Top corners bumped, else very good in near fine dustwrapper with a little age-toning, and a couple small nicks and tears. Author's fourth book, like the first three, set among the lowly of Egypt. Very nicely Inscribed by the author in French to American expatriate author James Jones and his wife Gloria.         Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House, 1957 First edition, first printing. Publisher's green cloth, with the author's initials stamped to the front board in gilt, spine stamped in black and gilt; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by George Salter, with an illustration of a train track and railway underpass to the front panel, lettered in white and pink, photograph of the author by Phyllis Cerf to the rear panel. Fine book; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, bright and unfaded spine, tiny nick to the front hinge, fresh panels. A superb copy. Atlas Shrugged is Ayn Rand's fourth and last novel, and it is also her longest book. Set in a fictional dystopian future, Atlas Shrugged paints a picture of what the United States would look like if its best skilled workers, in refusal of being taxed, simply stopped doing their jobs. The title comes from the mythological figure of the Titans named Atlas, who was charged by the gods to hold up the sky and is often depicted as carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. Of all Rand's novels, Atlas Shrugged is the most infused with her personal philosophical system called Objectivism, which she would later outline in her 1961 For the New Intellectual.. Illus. by Salter, George. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Sun and Shadow

Kenneth J Carpenter: Quenian Press, Berkeley 1957 - One of about ninety copies (the limitation unstated) of this delicate chapbook, the first separate edition of a story that had earlier appeared in THE GOLDEN APPLES OF THE SUN (1953). SUN AND SHADOW was the first consciously artistic treatment of Bradbury's work by a small press. Yet, intended in the spirit of ephemera (a gift "for members of the Roxburghe Club of San Francisco and other friends"), it steers clear of the stale sense of "manufactured rarity" that hangs around many of Bradbury's later limited editions, which often seem to be limited just for the sake of being so. The soft paper wraps are slightly rumpled; still near fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Three Page Typed Letter Signed to John R. Pierce, "the father of the communications satellite"

Three pages on Campbell's Mountainside, New Jersey stationery, dated 8 January 1957. Signed "John." Lightly folded as mailed, else fine. A fascinating and truly remarkable letter, of approximately 1400 words, with a significant and detailed discussion of rocketry, the possibilities of space travel, and United States scientific research. He discusses the Vanguard rocket, Sputnik, hydrogen bombs, Savannah River, math, Russian superiority in practical rocket constructions, and more. Near the conclusion, Campbell rails against the U.S. scientific establishment: "'Basic Science' John, has oversold itself. We don't need more scientists; we need fewer. Scientists don't need more respect; we'd be better off if scientists had less respect. What we do need is greater respect for the ingenious inventor --- the unpredictable, undependable, unscientific, but remarkably effective innovator." The recipient, John R. Pierce, was a physicist and prolific inventor who was Director of Research at Bell Laboratories. He was frequently referred to as "the father of the communications satellite," leading the team that developed the Telstar satellite, the first active communications satellite to relay phone and television traffic, and which delivered the first live television signals between the U.S. and Europe. He was also an accomplished musician, a pioneer in digital music, and recorded some of the first synthesized music. However, Pierce is probably best known as the man who coined the word "transistor." Under the name J.J. Coupling, he wrote both real science and science-fiction stories for Astounding Science Fiction, a magazine edited by Campbell. Campbell was a physicist, but is better known as one of the most influential editors and practitioners of science-fiction. Isaac Asimov called him "the most powerful force in science fiction ever." As a writer he is most famous for his classic science-fiction story "Who Goes There?" about a shape-shifting alien that invades an Antarctic station, and which was filmed three times as The Thing. A great letter. .

Original pen and ink drawing of Piglet

Petworth: , 1957. Octavo (177 × 123 mm) headed notepaper of Shepard's house Woodmancote in Lodsworth, near Petworth. Mounted on card, slight mount-burn to the margins, lightly browned, perhaps a little faded, but very good. Autograph letter and original drawing of Piglet, seated on the grass with a dandelion clock; "The Piglet was sitting on the ground at the door of his house blowing happily at a dandelion, and wondering whether it would be this year, next year, some time or never. He had just discovered that it would be never, and was trying to remember what "it" was …" (Winnie-the-Pooh). " To Mr. Gwynne Hughes, 'Since Piglet seems to be your favourite character, I send you his portrait'". Character sketches by Shepard are quite scarce as he famously regretted illustrating Milne's books as he felt that they overshadowed his subsequent career.

Early gift inscription dated in 1959, boards a bit soiled, a very good only copy in a price-clipped, good or better dustwrapper with small chips and tears.
