Rodman's relationship with Shahn extended at least as far back as the thirties, and his biography of Shahn, published in 1951, was the first full-scale study of the artist and his work. In the present volume, Shahn is represented by two interviews, the second of which comes at the very end of the book forming a sort of postscript.

Single issue of the student art-literary magazine of Adelbert College (now part of Case Western Reserve University), edited by George Skillman. Small quarto (ca. 26cm x 20cm); 80pp, with 4 inserted leaves of plates included in pagination. Small tear to paper at upper spine; mild external soil, else Near Fine. From the library of Ben and Bernarda Bryson Shahn, with estate label inside front cover. & & Page 23 is an original, unsigned and untitled woodcut by Roy Lichtenstein, pressed from wood block in black ink on hand-made mulberry paper (CORLETT III.1). According to Corlett (The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: a Catalogue Raisonné, 1997) this is one of two abstract wood engravings executed by Lichtenstein for Polemic in 1957 and 1959. Of the two, the current work is by far the scarcer; edition size is unknown, but an editor's statement in the first issue of 1958 puts the magazine's circulation at 2,000. We suspect it was considerably less for this earlier issue. Other contributors to this issue include B.F. Ford, Bruce Sharpe, Julia Kertiss Tucker, Barbara Wood, others.

        Bitter Lemons [Signed by Durrell and by George Seferis]

      New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc., 1957. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good +/very good. A Very Good + copy of the first American edition, first printing (slightly askew and with some leaning, spine ends pushed, lower front corner of front board turns gently inward, rather minor wear), in a Very Good dust jacket (general soiling, some wear at the spine ends and panel corners), SIGNED BY LAWRENCE DURRELL on the title page and INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY NOBEL PRIZE-WINNER GEORGE SEFERIS TO REX WARNER on the half-title (with Rex Warner's name written in English and Seferis' signature and his inscription in Greek). Simultaneously published in hardcover and in paperback, hardcover copies of the book are, of course, the scarcer of the two. Jacketed hardcover copies of both the first UK printing and of the first American edition are surprisingly scarce, and copies signed by Durrell are, in our experience, rarely seen. In "Bitter Lemons", Durrell tells of the three years (1953-1956) he spent in Cyprus (where he moved with Sappho Jane, his daughter by Eve Cohen, Durrell's second wife and the model for the character Justine in the Alexandria Quartet), first living there as a visitor, then as a homeowner and teacher, and finally as Press Advisor to the British Government during the Enosis (a chaotic period during which many Cypriots sought the incorporation of Cyprus into Greece and which, in 1955 gave birth to the violent pro-Enosis movement known as the EOKA whose military wing, led by George Grivas, sabotaged military installations, ambushed military convoys and patrols, and assassinated British soldiers and local informers.) George Seferis first visited Cyprus in 1963 and immediately fell in love with the island. As an important Greek Diplomat who ultimately became Ambassador to the UK, Seferis spent much time and effort seeking a resolution of the Cyprus question, investing a great deal of effort and allowing his personal views to intrude on his diplomatic efforts. Also one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. British author Rex Warner, to whom Seferis has inscribed the book, was Seferis' close friend and frequent translator. In addition to their deep relationship as friends, each man held the other in high regard, and Warner's excellent translations of his work were a major factor in Seferis' winning the Prize. Durrell, Seferis, and Warner all were fascinated by Cyprus and this rare copy of "Bitter Lemons" joins together the three great authors in a way that no other book can. An important copy of Durrell's autobiographical work in Very Good condition, exceedingly scarce when SIGNED BY LAWRENCE DURRELL and quite RARE when SIGNED BY LAWRENCE DURRELL AND BY NOBEL PRIZE WINNER GEORGE SEFERIS. RARE INDEED.

        AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT POEM SIGNED: "A Nearly Next to Naught Song

      [@1957]. Manuscript. Fine. Fair copy AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT of a complete poem of 29 lines titled "A Nearly Next to Naught Song," completely in Frost's hand and SIGNED by him at the conclusion with the dedication "For Richard Hocking/once the author's pupil for/a lesson or two at Shady Hill/or rather on the porch on/Irving Street" on a 6-1/8" x 7-3/4" piece of paper. In the upper right corner in pencil Hocking has written "1957." The text is the poem published as "A Never Naught Song" in the 1962 volume IN THE CLEARING. In this version Frost has eliminated two lines--"Out of coming-in/Into having been!"--and made various other changes in words and punctuation. The Houghton Library at Harvard has a Frost notebook, undated, containing this poem titled as "A Next to Nearly Naught Song." It is one of two poems by Frost along with "All Revelations" (1938) concerned with descriptions of the quantum nature of atoms.

