        Through the Gates of Splendor.

Harper & Brothers, New York 1957 - First edition of the author's classic first book. Signed by Elisabeth Elliot on the title page. Octavo, original half cloth. Near fine in very good dust jacket with some wear and tear. Uncommon signed. The title of the book is derived from the fourth stanza of the hymn "We Rest on Thee". This hymn was famously sung by the missionaries before the men left for Huaorani territory in January 1956. The lines read: "We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender. Thine is the battle, Thine shall be the praise; When passing through the gates of pearly splendor, Victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.         The Picture Story of a Memorable Visit

[N.p., Washington DC?]: , 1957. Folio (510 × 358 mm). Spiral bound within original green cloth-backed printed buff boards. Profusely illustrated from black and white photographs, text and captions in Arabic and English, title page and section titles - printed on coloured washi paper - in Arabic alone The boards somewhat rubbed and soiled, corners bumped, some chipping at edges, contents clean and sound. First and only edition of this commemorative pictorial souvenir of King Sa'ud ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz Al Sa'ud's official visit to America. Extremely uncommon, just ten locations on OCLC, all in the United States. "The following pages present a photographic portrayal of the visit to the United States of America by His Majesty, King Sa'ud ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz Al Sa'ud at the invitation of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The visit was prompted by the earnest desire of the two leaders, as men of peace and honor, to agree upon programs and policies which would foster harmony among nations, and serve the well-being of peoples … His Majesty and his party were in the United States only eleven days. But, these were busy, fruitful days, from the morning of January 29, 1957, when a squadron of United States Air Force jet aircraft flew out to sea to meet the liner Constitution, until the morning of February 9, when the President's personal airplane soared away from Washington National Airport … The camera has recorded the highlights of the memorable visit: the full military honors accorded to King Sa'ud upon his arrival in New York, the unprecedented personal welcome by the President in Washington, the meetings at the White House, the conferences with Secretary Dulles and other officials, the discussions with diplomats and statesmen of the Arab countries, the expressions of hospitality - these and other events …" The other officials and dignitaries referred to included Richard Nixon as Vice President, Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, Charles E. Wilson, Secretary of Defense, Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary General of the United Nations, Krishna Menon, India's permanent representative at the UN, Abdul Khalek Hassuma, Secretary General of the Arab League, Crown Prince Abd-al-llah of Iraq, and the UN General Assembly, and Dr. Ahmad Husain, the Egyptian ambassador. Sa'ud's trip included visits to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Arlington Military Cemetery, the Washington Islamic Center, and a banquet hosted by Fred A. Davies, chairman of Aramco. The visit was a key element in America's political manoeuvring following the Suez Crisis, designed in large part to prevent Soviet Russia from replacing French and British influence in the region. Sa'ud was persuaded to accept the Eisenhower Doctrine, and $250,000,000 towards his defence budget, and in so doing found himself at odds with the rise of Arab nationalism, and a target for Nasserist calls from Egypt for the removal of the Arab monarchies. Following worsening conflict with his brother Faisal over his indebtedness, and his court's refusal to keep pace with the modernisation of other Arab nations, Sa'ud was forced to abdicate in 1964, going into exile in Geneva. Publication is usually attributed to the US government, but the awkwardness of the English, and the care in the presentation of the Arabic captioning and titles, suggest that it may have been produced in Saudi Arabia with American backing, positive spin at home for a less than triumphant diplomatic foray.

The Principles and Art of Plastic Surgery

LITTLE, BROWN & CO, BOSTON/TORONTO 1957 - books in great condition. very good binding. 2 large volumes, bright covers, clean and unmarked, numerous black & white pics, few color pics. Reinforced Slipcase significant wear has clear packing tape on all edges, , creased, worn extremities. Additional shipping will be required. It is historically a very important text He was brilliant for his era and the working conditions he had .and there is NO question he was a pioneer and thoroughly inspired generations of surgeons to follow him. His name would be known by every plastic surgeon on the planet .and his principles SHOULD be know and practised by every plastic surgeon on the planet. He was however a pioneer and achieved a lot. He represents one of the milestones in plastic surgery history. His principles still are relevant today and are still spoken of. They are naturally applied in a different manner given the different knowledge and technology we have. None of his techniques would be directly relevant today !!!! principles and his spirit. Plastic surgeons themselves have a tendency to reflect on the history of their own specialty. DATE PUBLISHED: 1957 EDITION: FIRST ED 652+317 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First French Edition. First Printing. Near Fine in illustrated wrappers, a lovely copy of the French crime fiction duo's sixth book. Basis for the 1960 suspense film "Double Deception," directed by Serge Friedman and starring Jacques Riberolles, and twins Alice and Ellen Kessler. Scarce in any condition, let alone inscribed, with a nice association between the two French authors.

