        A Death in the Family

McDowell Oblensky, NY, 1957. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. "Published in 1957, two years after its author's death at the age of forty-five, 'A Death in the Family' remains a near-perfect work of art, an autobiographical novel that contains one of the most evocative depictions of loss and grief ever written. As Jay Follet hurries back to his home in Knoxville, Tennessee, he is killed in a car accident - a tragedy that destroys not only a life, but also the domestic happiness and contentment of a young family. A novel of great courage, lyric force, and powerful emotion, 'A Death in the Family' is a masterpiece of American literature. [Pub. Info] An American classic.         Escape from Five Shadows / He would live as a free man or not at all (SIGNED)

Dell Books, New York 1957 - Dell 940, "A Dell Western / First Dell Printing -- March, 1957." First printing of the first paperback edition after the 1956 Houghton-Mifflin hardcover. This copy signed -- full name only-- by Elmore Leonard to title page. Lovely turquoise topstain. Signed early copies are quite scarce, and note that even several high-priced and supposedly "signed" hardcovers are really signed only in the sense that they have a "signed bookplate laid in," meaning there's no evidence the author ever saw or handled them. Condition of this copy as new unread, with no creases, no spine roll. 192 pp. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Triad and Tabut. A survey of the origin and diffusion of Chinese and Mohamedan Secret Societies in the Malay Peninsula A. D. 1800-1935.

Singapore: Printed at the Government Printing Office, 1941 (1957) - 2 parts bound as one, folio (340 x 215 mm). Contemporary green quarter calf, gilt lettered spine, green cloth sides. Light wear to spine. A very good copy. First and only edition of this fascinating and detailed history of Malay secret societies, published as "confidential for authorised issue only". Although well represented institutionally (Copac locates 16 complete copies in British and Irish institutional libraries, OCLC around two dozen worldwide), it is uncommon commercially. The Foreword to Part I (dated 1957) is by the former colonial secretary for Singapore, W. L. Blythe, who writes "the author had hoped to continue his work by a more detailed analysis of the activities of particular societies in Malaya, but owing to the Japanese occupation of Malaya during which he died, this was never completed. Wynne wrote at a time when Chinese Secret Society activity was just about at its lowest ebb in Malaya. For years there had been few prosecutions of persons for comparative study and of members and officials of such societies who could be interrogated". He then adds that "as the material contained in this book may be of interest and use to a wider group of research workers, permission has been given by the Governments of the Federation of Malaya and the Colony of Singapore for the issue of such copies as still remain, to libraries and centres of learning"; to which a pencilled marginal note adds: "partly true". There are a number of pencilled marginal notes clearly by someone familiar with the subject. A publisher's note at the end of the Foreword states that "throughout this work, references will be found to various Appendices, but these did not survive the Japanese occupation of Malaya. There are also references to 'Part II' and to chapters numbered from XXII onwards. These concern the projected second part of this work which was planned and partly written but was unfinished at the time of the Japanese occupation". Part II, present here, is often absent. Mervyn Llewelyn Wynne (c.1891-1942) was a Dublin-born officer with the Malayan Police, who had been deputy inspector general Straits Settlements Police Force, after serving with the Rifle Brigade (Prince Consort's Own) 1914-1922; he died in internment at Sumatra. Triad and Tabut was issued at the height of what the British refer to as the Malayan Emergency (1948-1960) when Commonwealth armed forces fought a protracted guerilla war against the Malayan National Liberation Army; it is quoted extensively in Anoma Pieris, Hidden Hands and Divided Landscapes: a penal history of Singapore's plural society, 2009.         The King Ranch

King Ranch, Kingsville, TX 1957 - FIRST EDITION, SPECIAL LIMITED "SADDLE BLANKET ISSUE" produced exclusively for the King Ranch; one of 3000 copies printed, none intended for sale. One of the most important books on the history of Texas. Illustrated throughout. "The two volumes of this work [The King Ranch] will be a lasting pleasure to own. That is, indeed a most inadequate understatement? The heart of the matter is, of course, the writing itself--the thing told and the way of telling. In this work the illustrations are a part of the telling, for they are the product of the same hand that has done most of the writing, Tom Lea's? In the case of The King Ranch the worth of the story and its double telling has been matched by the taste and skill of famed Southwestern book designer J. Carl Hertzog, and El Paso Rosanin, and by the finest efforts of printer and binder. The product as a whole is one rarely matched in the whole history of American publishing--indeed a work one can be proud, in every sense, to own" (John T. Frederick, The Rotarian). Kingsville, TX: Printed for the King Ranch, 1957. Octavo, original tan and brown heavy crash linen in the design of the saddle blankets woven and used on the King Ranch. Two volumes in original slipcase.Handsome presentation inscription (1957) on flyleaf. Vol I hinge with paper split (but holding), wear to edges on leather label on box (as usual due to the softness of the leather). An exquisite production. [Attributes: First Edition]

Mappenklappe, Präge-St. a. ersten Bl., geringfügig stockfleckig a. unteren Kanten, geringe Gbrsp. First edition limited to 1000 copies.Carl Wheat's Mapping of the Trans-Mississippi West is a comprehensive and readable cartographic history of the American West. The first three volumes of the work are by necessity bulky and out sized to accommodate the many maps contained with their covers. These beautifully printed books present a truly graphic picture of the exploration and peopling of the vast unknown land west of the Mississippi. The author does not merely present a catalog of significant maps of each era but tells the exciting story of many facets of history that resulted in their making-of the hard journeys, the hazardous exploits, the motivation, the mysticism, the misunderstandings and the strange blend of fact, imagination, false geographic concept and political necessity which were consummated in the engraver's work. These volumes will provide exciting text for the casual reader and have become eminent source book for the student and scholar.Condition:A near fine set.

Typed Note from Ezra Pound to a signature collector [Who the blue hell..?] TOGETHER WITH an original Typed Letter from Pound's Doctor during his incarceration in Saint Elizabeth's Hospital

Ezra Pound and others, 1957, 1958. First edition. Framed. Fine. An ORIGINAL TYPED NOTE from a cantankerous Ezra Pound in response to a request to sign books stating: "Who the blue hell do you expect to wrap parcels and carry 'em to the post office. ["?" added in pencil, presumably in Pound's hand] Are you literate AT LEAST to pt/ of having digested this series ?", including the original typed envelope addressed to "J.P. Murphey[sic]." Washington: 1957. The request for the signed books was made by inveterate autograph seeker James P. Murphy, who appears to have persisted in his quest for Pound's autograph. Also present is an ORIGINAL TYPED LETTER SIGNED to Murphy from Pound's "keeper," Dr. Winfred Overholser, Superintendent of Saint Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, D.C. [the mental hospital to which Pound was committed for twelve years after World War II] dated June 11, 1958 stating in part: "In reply to your note, I may say that Mr. Ezra Pound was discharged from this hospital last month. We do not have his present address." Dr. Overholser then suggests that Murphy contact New Directions, Pound's Publisher -- with the original envelope. With three photographs clipped from Humphrey Carpenter's biography of Pound, A Serious Character (1988). The whole mounted and framed, measuring approximately 17.5" x 16.25". A nice assemblage of Pound and Pound-related items, including an ORIGINAL TYPED NOTE FROM EZRA POUND.
