        Mining Manuscript Correspondence & Letters 1958 - 1969

      - An extensive archive of manuscript letters, postcards, notes etc from A. K. Hamilton Jenkin; with lengthy and detailed typescript replies etc from Justin Brooke, relating to the Cornish Mining industry, in relation to the " Mines and Miners of Cornwall " series. The archive consists of approximately 20 postcards and 49 manuscript letters (mainly of two pages) in the hand of A.K.H.J, for instance, " I am now revising my St. Erth, St. Hilary, Breage "Part". I wonder if you have any M. J. [ Mining Journal ] extracts on Ennys Wheal Virgin. I have notes from a M.S. report of circa 1847 but little or nothing from the M. J." From Justin Brooke to A.K.H.J there is a large batch of typescript sheets of " minor amendments " ( to " Mines and Miners " ), Index of Mines, Map reference of Mines, etc. Also 81 typescript copies of letters from J. B. to A.K.H.J with copious amounts of information on Cornish mines and the mining industry, suggestions and information, for the " Mines and Miners " series. For instance, " the enlarged sett of Calstock Consols had an eastern boundary somewhere about the Kelly Railway line, since Spargo (1865 p.138) notes that a fine lode of gossan 23' wide had been cut by the company about 60 fms. west of the engine shaft, which rather suggests that the old Trelawny Consols sett, or the western part of it, was included in Calstock Consols. The last named continued to work until about 1866 . " All contained within an elegant custom made drop sided box. A.K.H.M published the highly respected series of 16 volumes of the " Mines and Miners of Cornwall," between the years 1961-70 this detailed correspondence covers this period. Justin Brooke who was proof reading the series, suggesting alterations and amendments, as well as contributing large quantities of original information, much of which only he had access to through his own large collection of books, manuscripts and maps relating to the Cornish mining industry. Justin Brook's popular work " Stannary Tales the Shady Side of Mining ", published in 1980, was dedicated " To A. K. Hamilton Jenkin who guided my steps " [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Of course, I don't suppose the bus strike affects you, but I'm so sorry about the Smithfield stoppage.

1958 1958 - Sheet size: 190 × 140 mm. Stamped on both recto and verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 13 May 1958. Pen and ink on wove paper. A lady sympathises with a Beefeater. May 1958 saw strikes by both 48,000 London omnibus workers and workers at Smithfield Market. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

I ARRESTED PEARL STARR AND OTHER STORIES OF ADVENTURE AS A POLICEMAN IN FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS FOR 40 YEARS

Press-Atgus, Printers, n.d. [ca. 1958]., 1958. 9" x 6" tan printed wrappers. [3]-32 pages, photograph of author, foreword. Mike Gordon was a policeman in Fort Smith from 1907 to 1947, when he retired. During his time of service, encountered several incidences, some dangerous, some light-hearted that he offers here to include stories about Pearl Starr. Rosie Lee Reed, better known as Pearl Starr, was an American bordello owner and businesswoman in Arkansas, the first child of Belle Starr, the reputed "Bandit Queen" of the American Old West, and Jim Reed, Belle's first husband. True stories dealing with thefts, shootings, gambling, whiskey, robberies, judges, call-girls, etc. Also has some material on Henry Starr. Hand-written corrections and annotations throughout the booklet with the following four lines typed and taped at the end of tall text “David, Lockhart, Lee Sutton and Henry Starr was robbing the bank at Harrison, Arkansas, when Henry Starr was killed. This information was given me by Frank Carlton.” Six Guns 848 says, "This book tells about Pearl, Belle's daughter, running a house "on the line" and has some material about Henry Star."         The Magic Barrel

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1958. First edition of the author's first collection of short stories that went on to win the National Book Award. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author, "All good wishes to Fred and Louise Sincerely Bern Corvallis 1959." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows light wear to the spine. The Magic Barrel, has been recognized as a classic from the time it was published in 1959. The stories are set in New York and in Italy (where Malamud's alter ego, the struggleing New York Jewish Painter Arthur Fidelman, roams amid the ruins of old Europe in search of his artistic patrimony); they tell of egg candlers and shoemakers, matchmakers, and rabbis, in a voice that blends vigorous urban realism, Yiddish idiom, and a dash of artistic magic. "In the short story, Malamud achieved an almost psalmlike compression. He has been called the Jewish Hawthorne, but he might just as well be thought a Jewish Chopin, a prose composer of preludes and noctures" (Mark Shechner, Partisan Review).

Roemsche historie oft gesten, . . . nu erstmael in onser Nederlantscher spraken ghedruckt.Antwerp, (colophon: printed by Jan Grapheus and sold by Jan Gymnicus), August 1541. Folio. With the title-page and each of the 3 part-titles in a frame built up from 4 woodcuts (part 2 with different blocks than the others), well over 200 woodcuts in the text (including repeats). Late 17th-century calf, richly gold-tooled spine.

Belg. Typ. 1958; BMC STC Dutch, p. 123; Funck, p. 401; Machiels L404; USTC 403306; not in Bibl. Belg. First Dutch edition of Livius's classic history of Rome, beautifully illustrated with hundreds of woodcuts, many measuring about 12×14 cm. Written about AD 10, it is the most extensive work to survive from classical antiquity, and the present translation for the first time acquainted a wider audience in the Low Countries with the "knightly, manly deeds" (as the title puts it) of classical heroes. The woodcuts provide a fascinating view of clothing, architecture, military and other equipment, boats and sometimes trades and other human activities. The view they provide is not of classical Rome, however, but of the early sixteenth-century, for the artists made very little attempt at historical accuracy. A few showing battles, sieges, councils, visitations, etc. are used many times to illustrate different events, but others more specifically reflect the subjects of the text. So we see a hundred-and-twenty-foot dragon, the death of Archimedes, the use of elephants in battle, the burning of books (very topical in 1541!) and many other lively scenes.Owner's entry on title-page, partly erased. Leaves *2-5 misbound, title-page and leaf 207 detached, water stains, affecting the text in the first and last few quires. Front hinge and head and foot of spine damaged. Overall in good condition. An influential and beautifully illustrated edition of a great classic.
