[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Three Page Typed Letter Signed to John R. Pierce, "the father of the communications satellite"

Three pages on Campbell's Mountainside, New Jersey stationery, dated 8 January 1957. Signed "John." Lightly folded as mailed, else fine. A fascinating and truly remarkable letter, of approximately 1400 words, with a significant and detailed discussion of rocketry, the possibilities of space travel, and United States scientific research. He discusses the Vanguard rocket, Sputnik, hydrogen bombs, Savannah River, math, Russian superiority in practical rocket constructions, and more. Near the conclusion, Campbell rails against the U.S. scientific establishment: "'Basic Science' John, has oversold itself. We don't need more scientists; we need fewer. Scientists don't need more respect; we'd be better off if scientists had less respect. What we do need is greater respect for the ingenious inventor --- the unpredictable, undependable, unscientific, but remarkably effective innovator." The recipient, John R. Pierce, was a physicist and prolific inventor who was Director of Research at Bell Laboratories. He was frequently referred to as "the father of the communications satellite," leading the team that developed the Telstar satellite, the first active communications satellite to relay phone and television traffic, and which delivered the first live television signals between the U.S. and Europe. He was also an accomplished musician, a pioneer in digital music, and recorded some of the first synthesized music. However, Pierce is probably best known as the man who coined the word "transistor." Under the name J.J. Coupling, he wrote both real science and science-fiction stories for Astounding Science Fiction, a magazine edited by Campbell. Campbell was a physicist, but is better known as one of the most influential editors and practitioners of science-fiction. Isaac Asimov called him "the most powerful force in science fiction ever." As a writer he is most famous for his classic science-fiction story "Who Goes There?" about a shape-shifting alien that invades an Antarctic station, and which was filmed three times as The Thing. A great letter. .

Original pen and ink drawing of Piglet

Petworth: , 1957. Octavo (177 × 123 mm) headed notepaper of Shepard's house Woodmancote in Lodsworth, near Petworth. Mounted on card, slight mount-burn to the margins, lightly browned, perhaps a little faded, but very good. Autograph letter and original drawing of Piglet, seated on the grass with a dandelion clock; "The Piglet was sitting on the ground at the door of his house blowing happily at a dandelion, and wondering whether it would be this year, next year, some time or never. He had just discovered that it would be never, and was trying to remember what "it" was …" (Winnie-the-Pooh). " To Mr. Gwynne Hughes, 'Since Piglet seems to be your favourite character, I send you his portrait'". Character sketches by Shepard are quite scarce as he famously regretted illustrating Milne's books as he felt that they overshadowed his subsequent career.

The Original Four-Act Version of The Importance of Being Earnest with an Explanatory Foreword by Vyvyan Holland

Methuen and Co. Ltd. 1957 - First Edition, First Printing, Proof Copy. Book is near fine in the original printed wrappers. On the front someone has written price and month (of publication?) and on the spine author and title, the lower wrapper is unevenly darkened, but not creased in any way. Though this is a later addition to Wilde's literary output by his son, this edition is rather scarce, particularly as a proof. The "Explanatory Foreword by Vyvyan Holland" is illustrated by pages from the original manuscript and describes how Wilde had to cut his play, in particular the highly comic part of Mr Gribsby, in order to make room for a curtain raiser. CHF 750. This item is part of our Catalogue 8: Poems Plays Pictures Portraits Pamphlets Photographs Paraphernalia, a copy of which you can order from us at YGRbookS.         Doktor Zhivago. (Schiwago)

Milano, Feltrinelli, (1957).. 2 Blatt, 566 Seiten, 1 Blatt. - Green paper boards, with the original dust jacket (chipped at spine-ends and corners). Some foxing on the first pages and a minor piece torn out on the paste down.. Rare first public edition of Doctor Zhivago. This book caused the worst crizis of the Soviet literature politics. In 1958 Pasternak was nominated for the noble prize for this novel. But there was no Russian edition, while the discussion was ongoing. The American Secret Service distributed copies to the Nobel Prize Committee with Feltrinellis name on it, but without a copyright note. Feltrinelli was now in difficult situation, he published it and the costs were paid by the CIA. The American Secret Service tried to influence while the Cold War the Russian cultural politics and they were interested in Pasternak as a Noble Prize Winner. The Soviet press began to criticize Pasternak and it was forbidden for him to accept the Nobel Prize. Furtheron he was isolated and expelled from the Soviet Writer's Association. The first edited and correct Russian version was published in the Ann Arbor Michigan Press in 1959, and in 1988 was the first Russian edition published in Russia itself. - Compare THE MOSCOW NEWS, # 18,2007 and Cornwell "Reference Guide to Russian Literature, p 617,624.

        Some Came Running

Charles Scribner's Sons, New Brunswick 1957 - xii+1266 pages. Thick octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in half red cloth with black lettering to spine and cover. Inscribed to Davis Grubb. First edition. James Jones's second published novel, Some Came Running (1957), had its roots in the abandoned first effort. In contrast to Eternity, it was savaged by the critics. They were especially harsh with the frequently misspelled words and punctuation errors; they didn't recognize that such elements were a conscious style choice by Jones to evoke the provinciality of the novel's characters and setting. Jones apparently played around with this style in several short stories written at about the same time as Some Came Running (later collected in The Ice-Cream Headache and Other Stories), only to abandon it altogether by the time he finished The Thin Red Line in 1962, in favor of the blunt but more grammatically sound style most associated with Jones today. Some Came Running was immediately adapted as film starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine, which was critically acclaimed and nominated for several Oscars. Davis Grubb (July 23, 1919 - July 24, 1980) was an American novelist and short story writer. Born in Moundsville, West Virginia, Grubb wanted to combine his creative skills as a painter with writing and as such attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, his color blindness was a handicap he could not overcome and he gave up on painting to dedicate himself to writing fiction. He did, however, make a number of drawings and sketches during the course of his career, some of which were incorporated into his writings. In 1940, Grubb moved to New York City where he worked at NBC radio as a writer while using his free time to write short stories. In the mid 1940s he was successful in selling several short stories to major magazines and in the early 1950s he started writing a full length novel. Influenced by accounts of economic hardship by depression-era Americans that his mother had seen first hand as a social worker, Grubb produced a dark tale that mixed the plight of poor children and adults with that of the evil inflicted by others. The Night of the Hunter became an instant bestseller and was voted a finalist for the 1955 National Book Award. That same year, the book was made into a motion picture that is now regarded as a classic. Deemed "culturally significant" by the Library of Congress, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. Grubb went on to write a further nine novels and several collections of short stories. His 1969 novel Fools' Parade would also be made into a motion picture starring James Stewart. Some of Grubb's short stories were adapted for television by Alfred Hitchcock and by Rod Serling for his Night Gallery series. Grubb died in New York City in 1980. His novel Ancient Lights was published posthumously in 1982, and St. Martins Press published 18 of his short stories in a book collection titled You Never Believe Me and Other Stories. Condition: Inscribed by Jones on half title. Touch of rubbing to spine ends. Jacket spine ends lightly chipped with some rubbed, some light wear to edges with some small closed tears, price clipped else a near fine copy in like jacket.
