." Peter Taylor was one of America's best short story writers, and winner of the 1985 PEN/Faulkner Award and the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Richard Gibson was awarded the John Hay Whitney Fellowship in 1951 to pursue writing this novel. He was drafted in the army, served in Europe, and by the late 1950s had become a member of the group of African-American expatriates centered in Paris around Richard Wright and James Baldwin. In a sequence of events in 1957-58 that became known as the "Gibson Affair," the CIA allegedly employed or otherwise utilized Gibson to promote pro-French sympathies, specifically regarding Algeria's fight for independence. This was dramatized by Richard Wright in his unfinished last novel, Island of Hallucination (see Michel Fabre's The Unfinished Quest of Richard Wright). A very nice association between Gibson and Taylor. .

The Carpentered Hen, and Other Tame Creatures

Harper NY: Harper, (1958). First edition. First issue of dustwrapper, which carries the statement in the biographical blurb that Updike had "two small children." Updike's first book, a collection of lean and sly poems, among which one, titled "Ex-Basketball Player," almost seems a rough character sketch for Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom. Very faint spotting to fore edge, spine ends lightly rubbed, else fine in cloth-backed grey boards and dust wrapper.

Archie Shepp, in his forward to a later edition remarked that: "...he has created convincing, moving episodes about people who happen in the main to be of color, and he seems to know them all intrinsically...Holmes has done a great service to the music, by lifting it from the ranks of stereotyped literary criticism to a subject of truly heroic proportions". A terrific copy of this Classic. Blow your horn.. 1st Edition.

        Poems de Charles d'Orleans

One of the original sets of 1200 lithograph copies of Matisse’s original, which was done in color pencil and crayon. The text is a selection of Charles’ poems that Matisse wrote out in hand in French. He then added fleur de lis decorations and hand drawn borders, all in various colors. Slightly more than 100 pages and more than 50 original lithographs, loose in sets of four pages each, housed in illustrated wrappers. A beautiful set with only slight offsetting on some internal pages. The acetate protector on the wrappers is yellowed and has a closed tear bottom left of front cover. Signed by Matisse in pencil on the limitation page. This is copy number 778. The protective cardboard box is in Poor condition, soiled and faded, with splits at the seams and one long, folding flap detached. Even though the number produced was large, intact copies are quite rare – presumably because many copies were broken and sold separately as single Matisse lithographs. This production is widely considered one of the most important illustrated books ever done. Included is a note from M. J. Royer, Antiquarian Bookseller and Gallery of Fine and Applied Arts, Los Angeles, to “Mrs. Tarr” stating that he has located this copy in Europe. The note is dated Dec. 4, 1958; additionally there is an Invoice for the purchase dated 14 Feb. ’59. Special shipping will be required at extra cost.

        Mothers and Children

(NY, 1958). 16mo. 20ff. First edition, limited to 60 copies signed by the artist. This copy bears a presentation inscription on the colophon page to Ben Shahn and his wife, Bernarda Bryson Shahn. Illustrated with eighteen compact etchings of babies sleeping, crying, smiling, or being held by their mothers, which have been printed in a variety of muted colors. This is Schwartz’s second publication, his first effort being a portfolio of etchings for Predatory Birds, printed at the Gehenna Press the previous year. One can certainly detect a hint of Baskin’s influence on this work, from the arrangement of typographic ornaments on the letterpress-printed title page and colophon, as well as some of the stylistic cues in Schwartz’s etchings. In a presentation binding of full olive morocco tooled in blind and gilt by the Harcourt Bindery, the spine of which has toned to an even shade of tan. Apart from some light foxing to endleaves, this is a fine copy of a rare title with an important association.

Appointment with Dishonour [Signed by William H. Gage, Jr. and by George Seferis]

