In the original stapled printed wrappers. Offprint from "Les Études Philosophiques", October-December, 1956. Has been bended vertically and has some minor miscolouring to extremities, otherwise a very fine and clean copy. Pp. 567-584.. Scarce off-print issue of Lacan famous work on psychoanalysis in which Lacan revived Freudian psychoanalysis. The present publication marks a major turning point in Lacanian and French psychoanalysis in general with the split between Lacan and The International Psycho-Analytical Association (IPA) and the later founding of Lacan's own 'SCHOOL' in 1964.Lacan's famous "return to Freud" emphasizes a renewed attention to the original texts of Freud, and included a radical critique of Ego psychology. Lacan has been called "the most controversial psycho-analyst since Freud" mainly because of his (selective) revival of Freud and his quarrel with the IPA - the present publication not only marks the revival of Freud, it also initiates the split with the IPA.The main reason for the split between between the IPA and Lacan was Lacan's use of sessions of variable duration which the IPA did not advocate:"After (Lacan's) resigning from the IPA-affiliated Société Psychanalytique de Paris (SPP) in 1953, to join the newly founded Société Francaise de Psychoanalyse (SFP), Lacan was informed by letter that this also meant that he was no longer a member of the IPA. From that moment on Lacan until his dead Lacan and the IPA were at loggerheads. Lacan criticized both the institutional structure and the dominant theoretical tendencies of the IPA. [...]. Lacan argued that Freud had organized the IPA in such a way because that was the only way to assuring that his theories, misunderstood by all his first followers, remain intact for someone else (Lacan) to disinter and resuscitate later on. The IPA was, in other words, like a tomb whose only function was to preserve Freud's doctrine despite the ignorance of the members of the association, the implication being that once Lacan had breathed new life into the doctrine [which he did with the present publication], the IPA no longer had any valid function at all. (Evans, An Introductory Dictionary of Lacanian Psychoanalysis)

Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd,, 1957. Octavo. Original brown cloth, title gilt to the spine. With the dust jacket. 40 plates, maps to the text. Endpapers a little foxed, some foxing to the fore edge, else very good in slightly tired, clipped jacket, browned on the lower panel, some crumpling and chipping head and tail of the spine. This copy with two one-page typed letters on Meinertzhagen's 17 Kensington Park Gardens - "KPG" - stationery to Evelyn John Mardon, late Indian Civil Service who served in the North-West Provinces and Oudh, and self-published a number of works on big game hunting, Shikar Memories, Stalks in Three Continents, and Safaris in East Africa. In the first, dated 16 February 1958 and initialled, Meinertzhagen thanks Mardon for his letter, "glad to hear my Kenya Diary interested you. I should appreciate seeing your book on Kenya"; and the second, dated 20 February and fully signed, remarks that Mardon's book had "brought back all sorts of memories", continuing "I am only ten years younger than you and still go to Kenya almost every year for I love the country and the people both white and coloured … I am glad to see that you had met Raymond Hook of Nanyuki. I went to the top of Mount Kenya with him in 1936 … I am too old to climb the mountain again. It fascinates me"; before concluding with typical hyperbole, "I think it is the most perfect mountain in the world and I know most of them including all the highest Himalayan ones".

A View From The Bridge (Signed By The Author)

The First UK printing published by Cresset Press in 1957.The BOOK is in near FINE condition.Mild offsetting to the end papers with a little spotting to the text block.Red cloth clean with sharp corners and bright gilt lettering.Free from inscriptions, erasures and markings. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition.A little edge wear to the spine ends with a little rubbing at the rear upper spine fold.Small closed tear to the front upper spine fold.Colouring to the spine remains bright.Rear cover remains remarkably clean for its age.The wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been SIGNED by Arthur Miller to the half title (as was his custom). A View from the Bridge is a play by Pulitzer Prize winning american playwright Arthur Miller, first staged on September 29, 1955 as a one-act verse drama with A Memory of Two Mondays at the Coronet Theatre on Broadway. The play was unsuccessful and Miller subsequently revised the play to contain two acts; this version is the one with which audiences are most familiar today. The two-act version premièred in the New Watergate theatre club in London's West End under the direction of Peter Brook on October 11, 1956. The play is set in 1950s America, in an Italian American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It employs a chorus and narrator in the character of Alfieri. Eddie, the tragic protagonist, has an improper love of, and almost obsession with, Catherine.Miller's interest in writing about the world of the New York docks originated with an unproduced screenplay that he developed with Elia Kazan in the early 1950s (entitled The Hook) that addressed corruption on the Brooklyn docks.Kazan later directed 'On the Waterfront', which dealt with the same subject.Miller said that he heard the basic account that developed into the plot of 'A View from the Bridge' from a lawyer who worked with longshoremen, who related it to him as a true story. The 2015 London revival of this play landed two Laurence Olivier Awards and a transfer to Broadway.Very scarce to find as a signed title.Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.

Fin de partie. Suivi de Acte sans paroles.

Les Éditions des Minuits,, Paris, 1957 - Paris, Les Éditions des Minuits, 1957. 122 Seiten, 3 Bll. Original-Broschur. Jahrhundert.

        Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House, 1957. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good. A Near Fine copy of the book with a contemporary gift inscription on the front end paper and the spine label a trifle rubbed, otherwise in excellent condition. In a Very Good dust jacket with a small chip and a one inch tear at the base of the spine, repair on the verso with tape. A few other little tears, without loss and a crease on the rear flap, otherwise a fairly bright, unfaded example. The jacket retains the critical $6.95 and 10/57 date code, essential for the first issue jacket. Rand's magnum opus, where she develops her objectivist theory and explores the question, "what if society's genius goes on strike?" Rand considered the book "not about the murder of man's body, but about the murder and rebirth of man's spirit." "Atlas Shrugged" has remained one of the most popular and influential books written in the twentieth century; one survey in 1991 finding it second only to the Bible in having the greatest impact upon its readers. The book would also place first on Modern Library Reader's Poll of the Top 100 novels of the 20th century. "...the reader will stay with this strange world, borne along by its story and eloquent flow of ideas." (Contemporary Newsweek Review). Near Fine in Very Good. dust jacket.

Hitchcock (First French Edition, Signed by Alfred Hitchcock)

Paris: Editions Universitaires, 1957. First French Edition. True first edition, preceding the American by nearly 20 years. INSCRIBED by Alfred Hitchcock on the half-title page ("To Peter, Alfred Hitchcock") followed by a large drawing of his well-known self-caricature. Eric Rohmer and Claude Chabrol wrote this book near the beginning of their respective careers, and would both go on to become highly individual and respected filmmakers in their own right. A classic study of Hitchcock's early-to-mid career films, one of the most important books on cinema printed in the twentieth century. A wonderful section of high-resolution stills from the Hitchcock films discussed ends the book, the last being the famous photo of Hitchcock crossing at the top of a steep stone stairway, from "I Confess." Very Good plus in photo illustrated wrappers, with a small tear at one corner of the crown. The only copy signed by Hitchcock we have ever encountered.