        ATLAS SHRUGGED (Inscribed First Edition)

New York: Random House, 1957. First edition. Very Good +/Very Good +. Inscribed by the author: "To John Muir - Cordially - Ayn Rand 4/14/71." Muir was a well known collector in Austin Texas, who passed away in June of 2014. A Very Good+ copy of the book in like dust jacket. The book has a few light spots on the cloth, the spine label is a trifle rubbed, and the hinges are a bit loose, but internally in excellent condition. In a dust jacket with a small chip at the crown and one short tear, otherwise a decent example. The jacket retains the critical $6.95 and 10/57 date code, essential for the first issue jacket. Rand's magnum opus, where she develops her objectivist theory and explores the question, "what if society's genius goes on strike?" Rand considered the book "not about the murder of man's body, but about the murder and rebirth of man's spirit." "Atlas Shrugged" has remained one of the most popular and influential books written in the twentieth century; one survey in 1991 finding it second only to the Bible in having the greatest impact upon its readers. The book would also place first on Modern Library Reader's Poll of the Top 100 novels of the 20th century. "...the reader will stay with this strange world, borne along by its story and eloquent flow of ideas." (Contemporary Newsweek Review). Very Good + in Very Good +. dust jacket.

Lettre autographe signee adressee a l'ecrivain et journaliste Madeleine Chapsal.

[Paris], 20. 24 mars 1958. 1 p. in-8 a l'en-tete Librairie NRF Gallimard. Camus reaffirme: "[...] non, je n'ai pas change d'avis et mon desir de retraite est au contraire de plus en plus fort [...]".

        Doctor Zhivago (Zjivago) (Russian).

Milano, Feltrinelli, (1957). In the original light green cardboard-binding in the original illustrated dust-jacket. Minor bumping to capitals (of binding and dust-jacket). Ligh pencil annotation to pasted down front free end-paper and front free end-paper. Back free end-paper with small repair to outer margin. A very fine and clean copy.. The very rare first edition, printed in Russian in Italy, of this modern classic, which tells the tragic story of the medical doctor and poet, Yuri Zhivago, in the years during the Russian Revolution.Though begun several decades earlier, the work was completed in 1956, and was submitted for publication to the journal "Novij Mir" the same year. Soviet censors, however, claimed Pasternak's subtle criticisms of Stalinism, collectivization, and the Gulag were anti-Soviet and rejected its publication. Pasternak sent several copies of the manuscript in Russian to friends in the West and in 1957 Italian publisher Giangiacomo Feltrinelli arranged for the novel to be smuggled out of the Soviet Union and published it the same year.Already the following year numerous European translations of the work was made, and the English and Italian translations appeared as the first. Despite desperate efforts by the Union of Soviet Writers to prevent its publication, Feltrinelli published an Italian translation of the book in November 1957. The Communist Party of Italy expelled Feltrinelli from their membership in retaliation for his role in the publication of the novel. These immediate translations and the publications of them partly caused Pasternak being awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1958 which he due to intense pressure from the Soviet authorities, was forced to reject. Due to the immense popularity of the work, all the European translations were reprinted numerous times. In 1965 the work was made into the large-scale film-production by David Lean, which was nominated for ten Oscars and won five.See: Mancosu, Inside the Zhivago Storm, 2013

        L'Affaire Lolita: Défense de l'Ecrevain

Paris: The Olympia Press 1957 - Limited edition of 5,000 numbered copies. Publisher's yellow paper wrappers, blue title panels to the front wrapper and spine, lettered in black and yellow. About near fine, with some light rubbing to the extremities, a hint of toning to the spine, minor soiling to the wrappers, else fine. A clean and pleasing example of a scarce title. L'Affaire Lolita is a pamphlet regarding the publication and censorship of Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 novel Lolita, which tells the story of Humbert Humbert, a professor of literature with a penchant for pre-teen "nymphets." Despite the fact that it was originally published in Paris by the Olympia Press, Lolita was banned in France in 1955; at the behest of the British government, who had also banned the novel, the French authorities seized twenty-five of the Olympia Press' works, including Lolita. Shortly thereafter, Maurice Girodias, founder of the press, dubbed the controversy "l'affaire Lolita" in reference to the 1890s Dreyfus Affair and what the French press had dubbed "l'affaire Miller" when Tropic of Cancer was banned several years prior. Girodias published this pamphlet in order to garner support for his protest of the ban - a lawsuit which he ultimately won. Specifically, this volume includes Girodias' article "L'affaire Lolita," an essay by Nabokov, selections from Lolita, and selected other essays, all of which are printed in French.