Cloth, d.w., not price clipped, some rubbing and browning, minor loss to the spine ends. The postcard, of a Hebrew illuminated manuscript in the Bodleian Library, is dated January 1988 and was written from the author's home in Somerset. Sending new year's greetings, he touches on his parents' time spent living in Brighton, commenting "It must be a splendid place to be retired in". The fourth volume in Powell's "Dance to the Music of Time" series.

        I Blow My Own Horn (First Edition, inscribed by Jesse L. Lasky)

      Garden City: Doubleday, 1957. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Jesse Lasky on the half-title page: "Hon. James Douglas: / I am happy to autograph this book, because it contains a brief account of one of the finest gentlemen in the Motion Picture Industry--my good friend Merian C. Cooper. / Sincerely / Jesse L. Lasky / H'wood Aug 12/57." Around 1914, Lasky and Adolph Zukor began distributing their films through a new interstate concerned called Paramount Pictures, and the move was so successful that the two men went on to form the Famous Players-Lasky Corporation in 1916, which became the parent entity of Paramount. Lasky went on to produce hundreds of films (including Wings, The Last Command, and Sergeant York) for the new concern, which continues today to be one of the giants of the film industry. Very Good plus in a Very Good plus dust jacket. Jacket is bright and clean, with only some rubbing at the corners to note. Lasky's memoir of his years in show business, the only copy signed by him that we have ever encountered.

        Five original drawings

      (1957-1959). Pen and ink on paper of varying sizes and finishes. All are signed by the artist, William Steig. These drawings were produced for an advertising campaign for the Butcher Polish Company of Marlborough, Massachusetts, which saw itself leading its market during this period. Steig’s drawings feature various faces wearing a panorama of expressions, from despair to hope. One shows a man wearing a polka-dotted bow tie and a halo, with his hand raised in benediction, and another depicts a kerchiefed woman smiling and looking into her open purse. Steig, best known for his illustrated children’s books and New Yorker cartoons, began working in advertising after the success of his book, The Lonely People, in 1942. The drawings bear labels on the reverse from N. W. Ayer and Son in Philadelphia, the first advertising agency in the United States. All but one of the drawings are mounted on board. One of the drawings is marked in the margins with measurements and notes in pencil from the layout process, and another is marked on the mat. All are fine.

        Paul Trebilcock Portraits

      No. 284, a remarkable example from the privately printed first book on the artist limited to 500 copies, with a later signed gift presentation by Paul Trebilcock to John F. Dierberger and with a laid-in (now in an archival sleeve) well-preserved, 2 pages signed typed letter from the artist to Dierberger on his portrait painting of Anne Hopkins owned by the recipient and reproduced in the book as plate 12, the letter on the artist's handmade correspondence stationary with printed address heading, documenting the gift, and with much interesting, previously unknown information about the painting of the portrait of Anne Hopkins, known after her 1957 marriage, as Anne Hopkins Aitken [1911-1994] with detail on 2 of the sittings and on the Hopkins family, the letter closing with a remembrance of Robert Harshe (then Director of the Art Institute of Chicago) and his assistance to Paul Trebilcock with a postscript on the Cornwall origins of the artist's family. Anne Hopkins Aitken, the prominent American Zen Buddhist, a practitioner of Sanbo Kyodan and co-founder of the Diamond Sangha, studied with Yasutani Haku'un and was married to the prominent American Zen Buddhist abbot and author, Robert Baker Aitken. LETTER: 2 sheets, standard size, handmade stationary, heading printed with Trebilcock's Manhattan co-op address and phone no. (He lived there from the 1930's to his death.), typed in black ink, typed recipient address and date, body of letter-54 lines in 8 paragraphs, signed with a ballpoint pen in blue ink, signature carefully done in a forceful hand with customary space before second syllable in family name, in reply on return from Europe to John F. Dierberger of Los Altos, California, November 5, 1970, (42 years after book published) re: his 1926 portrait painting of Anne Hopkins, "at about the age of 15", now owned by Dierberger and apparently purchased in the San Francisco Bay area, who sent a color reproduction to Trebilcock with a request for information. Trebilcock, expansive on the subject, includes interesting detail on 2 of the sittings, Anne Hopkins and the Hopkins family, and a remembrance of Robert Harshe, then Director of the Art Institute of Chicago, who visited during a sitting. Thanking Dierberger for the reproduction, ("Because I have seen only black-and-white reproductions in the intervening years, I have almost forgotten the color."), Trebilcock writes he is sending the book with its reproduction of the Anne Hopkins portrait (plate no. 12), as a gift. Letter closes with a witty postscript on the derivation and pronunciation of his name and his family's immigration from Cornwall, "Cornwall is a duchy at the southwestern corner of England, pointing like a finger toward America. (My grandfather apparently thought so.)". PRESENTATION: on justification page with recipient name, closing salutation and full signature in blue ink, numbered 284 in black ink with fountain pen. FORMAT: As issued, sienna wood grain paper boards, sewn with similar handmade sienna endpapers, with stamped in black title label on upper board, decorated and lettered in genuine gold leaf, triple ruled with elegant arrow accents and lettered in gilt with arrow accents on spine, in the original, plain light sepia glassine dust wrapper. SIZE: 24 x 17.4 cm or 9.45 x 6.85 inches, as issued. CONDITION DETAIL: Letter: Excellent: clean and bright, some light dot offset in letter bodies: 1 transmittal fold: 1 minute outer edge chip, 1 tip with rub, 2 corners with trace bend, a few slight fingering pressure marks. Book: Pages: clean: some with slight fingering pressure marks: some with very light fore-edge wear: last few sheets with inkless offset from presentation. Boards: bright: light bottom edge wear: 1 small puncture hole-lower board only near head of gutter-doesn't continue. Binding: Excellent: spine with light slant. Folded for mailing, with light use and short tear in top blank margin, archivally encapsulated and mounted in an extravagant gilt full morocco folder. James S. Copley bookplate on marbled folder pastedown. To "Ray" [i.e. Ray Bassender, the Steinbecks' builder and contractor in Sag Harbor] regretting having missed his visit to New York, and observing: "It has been a long time since we have brinked together and furthermore I have certain semantic matters that I have never been able to get over to you. I do like Ike. But the word like has two distinct meanings. One may 'like' as I 'like' that bay gelding in the fourth race, and then there is the liking one has for dogs and children and idiots of even disposition. In the second sense, I like Ike very much. Why, Hell! man, I even like Taft. I think he is doing a wonderful job -- perhaps a better job than Ike is doing, albeit in the same manner ...." He further discusses a "damned osprey which went out of control. From nowon [sic] I am having ospreys equipped with a self destructive mechanism like the self- directed missiles of the Air Force. Any osprey which may in the future get off limits will explode and fall harmlessly into the ocean, band and all ...." Signed "Yours, John." Steinbeck's "My War with the Osprey" had appeared in HOLIDAY in March the same year, and Bassender figures in the context of the events there recorded.

