        The Dharma Bums

New York: The Viking Press, 1958. New York: The Viking Press, 1958 First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in metallic green and silver; in the original dust jacket designed by Bill English, with an illustration of two mountain climbers to the front panel, portrait photograph of Kerouac by Keith Jennison to the rear panel. A fine copy, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, some light toning to the front endpapers, otherwise bright and fresh pages; unclipped dust jacket, with a hint of wear to the extremities, minor rubbing to the hinges, bright and clean panels with much less rubbing than usual. An excellent copy and very scarce in this condition. Kerouac wrote The Dharma Bums after On the Road during the height of his interest in Buddhism; while On the Road is a quest for adventure, The Dharma Bums represents Kerouac's quest for truth. Like many of Kerouac's other works, the characters of The Dharma Bums are based on the author's actual friends and family; this novel features Ray Smith, the fictional narrator based on Kerouac, and Japhy Ryder, inspired by poet Gary Snyder whom Kerouac cites as a major influence in his understanding of Buddhism. The Dharma Bums addresses the relationship between Kerouac's ideals and lived experiences by contrasting urban party scenes with the narrator's introspective reflections while meditating in the forest.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Alfred A. Knopf,, New York: 1958 - First edition. The seventh book in the Lew Archer series. Many sources believe this book marked a series turning point, when Macdonald abandoned his imitations of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett and found his own voice. It also marks Archer's turning point as a man more interested in understanding the criminal than in catching him. Slightly cocked but very good with printed, patterned boards still bright and unfaded, but with a few faint foxed spots and a bit of glue bleed through at hinge paper; in a very good dust jacket with minor soiling, a few shallow chips to spine ends and corners, and some old tape backing of a few short tears. Book is Fine, sharp and unread with flawless gilt, but the green top stain is a bit faded towards the spine. The dust jacket is Near Fine, suffering from moderate rubbing near the spine fold and flap folds, but less than is often seen. "In this, in the present American scene in prose, he is the great master innovator." Set predominantly in California and Washington. Kerouac also includes a description of the Six Gallery poetry reading of 1955, thought to be the first public demonstration of the Beat Movement, where Allan Ginsberg read from "Howl." "In his often brilliant descriptions of nature one is aware of exhilarating power and originality." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Log from the Sea of Cortez; the Narrative Portion of the Book Sea of Cortez with a Profile About Ed Ricketts

London - Heinemann, 1958. London - Heinemann, 1958 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A highly sought after first English edition of John Steinbeck's The Log from the Sea of Cortez. Featuring the original illustrated dustwrapper, photographic plates, and maps to the endpapers. The Log from the Sea of Cortez details a six-week (March 11 April 20) marine specimen-collecting boat expedition he made in 1940 at various sites in the Gulf of California (also known as the Sea of Cortez), with his friend, the marine biologist Ed Ricketts. It is regarded as one of Steinbeck's most important works of non-fiction chiefly because of the involvement of Ricketts, who shaped Steinbeck's thinking and provided the prototype for many of the pivotal characters in his fiction, and the insights it gives into the philosophies of the two men. Condition: In original cloth binding with original unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, cloth has some rubbing and sunning to the spine, with the odd mark to the board. Dustwrapper is sound, although with some sunning to the spine and extremities, as well as some spotting.         Breakfast at Tiffany's

New York: Random House, 1958. New York: Random House, 1958 First edition, first printing. Publisher's yellow cloth, black label lettered in gilt to spine; in original dust jacket designed by Ismar David. A very good or better copy, with a hint of wear to the spine head, minor rubbing to the spine label, some spotting to the boards, very faint offsetting to the half-title page, otherwise extremely bright interior; unclipped dust jacket, with the usual fading to the spine, a hint of light wear to the extremities, small closed tear to the top edge of the front panel, some spotting to the top edge of the rear panel. A nice, clean copy. Breakfast at Tiffany's is the author's third novel and includes the short stories, "House of Flowers," "A Diamond Guitar," and "A Christmas Memory," in addition to the title novella. This beloved text features the iconic protagonist Holly Golightly, a passionate and free-spirited young woman living in New York City. The plot tells of an unnamed narrator, a writer, as he gets to know Holly and learns about her quest to find happiness and a place to call home. Breakfast at Tiffany's was first published in Esquire magazine in 1958 after being rejected by Harper's Bazaar for being too racy. Random House published the novella along with three of Capote's popular short stories, and it was made into a film starring Audrey Hepburn three years later. Interestingly, Holly Golightly was originally named Connie Gustafson, and Capote only changed her name as a last-minute decision shortly before publication.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover.         The Affluent Society

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1958.. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1958. First edition of the economist's landmark work. Octavo, original cloth with titles to the spine in silver. Boldly signed by John Kenneth Galbraith on the front free endpaper. Also laid in a signed letter dating from 1966 on Galbraith's Harvard University letterhead. Fine in a bright near fine dust jacket with light wear. A very sharp copy this book. John Kenneth Galbraith's breakthrough as a best-selling author came with "The Affluent Society" for which he was honored with the American Economic Association's prestigious presidency. The book also influenced both the Great Society program and the rise of the American "counterculture" in the 1960's. Listed on Modern Library's 100 great nonfiction books of the twentieth century. Galbraith's ideas often addressed the influence of the potential market power of large corporations (Dunn and Pressman, 2005). He believed that corporations could become price makers, rather than price takers, by weakening the accepted principle of consumer sovereignty (Galbraith, 1970). This, in turn, allowed corporations to efficiently increase the production of their goods.

Based on his research at the Library of Congress and the New York Public Library, among others, "Finale in China" presents a monumental historical account of the fate of Russian emigres in the Far Eastern centers of the diaspora, from the early twentieth century to its demise in following WWII. Balakshin traces the development of Russian communities in centers such as Harbin and Shanghai, and charts political, economic, and military tendencies as well as the history of the White Russian movement in the Eastern provinces. A rich resource for anyone interested in the results of the Russian Civil War and the fate of the Far-Eastern Russian diaspora.

        The Dharma Bums

New York: Viking Press, 1958.. New York: Viking Press, 1958. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Very good in a near fine dust jacket with light wear. There were three books that really shaped Kerouac's public image, the three that came out within a year of each other in 1957 and 1958: On the Road, The Subterraneans and The Dharma Bums" (Charters, 295). One of the best and most popular of Kerouac's autobiographical novels, The Dharma Bums is based on experiences the writer had during the mid-1950s while living in California, after he'd become interested in Buddhism's spiritual mode of understanding. One of the book's main characters, Japhy Ryder, is thinly disguised on the poet Gary Snyder, who was a close friend and whose interest in Buddhism influenced Kerouac.
