Linear Programming and Economic Analysis

New York: McGraw-Hill Company, Inc., 1958. First edition of this classic text. Octavo, original gray cloth. Signed by both Paul A. Samuelson and Robert M. Solow on the title page. In near fine condition. Linear programming has been one of the most important postwar developments in economic theory, but until publication of the Linear Programming and Economic Analysis, no text offered a comprehensive treatment of the many facets of the relationship of linear programming to traditional economic theory. This book was the first to provide a wide-ranging survey of such important aspects of the topic as the interrelations between the celebrated von Neumann theory of games and linear programming, and the relationship between game theory and the traditional economic theories of duopoly and bilateral monopoly.

        Les Americains (First Edition)

Paris: Robert Delpire, 1958. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. This is the true first edition, first printing of Robert Frank\'s masterpiece \"Les Americans\" published by Robert Delpire, Paris in 1958. Robert Frank spent most of the late 1950s making \"a number of short trips out from New York and one long (nine-month) journey to the West Coast in a 1950 Ford to photograph America. From the more than 20,000 images that resulted, Frank eventually chose 83 of them and arranged them into four chapters. \'With these photographs,\' he later wrote, \'I have attempted to show a cross-section of the American population. My effort was to express it simply and without confusion. The view is personal.\' Such a simple intention for a book that would so alter the course of modern photography\" (Andrew Roth, The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century). Frank\'s Américains eventually achieved legendary status as \"the most renowned photobook of all. It struck a chord with a whole generation of American photographers. Many memorable photobooks have been derived from this mass of material. None has been more memorable, more influential, nor more fully realized than Frank\'s masterpiece\" (Parr & Badger, \"The Photobook: A History\"). Featuring 83 full-page photogravures with text by numerous authors edited by Alain Bosquet, the book is an oblong octavo with glazed paper over boards with drawings by Saul Steinberg. The condition of the book is Near Fine+ with minor surface wear to the cover including a scratch to the glaze on the rear cover, some foxing to the endpapers and a paper split to the free front pages (The cloth which maintains the integrity of the book is sound and undamaged). A highly collectible copy of arguably the greatest photobook ever published. Cited in both \"The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century\" by Andrew Roth and \"The Photobook: A History\", by Parr and Badger.

Someday, Somewhere (First Edition with Dust Jacket and All Ephemera)

Tokyo: Geibi Shuppan, 1958. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good. This is a first edition, first printing of Yasuhiro Ishimoto\'s critically acclaimed photobook \"Someday, Somewhere (Aruhi Arutokoro)\" published by Geibi Shuppan, Tokyo in 1958. The book features 7 color photographs and 178 black-and-white gravures including various gatefolds and fold-outs. In volume one of \"The Photobook: A History\", Parr and Badger write: \"Yasuhiro Ishimoto represented an influential link between Japanese and American Photography . In 1958 he had the distinction of producing the first major postwar Japanese photobook, the elegant Aruhi Arutokoro (Someday, Somewhere), shot in both Tokyo and Chicago . Aruhi Arutokoro is a photobook of truly international stature, providing Japanese photographers with a model of expression that transcended both the parochial and the purely documentary tendency dominating Japanese photography of the time\". Measuring approximately 11.25 x 9 inches, the book is bound in black cloth covered boards with a yellow spine and a photographically illustrated dust jacket. Laid into the book are 3 pieces of ephemera - a small booklet containing messages by book designer Ryuichi Yamashiro, Taro Okamoto, Ken Domon, and others, the publisher\'s postcard, and slit. The condition of the dust jacket is Very Good+ with some minor chipping and closed tears to the edges and a small amount of loss to the head and heel of the spine area. The inside of the dust jacket has been reinforced with tape at the head and heel of the spine. There is also some surface wear to the front and back covers. The book is in Near Fine- condition with some foxing to the top outside of the book and top outside edges that does not extend to inside of book with the exception of a tiny foxing spot on the top edge of the folding page. The pages opposite the first image page and the index page show some printing ink reflection which is very common for this title. The ephemera is in FINE- condition. Notwithstanding the list of faults listed above, this is a superior copy of this title that has all of the elements as issued. Cited in \"The Photobook: A History by Parr & Badger and Ryuichi Kaneko\'s reference work on Japanese Photobooks, \"Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 1970s\".