        Typed Letter Signed

      London: Faber letterhead, 7 Nov, 1957. To Miss C. von Koschembahr. Quarto. Single page with integral airmail envelope. Lightly creased from mailing but fine. A gentle and unusually revealing letter from Eliot to a patron of some budding poet from whom he had received a group of poetry submitted in the hope of publication. "I am increasingly fearful as I grow older of the responsibility of pronouncing on poetry of the very young, and increasingly doubtful of my discrimination, but I am afraid I must say that I am not really impressed with your unfortunate young friend's poems. It seems to me that he is working off some of his private bitterness and frustration..." Letters from Eliot in his capacity as editor in chief at Faber are typically terse and businesslike. Examples as charming as the present one are uncommon, and indeed his critical assessment is not without self-reflexive significance, when we remember that Eliot had once denounced his own magnum opus The Waste Land in similar terms, as "only the relief of a personal and wholly insignificant grouse against life".

Notwithstanding it is indeed signed & as such not to be toyed with as there are only a handful of really top-of-mind modern titles & right beside Catcher & Mockingbird sits OTR or is it the other way round? The book is like new with a small ticket from a California bookstore on the lower front pastedown, a habit of new bookstores that more or less died in the 1960s. The first issue dustwrapper is complete with a hardly noticeable closed half-inch tear to the top of the front and a slightly longer and jagged closed tear to the bottom rear which has mild soiling. Only mild sunning to the spine which has very light wear to the tips but no chipping. Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper. The longtime reigning champ of Beat Literature, with the many hints of it being turned into a film over the years finally realized with the movie to be released this December.         On The Road

This copy conforms to all bibliographical points required for The First Printing and First Issue Dustwrapper. On the Road was written in April 1951, and published by Viking Press in 1957. It is a largely autobiographical work that was based on the spontaneous road trips of Kerouac and his friends across mid-century America. It is often considered a defining work of the postwar Beat Generation that was inspired by jazz, poetry, and drug experiences. While many of the names and details of Kerouac's experiences are changed for the novel, hundreds of references in On the Road have real-world counterparts. When the book was originally released, The New York Times hailed it as "the most beautifully executed, the clearest and most important utterance" of Kerouac's generation. Small stain to bottom edge, not intruding onto internal pages,else a Very Fine, exquisitely preserved, bright and tight copy without the usual sunning to spine. Near Fine, crisp, bright un-restored and unclipped 1st issue dustwrapper presents a small 1/2" piece lacking from headpiece (with no effect to titles) as well a various minor rubbing creasing to extremities. A most beautiful copy of this icon of Modern American Literature.