Boston: Little, Brown and Company, 1958. First edition. A Very Good + to Near Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing -- which preceded the UK edition, in a Very Good, bright, attractive, dust jacket (short closed tear where the upper front panel meets the spine panel, tiny hole near spine tail, some general wear), INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY WILLIAM GAGE TO NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR GEORGE SEFERIS on the title page as follows: "For George S.____________ / with esteem and / admiration / Bill Gage", and further INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS to fellow author Rex Warner on the front free endpaper as follows: "Rex Warner [underlined] / George Seferis [in Greek, followed by a 4-line poetic inscription in Greek ending with an ellipsis and after which Seferis has drawn 5 stacked curved lines]. The novel dramatizes the Cypriot Revolution against British occupation of Cyprus (a chaotic period during which many Cypriots sought the incorporation of Cyprus into Greece and which, in 1955 gave birth to the violent pro-Enosis movement known as the EOKA whose military wing, led by George Grivas, sabotaged military installations, ambushed military convoys and patrols, and assassinated British soldiers and local informers.) George Seferis first visited Cyprus in 1963 and immediately fell in love with the island. As an important Greek Diplomat who ultimately became Ambassador to the UK, Seferis spent much time and effort seeking a resolution of the Cyprus question, investing a great deal of effort and allowing his personal views to intrude on his diplomatic efforts. Also one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. British author Rex Warner, to whom Seferis has inscribed this novel, was Seferis' close friend and frequent translator. In addition to their deep relationship as friends, each man held the other in high regard, and Warner's excellent translations of his work were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Prize. Both authors were fascinated by Cyprus as, clearly, was Gage. Copies of this novel are quite uncommon, and signed copies are as rare as hen's teeth. Of course, books signed by George Seferis are far from plentiful to the market, and copies of this novel signed by Seferis, who was deeply interested in the subject matter of this work, are rare indeed. A Very Good + copy of this scarce novel centered around the Cypriot Revolution, INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY WILLIAM H. GAGE, JR. AND BY GEORGE SEFERIS. RARE.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1958 10th Impression in Original Dustjacket with Custom Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1958. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1958. The book is in Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition, with a bit of tanning to the spine of the dustjacket, very light soiling to the white areas, and only the slightest of rubs or wear to the tips and corners of the fold areas. No previous owners name or dates, nor any other writing noted. No foxing marks or offsetting noted. The map endpapers are clean and bright, unmarked. The boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with no bumped corner, and a bit of spine lean. The title verso has the full printing history up to this tenth impression of 1958. The original dustjacket is incorrectly marked the 9th impression, but would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. In 1957 (Ninth Impression book) Houghton Mifflin ordered a number of sheet sets to be imported from A&U for the US 1957 Ninth Printing, however after A&U had already printed the full run, HM backed out of part of the order due to import costs and reduced their order by 1,000 sheet sets. So A&U assumed they would have 1,000 more UK books than originally planned and as such they had Jackets produced for this overrun. Subsequently, HM changed their mind again and took the 1,000 sheet sets they had canceled, thus leaving A&U with 1,000 extra Ninth Impression Jackets. They simply used those extra jackets on the 1958 Tenth Impression Books. So there should be 1000 copies of the 1958 UK Tenth Impression book with a Ninth Impression Jacket, which would make this even more scarce than the 3,500 copies of the Tenth Impression books in the Tenth Impression Jackets. The dustjacket is not price clipped and in Very Good Plus/Near Fine condition, with only the most minor of rubbing to the edges, with a tiny bit of loss at the tips of the folds, but lacking any of the normal tears to the edges. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the top edge slightly dusty. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. A custom faux leather slipcase included, featuring the original Mountain and Dragon design by Tolkien, reflects the design on the covers of the book. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

Autograph letter signed, from Christie to Wilder regarding Wilder's movie version of "Witness For the Prosecution"

South Devon, UK, no date.. ALS, one leaf, pp.2, on Christie's note paper printed with her address. Single hole punch and staple, folded once, fine. Housed in presentation book-box. Written out by the author in blue ink; Dear Billy Wilder, Larry Bachman tells me that you never heard whether I liked your picture Witness For the Prosecution. Well- I did [underlined twice]. What's more- I enjoyed [underlined]- a thing I never suspected to when seeing a film made from one of my books! You did a wonderful job and I admire that film very much still. Most people do. So let me make amends. Yours, Agatha Christie. Superb content, and perhaps the author's only written communication with Wilder, who had directed the Oscar-nominated 1958 adaptation of her classic 1948 short story. Wilder, who was regarded as one of the most brilliant and versatile filmmakers of Hollywood's golden age, and who was nominated for eight Academy Awards (winning twice) was responsible for such acclaimed motion pictures as Sunset Boulevard, The Seven Year Itch, The Spirit of St.Louis, Stalag 17 and Some Like It Hot. Less well know are his contributions to cult 60'as films Ocean's Eleven and Casino Royale! A remarkable piece of cinema history.

