4 eigenh.

Gegenbriefe.

The Picture Story of a Memorable Visit.

[N.p., Washington DC?]: , 1957. Folio (510 × 358 mm). Spiral bound within original green cloth-backed printed buff boards. Profusely illustrated from black and white photographs, text and captions in Arabic and English, title page and section titles - printed on coloured washi paper - in Arabic alone A little rubbed on the boards, but overall very good. First and only edition of this commemorative pictorial souvenir of King Sa'ud ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz Al Sa'ud's official visit to America. Extremely uncommon, just ten locations on OCLC, all in the United States. "The following pages present a photographic portrayal of the visit to the United States of America by His Majesty, King Sa'ud ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz Al Sa'ud at the invitation of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The visit was prompted by the earnest desire of the two leaders, as men of peace and honor, to agree upon programs and policies which would foster harmony among nations, and serve the well-being of peoples ? His Majesty and his party were in the United States only eleven days. But, these were busy, fruitful days, from the morning of January 29, 1957, when a squadron of United States Air Force jet aircraft flew out to sea to meet the liner Constitution, until the morning of February 9, when the President's personal airplane soared away from Washington National Airport ? The camera has recorded the highlights of the memorable visit: the full military honors accorded to King Sa'ud upon his arrival in New York, the unprecedented personal welcome by the President in Washington, the meetings at the White House, the conferences with Secretary Dulles and other officials, the discussions with diplomats and statesmen of the Arab countries, the expressions of hospitality - these and other events ?" The other officials and dignitaries referred to included Richard Nixon as Vice President, Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, Charles E. Wilson, Secretary of Defense, Dag Hammarskjold, Secretary General of the United Nations, Krishna Menon, India's permanent representative at the UN, Abdul Khalek Hassuma, Secretary General of the Arab League, Crown Prince Abd-al-llah of Iraq, and the UN General Assembly, and Dr. Ahmad Husain, the Egyptian ambassador. Sa'ud's trip included visits to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Arlington Military Cemetery, the Washington Islamic Center, and a banquet hosted by Fred A. Davies, chairman of Aramco. The visit was a key element in America's political manoeuvring following the Suez Crisis, designed in large part to prevent Soviet Russia from replacing French and British influence in the region. Sa'ud was persuaded to accept the Eisenhower Doctrine, and $250,000,000 towards his defence budget, and in so doing found himself at odds with the rise of Arab nationalism, and a target for Nasserist calls from Egypt for the removal of the Arab monarchies. Following worsening conflict with his brother Faisal over his indebtedness, and his court's refusal to keep pace with the modernisation of other Arab nations, Sa'ud was forced to abdicate in 1964, going into exile in Geneva. Publication is usually attributed to the US government, but the awkwardness of the English, and the care in the presentation of the Arabic captioning and titles, suggest that it may have been produced in Saudi Arabia with American backing, positive spin at home for a less than triumphant diplomatic foray.

        Atlas Shrugged.

New York: Random House,, 1957. Octavo. Original green cloth, title to spine gilt on black, monogram to front board gilt, top edge blue, buff endpapers. With the pictorial dust jacket. A little sunning to spine ends, some faint spotting to endpapers. An excellent copy in the bright jacket, with some light rubbing to extremities, and spine ends nicked and chipped. First edition, first printing of Rand's fourth novel. The philosophical movement launched by Rand with Atlas Shrugged had a profound impact on American culture, which continues to this day, with the novel named by a 1991 Library of Congress survey as the most influential book for a majority of Americans, second only to the Bible.

[Photo Album]: Czech Communists Visit England 1957

England. 1957. Oblong quarto. Measuring 9" x 12.5". Red plastic commercial photo album with a belt-style binding. Contains 99 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 3.5" and 3.5" x 4.5", with captions in Czech. Album is very good with some tears, with near fine photographs.A photo album documenting a 1957 visit by a group of Czechoslovakian Communists to England, possibly from Cedok, the state travel agency . There are 23 pages of partially annotated photographs and a title page that reads, "9-23 Srpna 1957" (August), with an image of the Sabena Airlines plane that brought them. The album takes place only a year after the Soviet invasion of Hungary. There can be little doubt that the 11 tourists were all party Apparatchiks, as attested by the photographic record of their pilgrimage to Karl Marx's grave in North London and the nearest thing they could find to British socialism, a well-stocked Cooperative shop. A corner of the first page has been removed, possibly to obscure the identity of those involved with the trip. The album shows the visitors at their "London villa, Hollybank," and includes photos of their visit to the Palace of Westminster, the Royal Festival Hall, and Buckingham Palace. There are also snapshots of Big Ben, Royal Guards, and Trafalgar Square, as well as other tourist places of interest. They also enjoyed the gaudier pleasures of Soho with a stop outside a Peep Show followed by the more appropriate trip to Highgate Cemetery to see the aforementioned grave of Karl Marx. There is also a seaside visit to a very chilly looking Margate, complete with 1950s bathing suits. An interesting political photographic record of Eastern European Communists touring a capitalist country. .

And then she goes on to note that ""I have been so depressed, it seems to me that hearcu has forgotten me"" It was believed she suffered from being bi-polar and her swinging emotional state is displayed in this autograph letter to Sidney.Autograph letter signed, rendered in graphite, on 7.25"" x 10.75"" Air Mail tissue paper, 2 single sided pages. Includes the original envelope dated Feb 9, 1957. Letters in near fine condition with faint small stain, envelope mostly intact with small chip to the front and the opening tear to the versoGreto Garbo autograph letter, signed using her pseudo name of ""Harry"" (short for Harriet Brown), written to Sydney Guilaroff, who was regarded as the greatest hair stylist in the history of Hollywood, and confidant to numerous stars. Sydney knew everyone and all their secrets, and many stars considered him totally trustworthy. In his memoirs, “Crowning Glories,” Guilaroff divulged that he had had romantic affairs with both Greta Garbo and Ava Gardner. In Garbo's letter she also references her depression which chronically plagued her as she was known for having life long melancholy, or depression. In her later years, she was quite aware of her condition. As she approached her sixtieth birthday, she had apparently told a frequent walking companion ""In a few days, it will be the anniversary of the sorrow that never leaves me, that will never leave me for the rest of my life."" To another friend, she said, in 1971, ""I suppose I suffer from very deep depression."" It was believed she suffered from being bi-polar and her swinging emotional state is displayed in this autograph letter to Sidney.Greta Garbo letters were mostly unsigned, even when they were it was usually with a pseudonym, and the subterfuge even extended to a reluctance to date anything, so envelope postmarks are the only reliable clue as to when they were written. When a signature was included, she preferred to use one of many nicknames and pseudonyms. Harriet Brown was a favorite, so she would just sign H.B. or Harry Brown, but at other times her mood would dictate different persona's: ""Mountain Boy"" (M-Boy) for her secret, contradictory, but gentle masculine side; or ""Eleanor"" for her wistful, feminine side. They were mostly in pencil, and often on very inexpensive note-paper.A wonderful example of Garbo's personal side, written to her friend and lover Sydney Guilaroff."

Nice fresh copy though on the inside. “The Many-Worlds Interpretation (MWI) is an approach to quantum mechanics according to which, in addition to the world we are aware of directly, there are many other similar worlds which exist in parallel at the same space and time. The existence of the other worlds makes it possible to remove randomness and action at a distance [e.g., the EPR paradox] from quantum theory and thus from all physics.”--Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. +++In the 1957 (volume 29) volume: “Synthesis of the Elements in Stars””**, E.

An interesting political photographic record of Eastern European Communists touring a capitalist country. .

[Attributes: Soft Cover]