Absence of Diffusion in Certain Random Lattices

Contains 'Absence of Diffusion in Certain Random Lattices' IN The Physical Review, Vol 109, Second Series, Number 5, March 1, 1958, pages 1492-1505. The Nobel Prize in Physics 1977 was awarded jointly to Philip Warren Anderson, Sir Nevill Francis Mott and John Hasbrouck van Vleck "for their fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems". 'This paper presents a simple model for such process as spin diffusion or conduction in the impurity band. These processes involve transport in a lattice which is in some sense random, and in them diffusion is expected to take place via quantum jumps between localized sites. In this simple model the essential randomness is introducted by requiring the energy to vary randomly from site to site. It is shown that at low enough densities no diffusion at all can take place, and the criteria for transport to occur are given.' (abstract) 'One of the more subtle electronic features of real materials is the distinction between continuum electronic states and conducting electronic states. The fact that continuum electronic states in band tails might be localized was recognized by P. W. Anderson [Phys. Rev. 109, 1492 (1958)] in a paper that appeared just about the time superconductivity was being explained.' (The Physical Review, The First Hundred Years, a Selection of Seminal Papers and Commentaries, p. 621) Also contains articles by Sudarshan and Marshak about Fermi interaction as well as Lee, Yang and others.

        Stimulated Optical Radiation in Ruby

London: Macmillan. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST EDITION of the announcement of the first successful laser. The blueprint for the laser proposed by Townes and Schawlow in December 1958 "led several groups to try building a laser... Success came first to Theodore H. Maiman... He fired bright pulses from a photographer's flash lamp to excite chromium atoms in a crystal of synthetic ruby, a material he chose because he had studied carefully how it absorbed and emitted light and calculated that it should work as a laser. On May 16, 1960, he produced red pulses from a ruby rod about the size of a fingertip. "While lasers quickly caught the public imagination, perhaps for their similarity to the 'heat rays' of science fiction, practical applications took years to develop. A young physicist named Irnee D'Haenens, while working with Maiman on the ruby laser, joked that the device was 'a solution looking for a problem,' and the line lingered in the laser community for many years" (Britannica). Today, of course, lasers are ubiquitous, with a myriad of applications from medicine and science, to engineering and entertainment. They have become one of the essential components of the modern technological age. IN: Nature, Vol 187, no. 4736, pp. 493-4. One full issue, August 6, 1960. London: Macmillan, 1960. Quarto, modern half-morocco, bound without original wrappers. Stamp on general title, otherwise fine.

Poems and Drawings (Inscribed with ALS laid in)

New Haven: Readymade Press, 1958. The author’s unpaged poems in original German with his English translation produced one year after he retired from teaching at Yale. It is inscribed as follows: "Inscribed for Donna Hoodin/ by the author, Josef Albers." Laid in is a handwritten letter on his letterhead with his New Haven address to Mrs. Hoodin dated 3/7/1959 "Dear Mrs. Hoodin, I am very sorry to be this late--later than I meant to But I hope just as much that I am not too late. I gave you one of the very last copies--produced for university members--but (again but) I misplaced your note saying the name for whom I was to sign the books--please let me know once more and I will send the book quickly." With thanks for your interest and best regards, yours J Albers." Robert Rauschenberg later identified Albers as his most important teacher. Buckminster Fuller in a three page memorial wrote that he was not only great for his "aesthetic integrity" but his mastery of color harmonies (a lecture on which Fuller says he was fortunate enough to hear in 1948). Fuller notes his remarkable history from his role as teacher during the German Bauhaus period (1923-1933) to his creative period at Black Mountain to his long career at Yale. Linear Programming and Economic Analysis.

McGraw-Hill Company, Inc., New York 1958 - First edition of this classic text. For Shirley -- because of bright nights during a cold winter - in Le Downbeat [/] and for her birthday and our love John." In a 1977 letter to his bibliographer about the gestation of the novel, Holmes noted: "Shirley's moist eyes when she finished the last chapter in manuscript made it worth it." The whereabouts of the other dedication copy (to Kerouac) is unknown to this cataloguer.