N.P. CA.: Fink, 11/20/58, 1958 FOUR PAGE TLS FROM ROBERT FINK 11/20/58 to Henry Miller from his close friend Robert Fink on 8vo., off-white bond in near fine condition. "Dear Henry:- / I need two paperback Colossi very badly. One for Edie's Spanish teachers also teaches French. He was at one time a student of Wallace Folie and for some curious reason never read any of your books! So I wish to give him Colossus, since he is a nice Jewish boychik and his wife is a typical New York girl from the era when all the Yiddish mamas [during the 20's] were naming their daughters Shirley. The Gentiles used other names. . . [ask your first wife!]. Anyway the enclosed is for the Colossi. / I don't know the author of that limerick "tome". It is banned like the Tropics so I can't get one although I have tried". What follows is more about Miller's new sound system, Fink's shopping for corduroy slacks for Miller & Capri pants for Eve, a note about Nexus & 28 'dirty' limericks, Bob's naughty specialty & Miller's fascination. A curious letter signed twice -at the bottom of page 1 & page 4. Page one in very good condition with one short closed tear repaired archivally, otherwise the following pages are in fine condition. Robert Finkelstein (later Fink) was a fan, correspondent, and benefactor of Henry Miller. Their friendship strengthened when Fink and his wife Edie moved to Los Angeles from Chicago in 1949. Fink soon found an excellent job in Los Angeles and opened his own successful electronics business. The Finks visited Big Sur on weekends, sometimes taking food and other gifts for which Miller reciprocated with manuscripts and water colors. Fink offered help in Miller's attempts to help other impoverished writers who appealed to him for funds, food or a place to stay. Fink also began defending Miller against vilifying editorials, writing articles praising Miller's works and character.       New Directions (New York): New Directions. (1946, 1948, 1949, 1951, 1958). First. First editions. Five volumes. A somewhat worn set of the first editions, lacking the dustwrappers. Poet and critic Karl Shapiro's copies with his ownership signature in each of the first four volumes and his notes in each volume. Shapiro has marked the number of each volume (in Roman numerals) on the front board and on the spine. Shapiro was an important if not easily classifiable poet. He rejected both the "new criticism" and the pragmatists and instead settled on Walt Whitman and William Carlos Williams as his models for great American poetry. His championship of Williams' poetry, and particularly of Paterson, was influential in establishing the high regard in which the work is now held. A magnificent association copy of one of the great American poem cycles. Connolly 100. .

Doctor Zhivago. Translated from the Russian by Max Hayward and Manya Harari.

London, Collins and Harvill Press, 1958. Orig. full red cloth w. gilt lettering to back in an excellent, not price-clipped orig. red, blue and yellow dust-jacket w. only very minor nicks and creases to extremities. An excellent, nice and clean copy.. First English edition, first printing of this modern classic, which tells the tragic story of the medical doctor and poet, Yuri Zhivago, in the years during the Russian Revolution.Though begun several decades earlier, the work was completed in 1956, and was submitted for publication to the journal "Novij Mir" the same year, but due to the controversial contents of the work and the Soviet government's dislike of Pasternak, it was rejected. The following year the manuscript was smuggled out of the Soviet Union by the Italian publisher Feltrinelli, who published the book in Russian in Milan in 1957. Already the following year numerous European translations of the work had been made, and the English and Italian ones appeared as the first. These immediate translations and the publications of them partly caused Pasternak being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1958. Due to the immense popularity of the work, all the European translations were reprinted numerous times. In 1965 the work was made into the large-scale film-production by David Lean, which was nominated for ten Oscars and won five

        [Cyrillic:] Doctor Zhivago.

Milano; Feltrinelli, n. d. [late 1958 or early 1959]. First official, or first trade edition in Russian. 22x14,5 cm. (3, 1 blank), 566, (1, 1 blank) pp. Publisher's green boards with pictorial dustjacket. The jacket is price-clipped and a bit chipped at extremities. Spine ends and corners are slightly bumped, and there is a small pressure mark on front board. Contents are clean but a bit toned in margins, as should be expected. There is a small separation between the half title and the title leaf, and a minimal hole in the gutter between rear free endpaper and rear board. A gift inscription in Cyrillic on front free endpaper. This edition is often referred to as the first Russian, but it was in fact preceded by the limited edition by Mouton in The Hague, published in late 1958 (cf. Biondi, Working and typesetting manuscript trees and the first and early editions of Doctor Zhivago, in the magazine Firsts, June 2003). Pasternak finished the novel in late 1955, but was never able to publish it in the Soviet Union, since it had been turned down by the official stately publisher, Goslitizdat. Several typescripts of the novel reached Western Europe and a number of translations were initiated, based on the different versions. Feltrinelli's Italian edition of 1957 was the first to be published. Since Pasternak was a candidate for the 1958 Nobel Prize for literature, both Feltrinelli and Mouton wished to publish the novel in Russian before August, should the novel be considered by the Swedish Academy as a part of Pasternak's literary achievement, and Mouton carried this out shortly before Feltrinelli

Colombo Buenos Aires: Colombo, 1958. Quarto. 32pp. From an edition of 52 copies, this is one of thirty-two copies printed on Ingres. An elegantly-printed bilingual edition of Keats's Odes, in English and Spanish, each with a full-page lithograph by Raúl Veroni of the poem's subject. The first illustration is signed in pencil by the artist. The collection includes such poems as "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and "To a Nightingale," with English and Spanish version of the poems opposite each other on facing pages. Veroni collaborated with the prominent Argentinean publisher Francisco A. Colombo for many years, beginning in 1937 when he was still a student at the National Academy of Fine Arts. The experience prepared him well to open his own graphic studio in the 1970s. Bound in off-white printed wrappers, with original glassine. This is the fourth volume in a series of poetry chapbooks, La Cabellera, by Veroni. Two small spots of discoloration to rear wrapper, and a couple of faint spots to page edges. Very fine.