        On the Road

      NY: Viking, 1957. Octavo. (iv) 310 pp. First edition. Author's second book, which stands quite firmly as the quintessential work of beat literature. The subject of Kerouac's rhapsodic novel is well-known, as are the stories surrounding its composition, and the mixed bag of critical response to its publication. What is less often cited is Kerouac's intended audience, which Ann Charters reveals in her bibliography: in a later interview, he admits that the book was written for his second wife "to tell her what I'd been through. It's directed toward a woman ... it's sexy because it's addressed to a woman." Fine and bright in black cloth stamped in white, and with unrestored d/w which shows a small triangular chip to spine head at rear crease with a consequent half-inch closed tear, and several small nicks and closed tears at extremities.

Notwithstanding it is indeed signed & as such not to be toyed with as there are only a handful of really top-of-mind modern titles & right beside Catcher & Mockingbird sits OTR or is it the other way round? A separate key to the engravings (printing versions in reduced size and detail appears opposite the table. Another highly appealing work by this former student at the Bauhaus under Albers and later associate with Friedlander at the Hermitage Studio. Flocon's specialization in burin engraving, coupled with his practical and technical explorations of perspective (including the first theoretical exposé of curvilinear perspective) and space, produced a body of work fascinating in its melding of precision and imagination. Rosalind Franklin, whose X-ray photographs of DNA were crucial to Watson and Crick's discovery of the molecule's double helix structure in 1953, began researching the molecular structure of selected plant viruses after moving from King's College to Birkbeck College in mid-1953. She was aided in this work by Aaron Klug, who would later win the 1982 Nobel Prize in chemistry for developing crystallographic electron microscopy and for elucidating the structure of biologically important nucleic acid-protein complexes. The two began investigating the structure of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), making several important discoveries regarding the arrangement of the virus's protein subunits and RNA strand; later in their researches Klug and Franklin agreed to divide the work, with Franklin taking on TMV and other rod-shaped plant viruses, and Klug concentrating on spherical plant viruses such as turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV). Klug continued his virus researches after Franklin's death, first at Birkbeck and later at Cambridge University's MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, which he joined in 1962. The present papers report "the early stages of an X-ray diffraction study of crystals of turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV). This has shown that the virus particle has cubic symmetry, with a strong pseudo-symmetry higher than that of the cubic unit cell of the crystal, and has given an indication of what the actual arrangement of the protein sub-units might be" ("The structure of turnip yellow mosaic virus: X-ray diffraction studies," p. 242). Klug, Franklin and Finch briefly announced their findings in Nature (no. [1] above), following up with a longer paper published in Biochimica et biophysica acta (no. [2] above).

The very rare first edition, printed in Russian in Italy, of this modern classic, which tells the tragic story of the medical doctor and poet, Yuri Zhivago, in the years during the Russian Revolution.Though begun several decades earlier, the work was completed in 1956, and was submitted for publication to the journal "Novij Mir" the same year, but due to the controversial contents of the work and the Soviet government's dislike of Pasternak, it was rejected. The following year the manuscript was smuggled out of the Soviet Union by the Italian publisher Feltrinelli, who published the book in Russian in Milan in 1957. Already the following year numerous European translations of the work had been made, and the English and Italian ones appeared as the first. These immediate translations and the publications of them partly caused Pasternak being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1958. Due to the immense popularity of the work, all the European translations were reprinted numerous times.In 1965 the work was made into the large-scale film-production by David Lean, which was nominated for ten Oscars and won five

That William Faulkner would be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1950 had been predicted by the Swedish author, journalist and connoisseur of American literature Thorsten Jonsson (1910-1950), who admired Faulkner's works and who acted as his main introducer in Sweden. Jonsson was Dagens Nyheter's USA correspondent from 1943-46 and made his statement while interviewing Faulkner at Rowan Oak in 1946. Unfortunately, Jonsson didn't live to see his prediction come true. At the dinner party given the night before the Nobel Banquet by Faulkner's Swedish publisher, a toast was proposed for Jonsson, as "the man most responsible for our gathering tonight". Among the dinner guests was Else Jonsson, his widow, who had been invited both as a guest of honour and as a fluent speaker of English with a broad knowledge of American customs. She and Faulkner immediately found each other, and they met several times during his stay in Stockholm. Their encounter developed into a life-long passion and friendship, clearly seen in the many letters Faulkner wrote to her, and they managed to spend some time together in Paris, Holmenkollen (Norway) and Stockholm during the years to come. In his first love letter to her, dated the fifteenth of December 1950, he asks himself how he will be able to return to the USA without seeing her again. He also says that being a Noble Prize bloke is nothing compared to spending an afternoon with her. Faulkner's last letter is dated the 14th of December 1960
