Really, Cathcart, your record of breakages exceeds the Comet's.

1958 1958 - Sheet size: 190 × 140 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 18 Sep 1958. Pen and ink and blue pencil crayon on wove paper. The latest version of the notoriously accident-prone de Haviland Comet, the world's first jet airliner, was delivered to BOAC in September 1958. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

        PUZZLE FOR THE SECRET SEVEN

Brockhampton Press , 1958. Brockhampton Press , 1958. First edition. 8vo. Two-tone blue pictorial boards in the pictorial dustwrapper. The half title contains a printed "This book belongs to" box which is inscribed by Enid Blyton, "Happy Birthday! Sian Baverstock much love from Granny". There is also a later signature of "Mrs Baverstock". A very good copy of the book in a good dustwrapper, some general wear and tape strengthening to the rear. A delightful association, inscribed by Blyton to her Granddaughter. Black and white illustrations throughout, some with a single colour overlay, by Burgess Sharrocks. Born in 1931, Gillian Baverstock (née Pollock) was Enid Blyton's first child. In an article for "Teacher's World" Blyton wrote, "...I am so pleased that a baby has come to live with me, because you all know how much I love boys and girls - and it is lovely to have one that really belongs to me and not to some other mother and father...". Four years later Imogen was born and Enid's family was complete. As the girls grew up Enid Blyton wrote stories that appealed to children of her daughters' age. She would test out plots and ideas on the girls and ask them to proof read the books. Her own children's favourite stories would usually prove to be those most popular with other young readers. Many of Enid Blyton's stories were based on her own or her daughter's experiences, with school stories featuring snapshots of daily life gleaned from Gillian and Imogen , "games of hockey, lacrosse and tennis, the little spites and deceits of school life, the loyalty and generosities of friendship". The birth of Sian, Gillian's daughter and Enid Blyton's first grandchild, coincided with the publication of this book and hence the touching dedication. After Enid Blyton's death in 1968, Gillian took a great interest in her mother's estate and writings. She became curator of many of her mother's belongings, including typescripts and books. When Gillian died in 2007 her collection was auctioned in Ilkley, Yorkshire. This book comes from Gillian's estate.

Housed in a scarlet linen slipcase.Kay Thompson (1909-1998) is best known today as the creator of the Eloise children's books but she began her career as a composer, musician, actress, singer, and vocal coach to such stars as Judy Garland, Lena Horne, Frank Sinatra, and June Allyson. Thompson lived at the Plaza Hotel in New York City - home to Eloise. The books were partly inspired by the antics of her goddaughter, Liza Minnelli, daughter of Judy Garland and film director Vincente Minnelli. But later, when asked if this was true Thompson replied, "I am Eloise." The four books in the series, illustrated by Hilary Knight, are Eloise (Simon & Schuster, 1955), Eloise in Paris (Simon & Schuster, 1957), Eloise at Christmastime (Random House, 1958) and Eloise in Moscow (Simon & Schuster, 1959). Each follows the adventures of the precocious six-year-old Eloise. All were bestsellers upon release and have been adapted into television projects. She also composed and performed a Top 40 hit song, "Eloise" (Cadence Records, 1956). Film buffs will recall Thompson as Maggie Prescott, the flamboyant, Diana Vreeland-like editor of the fashion magazine, Quality, in Funny Face (1957) starring Fred Astaire as a photographer ala Richard Avedon, which opens with Thompson's now famous showpiece number, "Think Pink!

A Night to Remember [Atlantique Latitude 41 Degrees] (Original French Film Poster)

London: The Rank Organization, 1958. London: The Rank Organization, 1958. French theatrical release poster for the seminal 1958 British docudrama, "A Night to Remember," here under it's French title, "Atlantique Latitude 41 Degrees."& & Probably the most distinctive poster produced for the film. Novelist Ambler and director Baker set out to make a film that depicted the sinking of the Titanic as accurately as possible, with no added fictional subplots. In addition to being massively entertaining, the film is today held in high regard by "Titanic" historians, compared to the more melodramatic (and big-budget) take by James Cameron in 1997.& & Director Baker noted in a 1991 interview, "The whole purpose of making the film was to show a society [that] had persuaded itself that you could make a ship which could never to be sunk."& & 34 x 52 inches, on linen, Fine condition.& & Criterion 7. McFarlane p. 51.

Eigenh. Korrekturen der Druckfahnen zu: Ferdinand Ebner. Gesammelte Werke. Im Auftrage der Ferdinand-Ebner-Gesellschaft herausgegeben von Michael Pfliegler und Ludwig Haensel. Bd. II: Die Wirklichkeit Christi. Brenneraufsätze. Für den Druck vorbereitet von Franz Seyr.

Wien, Thomas Morus Presse im Verlag Herder Wien, 1958.. 353, (3) SS. Gefalzte, beschnittene und einzeln klammergeheftete Einzellagen in Pappumschlag. 8vo.
